We were a party of 5 and waited an hour to be seated. Once seated, we waited 30 minutes for someone to take our order. We tried to catch the wait staff's attention to order and they held up a finger and just said "wait, I'm busy". After ordering, it took another 45 mins to get the food. One of our party member order's ran out of stock and he had to reorder. The wait staff continually avoided eye contact and was just generally short and rude. It was a busy night, but I've been to many restaurants and never been treated that poorly. The food was good! But not worth the wait and poor service. I won't be back. read more

This was my second time trying this restaurant. Found this place while passing through back in June and it was delicious I decided since we were in the area hiking we had to go back. The first time I had the most amazing house salad so I knew what I wanted this time. Well what I thought I ordered was not what I got not sure if it was my fault or the kitchens fault. Needless to say I didn't say anything but I got a plan salad with just romaine lettuce, red onions and tomatoes with the really delicious blue cheese dressing but really wanted the salad on the menu. Sadly it cost the same price as the salad I was ordering but it was missing provel and the pepperoni not really sure why it was $9 since it was a basic salad. The fried mushrooms were so delicious. We were heading home from Evansville and picked Booneville. There were a few places on the square. I happened to find parking at Commanders so we picked them. What a great choice! We sat at the bar and I asked the bartender what he recommended. He said the cheesesteak and burgers. That's what we ordered. No regrets. Absolutely delicious. If you love good food and history, this place will not disappoint. What an awesome find while road tripping one evening! As far as good, the Indiana Tenderloin sandwich is a treat. A huge pork tenderloin on a nice hoagie bun and all the fixin's tasted wonderful. It practically melted in my mouth and was so flavorful. The blueberry cheesecake was one of the best cheesecakes I have ever tasted and is made from scratch from the owner's family friend. Service was great and staff was amazing. Saw a local coming in and the bartender motioned to them and began their drink if choice from memory. It reminded me of the Cheers theme song about a place where "everyone knows your name." The atmosphere was of people who seemed to be close friends and neighbors and treated us as new friends when we walked in. The namesake of the restaurant and uncle of the owner (and Boonsville native) is the late U.S. Navy Captain Ralph Weyerbacher, the father of the navy's rigid airships created and utilized shortly after WWI. He created them from memory after studying the German Zeppelin. He commanded the USS SHENANDOAH (ZR 1) which was the flagship for the prototypes made for the Navy. Although they were never really utilized in warfare, it was a forerunner of the modern-day Naval Aviation. Being retired Navy, this was a particularly memorable experience. It was enjoyable to see the pride this community takes in its native children. Ee thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and will definitely find a reason to make the trip back to Boonville to eat here again! A small hometown dinner that is right on the boonville square. The Commander Burger was amazing (5-5). It usually comes with chips but I upgraded to fries. That was a mistake. The fries were old/hard/slightly cold (0/5). My wife got a burger with the chips. The house chips were great (4/5) Our server was on top of it. The is one of our two favorite restaurants. Food is absolutely amazing. Everything is fresh and scratch made. Best fried mushrooms anywhere. Fresh, hand dipped and a very faint spice. They're so good we always start with them no matter how big of a meal we're ordering. Other favorite appetizers are fried pickles and the buffalo chicken meatballs. The breaded tenderloin sandwich is nearly an inch thick and still tender and juicy. It's big enough to feed two. Fried chicken is the best. Steaks and prime rib are done perfectly and delicious. The grilled pork chop is 2" thick and cooked perfectly. The salads are awesome with multiple hand grated cheeses, salami and their own house made dressing that is the best. The owners and staff are all so friendly and attentive, and Bill, the bartender is very good and entertaining. Very interesting, homey, relaxing decor. A lot of paintings and pictures of the Commander who was in charge of building and piloting the first US air ship. Bottom line: You can't go wrong with anything you order from the menu and enjoy the amazing food in a place where the owners and staff treat you like family. read more

Amazing fried chicken. Likely the best in Boonville after my wife's grandma's, of course. Apparently, they only make the fried chicken as you ordered it. Pleasingly crunchy outside and deliciously and juicy inside. Simply cooked just right. Interestingly, they used coarse sea salt for the fries. Everything is just super fresh and they don't mess around with the quality for the ingredients. Last time I had prime rib and I'm considering replacing Outback. For the fried chicken, I'm replacing TF2(but will still go for ice creams there). Next time will have to try other categories, I'm looking forward to return. read more

I want to start out by saying that I am a huge foodie, always have been.. as well as brutally honest. I am just now writing my first review ever after downloading the Yelp App. Commander's is a true hidden gem located downtown in Boonville, IN. I have heard about the place for a few months now and decided to visit with some family on a Saturday evening. They greet you when you come in and even the owner/head chef came out to walk around asking tables how everything was that evening. Make sure you check their open hours because they are a bit different. The menu is not loaded with a huge and overwhelming list of food options, it is instead very particular to items the owner enjoys making for people. (I think I read in an interview once.) At first read it seems to have the basic menu items of any smaller diner or restaurant. We ordered and the food came out promptly considering it was at half full capacity. Others ordered the catfish sandwich (a little generic in taste and visually), the Commander burger (a bit small portion of a beef patty that makes up for it with the potato roll bun and special Zeppelin sauce) as for me, I ordered the Pork Tenderloin sandwich. Let me be brutally honest.. I have had many tenderloin sandwiches in the past but this one was the best one my tastebuds have ever encountered. The thickness of it, the sheer size, the tenderness, the breading, the texture with the added pickles, all of it sandwiched between a kaiser roll. It was cooked to perfection and not your ordinary Franklin Street Fall Festival Texas Tenderloin. This sandwich put all other Tenderloin sandwiches to sorry shame. Accompany it with the mildly sweet and thick coleslaw and you had my heart. I will be returning to try other dishes very soon. Closing: If you want to sit down in a usually quiet and friendly, down home diner/restaurant atmosphere then this is your place. If you are looking for a large and diverse menu then you may want to try somewhere else. Tip: Go for the Tenderloin Sandwich! read more

My husband and I had heard many good things about the Commander's Grill and thought we would give it a try tonight for an early Dinner. BIG MISTAKE!!! We were greeted by the most unfriendly host I think I have ever met. He explained that it may be awhile because there was only one waitress and she had several tables ( I counted 6, including us, 2 of which already had their food), but OK I understand that if everyone came in at the same time it may take awhile to get through them. We were brought our ice teas within fairly quickly but things went down from there. Multitasking is obviously not in the waitresses vocabulary as she seemed to be able to only manage one table at a time. She had finally gotten to the table that was seated before us and we figured OK we're next...but no, she decides to stand and visit and chat with the other customers rather than finish waiting tables. Maybe it was because we obviously weren't regulars but rest assured with that type of service we will definitely not become regulars. We left the money on the table for the teas and left. read more
