As Fairfax County residents we need to stand up to contractors who are trying to swindle us out of our hard earned money. Headaches, scams, lies, just some of things Ive experienced dealing with this company. I thought we had an understanding when we shook hands and I signed the contract. I hired this company to replace my driveway, but when they were finished I found they only replaced approx. 80% of the driveway as they don't consider the collar part of the driveway. If you google driveway collar its definition is "part of the driveway". They told me in Virginia it is not part of the driveway, which is absurd because throughout Virginia and the rest of the USA its called the driveway collar, how can it be called the driveway collar but not be part of the driveway? Anyways, I tried to reason with them and paid them for 90% of the unfinished project, even though they only completed 80% of the project. But they are still sending me bills for the last 10%. So now I have to come on these review sites to try and warn others about how they will tell you one thing, but hide behind jargon and fine print on contracts to try and get out of what was agreed upon during the estimate meetings. I even gave them pictures of what my HOA approved, showing the entire driveway was to be replaced, not just to the driveway collar, and they claim the pictures weren't on the contract so they're not liable. They also tore up approx. 1000 sq ft of my lawn surrounding where they worked, which I had to pay to repair. So once again, if you don't want to have to deal with consumer affairs, better business bureau and small claims court to try and get this company to stop trying to squeeze money out of you for work they didn't do, then I would avoid Big Dog Concrete. I will update here the outcome from Fairfax County small claims court when this nightmare is over. read more

I had no idea that it would be so difficult to find a reputable company in the area for a driveway expansion. (After hearing horror stories from our friends, I knew I needed to do my research.) Luckily, Yelp came to the rescue! I was so happy to find all the positive Big Dog reviews and even happier that they complete residential projects, too! I reached out to Big Dog through a message and Shelby responded quickly for more information. I made an appointment for Ramos to check out the driveway and provide us with an estimate. We also wanted to create an area for our detachable trailer, but we weren't sure what surface would be the best. Ramos explained that the county requires pavement or we would be fined. That worked out fine for us, since we the rest would be asphalt anyway. As he looked over the driveway, he made sure to account for water drainage so we wouldn't be dealing with pooling water or damage to the new asphalt. He also noted that the new paving would be a slightly different color than the old driveway, which we were fine with. Ramos mapped out the area and provided a very reasonable estimate for the work we wanted. We made an appointment with Shelby for a few months later, since we called in February and they don't start paving until the spring, as the winter weather can damage a new driveway. The communication was great the whole time and everyone was professional. When the day arrived, Ramos was running a little bit late, but he called to let me know. (I definitely appreciate that, since so many workers don't call!) Once he arrived, he got to work with his team. I looked out the window periodically and saw that they took the time to compact the gravel layers and make sure everything was angled properly. They put in a full day of work and the extension was exactly what we wanted. We waited for the new asphalt to "cure" for about a week and it's been perfect for the past few months. Even with all the recent storms, we haven't had any issues with cracking or water pooling. They even mailed us a document that covered their work for a year. We had a great experience with Big Dog. We did most of our communications electronically because of COVID, and Shelby is extremely responsive. Ramos and his crew worked hard and did a great job with our stamped patio. When we had a question about a section, Ramos came back out and was able to make it right. (This was a minor issue, nothing to worry about!) Been a few weeks since we sealed the patio, and it looks great. Can't wait for the heat to subside so we can enjoy it more! Big Dog just completed my concrete walkway and stairs and I could not be happier. It came out exactly as designed, and looks wonderful. The installation crew was great. It took several days but it was within the contracted time period. They even helped me move some dirt so I could plant sod where they pulled up the old sidewalk. The finish team was also great. They power washed the wall where there was some minor concrete splatter and repainted where the power wash took off paint. They even resealed a small section a different contractor screwed up. I believe I received good value for my money and the teams were both very professional. I would highly recommend Big Dog Concrete Construction and would hire them again in a minute. read more

Big Dog replaced our entire driveway nearly a year ago. They did a great job! About 9 months after, I noticed some small imperfections that needed to be addressed. I called and they responded immediately. They sent a team to the house that power washed the entire driveway and then did minor repairs on the imperfections. If I didn't show you the areas they repaired, you would never notice them. Great job on the initial driveway replacement and fantastic follow-up!! You should use Big Dog!!! read more

Recently I wanted to change my front walkway to address a significant safety issue. As a Project Manager for a top 10 construction management company and having more than 25 years of experience I approached this project like I would one of my projects. During my contractor research I came across Big Dog Construction. They have an A+ Better Business Bureau rating as well as excellent Yelp ratings. Their representative, Ramos, that came out to survey the job really knew what he was doing. He told me things I didn't want to hear, like removing a tree because the roots could impact the concrete, but I also knew he was right. Big Dog got the contract for my stamped concrete project. They were totally professional. When they committed to something it happened excepting weather delays. Scheduling was up front and their personnel showed up on time and really worked hard. They were flexible to work with. My wife increased the size on a portion of the project and we quickly agreed to a change order and the work was done as if it was part of the original contract. They also showed me how to make an improvement to the aesthetics of the project by including my existing porch in the color coating and it looks fabulous. When there was a slight glitch it was handled professionally and was completed to my expectation simply and smoothly. Currently I'm also the chairperson of my HOA's engineering and construction committee. We now include Big Dog in the bidding for potential work within their trade. They have done asphalt work for us that helped us correct a long standing issue within the community. My wife and I are very satisfied and would recommend them for any project within their trade. read more

Had a great experience with Big Dog! We had a concrete parking pad put in on the side of the house. Scheduling was easy with Shelby. They showed up on time to give the quote, which came in on the lower end for price, and also said they could do it in one day (other people said it'd take two or even three days). Everything went smoothly, it's graded well, and they were able to save the nearby tree and interface the new pad with the asphalt driveway. And yep, they did everything in one day! I am so glad we used this company for our concrete work. The reviews I read on here did not lie. This is a wonderful professional crew of workers. From the first contact and estimate of work to the final cleanup of the lawn edges there were no problems. We were kept informed of all details concerning the work. Yes there were weather delays and cement delivery problems but these were out of their control. In 2 weeks we had a new retaining wall; new steps; new front walk; a double wide HUGE driveway; and a smaller patio area.
