We love living at Columbus Square. Seaneeba Thompson was the first person we met when we came to see the complex. She showed us several apartments in several of the buildings. We asked for her opinion on living in the city, as we moved from California. She has been so helpful in getting us settled in and is always quick to respond when we have questions. 808 Columbus Avenue or 808 Columbus Square is a horrible community to live in. They building management will lie to you straight to you face. The leasing directors will tell you whatever you want to hear just so you sign a lease. They will tell you the gym is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week---it is not. They will tell you that Laundry Machines work--they do not. And when you tell them the laundry machines don't work, they will tell you to call the laundry machine company directly (isn't that was building management is for?). They will claim to fix maintenance requests, but you'll come back to your apartment and see what nothing was fixed. When I saw my apartment with the leasing agent all my closets were full of shelves, back to the brim. When I moved in, all the shelves disappeared except 3 or 4 of them. When I confronted the building about this they denied that when I saw the apartment there were more shelves. Luckily I had taken a video of the apartment when I saw it with the leasing agent, and he was in the video as well. The video showed all the closets with all the shelves. Then they agreed to put the shelves back. But even then, they came dirty and with coffee rings on them. It's just really a horrible experience to live here. The pool is basically a public pool all day for little kids, the TVs in the gym never, ever, work. And you are only allowed to bring two guests into the pool at any given time, even if there is no one else there. The building is managed horribly. Just beware, they will tell you anything in this building to have you sign the lease, but they are really horrible. It's also not so safe in this area if you go a few blocks north. If you are brave enough to see units in this complex, take the time to ask a bunch of residents if they are happy here. Find residents who were here before UDR came along and destroyed the building. Don't take my word for it, look into it yourself. The front desk staff are great though, it's everyone and everything else that's horrible. read more

I've lived at 775 Columbus for almost two years. Great location, well maintenance, and fantastic front desk. Especially Ismet, the main concierge during the night, is super friendly and helpful! He's a dear soul! I take one star off is because of the laundry room and the gym. Those two could be refurbished a little bit better. read more

I have lived at the 775 building for a year now and couldn't be happier. The doormen are always friendly and the management is always there when you need them. I am moving now to a bigger apartment to the 808 building and the transition has been super easy thanks to the help from management. I could not be happier!! read more

I lived here for a few years in both 795 and 775 The apartments are beautiful (albeit very small). In 795 we had a view of the park, it was very well maintained and any maintenance requests were quickly responded to. What makes this apartment complex particularly great were the front desk - Super helpful, charming and just really nice people. I have deducted two stars because of the management team. When we first moved in the leasing agent left out important information which would have made us reconsider leasing the apartment (regarding the break clause). I would suggest thoroughly ensuring you understand all clauses in full before signing a lease here. read more

I love living here!! The location & amenities are perfect! Overall, the staff is hospitable and obliging. Seaneeba was our leasing agent. She was very accommodating and professional & was able to help us to move in prior to our move in date. The maintenance staff and doormen are very friendly. Our apartment has a great layout with modern yet traditional design throughout. We have great natural light and views from our floor to ceiling windows. In addition, I rarely hear any noise from neighbors which is a testament to solid construction, which is rarity for newer construction. I have nothing but positive things to say about 808 Columbus Square. I would highly recommend living here, if you are looking for a place in the Upper West Side. read more

Finally got $3,400 of my security deposit back - took 12 weeks and was sent just a few days before the 90-day deadline in the lease (which seems excessive anyway). They still owe me $150 or so and no explanation is being provided. Couple emails along the lines of "will check file and get back to you this afternoon ..." - bla bla. Big hassle. Great service while you live there ... but don't count on getting your money back without fighting for it. read more

