Sweet Bitter cocktail with tequila, grapefruit, egg whites and Amaro. YUMMY
    Lori W.

What treat! This amenity was part of our hotel package around the corner from The Townsman Hotel. We decided to check it out before heading to dinner. Exceptionally nice and pleasant people and bartenders! This cocktail was called "Sweet Bitter". It had tequila,Montenegro Amaro, Grapefruit, Lime and (my favorite as of late) Egg White. $11. Fiance had a Ketel One up with olives (imported, very nice touch). Tax & gratuity already built in. Delicious drink. Atmosphere: like we were in one of our friends homes that hit the Lotto. Couches very comfy. We steered away from one black chair because the cushion was so deep and compressed, there is no way you would be able to lift yourself. Nice fire going too. Cool spot; really enjoyed coming here.

Several days ago I had drinks at Common House. The location is unique and the vibe is casual yet upscale. Definitely a great place for working professionals looking to unwind in the afternoons or hang out in the evenings.

    Caccio e pepe (tiny portion)

***Food/Dining specific review*** I have already reviewed CH itself, and have no changes regarding the overall club, ambiance, aesthetics, etc. (all great) so this review will focus entirely upon the food and dining experiences I have had. Service: Five stars for service. All servers, bartenders, managers, front desk staff, etc. are always polite, attentive, and generally wonderful (Marisa - you were a delight, thank you!). We appreciate what you do. Food: Ooffffff...where to begin? Let's begin with one star, shall we? Let me tell you the many reasons why. First, keep in mind that this is a social club - gather with friends or colleagues and have a relaxing, fairly casual meal. One would think there would be items that could be shared, but not a cheeseboard, charcuterie plate, snack item in sight (heck, nachos even, come on, something). Instead, diners are left with overly fancy, overthought dishes that aim to impress but fall incredibly flat. The $16 fried oyster appetizer appeared with three (!) measly, small oysters. Not much to share there, much less enjoy by oneself. Of the three burgers that were ordered at one meal, not a single one was cooked as ordered (and all were quite small, with dry, too-firm meat). Each was overcooked. Fries? Hey you could actually sort of share those...if they were cooked well. Instead, the fries were likely once-cooked, limp, and mushy (three orders all like this). Ok fine, let's try something else. Caccio e pepe! Overall, this was the best(ish) thing ordered. But, sadly, there's a catch. Served with black truffle for added fanciness of course, one could not taste any of the bland (stale?) truffle. The pasta was nicely al dente, however, and the creamy sauce fairly tasty. The kicker though was that, for $21 (their website says $21, so I'll go with that, but I believe it was $22 in person) you are served a laughably child's size portion. Pasta is cheap, no need to skimp. Overall, diners can quickly realize the kitchen is trying to make dishes feel as fancy and impressive as possible, but obviously cutting every corner possible to save money. With member dues coming in and a new club location opening, you wouldn't think CH would take this tack. Members do not pay any discounted rates for drinks or food (not even close), so one would think that the kitchen would do their best to provide...the best. Unfortunately, this is nowhere near the case. If you're looking for a quality meal downtown, pick literally anywhere else. You'll get more for your money, in taste, quality, and quantity. Please CH, just present diners with simple, quality dishes, in normal adult-sized portions. If you're looking for money-makers...shared plates! There are so many good options for "snack" dishes that would easily up the ticket amounts each time members visit to have cocktails. Think of all of the options for snacks to be shared on the rooftop this summer.

My Wahoo daughter brought me here during Family Weekend, and now I totally get why this place is a UVA favorite. The building itself is part of a beautifully restored historic industrial complex off Preston Avenue. It's an adaptive-reuse space (formerly part of the old Coca-Cola bottling works), and the design keeps that industrial character alive: tall ceilings, exposed materials, and a layout that feels open, social, and easygoing. The outdoor area is especially smartly done. They've got roll-down fabric walls and overhead heat lamps that keep the patio comfortable even when the temperature dips. It's basically an all-weather beer-garden vibe, and it works. Here's how our meal went down: * Shared starter: the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel. Warm, soft, perfectly salted, and killer with both the mustard and the cheese sauce. * My entrée: the Local Steak Salad -- gorgeous presentation, tender grass-fed beef, and those pickled turnips, radish slices, and greens in herb buttermilk dressing absolutely tied it together. * My daughter's entrée: Bratwurst, which disappeared quickly, so that tells you what you need to know. Service setup is counter-service for food with table drop-off, and drinks are ordered directly at the bar. It's efficient, friendly, and gives the whole place an easygoing "European beer hall meets Charlottesville neighborhood spot" feel. Kardinal Hall is one of those places where good food, good architecture, and good energy all line up. If you're in town -- especially visiting UVA -- this is a must-stop.

The number of guests was about 75 and I think there's still ample room for 100. While I don't know what the venue provides, i.e. staff, equipment, etc, the Old Metropolitan Hall is a nice venue to hold your special event. Once the ceremony was done, we were ushered downstairs for drinks and hors d'oeuvres while the main floor was prepared for the reception dinner. The downstairs had a bar, dance floor, seating on the perimeter of the room and behind a door labeled Employees Only, were two rooms decorated as a library/sitting room. I believe the happy bride and groom used those sections as their staging area/dressing rooms. The whole downstairs area had a speakeasy vibe. Once the main floor was readied for dinner. There was a table listing the seating arrangements and there were several rectangular tables set up for eight. Everything seemed to flow well and the staff was very nice and were accommodating. I had a great experience and believe the bride and groom were also very happy with the outcome.

I had hoped that it would offer a high class experience, but it was just okay. The room had some minor aesthetic touches, but in substance was pretty standard. The entrance to the hotel felt a bit cramped, and the building seemed centered around the restaurant that didn't have much for me. The sheets caused some skin irritation, and I wish all hotels used the most hypoallergenic detergent available. From a service perspective, it was quite good. I was offered an early checkin and also took a late checkout, so I got a ton of time with the room. They also stored my luggage, including various baked goods, after I was done. So I got a lot of value out of the room. The question to me was how this hotel would compare to the others that are in downtown Charlottesville; would the experience be worth a bit more than the more standard Marriotts or various others. I was not convinced that it would be worth spending the extra money on.
