The stop at Commonwealth BBQ was a spur of the moment decision a friend and I made after a few hours of outlet shopping left us starving. We were weary at first because we know the standard for BBQ in the north is not always high and given that this was out in Wareham and not in a densely populated place the quality may suffer. Damn, were we wrong. We roll up on this place that looks like and basically is a stand on the side of the road. There is a parking lot with roof overhang and picnic benches. The atmosphere alone gave it instant point for me. I snapped some pictures which you can see here or on the business page. The menu isn't as big as some BBQ places I've been but given the size of the place I assumed it was doing just fine. They have all the standard BBQ stuff; pulled pork, brisket, ribs, chicken, etc. I ordered the Commonwealth sandwich which is their basic pulled pork sandwich. I also got a stuffed jalapeno and the butternut squash. My friend ordered the same sandwich with a stuffed jalapeno and potato salad. Where this place really stood out for me was the sauces. They had 4. A standard tomato based sweet sauce, a tomato vinegar sauce, a tangy cranberry habanero sauce, and the BEST of all was the mustard BBQ. I sampled them all. The meat on my sandwich was good enough to not need any sauce at all...but when you taste the mustard sauce you will drown your food in it. You'll probably consider putting your head under the pump and just emptying the bottle into your mouth or at the very least filling your hands and pockets with it. I know I did. The butternut squash stood up well on its own too but add some of the cranberry habanero and you end up with something that tastes like Thanksgiving and BBQ all in one. The portions are INCREDIBLE. I think the sandwich was $8 and I swear I got 2 pound of meat on my sandwich. The squash came with that as well (or whatever side you choose). The stuffed jalapeno was $2.25 and i was skeptical but it was huge as well. Loaded with chicken and cheese. Absolutely amazing. I walked away spending a little over $10. This is more of 4.5 stars. I need to take points off because while they have seating none of it is indoors. I'm not about to eat BBQ in my car and on the day I went it was cold and windy. During the summer months I bet this place is packed and it probably rules but heaters on the roof of the overhang would do this place some good. I might consider driving the 45 minutes to Wareham just to come back. This is a must for any future outlet shopping. Never eat at the outlet mall as this place is only a mile away. read more

My goodness. How sad I am to give a 2 star to a BBQ place! I am the hugest fan of solid BBQ this side of the mason-dixon. When I was returning home from a long day on the road, I typed BBQ into yelp and I was so so so excited to try this place and headed straight there. Its all outdoor seating, which even though I was not prepared for it, still was nice. It was a bit too cold to sit outside or wait for my food but I have zero shame eating in the car. Depending on your desired experience, this could be a great or a bad thing. All kinds of nice menu items including some delicious sounding burritos. I was so thrilled to find a side of dirty rice. I ordered a caesar salad topped with beef brisket along with the rice. yelp checkin special for a free soda was happily honored. the wait was barely 15 mins, I snatched my food and dove right in. The rice was SO amazingly delicious. Diced fresh jalepeno, lightly seasoned white rice with black beans and a hint of lime. Crazy delicious. The salad was not so much. Maybe its just me , but I hate hate hate hate lazy dressing and even more so - I hate it when they use KENS dressing for caesar salad. I could have gotten over that but the croutons that were supposed to be these legendary homemade buttery concoctions were stale, humongous and burnt tasting. yeck.. And so much more sadly - the brisket was AWFUL. Not just kind of off... just NASTY. It was much more like beef jerky that had been left in the fridge uncovered for weeks. It was grey- like ASH grey - more grey than corned beef done traditional... and had no smoke to it at all. Instead there was a very chemical like type flavor that lingered and coated the mouth. Chewy and not tender at all.. sliced SO thin you could see though it too. What a crying shame. took 2 of my favorite things in the entire world to eat (salad and shanks of meat) and ruined it hard for a good minute as I TRIED to eat this. I gave up and surrendered the contents of the salad box to my dog. I then returned to the generous side of rice to ponder if these were even made at the same restaurant. The extra star is for the amazing rice and for being so kindly and nicely greeted by the staff member that was able to serve it up quick with a line and working all by himself. This is definitely a much better dining option alternative after a long day of shopping at Wrentham. A shirt 5 min drive to get you there. No table service and dining is al fresco. We got a few items on the menu to share. Stuffed jalapeño is interesting. I expected it to be a pepper stuffed with cheese covered in batter then fried but got something entirely different. It was a ground meat with peppers in it. My niece ate the pepper and said it has good heat. I didn't try any but she said it was alright. The bbq wings were good. The smoke flavor was there, wings were coated in tons of bbq sauce. Wings stayed juicy and moist. Get it. The smoked sausage was definitely the star of the show. Smoke perfectly with the right amount of spice. Moist and juicy. Will definitely get more of them next time. Brisket was a little dry but then I have yet to come across any bbq joint in NE that can do brisket like Texas. For the area, it's okay. Ribs were really dry. The two sides that we got - collard green and black bean rice were bland. Cornbread was dry. I'll pass. Overall a mix review but I'll definitely keep this place as a better dining alternative than the chain restaurants scattered around the area. read more

