To the "lie detecting "commentor accusing Rei of racism because she allegedly only allows black people inside with dogs. First of all I know that I am the ONE black person you have seen regularly bringing his dogs into the store. For the record, I'm going to say something that is none of your business, but for the sake of checking you because you don't know what you're talking about I'm gonna let you know that I have already had conversations with both of them when I first moved into the neighborhood because I too was denied my dogs as well because most dog owners don't control their dogs in their store. Let's be very clear, as business owners it is their prerogative whether or not to let any, dog besides service dogs of course, into the store. What I did was have a conversation with each of them and let them know that I myself am literally a professional dog trainer and on my own dog training business, and reassured that at no time in their store or out side of it will my dogs be out of control, use the bathroom inside the store and I've always picked up anything left outside. And I reassured them that I can handle my dogs, sadly many people can't do the same and choose to blame the store for their own ENTITLED lack of being able to hear the word "no." There's also the fact that both of my dogs are certified service dogs, again none of your business but for the sake of defending a small business, you clearly need to do your homework ( Or better yet mind your own business). No not "emotional support "dogs, but actual acting trained service dogs. The fact that you have an issue with the color of my skin as I walk in with my trained and obedient dogs, speaks VOLUMES about who you are as a person. Because again, I feel with you there is a need to REEAAALLYY reiterate I myself train service dogs for a living so they are OK with them coming into the store because at all times I am in control of them. If you would like help being able to say the same thing hit me up I would be glad to train your dog so maybe you could get it under control and they would be more than glad to allow you to bring it into the store like they are with me, a person who controls the dogs. I hope you can see the common theme of THIS review VS the theme of YOURS which was LITERALLY you just crying entitled crocodile tears and talking about race (black, white, Korean) When this is an issue about dog behavior or in your case the lack there of. Lay off the small business owners who are simply trying to keep chaos out of their store. Again I myself would be more than glad to offer my services for free if you need help handling your dog so the owners and employees would be OK with letting you bring him or her in to any establishment with faith that a mess won't be made in or outside the store and you will be a responsible Dog owner and clean up any mess made outside of course. This has nothing to do with me being black and coming into the store with dogs. This is because my dogs are controlled and you don't like the word no. I would also be more than happy to have a peaceful (I reiterate peaceful) "in person" conversation next time you see me walk in with my dogs. Commodore grocery is a charming neighborhood store that I gladly regularly provide patronage and they have always Done their best to provide a clean and accommodating store for people of all walks of life. I love this corner store! The couple who owns it are incredibly sweet and they make my day when I stop in for a snack or a beer

This small convenience store is in the same building as Gilda's Restaurant. So convenient for me to run across to pick up a couple of items to add to my lunch and get a couple of staples for dinner. I evidently bought enough that they allowed me to use my debit card (there were several comments about having to use cash versus not being able to use debit cards here. There's probably a minimum purchase required to use debit cards as there are in so many of these these neighborhood stores scattered all over Portland neighborhoods). From the outside, it uses the same colors and paint scheme as Gilda's Restaurant. This does set one up with expectations for something a little more upscale. Unfortunately, this is not the case. It's a very small space with products stacked all over. They have some good choices, like small bricks of Tillamook Cheddar, and some just plain everyday choices like potato chips. There are a smattering of other products (beer and wine, housecleaning products, etc). It's fairly clean and only faintly dusty and even a bit disorganized. Under any other circumstance, I would have given it two stars, but the gentlemen cashier was so dignified and friendly that I awarded three stars. I just couldn't do anything else because I like to try to support small businesses like this, but I wish this one would work a little harder in order to help the community help them. read more

I love this place!! I live close by and I get my milk and eggs here when I don't feel like doing a whole shopping trip. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. I've even been asked what kind of soup I was looking for one day and they said they would stock it! I'm so happy to have this as my neighborhood store; it makes it really feel like a part of a community. read more

The Commodore Grocery is a tiny little shop in an area where every other block has a tiny little shop. The place is not particularly clean, it's very crowded, and the prices are convenience-store steep. The last time I went in, I was buying a bottle of pop and didn't have any cash. They wouldn't take my debit card because I wasn't buying enough. I guess I can sort of understand, what with the fees and all, but come on... who doesn't take cards anymore? The owner works sometimes, and I've never had any good experiences with her. She's short-tempered and always seems too busy. Which would make sense if she was cleaning the place up or something. A few years ago, I would put up with the place because it was the closest place to my apartment. Now that some new places have opened up, at least two other convenience stores within three blocks, not to mention a Fred Meyer about five blocks away... I don't see much point in returning. Which is a shame, because I always like to see small locally-owned businesses succeed. read more

Great owners who get to know you, remember what you like, and always have it in stock. A small bodega with a little bit of everything. I always love when they give you a banana for free! I know it's not much, but it makes you smile since no one gives anything for free these days. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because you have to check the expiration date on some foods. Fair selection of items, odd though not all items are price marked. Have to find out when you get to the register. Hmm.. Not a real understanding of items sold either. For instance "Do you carry Jolly Rancher candy?" Smile, I don't know..Understand there are many items in the store, but a "I don't really know" with a smile only goes so far when it's your store and your inventory, and you deliver the same line often regarding simple stock questions. After all they're buying it in the first place right? Pre fab fridge sandwiches get marked down without buyer beware..They simply place one price tag over the other.. Fine if you want to take a chance, but only fair to disclose expiration date. Don't believe you'll find an expiration date on any such "deli" items, will gladly edit review if so. Additionally, as with many other c. stores in the area you may rest assured that your malt liquor purchace will go off without a hitch. Community concern does not seem to be an issue, would advovate for this buisness to engage in neighborhood association activism if competent, and truely neighborhood minded. read more
