I was greeted as soon as I walked in and asked if I needed help or had questions. Only wish they had the AC on lol went in on a hot summer day. Nostalgic Comic Shop - Comic Books Near Me - San Gabriel, California

I came here for Free Comic Book Day. The first thing I noticed was it didn't feel very nostalgic for a nostalgic comic book store. They had some older comics in the front and center, but the walls were lined with new stuff, collections, memorabilia, and game figurines. It is a small store, which seems to have regulars. The prices are better, for the most part, compared to Comic Cellar, the other local comic book store. They had some comics as low as 50 cents, and some were priced for less than the retail price, even though they seemed quite old, and in good condition, as opposed to the other comic book store that seemed to overcharge for everything. Not everything is in a sleeve. All the new stuff seems uncovered. The store is smaller, and the selection is smaller. They seemed to have 20 copies of the same comics, and not too many rare comics, or older comics, or even the first of the series, if you are trying to start a new series. For the free comics, they allowed you to get as many as you wanted, as opposed to Comic Cellar which charged you for any after the first. However, the selection is different. They also had no line. They had two artists, who weren't very busy, and who you could chat with. I believe they drew you a picture if you purchased the comic with a blank cover. It was hard to tell who worked there, and who was just hanging out, because everyone seemed to know each other. Overall it seems like a great place to get a good price on a comic. read more

Whoa, this place is pretty awesome. And its tucked away on a little neighborhood street in San Gabriel. I walked in and was greeted by the guy at the register who was chilling and watching Guardians of the Galaxy. And dude, if I didn't have to go home, I would have plopped right down on the couch and watched with him. I watched a few people come in as I browsed. The clerk asked if I needed help, but I just wanted to peruse. I listened to the clerk answer questions, he seemed pretty knowledgeable and helpful. He also knew a couple of people who came in and appeared to be regulars. Seemed like a chill place. Small, but comfy. Lots of comics, some comics I have never even seen before. Some $1 comics. Been coming here on and off for years. Peter I believe? Is dope. Always greets everyone as they come in and is super cool to talk with. He also gives great recommendations. Growing up here there use to be alot of cool stores in the village. Than it all went away until....nostalgia comics came around! Nestled away on the quiet street of what is known as the San Gabriel Village lies this little gem. The shop itself is pretty inconspicuous, new releases and current DC/Marvel comics adorn the shelves alongside the more independent comic book publishers such as Image/Boom Studios/ etc... Long boxes of comics of yesteryear sit on top of Ikea like shelves where you can peruse through a plethora of comics from long ago if you're feeling nostalgic (hah! I made a funny!), while a selection of trades are in their own little section waiting for someone to pick them up. There is a wall dedicated to more valuable comics as well as a selection of toys, funko pops, and statues. The owner, Pete, is a pretty great dude. He's well-versed in the lore of comic books and it is quite obvious he enjoys his craft. Where other comic book stores feel exclusive to "comic book geeks," this store has always made other customers, as well as myself, feel included. The owner never pushes a sale and makes solid recommendations based on the preference of his customers or after some short responses from people that are looking for a book as a gift, or more neophyte members looking to get into comic books. When the "regulars" are there, you can easily witness the camaraderie that the shop owner has developed with his more frequent clients, but he never misses a meet to help a customer that walks in with his trademark "Do you need help with anything?" Been coming here for 3 years or so, so I might be a little biased. But just like any good store with excellent customer service that makes you feel welcomed, why would you want to go anywhere else? I was surprised when I found this store on fairview, there are currently major roadwork on mission and I spotted this comic store while navigating through the confusing detours one day. I recognize the owner here as one of the guys who used to work at another comic store in Monterey Park. I played heroclix at that other store a couple of times before the game died the first time. Apparently store is now defunct (?) and he decided to open shop at this place which is much closer to me. This quaint little store may not be gargantuan like some of the bigger stores around the Los Angeles area, but the owner here is very knowledgable, friendly and just kicks ass in general. They do run heroclix tourneys on Saturdays here and players are all easy going and very cool (unlike certain more cut throat venues). I highly recommend this place. 清倉令郎聽湯 read more