I moved into 808 Columbus about a month ago. So far, I love the building and my apartment. I have a studio, which feels a little small a times (especially fairly little kitchen storage) but I am crazy about my great view and all the amenities. (And less space means forcing myself to de-clutter a bit. That's a good thing.) The leasing office staff (Michelle, Seaneeba, JT) was helpful throughout the leasing process and they patiently answered all my many questions. I transferred in from another UDR property, and that had some benefits (no application fee, etc.), though the "no hassle transfer" option they advertise is probably more accurately called the "not too many hassles" option--there were a few glitches that required me to be an intermediary between the old property and the new one (such as the UDR website not letting me log in to the new building's site even after I had been "deleted" from the old one) but these were resolved within a few days. The really delightful surprise has been the concierge (lobby desk) staff. They are super professional and helpful, and this makes a huge impact, since they are the ones you see every day. They seem to really take pride in doing their jobs well and in making things run smoothly for you. They remember to follow up on things, too. (One found me a great pet sitter because I mentioned I was looking for one, another helped me get very prompt maintenance service when I first moved in, etc.) Very grateful to them all already (Raymond, Ray, Frank, Jacob, Howard, Christopher, and those whose names I haven't learned yet--I'm sure I will). The maintenance and repair staff (Damien and others) are really on top of things as well--there were a couple of minor repair issues I had when I moved in, and I was super impressed with how quickly these were resolved. All the staff have been thoughtful and very customer service oriented. One caveat I can share about renting at this property is that the website is a bit misleading: there is a list of Community Amenities (pool, lounges, BBQ areas, kids' play areas, etc.), and it is easy to get the impression from the site that these are available to everyone in the Columbus Square community. However, Columbus Square is comprised of 5 buildings, and you can only access the amenities associated with the building in which you live. (For example, you can only use the pool if you are in the 808 building--which seems to be the best equipped and best serviced of the five buildings.) The website doesn't really list the 5 buildings and their respective amenities individually, and most of the photos in the gallery don't say in which building they were taken, so you have to ask. If you look at the list of available apartments, the first three numbers of the apartment number tell you which building it is in. If these types of amenities are important to you, my advice is to ask very specific questions of the leasing office and read all your lease documents carefully before signing them. (I have lived in three UDR-owned buildings in two cities, and each has its quirks. This one seems to have some more reasonable policies than some others, but it's still important to read the fine print and not assume that all important information will be volunteered.) As for the neighborhood, personally I really like it. Fairly close to multiple subway lines and Central Park. I like the nearby retail (the Duane Reade is beautiful--though I'm not a fan of Whole Foods--too chaotic). My apartment faces west, which is probably the quieter direction. I've lived in cities most of my life, and by city standards, it's reasonably quiet for how well located it is. In general, I am quite happy with Columbus Square after the first month. (As some have pointed out, the rent is not cheap, but it is no more than I was paying in San Francisco, so for me it's tolerable.) I had to relocate to New York from the west coast on fairly short notice, and transferring from my previous UDR property to this one turned out to be the perfect solution for me. read more

Very unprofessional leasing office, rude doorman, noisy building, lots of pets, do I need to go on? We had the 2pm appointment and came all the way from Brooklyn, and nobody was there. The doorman said the leasing office is closed, and we're a security threat to the building. We explained that we had the appointment, but he said we need to follow up with emails. We asked to talk to a manager or someone in charge, and he said it is only in case of fire or other security hazards! So they didn't even bother to apologize for messing up our appointment. Stay away! If they treat potential residents like this, I can't imagine how would they treat you when you become a resident. read more

