Proper comedy club with great lineup and maybe the best cost-effective offer in NY. While waiting to be seated you go through the amazing list of comedians who frequented the place, a cool pass time. We had laughs from around 8 PM till 11PM without lengthy breaks. The drinks are not bad and prices ok for NY We did not try the food which is very limited, something like 4-5 items(burger, sausage, popcorn, etc.) Eventually, we even got a free ticket for future visit just for staying till the end!! read more

Went here with as a part of a meet up group (free entry, 2 drinks minimum). The meet up was organised by a few of the stand up comics themselves (or some of the wannabe comics rather). The line up seemed interesting at first. The line up mentioned to us when we signed up was for 6 people for 1.5 hrs. We ended up sitting through 5 minute sets of at least 20 people. All the acts were a huge let down, it seemed more like an Open Mic Night. Their quality of stand up routines was terrible. Most of the comics forgot their jokes, they stopped and scrolled through their material on their phones and pieces of paper while on stage. Extremely poor content, very clichéd repetitive jokes. They were not engaging at all. With the reputation of this venue, we expected them to be more selective with their performers. The location does have decent amount of space. However, most of the seating is crammed so close to the stage, we sat in the first row and came back with a sprained neck, due to craning our neck for 3 hours straight. Most of the performers stood towering over us and talk, with no sense of using stage space with respect to the audience. Overall very poorly organised show. As mentioned by a few other reviewers, drinks are on the pricey side. However, they had decent service. read more

Was a bit disappointed my last night's show. For a Saturday 10pm set, most comics just seemed to be "winging it" half the time (i.e. doing crowd work for 50% of their set). This is kind of a pet peeve of mine in general with most comedy clubs these. I have a great deal of respect for professional comedians who work really hard at honing their art and craft (at the end of the day, to be one of "the greats" like Seinfeld, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy or Chappelle in their primes, Gaffigan, or even the now unmentionables like Dr. Coz or C.K., etc--still some of the most brilliant comedians all time; personal demons aside) you have to first and foremost be a good writer, work at your material, and and refine it over and over again which each show. What makes the aforementioned such geniuses is that they can get up on stage and be funny every time, and it seems totally natural, like they're just "talking" and made it up on the spot (newsflash, wanna-be rockstars: they didn't). You can watch them perform the same set 2x, 10x, or 50x and it's *still* funny. That's why they are masters of their craft. (I once caught CK at Comedy Cellar, then the next day saw him do the exact same set on Saturday Night Live--I think he even was wearing the same suit, LOL, love it!--and it STILL made me laugh both times; it was even funnier the second time, because that's what professionals do--they work their material on local gigs and refine it). You don't just become great by accident and asking everyone, "So where you guys from? Who's from out of town?" etc. This is so hackneyed and played out. Sorry guys, is this really the best we can do?? Also a lot the comedy felt very localized (yes, it's funny to hear about how ghetto the subway is, I guess if you're a tourist, but after hearing these kinda jokes for 30 years it gets kinda stale). Where is all the fresh new talent? And when things did veer towards "the edge," it just felt uncomfortable for audience members involved, not "raw" or cutting edge. (Calling out people in the crowd who may be there on date, in a new relationship, or whatever social situation you have no idea about, doesn't make for an entertaining night. It just leaves some people going home upset or questioning their relationship status, and makes for a potentially long, awkward drive or commute home. We can all laugh about how dumb both men and women can be to each other. But one doesn't pay, or take a partner or date to a comedy show, to be publicly humiliated.) Don't get me wrong; I'm not talking about being P.C.--screw all these Gen X, Y, Z and Millennials who are "offended" if heaven forbid you make a joke that may be perceived by anyone as homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. It's a comedy show, people. Ever watched Eddie Murphy or Richard Prior? They couldn't even do their act today, it's gotten so bad with YouTube and all these moronic "sensitive" people in the world. But good comedy is an art. You have to put in 110% into it. Please people, enough with the crowd work half the show and just "wingin' in"! The best thing I can say about last night's set is at least the service was good. The servers came around regularly, not just once per hour like a lot of clubs, so we didn't have to wait long for food or drinks. Keep in mind, they do just serve popcorn and a very limited bar menu though, so definitely get dinner somewhere else first. You should go there mostly for the show, not the food! read more

