Once Mom was able to return home we knew she would need assistance during the day while we were away. Lauren was mentioned during a support group for a rare disease my Mother has. She was very thorough, communicative and listened to what my Mother needed. It took a reasonable amount of time to find the right caregivers that meshed well with Mom. But, that was expected, as new people enter one another's lives it takes time to find the right fit. Lauren's team literally saved her life. Part of Mom's neurodegenerative disease impacts her ability to chew, and swallow. While taking her morning vitamins one day, Mom began choking and the visiting angel with her immediately knew what to do. Had the caregiver not been with Mom that day she wouldn't be us. Unfortunately because the disease continued to progress we eventually had to find a suitable home to provide her with 24 hour assistance. Had Mom's disease not progressed, we would not have stopped working with Lauren and her Visiting Angels team. Lastly, I believe SD Visiting Angels was previously owned and operated by someone else, prior to Lauren taking ownership. I cannot speak to the caliber of the earlier company, however, Lauren is a knowledgeable, genuine and caring person. We are thankful we were able to work together to source caregivers for our loved one.

This review is a long time coming. This company used to be called Home Care Assistance and their…read morebusiness model is to have a case manager who serves as the coordination and contact point for the client and the caregivers, rather than just schedulers who blindly send people off to old people's houses. This is at least their value proposition and why they charge more than other agencies. My mom passed away in June of 2024 and over the course of two and a half years she had three different case managers, so not exactly the model of stability. That said, two of them were professional if not necessarily that effective or useful, which was at least partially an organizational issue. One thing to note is that the quality of caregivers is probably not very different at other similar agencies. We also had a couple caregivers from Coast Care and I don't think they were any better or worse than those from The Key. The Key (as I'm sure they all do) claims to train their folks, but many of them routinely ignored their supposed training, such as not taking checks directly from the client. The real crux of the issue with this agency, other than the questionable ROI for the higher hourly rate, was an issue with one particular caregiver for whom The Key refused to take responsibility. My mom was essentially confined to a recliner and virtually never left her apartment. Yet, at some point, bed bugs were discovered in her unit. When the facility maintenance employees told my mom about this, the caregiver (from The Key) who was there at the time blurted out to them that she had had them four times at her home, as if to suggest that it was not a big issue. When an administrator at my mom's facility informed The Key about this, they followed up with the caregiver, who denied saying it and took offense at being suspected of being the source despite having a recurring issue in her own home. There was literally no one else it could have been but ONE of their caregivers, who were there every day. My mom had to pay a shocking amount of money to have her room treated and, rather than making a goodwill concession to pay a small portion for the caregiver who was the very likely source, The Key simply took the caregiver at her word and made no effort to take a small amount of responsibility. From my experience, the elder industry is full of companies happy to exploit one of society's most vulnerable segments and The Key is no different. Please be aware of this if you are in the unfortunate situation of needing services and treat these companies as a last resort. It is very expensive and they won't fix the messes they make.

As my father in law is now approaching 102 (next month), the level of care is now essential and "round the clock". With us living on the East Coast and for my wife's father to be able to remain in his own home, having a fully reliable and conscientious service was not only very important but now has become a true requirement. Because of the commitment and dedication of the owner and a number of also extraordinary staff members, we believe that the care provided has most often been truly excellent. Over now more than 2 years, Assisting Hands has earned our Trust and Confidence. When a caregiver was unavailable, Assisting Hands has always been agile and "there" to assure continuous "on site" coverage, without exception. We thank the owner and a large number of caregivers for their fine efforts, often exceeding high expectations, and delivering a level of service that has permitted my father in law to be able to stay in his home, as he very much wanted and currently desires. Should there be any questions that could be addressed by us, kindly contact the owner of Assisting Hands for our Western, New York contact information. It is true for us that a partnership with an organization such as Assisting Hands works best when there is an active family support person(s) in full contact with the service provider. The owner of Assisting Hands has gone well beyond more than both normal and high expectations to personally do everything possible to provide quality, timely, and proactive service. We have been very impressed and appreciative for the excellent overall personal services received. We very much recognize what Assisting Hands has provided for our family. We are grateful to my wife's sister for finding Assisting Hands and initiating its services, and to Nina for her caring approach in running her business. JGU
