Brief Line Up Front: As close as you can get to southern BBQ in New England. Pulled pork, pork belly, and collard greens are great. Wife and I drove up from RI to go outlet shopping and saw this place on yelp. Based on number of reviews and high score we went and I am glad we did. I am a glutton when it comes to BBQ and so far BBQ in New England is hit or miss. I ordered the Jalapeño Sausage popper apps, the Bourbon Pork Belly, Southern Style Burrito with Brisket, and the wife had the Pulled Pork sandwich. With drinks the bill came out to $40, which isn't bad for New England BBQ. I've paid more for significantly worse BBQ elsewhere north of the Mason Dixon line. The Jalapeño Sausage poppers are awesome. Think great smoked sausage with jalapeño wrapped in a nice cheese, then deep fried. Add a little of the spicy BBQ sauce they make here and it hits just right in the belly. The bourbon pork belly lives up to its name. It is definitely done with bourbon and maple syrup and you can taste the reach smoked flavor. In the south you do NOT serve Pork Belly alone unless you are sure you do it well. It can be very chewy and unkind, but the one here is awesome. It is served on a "Southern Fried Rice", which is ok, its light taste definitely goes well with the pork. I would not eat it alone. The wife's huge Pulled Pork Sandwich was definitely the portions I'm used to down South. The pork had really really really rich smoke flavor, stood on its own without sauce. Wife added sauce because she likes the kick of the spicy mixed with a little sweet and could not finish it and the sweet potato fries. I highly recommend this sandwich. The Burrito was served well but the Brisket was thin and tasted a little tough. In all honesty its not bad but not the best I have ever had. Next time I will go with a different meat if I am in the area. Everhing was great and I am glad to find decent BBQ in New England. Figured I would try this place since it is right down the street. The menu is typical array of barbecue items and chili as well as other assorted favorites. Ordered a few different items and was a bit shocked at how tasteless the food was and how the sauce they use with their smoking technique amounts to nothing but a smoke taste. The pulled pork was not tender and the beef brisket was tough like jerky. The mac and cheese was okay but the chili was mushy and nasty and the cowboy beans were a soupy mess. Plus on top of the disastrous meal, the price was over the top for the amount of food you get. I was appalled at how poor the food was from this place since it looks like they do draw in the people but it could be spill over from the nearby outlets not knowing any better. I think Ill skip this place next time and smoke my own at home. read more

If you read my other reviews, you understand that I am passionate about barbecue. I was surprised to see this place and decided to pull over and try bbq in Massachusetts. I ordered a 1/2 pound of brisket and a sausage link. Brisket 1- tough 2- tasteless 3- slight smoke flavor 4- failed the pull test 5- tastes more like jerky than brisket 6- weak smoke ring I was highly disappointed and saddened to see a cow killed for no reason. I highly doubt that this place is even using choice, maybe they are using commercial grade Brisket. They should invest into some prime grade and learn how to smoke meat. I am surprised that people pay for this food. They have a rewards program but I feel bad for those in the program. They must not know what even mediocre BBQ tastes like. You are better off putting a brisket in the oven and making it at home. It will taste better than commonwealth bbq. Sausage Commercial sausage smoked and quartered. Nothing original or great. For a commercial sausage it is overly priced at $4.95. The sausage is not worth more than $3.75 I appreciate every restaurant that intends on doing their best but I failed to see that here. The employees did not have their hair in hair nets nor was their hair pulled back. They wiped their gloves on their shirts. The same shirts that they were sweating in. So you are eating their sweat with the food. The food service was slow but adequate for the order food quantity being served. It would have been faster if they were more organized. The owners need to put the staff into shape and standardize their cooking techniques. As you can see on yelp they have wildly different ratings. They are not consistent and they are failing their customers by failing to follow practical food handling techniques. Invest in some hairnets and beard nets. I tried the cranberry habanero bbq sauce and the house sauce. Both were disappointing. Cranberry sauce was at most mild and not spicy as promised. The house sauce was syrupy and didn't have much flavor. read more

Ordered from here for the first time this past weekend. Being from the South and very accustomed to amazing BBQ on every corner, we weren't sure what to expect. We got the sampler, pork belly appetizer and a burger for our son. The sides were meh. I wouldn't go back to them for any of the sides except the beans. Mac & Cheese wasn't creamy, coleslaw wasn't flavorful, corn and fries were average. What they do phenomenally well; however, is pulled pork, ribs and pork belly. I would go back over and over just for those 3 items. The burger was pretty good but they didn't offer any fixins to go on it (lettuce, tomato, etc). I wasn't a huge fan of the chicken or the sausage either. The brisket was half and half. I had some really awesome moist pieces and some really not awesome dry pieces. All and all it was good food. They at least do the BBQ part of it right. I would definitely come back and live on the items they do well. read more