My wife and I had a hankering for BBQ, so we decided to try out Commonwealth BBQ in Wrentham. We each got beef brisket with different sides; our got a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. So what does $50 get you at a picturesque bbq shack? The brisket was more akin to boiled than smoked, the potato salad tasted like standard mediocre grocery store potato salad (with some dill thrown in, hey-Ho!) the bbq beans were watery and the corn bread was equal parts dry and tasteless. The cheeseburger was underwhelming; and if you can't even cook a burger, get out of the kitchen. The sweet potato fries were good. read more

I gave these guys a very negative review five or six years ago, not long after they opened. I've since been back several times, at first to give them another chance, and now as a regular -- the quality has steadily improved over the years. I'm especially fond of the cowboy beans which could be a meal in itself, and both the ribs and pulled pork are quite good. I do recommend calling ahead to avoid what could be a longish wait during peak times. Congrats to the team for sticking with the business and really bringing it up a level. read more

Went back again today as a coworker wanted to try it and not many places are open on Sundays at lunch time... eek!! Greyish in color and stiff and not tender whatsoever... as a coal miners daughter [ hehe ;) ] I know that the brisket should be tender MOIST and overall a great experience. I did not have that here. Stopped here for lunch while in the area. Food was good - I had a bowl of chili which had a nice heat to it and was very satisfying. My partner had the Mac & Meat - which was macaroni and cheese topped with the BBQ meat of your choice - he chose the chicken. This is a casual spot - with outside tables. This place delivers what you want them to deliver. The Barbecue here is quite good. We had beef ribs, pork ribs, and pulled chicken. All are good and so are the variety of sauces. Portions are reasonably generous and the price is around what you'd expect. Although you can eat outside and get bitten up by mosquitoes in the summer, you can also do take-out. You guys should consider upgrading the bathroom since it resembles what you'd find at a gas station. read more

Good BBQ with a picnic style open seating area. I love their briskets and Mac and cheese and almost everything I've had there is good other than the smoked wings. I found them to be a bit dry but everything else is really good. There's an assortment of bbq sauces that you can choose from on the side from spicy to sweet and everything in between(lots of sauces). It's a good choice for days when you just don't want to cook. I usually order 15 minutes ahead of time and it's always ready when I arrive and it's just a cool relaxed casual bbq joint. read more

Nice little BBQ stand ... nothing amazing or special, but everything was decent. I had the pulled pork sandwich with the fries. Sodas are cans in a cooler next to the pick up window. My sandwich wasn't earth shatteringly amazing, nor was it terrible. It wasn't moist but it wasn't dry. The sauces are pretty good and they offer a great carolina mustard based sauce, which is my favorite. Wasn't as fond of the red BBQ sauce which tasted a little like a watery ketchup. They really load the sandwich up! Almost too much for my liking ... I actually took some of the meat out because it was so big. Fries were seasoned great, if you like salt and tasted fresh. The high school kids working the counter hustle but customer service here is pretty much non-existant. What do you expect with 16 year olds working in a hot kitchen all day? Picnic tables for eating. It is a bit of an awkward system though. I think it would be a lot less chaotic if they hired one extra person to run orders. Give the customers a number for the table, and when the food is ready in the kitchen, have the runner drop it off at the table. There are a lot of people congregated in a small area near the window waiting to pick up an order. Last time I was there, I picked a spot at the table, put my soda down and went to grab my order when they called my number. When I came back, there were other people sitting at the table. They must have thought the soda was empty. I sat there and ate my food but it was incredibly awkward because it was like I was joining someone else's table and in the middle of their conversation. The prices are decent and the portions are big. Certainly would stop here again if I was in the area. Not the best BBQ in the world (far from it) but it's not bad for Massachusetts. read more

