Three days ago, on one of the hottest days in SD, our AC broke. I blasted out some yelp messages to various AC repair businesses. Chris was one of the fastest responders with a very reasonable troubleshooting fee. He was at our house in less than 24 hours from my 1st inquiry. Turned out it was a bad capacitor and our AC was running fine as soon as he replaced it. We also decided to have him assess our other AC unit and to service both. He returned 2 days later for that work and determined we needed Freon in one ac unit which also had a soon to fail capacitor. He was very professional, knowledgeable and efficient. A leak in our A/C unit was coming through the ceiling and we were afraid the ceiling was going to come in. EVERY place we called was unable to send an "emergency technician" over for a week!! Never work with this company. The owner Chris is an incompetent jerk off. He will make you promises and then you will not see him for weeks. Mind you, I had a new born and this was during the hottest part of the summer. He replaced a coil in the attic and did a terrible job. Ultimately resulting from a huge leak that required lots of drywall replacement. Even then it was over the span of many months. I eventually just had another reputable company come and finish the work which they verified was terrible. Save your self a headache and find another company to work with. read more

Our family hired Combs Custom Cooling & Heating to perform work for us on our AC unit back on 13 July 2015. It had a slow leak somewhere in the system, which Chris Combs, the owner, determined during his assessment. Chris sent another employee repair to our AC unit, who ultimately caused several other problems within our household. There were water leaks in four areas of the house that resulted in our floors and walls needing to be torn out to be replaced. Chris admitted responsibility for all of the damages, and brought in a contractor friend to perform the work on the repairs. The person performed very poorly (and slowly), so Chris agreed to find a new contractor to finish the work. Chris admitted responsibility for payment of the contractor, material cost, cleaning cost, and extra cost of electricity considering the amount of fans and other machinery being used in our home for such an extended amount of time. Chris was very evasive since the damage took place, rarely answering calls or texts. I sent him our recommendation for a contractor who could start immediately upon receipt of a signed work order on 25 August 2015, but received no response. I found our flooring available at a local southern California shop, and prepared the order for him on 6 August, but he never placed the order as he promised. I even got him a discount on the flooring cost! He promised us via a phone call on 28 August that he would place the order and sign the work order before 1pm that day. He failed to do so and continued to ignore all texts and calls after that. That same day he asked my husband to pay for the flooring, and hire the contractor (with us being responsible for payment), and said he "would pay (us) back this weekend". We had our floors and walls torn up in a large portion of our livable space for THREE MONTHS due to failed repairs he and his team made to our home and subsequently ABANDONED. It was also very frustrating that we have had our 2 and 3 year old sons displaced from their rooms, and breathing in and walking through all of the debris, plaster, paint, etc. NO consideration was made to keep the areas clean and contained to minimize effects on our family. We expected the work to take a few weeks at most, instead it took THREE MONTHS between attempting to deal with Chris and later making a claim through his bond. Note, he is NOT INSURED, only bonded, which was a greater amount of work and time to prove and receive reimbursements for repairs. We are very disappointed with how this whole situation turned out, and hope this does not end up happening to anyone else willing to read and heed by our review! read more

So during our recent heat wave my AC went out. I looked around and found Combs Custom and looked at the reviews and they were all good so I decided to give them a call. Outside condenser took a dump last week during a bad heat wave. I called three other businesses first and every one was booked solid for days. Called Combs Custom Heating And Air and got Chris on the phone who said he would be in area and could fit me in same day. Woo Hoo! He was in and out quickly, replaced the capacitor and got things going. So grateful. A couple hours after he left I didn't feel a difference in the air. Ok, I don't really write service reviews, most of what I'm inspires me has to do with food. I don't know why....BUT I must give credit where credit is do, whether I'm hungry or not. So my mom lives in a home in Chula Vista. It was built in the 60's and only has a heater/furnace. This summer it has been insanely hot and she has been suffering. So, she decided to take the plunge and get one of them fancy new central cooling systems. She thought it was going to be incredibly expensive and it would have been if she had gone with one of the first two companies she had solicited. But she looked further and luckily stumbled on Chris Combs. See my mom can get easily spooked. If she feels like someone is trying to flood her with a billion options or just rub her the wrong way, sell her a bunch of extras, its over. Its gonna be another sweaty year. I was surprised at how methodical and understanding Mr. Combs was to her needs. Took the time to explain