We are new to the building but so far the experience has been fantastic. Sure its very expensive but it is totally in line with the other luxury buildings in the area. You cant beat the location or the Whole Foods, PetCo and Starbucks being on the block. The pool is awesome (however the people that manage it suck so just ignore them), the playroom is great - you can control the temp and cool it down on hot days and the gym and common spaces are fantastic. Apartments are small but liveable and the view is fantastic (windows need a washing). Management is great, I dont know why people are complaining. They took the time to work with us on finding the right spot and continue to help us in any way they can. Particularly like JT. I think the best part of the building is everyone for the most part is super nice. We have met tons of our neighbors and everyone has been very pleasant if not super duper friendly. The doormen are awesome also. I have no idea what the other bad reviews are about but people always hate change so perhaps being around for the switch to UDR is the problem. Nightmare My experience with this building is a nightmare 1. The apartment was never cleaned before the general manager delivered the keys. When we got the keys, the apartment was disgusting - I even found dog poop on the kitchen 2. Gym - for the first three weeks in the building the gym was either closed or completely blocked with furniture of the lounge 3. Heating system: the heating system broke on December 15th and I still haven't seen the repair - I've tried following up, and all they said: someone cancelled your request, we will reopen it. 4. Water leak: the wall around the window has water leak and when I informed the building the only thing I got was: there other 5 units with the same problem, we still don't know how to fix it. 5. Pool: the general manager sent emails on the past two holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) announcing that the pool would be closed for maintanance. Even after complaints from many units requesting to use the pool during the holidays, they said they were getting prepared for the high season (6 months from now). 6. Hot water: there was an incident where the general manager had to sent an email to all units when the building had no hot water (in the cold days of November) 7. Internet - it took 4 weeks for the internet provider to find how to install my unit modem - the problem was that the previous renter changed the configuration and the building did not fix it before delivering the keys to us 8. Mail box keys: they gave us the wrong key to our mail box and we couldn't access our mail for 2 weeks All this happened in less than 4 months here - we found it would be important to share this info for other considering rent at 808 Columbus Square. read more

I recently moved into the 795 Columbus Square building. So far, everything's been great. I love the building and my studio. The neighborhood and location is pretty laid back and family-friendly, but not boring. There is a lot of retail nearby and it is close to a couple of subway stations and Central Park, which makes everyday life very easy and comfortable. The UDR staff is also awesome. Michelle has been helpful both during the leasing process and after, always taking time to patiently and thoroughly answer my questions and concerns, which were many, since I moved in from another country. All doormen and maintenance staff are also great: always smiling and welcoming, ready to help you and making everything easy for you. They have all made me feel very safe and taken care of. All of these is worth the super expensive rent. However, I can agree with some of the other reviews about the website being a little misleading about the community amenities. I would highly recommend UDR to be more specific about which building has what amenities, because not all of us could visit the apartments before moving in. read more

I have lived at 808 Columbus Avenue (Columbus Square) for 4 years since 2010. It has been a great pleasure. All employees are wonderfully attentive including the concierge, door, maintenance and facility staff. I am sad that for work reasons, I will be leaving such a wonderful place I have called home for so many years. The location and amenities are great. Accessible to both the 1,2,3 and B and C trains and the M7 and M11 buses. The growing number of retail businesses in the complex are diverse and meet many needs. read more

I have lived in the 801 Amsterdam building for just over one year now, and in ten years living in NYC I have never felt the need to write a review about my apartment building. On November 15th our heat went out in the building on one of the coldest days of the year to date and was off the entire day until Friday am. On Tuesday the 20th the building said they were doing maintenance on the boiler in the building and the heat would be off from 9-5. Wednesday at 4am I awoke to freezing cold temperatures in my apartment. Our heat was out for most of Thanksgiving day as well as the entire weekend. Thursday and Fridays temperatures dropped into the teens. The management did not send out a single email (much of our building had zero heat) explaining the situation or when our heat would be restored. Our heat did not work again until the following Monday 11/26. I could see that they were using their maintenance crew (who are great) to try to solve what was a major problem instead of hiring a professional crew adept in dealing with heating/AC issues. Now on Dec 5th, 10 days after supposedly correcting the problem, our heat is not working once again. We have a four month old child and obviously it is essential to live in a building that provides heat, which this building has failed to do so far this winter. The doormen, porters, maintenance crew are all fantastic and the building is very nice, but I would never recommend this company to anyone based on their lack of providing basic services like heat in the Winter. read more

When you rate this apartment please use the name of the building 808 Columbus Square in the name so Google will find it!! We moved into this building thinking it was pure luxury. When we got to 808 Columbus Avenue we found out that the pool is basically a public pool, filled with kids all day from 9-6. You're not allowed to use it during this time. They are building a parking lot in the back, which will mean a lot of noise and construction. The elevators never work properly. Go spend your money someplace else, it is not worth living here. read more