Came here after visiting the new go kart place near the area. PSA, the seating here is outdoor only (didn't know that before coming here). The place felt very authentic, there was quite a few people pulling in to eat after we ordered so it got a bit busy while we were waiting for our food. I got even more excited cause I love a good BBQ and when people show up, it means the food is good. We got the combo deal + ribs and I added an extra order of pork belly over rice. Overall the food was okay, nothing extraordinary. If I am in the area and want some BBQ, I would stop by but wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Also, if you check in on Yelp, they have a free soda offer. When I tried to redeem it, the person seemed annoyed that I even asked if I can redeem it. I've been to Commonwealth a few times in the past and enjoyed my meal. I went again 2 wks ago and was very disappointed. The place seemed dirty, shabby, and not up to snuff. The tables and ordering counter were dirty and sticky. Every surface was covered in a greasy grime. The sauce pumps and squeeze bottle hadn't been washed in quite some time. I've cooked in restaurants, so I found this very unappetizing. The signage is sloppy, the man who took the order was distinctly unfriendly. His clothes and apron were stained and dirty. Doesn't bode well for food safety. And the food was nothing special this time, quite average and lackluster, except for the very good cornbread. gross. I went there with my family friday. I'll start with the service. I've never been here before, new to town. I got a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and a side of mac and cheese. The next person in line orders and the worker says BBQ sauce on youres?" I never got asked that. rest of my family gets a wrap, chicken and fries. My pulled pork sandwich has no sauce. I kept watching and in the window they microwave EVERYTHING. Absolutely so gross. I couldn't eat the sandwich. Also no cole slaw came on mine. Moving onto the mac. It was awful. Tasted like a kraft but chemically. The wings said they were slow cooked for 3 days... they were dry. Meat like that should be falling off the bone. The normal fries tasted like sweet potato fries. I ordered a thing of sweet potato fries to try those were good. Let's talk about there sauce. The wrap was dissapoiting, chipotle's was better. Everything tasted extremely vingeary, even the ketchup. the blue cheese was gross. The fried pickles were so salty it was giving my a tounge rash. Would NEVER go there again. Hands down the best BBQ I have ever had...ever. Mind you I have had bbq everywhere on the planet but recently my taste buds have been thwarted by all of the wanna be BBQ joints in the city. Commonwealth is insanely delicious. The place looks like it used to be an old gas station or a drive up. There is only out door seating a la picnic tables. We had ribs, brisket, pulled pork, beans and rice, collard greens, coleslaw, sweet potato fries, jalapeño poppers and cornbread. All meat entrees come with cornbread and two sides. Everything, everything was NOT over salted, over seasoned, over smoked... The St Louis style ribs were charred and caramelized on the outside and tender inside. To say the meat fell was fall off the bone is an understatement. The outer crust was complex. The rub / sauce / chew smoke were all part of this heavenly crust. The brisket was moist, not too fatty. The texture was sliceable. I love the fact that it tasted like meat. You could actually taste the brisket flavor of the beef. The pulled pork...Aaaargh! I am a pulled pork snob. And, for the most part when you get it, it's more pork shrapnel than pulled pork. Again the pitmasters are geniuses. You can taste the smoke, the seasoning is balanced, but what comes through is a satisfying and rich pork shoulder flavor. The cornbread was moist and not too sweet. A perfectly shareable portion. No fangled butters needed. It can stand alone as good food should be able to do. Collard greens were remarkable in their simple goodness. I drank the potlikker. I saw some guy spilling his out. Blasphemy! Sweet potatoes were hand cut and fried well and sprinkled with salt. Coleslaw was perfect. Fresh. No mayo but flavorful. Not too sweet. It was like the cabbage had dressing but it was invisible?! The jalapeño poppers were probably one the best things I've had in my life. They were jalapeños stuffed with spicy chorizo sausage, creamy cheeses, dipped in something battery, then deep fried into an oblong shaped crunchy, tender little bit spicy popper. The popper is more appetizer size unto itself. It comes with a creamy cilantro sauce but I didn't find it necessary. They have a bar of BBQ sauces and vinegar. My fave was the habanero BBQ. It was slightly smokey from the habanero and a touch sweet The guys who work the joint are brusque but kind. Commonwealth is not to be missed. read more

