One day after the implantation my appointment with Dr Klisovic said , I was doing so well I did not need to come back. My pressures were. 10 and I was seeing perfectly out of both eyes. Next, I had to meet with Dr. Derick,a few days later.. At the appointment my vision was even better when tested by his nurse. My nightmare: Dr. Derick wanted to trim the suture that controlled the flow of vitreous, but not to sever the suture. My wife warned him if he cut the suture I could go blind. This foolish man cut the suture and said I would be fine. 12 hours later my eye pressure was "0", and I was blind. I remain blind two years later almost to the day. I accompanied my elderly aunt to her appointment with Dr. Derick on 7-29. She had been extremely apprehensive about returning for her second follow up appointment due to her initial follow up visit not going well. She had expected to be seen by Dr. Derick after her surgery the prior day but was passed off to two very young people who stated they were doctors and had my aunt angry, confused and afraid to return. The fear of losing her vision had her terrified but Dr Derick contacted my aunt that same evening and asked her to come in for a second visit and would be seen by him. Upon our arrival we were were escorted to the back by the most amazing young lady named "Bree" . She explained every process clearly to my aunt so she could understand what was happening during her visit. She was so kind and sweet to my aunt and had her relaxed for Dr Deric's arrival to the treatment room. Dr. Derick, treated her with kindness and compassion and was able to explain to us, all the issues that my aunt had concerns about, giving her some comfort and relief. My husband was scheduled for an appointment on January 6, 2025. They canceled the appointment because of snow. They said they would call him to reschedule the appointment. After 2 weeks they had not called so he called them. Now he had to wait until February 10. He went to the appointment where he had to wait quite a while. Casey took him back and was excellent. My husband was not pleased at all with the doctor--not a good bedside manner. The doctor said that he needed to see a retina specialist to rule out macular degeneration before they could go ahead with the needed cataract surgery. That was 3 weeks ago today and we have not heard a word about an appointment with the retina specialist. It seems that this office is not run well. We have given up and will try another opthamology practice. We are very disappointed because now it has been close to 3 months that the optometrist said he should see an opthomologist as soon as possible. The nasty women at the front desk, the young optometrist that makes you feel like you are a burden and wasting his time to the doctors who rush you through like cattle, avoid this place at all costs. I refuse to go to this facility again!! New to the area and was able to get in to see Dr. SWARUPA KANCHERLA. I went there because i have been having issues with my eyes. Well she examined me and told me my Ducks were clogged. lol So after her examination she didn't even care what I had to say. Now i have clogged ducks, so I had to pay out of pocket for $500 which I did. But before the examination she came from seeing another client, and she used antibacterial but did not put on her gloves. Next day I had to go to Urgent care my eyes were swollen, I had an infection. I proceeded to get the duck's done and now I see double. I never went back and office staff all they care for was that money. Please i'm telling you my eyes are worst now ever. I refuse to go back to her and now trying to find another specialist.. I did tell her what happen and she ignored me. IF YOU have money to give away, then go for it! Horrible! I never written a bad review but this is the worst Ophthalmology ever. I haven't written a review on here for a while but my experience was so bad I feel compelled to warn people. I had an eye issue where my eye bled and I was in a lot of pain so I made an appointment with OAC. Dr. McHale came in asked me what was wrong, then told me what he felt was going on. I asked a few questions and he became upset and actually asked if I was doubting his professional opinion and then started spouting off his credentials in an angry, defensive manner. He was with me for no more than two minutes, shined a light for 5 seconds and didn't even examine my eye! And and then became insulted that I dare ask questions about my bleeding, swollen eye. I told him I was scared and wanted to know more. Then he walked out. He's an utter jerk. I'll avoid this place for any and all of my vision needs and the needs of my family. I'll also be certain to share my experience with others so they can avoid this nonsense. read more