I love comedy clubs but this one was not it. Comics weren't funny at all and the service was very intrusive when trying to enjoy the show they would constantly ask you to order to fulfill the two item minimum and interrupt during the entire show. Wandered around NYC for a bit and came across this comedy club. The place is everything you expect out of a comedy club. We were greeted at the door and told the show was starting at 8pm. Ifs a 2 hour show. They only do cash which is weird considering the times but maybe that's what makes sense for them. Twenty dollar entry fee and then a two item per person requirement once inside. It doesn't have to be alcoholic drinks they had a few snack options and refreshments. If you're looking for 5 star food service go to a restaurant, this is a comedy show. With that said the drinks I ordered were delicious I tried the Kamikazes md the Blood of the Dragon. The servers were also very hard working and made sure everyone had what they needed. Came here last night as part of Yelp's Passport to the UES event and had a great time. Even though I have lived here in the area for many years it was only the second time I have been at Comic Strip Live. It was worth the wait as some of these guys were really funny! One thing I have learned though is that you never, ever, want to sit up by the stage. Unless you want every comedian to include you in their act, and make fun of you all night! We chose a comfy seat for two further back that had a direct view of the stage. As it's a smaller cozy kind of place there really is not a bad seat in the house and the speaker system makes it easy to hear every word and joke. Small menu of drink and food items. Much of the food is supplied by Big Daddy's down the street. This is where they get you though, as a mixed drink will run around $14 and a basket of popcorn was $8! Ouch! I saw there is an option for unlimited non-alocolic drinks too. Still, for the free admission and a night out it was worth a few rounds of pricy cocktails. Every once in a while there are people along 86th street handing out free admission passes so keep an eye out when walking by. Place is clean overall and has a terrific bunch of servers working the floor. The main event comedians were very good and got funnier as the night went on. The show ran for over three hours until the main eventers left at around 11:30 and then the newbies came on stage to try out new material. That was our cue to leave. Comfortable venue, good service, awesome comedians. What's not to love about this place? Comic Strip live is one of those places where you can expect raunchy comedy, yet in a somewhat respectable manner. And don't come in late like I did! You'll be clowned on for the entire evening. For the evening that I went, Lenny Marcus, a few other locals + one guy known as "The Latin Lunatic" headlined a roughly three hour show. Drinks range from $12-13 for bottled beer, and a little more for the mixed fruity drinks. There is a two drink minimum purchase at this location as well. I saw nachos being served, yet uncertain if there are entrees offered. Bathrooms are teeny tiny, yet pretty clean. If taking the subway, you have about a 4 block walk, but who cares? You are on the Eastside, one of the more high energy places in all of the city. Will definitely be back. read more

If you sign up for promotions most will have offers when they anticipate slow nights. So we called up a few hours before the show asking about a Groupon offer that we hadn't purchased and were told to come by. They took care of us, as in scoring a "living in the neighborhood" free discount. Service was speedy and efficient and I loved my Godiva chocolate martinis. So...a tip to anyone new to comedy clubs. Do be sure you are comfortable with who you go with. Think twice before going with the in-laws or a first date or the boss. Raunch Alert! We were rolling on the floor laughing to some of the raunchiest jokes ever, which is of course what made them so funny. I've been here twice, once in 2007 and again in 2009. I had fun both times, but I have to take off 2 stars because i HATE the drink minimum of 2 drinks or $20 which brings the grand total for a night here to $40+. It's sorely overpriced, but not only that, they've got minions out in Times Square misleading people and selling their tickets. They tell people you can buy two sodas instead of alcoholic drinks, but the sodas turned out to be $10 each. And the guy who sold my friend and I the tickets asked if I was her MOM!! Unbelievable that he still made the sale. lol. Anyways.. The comedians here are consistently funny. There's nothing like a little bit of crude humor and raucous laughter once in a while. The flow is good. The place is pretty small and intimate, so you get to know audience members and where they are from based on the comedians which repeatedly pick on the same people. Being the only Asian people in the crowd, I did feel just a little bit conspicuous; being seated in the corners definitely helped me avoid an Awkward Moment. It was kind of funny how the comedians had to keep drinking to keep their buzz to say the kinds of things they were saying.. The best thing about this place though..... the first time I came here, Chris Rock showed up as the very last act and performed new stuff for about 1.5 hours. Can you imagine anything more awesome on a vacation to NYC?? =) I later discovered he was a busboy here and it's where he learned the ropes to the biz. Just a few blocks away from the 6, walking distance to a Pinkberry for after or pre-show dessert. Cute decor. The bathroom is so small I could barely turn around to sit on the toilet. If you can't laugh at yourself though you shouldn't be there;) I wasn't counting but I figure around 20 minute sets from 5 comics - though one seemed put off by an audience member and ended after 5 minutes. Wish I could remember their names but the blonde woman who looked like Rollins from Law and Order SVU was good as was the Dominican guy and the last guy was the best of the night - sounded like Morgan Freeman lol. I been to this comedy club many times and for some reason its probably one of my favorites. Yes they sit everyone on top of each other and the drinks/food aren't cheap but hey this is NYC where nothing is cheap. The crowd is always lively and the comedians are hysterical. I have to say very few times I been here where the comedians didn't make me crack up. I always try to go to the later shows because the later the show the more vulgar and racist the shows become all in good fun of course. If you are the type to get easily offended then maybe comedy clubs aren't the thing for you. Simply put: I had a craving for some good stand-up and Comic Strip Live delivered. This is an excellent, cozy joint to bring a group of friends or a date. And if the people you are with don't like to laugh...well then ditch them and head over yourself. This is the sort of place one would be able to meet new people at. The staff was sweet (happy birthday to one of the waitresses!), the comics were down-to-earth and hilarious, and the staff was very accommodating. The intimate atmosphere of the club facilitates a solid rapport between the audience and the comic, bumping a 3.5-star experience to a 4-star one. The last comic literally spent his entire bit just having a back and forth with the group and was hands-down the most memorable. Yea, the drinks are pricey. That's just how it goes. Great restaurants in the area, too. Jaiya and Blockheads are my two favorites. bam. I just took all the work out of planning an awesome evening for you. now go have fun. read more