I don't know whether I just have ridiculously bad luck or what, but every time we've ever tried to find something in this store, especially of late, we've left both disappointed and put off by the horrible attitude of the staff. I honestly don't know what the other Yelpers here are experiencing, but it's certainly nothing like the unpleasantness I have. Twice in a row now, I've had to turn to ordering online for copies of a particular comic, because instead of receiving any vaguely decent stock, the staffer in question informs us that the only copies of said comic ordered are on reserve, and that reserves are only for his friends - no reserves for regular customers. Apparently reserves are different from pull-lists, and pull-lists don't mean they'll order any copies for anyone but their friends. I live less than a 3 minute walk away from here, but after this second encounter with rude staff, we won't bother coming back. Between unfriendly staff, awkward hours, and a lack of stock or willingness to place an order for a customer willing to buy, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with catering a little something extra to your friends if you own a shop, but why would you tell that to a customer's face when they're asking about getting a particular new release then inform them that you won't reserve it? I won't be back. This place has lost our business, period. I'll take my comic budget elsewhere. read more

Wow I love Nostalgic!! Even tho I didn't win the raffle during their grand opening.. :( The used books here are hella cheap! A used paperback Dean Koontz book went for $1!! They got some rare books and books that are just fun to have around like the used Quimby Mouse hardcover for only $8! The comic books here really complete the 'nostalgic' feel to the place because they got some old stuff along with the new. The staff is reeeeally friendly and knowledgeable, its hard not to get hooked into a convo! I LOVE LOVE this place and def coming back! read more

From the outside I thought it would be a great store. I don't mean to be so harsh on this but coming in, the owner was in the back with someone else and once I picked up a book was when he came and asked if we needed something. He didn't seem to enthusiastic to help either, as I was asking general comic questions. It felt like he was working there to make money and not the love of the comics. It was a really smaller store location from other places I've been too. Although I've used Yelp for some time now to find good restaurants, reliable businesses, etc...I've never felt compelled to write a review until now. This bookstore and what I found in it didn't just make my day, it made my month. I found several book sets that I have been wanting for a very long time and all at a tremendously good price. Add to the above that the owner and staff of the store are all extremely nice, helpful, and are knowledgeable of the genres they specialize in. Nice quiet store. The owner is pretty cool and the environment is pretty mellow. The back issue selection isn't very large and if you're looking for books to fill holes in your collection then you'll probably be disappointed. It seems like they do carry a larger selection of new books, but because the store is pretty small that too is limited. Pricing is hit or miss in the back issue bins. I asked for prices on a few books I selected and they searched the prices on eBay. read more

I LOVE this place. They carry pretty much everything my family needs (my other half George, and El Senor Picky) : Star Wars comics for them (all the current ones too!,) and hard to find Theodore Sturgeon books for me. Good prices had by all! The people who run this store are incredibly friendly and know their stuff. They even carry Mutt and Jeff comics (insert Simpsons joke here.) Not only were they friendly to me, but they were incredibily friendly to my slouchy teenager. Score 10,000 points! I am so glad there is a bookstore in Alhambra again. Okay - I've hit a lot of shops and seen a lot of different set ups. Unfortunately I visited the shop during the hottest day of the summer and this place has no A/C. it was dark and the shop was sloppy. So it was annoying digging through the long boxes while your dripping sweat, I'm sure this place has some hidden gems, but I don't know if I want to look for them in the stifling heat. Having been born and raised in San Gabriel, CA, I've always wanted excuses to visit my hometown. I recently got into comics after an on-again-off-again relationship with them as a child, and upon discovering Nostalgic, I was able to become nostalgic by both visiting San Gabriel and reading comics. My modest pull list of New Super-Man and Totally Awesome Hulk is satisfied here, except I had to pick up a trade paperback of Totally Awesome Hulk off Amazon because Nostalgic ran out of the first issue. I kept reading about awesome back issue selection, but it seems to have gone dry as I came by. The guy working there was chilling on the seat as I came in. I didn't mind because he acknowledge me coming in and asked if I needed any help. Unfortunately the store is a little small, but he was able to find me an issue that was becoming increasingly hard to find. It was slightly above cover, but other places were selling it for much more, so I got a great deal. Nostalgia seems like a place that's better for pull lists for people living in the area, and I would come here if it were closer by, but if you are searching for back issues, it seems that Nostalgia is slightly bare compared to others. Just visited this shop for the first time. I was looking for 3 Walking Dead back issues . I called my usual 4 shops that I frequent with little or no luck. I saw this place and it was a little outta my way but I called them up, dude answers , checks his stock and he has them all. I'm so psyched, I head over and pick them up, the street it's on is so cool, it's in this separate part of the city called San Gabriel village. The guy at the shop was really chill, super courteous and I didn't catch his name, but he had a rad beard. All in all a great experience , I only wish this was my local shop. I didn't ask if they had a reserve list but if they do I'm seriously thinking about making them my regular shop and wasting the extra gas to come here every Wednesday , totally worth it. read more