Goodness..never have I written a review BEFORE ever stepping foot inside the office to see the physician. You need a referral for this team of doctors. The answering service or their office staff, not sure which one was so abrupt and rude on the phone, I almost decided not to pursue them. But I did decide to go ahead with them. They evidently received it and called me and left a VM (with no name) that they did receive it from my PCP and to call them. I am hearing impaired and the phone is difficult so I asked my husband to call and make an appointment for me. They wouldn't do that, I had to make the call, but they did tell him they never received a referral from my PCP. My dear husband called my PCP and asked that they send ANOTHER referral, which they did right away. I called again today and once again they could not find my referral, I asked her to check the spelling because many often misspell our last name. Once again a very rude, condescending, patronizing exchange from her. She kept interrupting me and wouldn't listen. I finally told her I was not happy with the way I have been treated JUST TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT and that I would be complaining. She could have cared less. Dr. McHale and the staff at Columbus Ophthalmology Associates are top notch! They have always been nothing but professional, helpful and friendly every time I've visited the office. I am a frequent visitor due to chronic eye problems. Dr. McHale has always described my diagnosis to me in terms that I understand and makes sure I have no questions or concerns prior to leaving the room. I have read the other reviews on here regarding Dr. McHale and I can honestly say I have never experienced anything like what the other reviewers are describing. I've been seeing Dr. McHale for about 15 years now and have no problems or concerns with his attitude or professionalism. He has always treated me with respect and addressed every concern I have about my eyes with the utmost sincerity. In fact, I trust him so much with my eyes that I have recommended him to my entire family. I have personally had three flawless eye surgeries done by him and both my mom and mother-in-law had cataract surgery performed by him and they turned out perfectly! My family and I are very happy with Dr. McHale and the entire staff at COA, we wouldn't dream of going anywhere else! read more

I went to COA for routine eye exam. I was seen by Dr Burns and his team. Everyone was very attentive and willing to answer all on my questions. I expressed I would like to try contacts. I have never had contacts before. The team worked with me to help me learn how to put in my contacts. Kortney worked with me tirelessly never loosing patience with me. I'm an older patient and I have hand tremors both of which make me a difficult pt. to deal with. Kortney never showed any signs of impatience, was always quit gentle making the process easy for me even when I was about to give up she did not. I was a patient of Columbus Ophthalmology Associates (Dublin Branch) for years. I was coming once a year for a comprehensive eye exam. I did have big problems with their billing department, but never with ophthalmologists and their assistants. With the change of leadership, it all went to hell. My eye exam was done by a couple of teenagers, one had to remind the other what he was forgetting to do. I was scheduled to see Robert J. Derick M.D. as his first time patient since my previous medical provider retired. At the time I paid for my visit, the receptionist confirmed that he is present and going to see me. Instead I was treated by William Burns O.D. No warning or explanation was given. Ophthalmologists differ from optometrists in their levels of training. I wanted to be seen by a medical doctor and that is what I paid for. Apparently, Robert J. Derick M.D. was not interested in me as a patient. When I asked William Burns O.D. why he is here instead, he informed me that this appointment was "pushed to him" by Robert J. Derick M.D. During this visit I never expressed any desire to buy anything at this facility. Nevertheless, without any explanation he tried to peddle an eye compress from their Optical Shoppe for $45 and some change. You can buy this product for $15 online. Now I am looking for another provider, more professional and respectful treatment, better customer service. read more

The exam took forever and it was by a student. They never asked if we were ok seeing a student. Wasn't friendly and when I asked questions, answered with one word responses. We are still sitting in an annual eye exam and it's already been over an hour and not half way done. read more

Rude, ignorant lady who was supposed to greet us but instead said sign in and sit down. Was rude to the elderly couple next to us and told them they arrived too early so would have to wait. When I asked why we had been waiting for 45 minutes and not seen, she didn't offer to find out how long we would have to wait but said we are working to get you in. Has no caring or sympathy for anybody that requires her to do work. After an hour and a half of waiting without anybody updating us on why, this place is not getting me to come back. Dr. McHale and the staff at COA were very professional, knowledgeable, and thorough when performing tests, and explaining the results and options. They were very non judgemental, and showed their desire to improve my eye sight, and its long term health. They didn't try to up sell me on anything I didn't need or want. I had two cataract surgeries with Dr. McHale, and I couldn't be happier with my results. I just wish I had done it sooner. I would definitely recommend Dr. McHale if you have any thoughts about getting rid of your cataracts. You won't be sorry. read more