Really solid bbq for this northern neck of the woods. And an especially nice treat given the scarcity of recent food options in the vicinity. We shared a couple jalapeño poppers and the triple platter. Our meats were pulled pork, brisket, and sausage. Pulled pork is generally my favorite, and was here as well. The more vinegar based sauce was perfect with the pulled pork. The mustard based sauce was best with the sausage. Each of the meats stood by themselves without sauce, good smoke ring on the brisket. Everything was juicy. The sides were great. Coleslaw was not too mayo laden, and the smoked corn was interesting. The sweet potato fries were excellent. A great northern bbq joint, dare I say one of the best I've been to north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Good enough bbq and smoker basics for me to give the other menu items a try in our next visit! Have been a few times before. Easy to get in and out of, very convenient. Have the standard BBQ offerings. My experience is usually that the food is OK and not great and this no different. Except for the female staffer screaming obscenities and storming out while we waited for the food. Which happens to be my biggest problem with ecery visit - the slow service. Oue order was 2 combos to go. One side and no dessert or drinks. It took between 20 and 25 minutes to fill the order and i think there were only 3-4 people ahead of us. They handed me the to-go bag and I didnt see a side order container. Directly asked the kid if the side was in one of the main containers. He hesitated and said yes. I asked if i should double chexk, he said no it was in there. not the worst BBQ I've had, but definitely not the best of New England, let alone anywhere else. don't claim to be a connoisseur of any kind, plus when one factors in regional differences and personal preference of a type of cooking method or "cuisine", it's just hard to compare, local or otherwise. so i'm just gonna lay it out like any other review: food and service. was actually excited to try out the sampler: gave us a few kinds of featured meat and couple sides. ordered the pork belly app on the side, plus a free soda from yelp check-in, came to $50ish. was a little surprised when told about the soda with words like "just grab it when you pull up at our window". things became clear when we pulled up literally 20 feet away from the actual "window" - oh, not the sit-in restaurant type i was expecting. not a big deal. the exact location of the place is actually at a weird angle at a traffic light T-ish interaction, but getting in and out wasn't too stressful. heard that there's a bathroom "in the back" that requires a key to enter; never been but wasn't expecting more than gas station standard. now, onto food. disclaimer: got take-out so things were, in fact, like the other reviewers stated, wrapped up in foil. i would have thought it's rather more thoughtful than dumping all sorts of food in the same container and letting them mingle and tangle with each other. and this foil comes especially handy shall one need to reheat the food in an oven. didn't realize that's making the food get dry. but i would give a star for effort. unfortunately, even when eating an hour or so after pickup (ie. relatively "fresh"), food were generally on the dry side, even though they seem to get the flavor and the smokiness. ribs were adequately tender but not fall-off-the-bone mushy. brisket is usually what everyone would fight over, but sadly, not in this case. it was bordering of cardboard texture due to the thin slices that are lacking of moistness, instead of the tender meat doused in fatty au jus as reasonably expected of this cut. didn't get to try the sausage. chicken was drier than preferred. pork belly app (not part of sampler) was actually the highlight of it all; recommended for trying. overall, BBQ sauce was not needed to add flavor to the food (trust me, i've had "BBQ" that desperately needed it), but rather to add moisture to the food. took 3 or 4 out of the 5 available sauces they had sitting out in huge pump jars, only chosen by name without tasting each. aside from a slight hint of a varying element (ex. mustard, spicy), they all kinda taste the same. as another reviewer had stated, a bit strong on the vinegar base. but it was a not-bad addition to the dry-ish food. sides were a bit of a fog: baked beans do look like the chili, collard greens (think that's what i chose?) was...there. corn on cob looked decent, though i didn't try it. nor did i eat the corn bread the first day, but it looked reasonably moist and intact. an abundance of French fries and sweet potato fries came with the meal, they were probably more on expected level than featured meats. ok with BBQ sauce too, esp if you are used to dipping it in malt vinegar like the Brits. Lol impression of the place: does give off an impression that it's run by a bunch of teenagers who may or may not have as invested an interest as owner; did not appear that owner was present when i was there. staff was courteous and stuff, but could improve on service. first time i called, at about 4pm on a weekday, no one picked up after 5+ rings. i doubled check that they were open, and called again, this time phone was picked up quickly and my order was put in with no error. guy at window seemed to be a bit preoccupied, but he got my order and charged me correctly. last note: surprised to find on their online menu -- it was printed in the intro -- that the owner is willing to back his products with a 100% guarantee. says something along the lines of "send it back if you're not satisfied, no questions asked". not sure if they're gonna provide a refund or trade another product...that's for some to find out and let us all know! for me, it wasn't bad enough to go through the hassle of sending it back. but i won't be in a rush to return either. though i do appreciate them posting at their window a list with a number of gluten-free items for patrons' reference. just that with an operation run as "care free-ly" as this appears to be, i would advise those with serious allergy issues to triple check or simply stay away so they don't get sick from accidental cross-contamination. read more

I was so excited that I was finally able to try this wonderful BBQ joint! I got a pulled pork sandwich and it did not disappoint! I also tried the stuffed jalapeno and it was delicious! Really loved the BBQ here, and am super happy to have found Commonwealth! Ordered the 1 meat platter + beef spare ribs, getting the pulled pork as my meat and the potato salad and the rice as the side. The beef spare ribs were amazing and next time I will get the full rack to bring home to the family -- they were cooked to perfection, with the all the right seasonings. The pulled pork was proper pulled pork, and you absolutely must put sauce on it to enjoy it fully, otherwise you don't get the depth of the flavor without the vinegar to open up the meat & seasonings. The potato salad was good, they have a special flair added to it which I will not spoil in my review. The rice was ok, my uncle enjoyed it and I thought it was fine. The cornbread was fine as well, a little dry for my tastes, but offset the meal in a complementary way. Staff was nice, docked one star because the BBQ sauce wasn't ready and took us 20 minutes to be able to get the sauce to eat. Weather is perfect for eating outside, but eater beware there are insects and critters around. Overall, a wonderful experience at very reasonable prices, comparable to Texas or North Carolina pricing for the same meal. So happy this place exists in MA! read more