I was looking for a place to stay for a long time and finally landed at 808 Columbus where I stay since the end of February. I love the place - it's proximity to the Central Park and subway, the neighbourhood, view from my window on the 14th floor, services level. Communicating with the management company is always easy and nice. I am a particular fan of the swimming pool, I swim literally every day. And I like a home atmosphere about it. We lived at 808 Columbus for two years. We paid UDR around $10k per month for the apartment, storage and electricity. The good part is that ON SITE people are great - doormen, maintenance and even the office staff. The bad part is that UDR itself has horrendous policies that are greedy and lack any smidgen of loyalty. We were overcharged when we moved out and can't get a reasonable answer to our issues. Yes, you will love the folks on site AND you'd best keep your eyes open when it comes to the real deal. We would NEVER rent from UDR again and will tell all of our friends! read more

My husband and I recently moved out of these apartments after renting for 14 months. As other reviewers have stated, the apartments are nice and new but very poorly/hastily built. And while the doormen and other staff are AMAZING, the management is by far, the absolutely worst I have ever dealt with in over 12 years of renting my own place. Originally when we moved in, the original management ran the company, and things were ok. Yes, our rent was insane compared to anything else in the area, and it took several attempts (by phone and email) to get someone from management to come and go over some issues we had, but we were overall fairly happy. My only issue was the shiesty way in which our lease signing was handled- only upon our arrival to sign, were we informed that the lease was in fact 14 months (not 12). At this point we really had no choice but to agree, as we had no other apt options and were planning on moving the next day. I felt that this was an incredibly unsavory way to do business, but we resolved to let it go and enjoy our new home. Then, things got worse. The new company came in and people started moving out. This complex consists of 4 buildings, all of which have large retail spaces at the bottom. Our apartment building housed a full grocery store in the bottom- one of our favorite things about it. When UDR came in, pay cuts for the entire staff ensued, already ridiculous rent prices were raised, and the building started to empty, including the downstairs grocery. When we moved out, UDR still hadn't been able to rent a SINGLE open retail space in that building. A cost I'm sure will be passed along to it's current residents and staff. To make matters worse, our 14 month lease ended December 31st, and oh, UDR doesn't do month to month leases. They do not care that you're moving in the worst time possible, between holidays, or that you never really had a choice but to sign a 14 month lease. If we wanted to stay, we would have had to sign a new lease, and pay a significantly higher rent than we were before. Left with no option, my husband and I were forced to move out between Christmas and New Years. We made it work, even with UDR making it difficult on us every step of the way. Finally, as if all of that weren't enough, they straight up GOUGED us for every single penny they could take before returning what was left of our security deposit. And this was done in what I consider the most dishonest and underhanded way possible. We never received a move out inspection, and then we were charged for things that were not wrong with the apartment. There was damage we were responsible for- a closet door that needed to be replaced. However, instead of having their maintenance team replace the door (which, btw, they had plenty of, as I saw several sitting in the maintenance hallway when we moved out), they brought in an outside contractor who charged much more than necessary- more than twice the amount if we had bought and replaced the door ourselves. This is all even more frustrating considering that our closet doors would come off the track and were in such bad shape that maintenance would have to come and put it back up on almost a MONTHLY basis. On top of all of that, for several months when I went into their online system to pay rent, it showed a lowered amount as due (about $30-60 less than normal). I mistakenly assumed that we were being credited for all of the promised amenities that never came to pass (check out the sign with "bowling alley" scratched out in the basement- real classy), and simply hit "pay in full" every month. Well, according to UDR, I was paying less than I should have, and as such our deposit was docked. However, I never once received notice that I wasn't paying the amount of rent required- yet another incredibly shady move by the management. Initially, UDR was entirely unresponsive on these matters, and when we finally got a person that actually responded, my husband had to go back and forth with management for over a month to get it resolved (and by resolved, I mean, worked out to the point where we aren't going to bother anymore- I am in no way satisfied with where things were left). ***If all of that is too much to read, hopefully you'll just skip to the end, and I'll summarize. UDR does not care about it's tenants or staff, and they will find every and any way to take as much money from them as possible. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! The buildings are beautiful and the door men are wonderful, but that will be the end of any good parts in your rental experience. Management's complete lack of care for their tenants, and the dishonest and unprofessional way they handle things absolutely disgusts me. By the end of our lease my husband and I couldn't wait to get out of there. The way UDR handled things left us with a sour taste in our mouths- we will never, ever consider renting from them again, and I caution anyone else to do the same. read more

