I've lived in HLP for over a decade now and kept putting off a visit to Comics VS Toys for one reason or another. When the urge to buy comics struck, I would default to the Pasadena stores - you know the ones - and man was that a mistake. I used to be an avid collector in the 90s, and Bali Books in Alhambra was my sanctuary. Every other store, no matter how good the selection, just felt impersonal. I recently decided to start reading issues in real time instead of waiting for TPBs, and of course that meant I needed a pull list. One stop at Comics VS Toys and dammit I feel like a 12 year old all over again. The owner, Ace, immediately took my requests and helped fill in some recent back issues I missed out on. Luckily my current list is staggered and I have a legitimate excuse to pick up my stack every week. And the staff is awesome, like your favorite neighborhood bar tenders. See ya next week! their selection wasn't right for me. that's ok, I'm hard to please. but they were straightforward and didn't waste my time.

This is a narrow little comic and collectibles shop right next to Acorn. It is fairly stuffed with comics, though there were considerably fewer toys. Though I did enjoy the t-shirts that they had on display. I am a comics fan and, if I had all day, I would be able to go through this entire place's inventory. But I found it wasn't organized in a way that I found easy to navigate. There were definitely some comic favorites of mine, or titles that I was interested in, but I came upon them randomly. And most weren't where I was expecting them. Interestingly enough, the comics were exclusively (or almost exclusively) Western comics. I didn't see any manga. There are, of course, shops entirely devoted to manga, but I've seen few comics shops that didn't have a few titles, given their popularity. The clerk on duty was neither outgoing nor unfriendly. Which, honestly, I'm fine with. When it comes to stores with lots of merchandise, as long as I can find someone to ask a question, I'm happy. I don't need someone breathing down my neck. While I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again, I might browse if I was in the area. read more

I haven't bought a comic book in decades, I'm a video game nerd, so I haven't really paid attention to comic books. Recently, Sony announced a free comic book on free comic book day to illustrate the story line between Spider-man video games. I was excited, but I didn't think it would be hard to get. Initially, I went to Legacy Comics in Glendale, but the Playstation comic book was sold out. I contacted Comic vs Toys in Eagle Rock, and they told me they had it in stock. I promised the owner, I would give him a 5 star review. The owner is Filipino American. I'm so grateful to him, and to those of you looking for this particular comic book, I believe he still has them in stock, so run, don't walk to Comic vs Toys. Since these places are usually out of my element, I tend to browse on my own, there wasn't allot of space to browse since this place is tiny but there selection is huge. I've noticed the shop for quite a few years. But because it's so small and nestled in between two businesses, it can become invisible. But today, I was looking for a place to buy some comics. And I asked Siri for some help. This popped up Comics & toys. And they were open!! I made my way to the shop. The owner was very gracious. Due to the COVID-19 he only allows three people inside the store. And it is a very small store. I noticed he had some long boxes on the floor I asked if I could scrimmage through them. He said yes. He even offered to stay a little over his closing time. Which was amazing. I found some great back issues. I can't really say enough about the owner, very accommodating. I truly recommend this place. If you're ever in Eagle rock, please make your way to this comic treasure trove. read more

Same verse, same as the first. This spot, for as long as I can recall, has had a comic shop on it. But like most comic shops in these tough economic times, the ownership changes hands more times than I can count. There was an old fashion comic shop here once. A meltdown mini store and so many more. At the very least the only thing that changes is who you give your money to, really. This latest reincarnation of the store has pretty solid customer service and stuff is easy to find. Those two factors, I hope, will keep this shop running for a while. It has a lot of things for the hardcore geek as well as not being too alienating for those who don't know Klingon as a second language. The friendly staff is the biggest selling point. If you can't find something you're looking for, they're typically on the case to track it down with some pretty good results. All in all, it's a solid comic shop that has a wide variety of things you're probably looking for and will hook you up and please you if you're on the more hardcore side of collecting. read more

Right here in the neighbourhood and man what a selection. That and the awesome Silver Surfer model they have in the middle of the store! The store isnt huge but they make the most of the space they have. When I pop in here, the guys are super friendly and have helped me pick out some things for my kid. Found my Tower of Babel paperback. Been looking for it forever. Awesome sauce. The place was filled with toys and wonder. There were also a good selection of comics for such a small store. The store had me revisiting my past and this place reminded me of a very small toys'r'us with more heart, cleanliness and class. My only disappointment was when I entered the store and I didn't see any comics fighting toys. Sigh.... Misleading much?!?!? read more