Came here with a group of four last Sunday. It was possibly the coldest day this winter in the City and it was still a packed house. Nothing prevents New Yorkers from going out and having a good time. We arrived late and were fearful to be seated right in the front, aka line of fire. We really wanted to watch a comedy show rather than have a conversation with a comedian. Thankfully there was a table for four nestled in the right corner of the stage. The views weren't obstructed and we still felt close and part of the action. In fact we were picked on once for being Canadian. Tickets were $15 a piece with a 2 drink minimum - drinks could include anything from alcoholic cocktails (~$14) to pop (~$7). There was a large line up of diverse comedians - females, males, gays and Asians, all bringing their own flavor of humour to the stage. The flare of the night seemed to revolve around how 'gay' is no longer a derogative term , rather a compliment. Lots of prepared material by the comedians with a healthy amount of audience harassment. The show was about 2 - 2.5 hours long, with an end segment of rapid fire rounds. I believe these were amateur comedians auditioning or trying out new material. It's worth the stay if you're not too restless from the previous lineup. Although we ended up at the Comic Strip Live because the Comedy Cellar was sold out, we'll definitely come back here the next time we're in New York! read more

I'm not a huge stand-up comedy fan. I've only been to 2, this being my 3rd, so I don't have too much experience. Comic Strip Live is a comedy club, not a comedy theater. So if you've been to The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, know that Comic Strip Live is completely different. There is a small stage and you sit at tables right up against the stage and around the main room. The room is not large at all. I would say it has an occupancy of around 60. There is a 2 drink minimum, which seems to be the norm in NYC. Ticket prices can vary, depending on what show you go to and whether or not you get a discount. Yelp sometimes has buy one get one free deals, which you just mention during your reservation. That makes it $7.50/person on a weekday night. Depending on when you go and how long you stay, you may be offered a complimentary ticket for a future visit. Overall, the comics were so so. There were a few that had me laughing, but some of them were just painful to watch/listen to. Comic Strip Live gets surprise guests occasionally, and we were treated to a surprise visit from Jay Pharaoh from SNL. He was hilarious. It actually made the whole night worth it! One perk is that even when you're int he restroom, you can hear the broadcast from the stage, so you aren't missing any part of the show even if you need to quietly duck into the restroom. An informal poll from my party of 10 people concluded that the drinks were overall too sweet and not alcoholic enough. The prices are also a bit steep, but again, that seems to not be uncommon for comedy clubs in NYC. I'll be back because I have a complimentary ticket. I'll give it one more shot. This was our second time coming to Support Ryan Brown. He was hosting which meant we got to see him throughout the two hour set. The comics were generally pretty funny. The service was good since the place was less crowded than the usual tryout shows. With the two drink minimum, I had a Long Island Ice Tea and a Makers Mark on the Rocks ($12 but $15 after tax).