every detail and listened and dealt with all her exhausting questions. (I dont know how he had the patience) After ironing out what she needed and being able to use a lot of what she already had, it was a fraction of the price and in a fraction of the time. If there were an option to give no stars, I would of selected that. After initially looking for a local person from Chula Vista to install a/c in our home as well as a new furnace, I came across Combs Custom Cooling & Heating on yelp. Even though Combs Customs only had a few yelp reviews, they were all 5 stars and positive so I decided to give them a try. When I first called to set up an appointment, Chris answered the phone and asked if he could call me back in 15 minutes since he was driving which was no problem. However after an hour past by, I soon learned that Chris was not going to call me back as he said that he would. I gave Chris the benefit of the doubt though. I figured maybe he lost my phone number which sometimes happens. So I decided to call him AGAIN the next day to try and schedule an appointment again. This time he answered and we were able to set up an appointment for the following day. The appointment time scheduled came and passed by and Chris was NO WHERE to be seen or heard from. This was more than enough proof to me that not only is Chris unprofessional , but unorganized as well. We hired Chris from Combs Custom cooling to install central Air Conditioning at our house. After he did a thorough inspection of our home he recommended installing new ducts since the existing ducts were adequate for heat but not for A\C. He gave us an excellent bid (we had had two previous higher bids) and began work shortly. He arrived on time and was there to answer any questions we had during the process. He finished everything up in a timely manner and we were very happy with the quality of work they provided. We now have a much cooler house during those hot summer months! I needed the ducts in the attic replaced as the previous owner squashed them. Chris was my first call to find someone. He came out that day. Called when he knew he was going to be a little bit late [greatly appreciated]. and after chatting a bit went up to the attic to see what was needed. At Chris's suggestion we added new larger vents to 3 rooms to add a little more heat to those areas. I am so glad he did this. He wrote me a complete estimate of all the parts and labor he would be charging. I never called anyone else for an estimate as I felt so comfortable with Chris. He came the next day and in a very timely manner he completed the work and stuck to the estimate. Then a week later on one of the coldest nights this year, my heat went out. I called Chris and got him, not an an answering machine! He came right over as it was so cold and my great grandchildren were visiting and had colds. Furnace was fixed and the price was so extremely reasonable I have decided this is the person I will always call for this type of work. Even though summer is over, I wanted to finally get my A/C back up again. I delayed fixing it because a few years back, another company was charging me more than $600 bucks to fix a freon leak. I called some of the "big name" companies desperately hoping they would have same-day availability to fix the unit because it was one of those incredibly hot days, and we had guests coming over that evening. None of them were available, but I was able to get a hold of Chris. My luck that he had availability that afternoon. When he arrived, he worked quickly, was very courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. Chris is very professional and friendly. I will absolutely call on him again for all of my future air conditioning/heating needs. When I comes to price, I have no one else to compare him to. So, I honestly do not know if I paid to much for his services. The fee seemed a lot more than what I expected, but, when it comes to a technician you pay for what they know, not for what they do. Either way, he was here the same day I called him, on a National Holiday. So I assume his rate might have been a bit higher than usual. Either way, I'm extremely happy with the service. Chris saved the day! My home A/C went out and it was 90 degrees outside. I knew there was a strong possibility that every air conditioning company would be slammed with calls during the current heat wave. I read the reviews on Combs Custom and took a chance. Chris responded right away. I could tell he was busy but that didn't matter. He came out within a couple of hours to take care of the problem. He was very honest and up front. He allowed me to watch while he troubleshooted the problem. Most guys don't want anyone hovering over them while they work. I personally never trust people like that. Chris, the owner, and David are incredible. When meeting Chris for the first time, he was not pushy. He demonstrated good training, knowledge and ethics. The project was moving heater to attic in a 37 year old two story house and adding an air conditioning system. Chris admitted he under-bidded, not foreseeing some of the obstacles that came into play. We offered to pay them extra and Chris refused stating it was his problem. On two of the days David worked for over 12 hours. On several occasions Chris also was present as well as a specialist in electrical issues. they were also prompt on agreed arrival times. They also pointed out some issues with a contractor doing a bathroom remodel at the same time. The men knew the codes-regulations well and also communicated all phases of what was being done.