Avoid McHale The optometrist told me that because my son's vision is so bad in one eye he did not think wearing glasses would do much except protect the vision in his good eye. That didn't make full sense to me because my son could read the eye chart with his bad eye with the correction through the lens machine. So when McHale came into the room we wanted to clarify. I have never been treated in such a nasty, condescending manner. McHale apparently didn't understand why I was asking him this question and thought my question itself ridiculous. After he proclaimed "Well, I (emphasis on I) am the Doctor" (who knew?). He was so patronizing I left with my questions unanswered and am still unsure the status of my son's eyes. The other doctors here are not his way. My family has had three eye surgeries through this practice over the last 12 years, countless glasses prescriptions, an aborted try at contacts, everyone else we have come into contact with has been nice and professional and accessible. Several years ago, my optometrist referred me to Dr. James McHale @Columbus Ophthalmology Associates because my optometrist suspected a developing cataract condition in my eyes. Ophthalmologists differ from optometrists in their levels of training and in what they can diagnose and treat. As a medical doctor, an ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery. Dr. McHale did confirm the condition existed in a very early stage. He did not rush the idea of surgery but rather suggested the use of specialized glasses until such time that surgery was the only option. He even wrote me a prescription to purchase elsewhere. No pressure. That speaks directly to Dr. McHale's integrity, honesty, compassion and sincerity to do the right thing for his patient. I have maintained regular office visits to monitor this condition and I have never had an issue making an appointment and never experienced a long wait time once checked in for the appointment. This group of doctors treat a wide variety of medical conditions and sometimes there are medical emergencies that must take priority over scheduled appointments. I was one such medical emergency in February 2018. I lost vision in one eye overnight and for no apparent reason. I called the office and they told me to come immediately. My emergency may have caused someone else a longer wait time which is unfortunate and unplanned. My retina was torn and 90% detached. Dr. McHale arranged surgery within one hour which saved my vision. I am grateful. My experience has been positive and I highly respect and recommend Dr. McHale and the team @Columbus Ophthalmology Associates. Please accept my sincerest gratitude and appreciation. I was not even able to get an appointment. The receptionist was absolutely wretched to me when I was trying to make an appointment just in the afternoon. She yelled at me to tell me that there was doctors that were on vacation and she was squeezing me in as an emergency case (She called me 8 days after they were sent the referral) She had the worst attitude that I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Normally I prefer not to write any reviews but I wanted to warn others of their billing practices. I went for a regular annual eye checkup and had VSP insurance. I got a bill for $145 which is outrageous for a regular eye check. When I asked I was told that the Doctor performed couple of additional tests that VSP did not cover, did they find anything in those tests, absolutely nothing. They order tests that are not required and then charge outrageously for them, for comparison, the same test normally costs $35 at other places. read more

I have been going to Dr. McHale for a number of years. Just this past week I had cataract surgery. To be honest - I was very anxious. However, I discovered quickly that it was unnecessary. The process at their surgical center on the east side was VERY smooth and essentially painless. The entire staff exhibited the highest level of professionalism and were focused on making me comfortable and at ease. I too was very pleased with Dr. McHale. All of the visits before surgery was focused on providing me with the best care and the best product for my personal needs. I was referred here for a follow up on a shadow on my optical nerve that I have been tracking for years. My 7:30am appointment is now on it's 2nd hr. after already seeing 2 techs and sitting in 3 waiting rooms. The techs want to keep running basic tests that were just completed 2 weeks ago by my referring doctor. I knew from my first visit to Dr. McHale quite a few years ago that this would be my choice for the future. I have had a couple of procedures done over time and the last in July of this year, when I had new lens' implanted in both eyes. Saw Dr Hickey for retinal issues - not personable at all and made me feel like I was wasting his time. Instead of explaining my condition, had the assistant print off a 1 page paper and hand it to me upon leaving. I have seen Dr Derek at this practice and he is awesome. read more

I took my 2yr old to see Dr Bloom. He was fine...seemed in a rush but apart from that was ok. the nurse or assistant i saw that day was sweet and caring. the lady who helped us choose a frame was also sweet. the rest of the staff seemed impersonal and kind of racist or so i felt. Fast forward to a few months later, my daughter breaks her glasses and they cant replace it for one reason or another even though we paid about $500 for the frames and lenses and paid for a protective plan. I asked them if they could send me her records for her eye test (so i can take it somewhere cheaper and get some cheaper frames as well). The lady said she would send it in 10mins. I called back about 2 hours later and spoke to a male technician who was rude and said he would send by the end of the day. It's been 2 WEEKS now! I've called numerous times and had my husband call too. Every time we call and choose the option to get our medical records it takes us to voicemail and no one has called us back even though we've left msgs EVERY TIME we've called. Finally today i chose the option to make a new appointment and got to speak to a girl. I explained the situation to her and she had no answer or helpful information for me. She was completely rude and demeaning because i have an accent even though she's a receptionist and i'm a dentist....smdh. I ended up arguing with her telling her i need a definite time to call or come there. This girl didn't even ask me my name or my child's name. She started raising her voice at me. I told her that was highly unprofessional and she needs to tone it down before i take a further action. Can you believe this idiot of a receptionist hang up on me! The audacity and impudence! What the hell kind of practice is this?! Do i have to pull teeth out to get records that i paid for! I don't usually write reviews but i'm soo pissed off i need to let people know not to go to this practice. There are many other practices i've referred others to and no one has ever been treated this way. I would have NEVER gone there except my baby was 2 and needed her eyes checked and that was the soonest appointment i got. I would recommend The Childrens Hospital even if it takes months to get in. Now i'm sitting here thinking of what to do. My daughter cannot go to school because she can't see very well and keeps bumping into stuff and getting hurt.
