Good food, the 2 meat platter is a lot of food so we could probably split it. As it stands we will enjoy it leftover tomorrow as well. I have had a lot of really good BBQ including in Texas, so I am giving 3 stars - its good.

Today started as a "bro day" with my close friend (let's call him) AJ who graciously took a day off from his job selling robots to join me a on an unapologetic jaunt through the great city of Wrentham. Our primary objective was to race karts at the supercharged race track which we heard was the largest in the country. However much to our dismay, the track opened at 1pm and we arrived at 11am prompting us to seek sustenance elsewhere. A quick google search revealed commonwealth BBQ as a well reviewed lunch spot nearby so we drove over after a brief discussion about gorging on slowly cooked meat at 11am on a week day. Shortly after arrival we met Jesus in the form of a golden retriever in the sidecar of a motorcycle. He was goggled up and cute as a button. After being politely discouraged from sharing a single meal we decided to go hard and order more than was socially acceptable by any self-respecting human with self control or dignity. We proceeded to tear through 7.5lbs of meat, starch, and corn with reckless abandon... AJ, a semi professional speed eater tore through the chicken buffalo sandy in 30 seconds flat before taking down a pound of fries and half a stack of ribs. I kept up and together we polished off all our meat before the clock struck noon. It was absolutely delicious. I would eat it again right now if my poor, tormented colon could handle another protein load of astronomic proportion. We then proceeded to drive go karts in circles for an hour and nearly returned our digested meat to the outside world. And the outside world would be grateful. It was that good. Would give 6 stars if they served beer.

Great quality BBQ !!! Our family has been going to this BBQ spot since it opened. As a transplant from the Western USA, I was thrilled to have down to earth old school BBQ locally. The owner could not be more welcoming. Regardless how hot or busy, he is cheerful, polite, and professional The food is unique and reflects the years of award winning work by the owner in BBQ. They provide a number of different BBQ sauces via self serve dispensers. Remember to grab a few to sample ! One will certainly meet you needs. My son's favorite is the stuffed jalapeño peppers and Mason Dixon sandwich. My wife also loves the Mason Dixon. I usually get the burrito and a large side of Cowboy beans. They also cater. So consider them when you need some platters of great BBQ. The restaurant in a legacy walk up restaurant. As a result the bathroom is small by modern standards. The smokers are out back. The owner makes a good effort to maintain this vintage property. The picnic tables are all around and numerous. Covered tales are present by the ordering windows. Uncovered picnic tables are present in grassy areas on both sides of the restaurant. My son loves this restaurant so much that when we drive out of state to visit him in college, take out is in the car. This is quality BBQ from an owner who works hard and cares !

You drive up and it really looks like a Deep South BBQ place. It was rainy so I had to eat in my car. The 3 platter came nicely packaged so that it didn't spill everywhere. Before I make my 1/2 trek home I had to taste the cucumber salad- yummy a little sweet with a vinaigrette taste. Also the Mac and cheese - yes perfectly cheesy and the cole slaw - good and fresh but it could use a little more mayo. When I got home I dug into the meat. It was ok. I didn't know that there was not going to be BBQ sauce so the meat was a little dry... however u did get the smoky flavor. All in all this was a good try but I would wait till the summer so u can enjoy it right there. But give it a try if you are a BBQ lover.

My friend who lives not too far away from here recommended this place for BBQ and since we were visiting, we had to try the BBQ here in New England! We drove in to get dinner before the movies on Saturday night. And for dinner at 7 pm, there were a couple of people (two parties) ahead of us ordering and waiting for their food. Our party of 4 decided to order the Wampum Sampler and also the Pork Belly (which is drenched in this lovely bourbon syrup over black beans and rice). Although the Wampum Sampler says that it's for (two or more), I would argue that it's definitely for it's for at least three, if not four or more. The Wampum comes with a variety of different meats (ribs, chicken thighs, sausage, pulled pork, and brisket) and a variety of sides (coleslaw, both regular fries and sweet potato fries, your choice of collard greens and something else, baked beans, and two servings of cornbread). The fries are pretty good and crispy! The Wampum Sampler was really good and an ample amount of food. The ribs are fall of the bone tender and everything was seasoned so well. The sides are also quite tasty. The four of us finished MAYBE 60% of the food if I'm being generous. I would definitely recommend sharing with a larger party if you're going to order it. The pork belly was also pretty tasty--really sweet so if you're more into savory foods. The black beans and rice are a nice addition but kinda take away from the sweetness of the overall dish a little bit. Overall, would definitely recommend and come back. This place has really good BBQ, and not just by New England's standards. I will say though that if you're planning on dining at this location, that there are only outdoor picnic benches available so maybe consider taking it to-go if it's cold/bad weather out.

Does this place use a flat grill to cook their hot sandwich meats?

No Omar, we're a BBQ restaurant, all of our meats are smoked.

    Are they permanently closed?

Hi Isabella, we're open six days a week(closed Mondays) and have been so, uninterrupted for the last 10 years. Feel free to stop by.

Yes, it really is gator, and they are bite sized! (Tenderloin in the description had me thinking they were larger) Now, since I've not had gator before, I really have nothing to compare to. Still, the dish seemed to be cooked quite nicely. The breading added a nice crunch, but these being slightly larger than popcorn chicken, they had a little more breading than I would have liked. Also nicely seasoned! Personally I could have used a touch less salt, but I know this is due to heightened sensitivity on my part. The kicking bayou sauce was pleasant, but didn't offer enough kick for me. It was creamy and savory, and did offer a nice dimension to the dish. They also have hot sauces on the side if you are looking to add that kick! I can't really comment on the price, since events like July 4th usually result in higher prices. The service was fairly quick, especially for something that came out fresh! I'd be happy to give this truck another try, only I don't see myself going down for o Rhode Island for it... yet

I will preface that the restaurant was extremely crowded and maybe short staffed. Our dishes took forever since a lot of the other guests (us included) were attending a comedy show close by. Our sever did apologize and mentioned the kitchen was backed up. And, the General Manager also apologized after the fact which I appreciated as well. Food: I ordered their Harvest Salad with Steak on it and it was awful. Steak had no flavor and also came with very little dressing. My husband ordered their Buffalo boneless chicken and said they were lacking sauce. Service: Lacked due to the overcrowded of the restaurant. We sat awhile before being greeted and our drinks took forever. Ambiance: the restaurant has a warmth and nice decor making you feel very comfortable here. Bar seats are very comfy. Overall: 3.5/5 we have been here before and always had a nice time. I think since it was very busy they could not handle the timing of the food and deliver excellent service. I will be giving them another shot for sure. Cheers ~

So many food places sound good, with wonderful menus, but turn out to be deeply meh or outright inedible. It's been a nice change that Axel & Byrne is actually good food, every time.