Places like this bring a smile to my face. :) What's better than and an Afternoon checking out Comics and Cool figures? ...No, really what is? Tell me, because I can't think of anything else that would be. I had this shop bookmarked for a little over a week now, not sure when I would be able to stop by and check it out and fortunately I was in the are yesterday. Upon walking in, I noticed the shop was pretty small, but as Master Yoda once said "Size Matters not" as this one of the coolest shops I've been to! I think there's just a little of every franchise here that one can look for from Disney Art Books, Star Wars/ Trek, Aliens, Godzilla, Transformers, Hot Wheels, Doctor Who to most importantly...the Comic Books new and back issues (whether it be Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Dynamite, etc). The one guy at the counter was really nice and help full. We were checking out some stuff behind the display case and offered to open it up just to check it out even if he knew we weren't able to purchase it. I was really impressed with this shop and already I can't wait to come back again! read more

I've been getting my comics here for a few years. The staff has been nothing but great every time. The shop is not huge, but its packed with enough merchandise to give you plenty of options. I don't really know what Col S. was talking about in his review stating that the store is in a "bad neighborhood". Ive never had any problems. In fact the neighborhood seems to be getting a bit uppity if you ask me. Also, yes the toy prices might be higher than a giant corporate store like target or toy r us, but it really doesn't take a genius to understand why. The prices are not offensively higher, but enough to make sure the store does not loose money. If you can't spend an extra buck or two supporting an independent business that brings you top of the line service with s smile and without an attitude, maybe you should stick to shopping at target. All in all this shop is great. Awesome employees sans the pretentious comic store nazi attitude. read more

Great store but really small, limited selection of comics. Very minimal selection of bronze age comics. I was however able to located 1st appearance of Gambit and was given a 10% discount (would've been more if I had cash). Friendly service and very good selection of toys. Should really be called Comic vs. Toys (without the "s"). Check it out if you are in the area. read more

This shop has some mind-blowing new, cool, and/or rare items I haven't seen or found anywhere else. It's definitely one of those holes in the wall where you'd find that one collectible you've been hunting for. It's not cheap here though, but maybe your investment will be worth it. The workers have been pretty cool with their useful comments, recommendations, and heads up on incoming stock. read more

I brought my little kids in here today with the hope of passing on the love of a good neighborhood comic store, and I wasn't disappointed. That's exactly what this place is. They manager/owner was great with my kids and didn't seem annoyed. He was informative about pricing and engagingly unpretentious. No comic book snobbery here. It was super friendly... they great selection and reasonable prices. Hot damn, the name pretty much sums it up, because when you walk into this store the question becomes, "where is my hard earned money going, comics or toys?" You certainly aren't leaving here without something. This was my first visit, as I don't make it around to Eagle Rock very often, but I must say I wish I lived closer. They have everything you could ask for, and if it's not there, they'll be happy to help you locate it. I wish I had the name of the guy working, but he was friendly, knowledgable and most importantly, not one of those holier-than-though comic geeks (i.e. "Simpsons" Comic Book Guy). After giving away my comic book collection to Goodwill (big mistake, don't ever do it) and a really bad falling out with Legacy Comics, I lost interest in comics for several years. I have always known of Comics vs. Toys but never gave it a chance until recently to see what Star Wars issues they had in stock. I've had nothing but good experiences ever since. Today I got to meet one of the co-owners and we had a friendly conversation for about 15 minutes ranging from new and older Batman/Superman graphic novels to Star Wars and Frank Miller's 300 prequel. He was extremely nice- which can be hard to find in comic book stores. I walked away with the new Darth Maul: Death Sentence issues #1 and #2 as well as Superman: Red Son, and will be coming back over the next several months for anything Darth Maul, All-Star Superman, Final Crisis, Dark Victory, and The Long Halloween. Being a comic book enthusiast is easy when you buy your books at a store you love to go to, and I'm glad I finally found one again. read more

I moved to an entirely different part of town and this is still where my pull list is located. They offer a discount for pull customers that is impressive (not all shops do that I've found). Friendly staff and impressive selection of collectibles even though the shop has limited space. Great place to get turned on to new comics, they've read everything worth reading. Small kid friendly section makes it worth visiting for all ages. Best shop in the area hands down. read more

this place is pretty cool and has lots of newly released comics as well as old ones in boxes that you can peruse through. they've also got action figures from DC Universe, Batman, and other cool collectibles displayed in glass cases. the store is pretty small, but there's tons of stuff to look at and you might just find something that'll catch your eye. while most of the figures/collectibles are priced a bit high in comparison to Frank & Sons, this spot is still worth a look...especially if you want a newly released comic or something unique if you're willing to pay the price. they also have some G1 transformer toys that are pretty pricey, but that's the price to pay for nostalgia and vintage toys. read more