We randomly stopped by on a cold winter afternoon because it looked like the kind of a place that might be a diamond in the rough. And I was right! We tried the signature "Commonwealth" pulled pork sandwich, the fried pickles, the cornbread, and the mac and cheese. Everything was great! While the cornbread tasted slightly stale, the rest was 5-star worthy. The pulled pork sandwich could've used a bit more sauce, but they have their signature sweet sauce and a mustard version on tap if you need more! My husband is a recent fried pickle convert, and he was a HUGE fan. The portion was insane and the sauce that comes with them delicious. We split just these two things (the mac and cheese was a side) between the two of us and STILL had leftovers to bring home. Definitely recommend a trip! read more

I love this place! When you get out of your car, the first thing you smell is the wood smoker which enhances the food experience. So far I've had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and the buffalo chicken sandwich. I give 5 stars for both The pulled pork sandwich is stuffed with a ridiculous amount of tender smoked pork goodness( you will not go hungry with this sandwich) The buffalo sandwich is my favorite. It's the type of sandwich that you eat with your eyes closed, slowly chewing, savoring every bite. I anticipated trying this place for several weeks after passing it on the way to the outlets. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to expectations. The name says it all...the food is both common, yet expensive. Being from the south, I've had a lot of good barbecue in my life, but the pulled pork and beef brisket just tasted like meat, nothing special. I'd first like to say that the food at Commonwealth BBQ could easily be 5 stars (except the plain, bland cole slaw). The pulled pork, corn bread, and mac & cheese were all good! And the cowboy beans were delicious and had chunks of bbq meat in them. My biggest complaint is that we asked for BBQ sauce on the brisket and the girl working in back rolled her eyes and made a face as if this was a ridiculous request (at a BBQ place... really??). Then after spending $40 on two meals and a side, we get home and find no sauce on the brisket and no sauce on the side even though we had requested it. Luckily we had sauce at home or I feel this could have ruined the meal. Overall the food is great, I'd definitely go back. Decided to try them since I just moved a few months ago from Texas and missed my usual BBQ. Ordered online for pick-up straight from their website and had a bit of trouble keeping my order saved since every time I went to a different page the order would get erased and I'd have to start over. Once i got my order complete I had to create an account or link with another social media to complete my order which is really frustrating but not out of the ordinary. It was really convenient of them to have apple pay as a payment option. My order said it would be done in aprox. 20 minutes so I decided to get there about 10 minutes before since it was rather close to me. Once the time came up for my order to be ready the page that contained my order inquiry disappeared from my screen and took me back to the "order online" menu and I wasn't able to go back to it. I decided to go to the front pick-up window and ask for my order and was told it'd be ready in about five minutes, so i waited. There were a couple people ahead but it wasn't overwhelming with customers. Some people were getting their orders called out to pick it up by the workers but that wasn't the case for some, making it confusing to know whether we go to the window and ask for our order or wait to be called. That made things a bit frustrating since I didn't want to feel like I was nagging for my order while keeping others from getting theirs. I decided to go to the window a second time(third time technically but they ignored me the actual second time for some unknown reason). I asked about my order again and it seemed like the worker was confused about who I was and told me they didn't have an order for me...even after the same worker told me my order would be ready in five minutes. I would show them my order but the website did not let me (read sentence 6 for why I couldn't show proof) so I just had my proof of purchase from my bank app ready. After talking to other employees they finally found my order and I was able to go about my dinner. One thing I noticed is that most of the workers working with the food were not wearing gloves when touching the food which is odd since they were just packaging the food and NOT cooking it. Not sure who the cooks were but it seemed odd since most BBQ places those working w/ food are required to wear gloves when handling the food. I ordered a half rack of ribs w/ cornbread, corn on the cob, and rice. My wife ordered their Buffalo Chicken Sandwich w/ fries and got my daughter chicken tenders w/ cornbread. Ribs were decent sized but had ALOT of fat, even for St Louis style ribs. Rice came cold but that might of been due to the long wait of them figuring out where my order was. Everything else was nice and toasty and was blown away by the flavorful cornbread. A bit crumbly but flavorful nonetheless. My wife's chicken sandwich was delicious and her, as well as my daughter, could not get enough of the fries. The fries were very well seasoned. Chicken strips were more crisp than actual chicken so it was a bit tough for my daughter to chew. Maybe take it easy on the breading considering it's from the kids menu. Love the whole outdoor eatery scene but it was too hot to be eating outside. Prices for the food was more than fair. You really get your money's worth here. In the end my experience was nothing more than adequate. read more

Stumbled on this place while hungry with low expectations because we haven't had much luck with BBQ since we moved to New England from Atlanta. Happily surprised as this is the first good BBQ we've had so far. Meat was well smoked, juicy and tender. My only issue was the weird orange grease that overwhelmed the last third of my sandwich and made it inedible. I prefer the pulled pork on the dryer side with burnt ends and put the sauce on myself.