Since the new management has arrived, the quality of the services other than those provided by the doorman have deteriorated. The new management fails to realize that the tenants already pay expensive rent and the services/location do not command higher rent. They also are rude and behave as though it is not a place where people call home. If you're looking to move to Columbus Square, then I suggest you check out other building where the rent is justified by the neighborhood (there are virtually no restaurants/bars within a short walking distance) and quality of the amenities. read more

Speaking of 795 Columbus: I moved in right when the building was opening and was attracted by the location, the fact it was new and the floorplan. I was said that we would be able to use the pool of 808, but this never happened, I also quickly found out that the apartment finish was really cheap... Nothing that bad though until Dec 2011 / Jan 2012 when UDR took over from Columbus Square Managment. The staff (who BTW was really nice!) started to look demotivated by the new management (easy to understand when you Mngt!!) UDR changed the internal system for mail notification (didn't work for weeks), started to raise the rents, didn't just do what they are supposed to do in terms of Management: UDR's job is only cash collecting and cost reducing... They don't deal with questions or issues you may have ...So if you feel like giving them more money for a weak service, go & rent there. If you like buildings that have consideration for both their staff and their tenants, find anything else...but UDR! Also they like to keep deposit for very bad reasons! Still the area is wonderful, you get all you need next door and that is worth 1 star :-) read more

My complain is about 801 on Amsterdam ave!!! My husband and I moved in when this building went up. Along with some of the door men not doing their jobs, some of the gym equipments are always out of order. If you are a gym rat or like working out, this is not the place to live. The equipments have been out of order or not functioning properly for weeks. Also the tenants adjust the temp to their workout needs, which is bad thing because some of them turn the temp. completely off, and the gym which is located in the sub cellar has no windows. Spoke to management and they said that they have no solution for that. Basically I should tell them don't turn the air off. WTF I'm too busy and pay too much rent in this building...to fight with a tenant about temp control. Also be aware!!! some of the tenants have trainers coming in for sessions and the gym becomes very crowded with no equipments available. We are not renewing our lease at the end of the year, and we're not recommending this as a place to live. We are going into 2 yrs of living in this building and we foresee the building services getting worst. read more

How about living in 801 Amsterdam ave and paying anywhere between 3k to 10k per month rent. No working elevators so if you are in a wheel chair or live on any floor past 4th you are totally screwed. Do they care NO !!!! Walk up 15 flights with bags of groceries or stuff. Do they put extra porters in to help tenants with bringing there package's up ? No that would require some customer service thought to help with a bad situation !!! The leasing office steals money from your security deposit at the end of your lease by fabricating outrageous expenses. I was charged several 100s of dollars in cleaning fees, etc. after I had a maid come and clean the place top to bottom. I lost a key, which was apparently worth $150. Totally absurd! read more