The owner seemed nice, they have some toys/collectibles (Heroclix, etc.) that I haven't seen at other shops, and the selection of new comics is fine. But I wasn't satisfied with the organization and general atmosphere in the store. I understand it's a small local shop and some people would probably call the atmosphere "laid-back" or "friendly", but it felt to me more like a pop-up comic store held in someone's house or garage than a regular place of business. It's pretty small, was too warm inside, the owner was chatting really casually with someone at the back counter, and things aren't well-labeled or organized as neatly as I would have liked. I would have preferred a more "professional"-looking store. I found the new issues I was looking for without trouble. There isn't an extensive selection of TPBs or hardcovers, or toys/collectibles other than the Heroclix (not organized, in a glass case) and a handful of Funko Pops. The owner greeted me when I went in, and asked if I needed any help, so that was nice. It's on a very quiet street without restaurants, other stores, etc so the area is a little weird but the parking out front was great. read more

The place is nice and cater to charity event every now and then. Friendly staff and the owner is awesome. The store have a variety of comic book collection to choose from. We held a toy drive last year and it was a success and the kids loved seeing us in cosplay. But more importantly, the toys collected was appreciated by the kids. I love coming to this comic shop. I recently discovered it after having moved to the area and wish I had found it earlier. Peter, the owner, is very cool and extremely helpful. He has a very good selection of new and back issues from all genres, figures, and other collectibles. His prices are also beyond reasonable. This shop itself is very comfortable and I never feel rushed or pressured. I highly recommend coming here for your comic needs. First time there, and definitely last time I shop there! I went to this location earlier today to buy some comic books. So, my brother and I get there and start browsing through their boxes, we were there for about half an hour and all we got from the staff was a "Hi". That didn't really bother me since I like to be left alone when I shop. By the end we had accumulated a nice stack of comic books. We asked for a few price checks, and it appears that they base their prices off of E-Bay, I don't know if this is a good thing, or a bad thing. The guy gave us our total, and we paid him and took off. Now here is were I was disappointed. In my stack was a "Tales to Astonish" #101. It was marked for $1.00, I didn't know if it was a mistake or not, but the guy said the prices were marked on the comics, so I wasn't gonna argue with that one. Well, While we were checking out, my brother and I kept looking at comics, maybe we would pick one up at the last minute, but when I got to my vehicle, all the comics were there, except for the "tales to Astonish". I'm pretty sure the guy noticed the comic and put it away behind our back. I clearly remember it was the on on top of the stack, I wish I would of seen him do it, that way I could have called him out on it. But I didn't, so I just got the few comics I bought and left, never to go back to that place again. Can't blame them, it's a business and they're in it to make money. I just can't believe he did that, after we had just spent $45 and were planning of becoming patrons of that place, but no thanks. read more

This place looks like it honestly belongs in a remnant of 'Old San Gabriel', where there used to be rollerskating rinks and drive in movie theaters. Although to my surprise it's actually new and barely opened up on Fairview. The pros and cons of this store is that it really is in the middle of nowhere. I actually found this store one night on a drunk adventure walking down the street with my friend. The benefit of this place being pretty much hidden is that you have access to a larger stock of untouched comic books compared to that of other stores in the area. read more

I found this place by accident but came to find out Peter who runs the shop is working there and I've known him from other comic shops I've picked up books from. He's great at running the store and you can ask him pretty much about anything going on in the comic industry and he knows it.