Horrible sales manager!!! Her name is Jaqueline Thomas. I wish i could give ZERO star. I've lived in 805 Columbus for the last 6 months as the first apartment after my marriage. The heater has been making the loudest noises ever, and when I approached the sales manager (there was no community manager to talk to!) about the situation, she responded with the rudest manner ever. She is seriously the WORST person I've ever met in my life. She yelled at me and told me to get out of her office. She told me that she won't allow "this kind of negativity" in her office. I told her that i am going to sue the apartment for not providing us the heat as soon as possible, but she told me that I should do whatever I wish to do, in the most dismissive way. I have never written a Yelp review before, but I felt the absolute need to do this. In New York City in the winter, the home temperature is supposed to higher than 65 degrees. My house has been under 55 degrees for the last 4 days. This is ILLEGAL. The apartment contract makes the tenant in a disadvantageous position when going to court. So, that is why she can behave in this kind of absurdest manner. I've lived in the city for 5 years and 3 different apartments. and THIS IS THE WORST HOUSE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 808 Columbus Avenue is TRUE LUXURY LIVING with service that exceeds all expectations. From the moment you walk thru the building entrance you are in in the midst of excellence. From the wonderful doormen to the always professional front desk manager who provides you with waiting deliveries and will accurately address any issue and find a solution or direct you to the appropriate party. The Leasing office is SUPERB with seamless customer service. Having lived at 808 for one year in a one bedroom, we decided to look at two bedrooms and worked with Violet and Aaron who found us the perfect place. We moved and as with all moves, certain things required attention. I sent an online request form to UDR and within a day Eddie one of the two professional repair people completed the job. A few days later I had a few more things and called the front desk and within an hour Damian the other repair person was here and now everything is PERFECT! And...while Damian was working here, Avni, the Manger of UDR stopped by to introduce himself and ask how we were enjoying the new apartment and see if there was anything else that needed addressing. I simply can't imagine a better maintained building. The gym, pool and three block outdoor area are situated on the third floor. The two year old gym equipment was recently replaced by new, professional LifeFitness equipment and the numerous lounge chairs were replaced as well. The outside is like a park with grass and trees tables and chairs, lounges with thick cushions and beautiful gardens. The beautiful pool is enclosed by glass, floor to ceiling glass doors that open to the outside lounge area in warm weather and all is beautifully maintained. And if this is not perfection the third floor also is home to a beautiful lounge which can also be reserved for parties. There is also an inside baby proof toddler play area with baby friendly tube slides, climbing tubes and soft ground to play on. Living at 808 Columbus Avenue is PERFECT LIVING. I am paying a ridiculous amount in monthly rent and can't even use the amenities I was promised when signed my lease! Last Saturday (May 2,2015) night me and my husband were trying to have a relaxing evening at the lounge area but instead we were told that one of the building managers has a party there and that the lounge is unaccessible for the entire night. Afterwards we couldnt fall asleep because the same party had some abnoxious loud music playing through the entire night. We are paying thousands of dollars in rent to have luxury amenities available to us. But find out that this is not the case. Stay away from 808 Columbus and UDR.Dont rent here! read more

I've been living in the 795 building for almost 6 months and it has been a great experience. I'm a little surprised by the negative comments and was initially turned off from this building due to the bad reviews. I'm glad I took a look at this building for myself and didn't let the reviews sway me. I worked with leasing agent Seaneeba and she was so sweet, helpful and patient. I've never experienced such an easy leasing and move in process. They will not let you move in until you can prove you have rental insurance during the times of your lease so beware of that. When I moved in my apartment was immaculate. I am a neat freak so for me to have to not do a repeat clean says a lot. The upkeep of the building is great. My apartment is great. The coldest it's been so far is in the upper 30s and don't feel like I'm going to freeze to death like all the other apartments I lived in. The apartment has great insulation and heating units. I've only had 1 maintenance issue and that was taken care of that day. The staff and doormen are all great. The only gripes I have is I wish the gym was bigger with more machines because I ended up keeping my NYSC membership. On the other hand you don't pay to use the gym yearly like at all the other apartments I looked at. Also the rent is costly, but this is NYC. As far as it being unsafe going more north, most of the places I looked at had an area north, south, east, or west that was "unsafe." That is unfortunately how NYC is set up. My solution to that is to not walk more north of the building at night by yourself. I'll probably buy something in 3 years, but I can see myself living here for those 3 years if things stay the same. read more

Weare residents of Columbus square. We have lived on the upper westside for the past 25 years. We sold our place at the Avonova and moved up to 808. We were drained by the amenities staff people and shopping. Whole foods,Homegoods,Modells,TJMaxx,and Michaels. Although our space,is smaller, we love our new home. From the onset, the sales staff Molly Bloom and Michelle are consummate professionals. They were helpful and resourceful and I love seeing them in the building and always Shari g a hello and smile. The staff Avi,Carmello,Harold,Raymond,Greg,Harris,Yavi,mike,and all the others are special and not just around the holidays. It is a pleasure to come home to our new apartment, and ,now, almost two years later we are looking at larger space within the building . We look forward to the updating of the hallways and the new gym equipment and the spring platings on the 3rd floor outside space. We hope others join our diversified community! read more
