The guys were personable and professional however what I asked for just wasn't done. I had a small step and landing put over existing steps and we agreed they would replace "kick board" or base that was rotted, they just put new steps over it so I'll have to have someone else remove their work to replace the rotting board. I asked the day they finished as I wasn't home the day they installed and they said it wasn't necessary and would have to remove whole thing to do it, I'm not an A hole so I just agreed to pay the 3k because they were good people and I didn't want to inconvenience them but now knowing I'll have to remove everything just to replace that piece of wood is not sitting well with me. Overall it doesn't look great to me and I expected more for that price. I gave 2 stars instead of 0 because the 2 brothers were very professional and seemed like good guys. They were the most expensive quote and I decided to use based off reviews , photos and how great the owner was in person. I hate giving good people 2 stars but I have to be honest . read more

This is not a review on the quality of their work. From what i read it is very good. This is a review on how this business operates. Luke gave us a quote to do our driveway and retaining walls of $15.4k. This was in July 2023. But they delayed starting the job and said when they were ready they would sign and ask for a deposit. I called mid Aug to check in and they said they were targeting around beg of sept. Sept comes and we see them on our street doing another house. I call them and Sean tells me the price they gave me was way off. They must have been looking at an old pricing sheet. Now it will cost at least $27k. I was honestly shocked that a business would operate this way but I suppose if you can get away with it. We couldn't be more disappointed with Commonwealth Masonry. They wasted our time and now we have to go back to pavers we turned down and see if they can take the job. Terrible business practices. Update: while I appreciate the business not starting the work and then upping the price, the right thing to do would have been to tell me asap something was wrong with the quote - not drag it out as if you were going to do the work - or work with me on a new proposal that meets in the middle. That is how I would handle a mistake as a business owner. read more

Overall, Commonwealth does high quality work at a decent price. We asked Commonwealth to do pretty extensive work to our side yard: Increase our retaining wall by 2 feet, add granite steps, a paver walkway and improve the grade of the yard. They did all of the work in a week, and it turned out great. We were so happy with the quality that we did a second project. They re-did our paver walkway and added stairs up to our house. Again, it turned out beautiful. Giving 4 stairs because communication is really key with Commonwealth (you need to tell them exactly what you want them to do), and both projects went slightly over estimate. read more

I hired Commonwealth Masonry & Paving to replace the stucco on my concrete steps and put in a wrought iron railing. The stucco looks terrific and the crew kept the area clean, including putting up Caution tapes to prevent any from walking on the steps until they had dried. After the railing was placed (making sure it was far enough away from a walkway berm which could have been a hazard - they figured that out, I didn't), they scraped and repainted both the house's wrought iron porch support and the new rail to match the house's trim. Their work is terrific! They are perfectionists, making sure everything is done well and neatly for a very reasonable price. The workers (family members raised in this business) were always on time, and gave incredible effort and quality in discarding our old driveway and laying the new asphalt. They are terrible. Do not pay them 100% of the money unless they finish everything. We paid them in full, but they didn't finish the job. Some of the job they did was terrible. Luke signed the paper wrote the things he promised he will fix, but they never came back. He said he got injured and he can't work so he'll fix everything when he gets better. It's over a year now and he never came or he never paid for the job needs to be fixed. Our garage is terrible now they didn't use enough cement we can't event paint over it doesn't hold the paint. We were having flooding issues and recommended that we: -Jackhammer and remove the concrete from about a 300 SQ. ft area -Remove 2 feet of dirt and replace the dirt with 1.5 inch stones. -There was compacting, mesh, waterproofing and gravel involved as well. This was a lot of work as it all had to done by hand. Today we had a tremendous amount of rain and there was no flooding. This was 5 times more expensive then putting up a wall but I feel was totally worth it. Sean was a pleasure to work with and treated me well. read more

They removed the old mortar by hand and sanded the face of the bricks to avoid using acids. The wall looks fantastic and ivamvso happy to have found them. I called Commonwealth Masonry and Paving to craft a brick walkway for the front of the house after sewer line was placed. It was an emergency situation. They came when they said they would come and they crafted a front walkway I am really happy with. I can not tell you what it meant to have the job done right and it looks beautiful. Don't hire these people. I was concerned when they were supposed to start work and wouldn't return phone calls...but after two days, they called and told me that they would arrive in a few hours. I had previously asked if we needed to plan to close the business during paving; Sean assured me multiple times that this wasn't needed. They ripped up the lot, leaving me no parking spaces for clients. Luke (the other brother) told me that I would need to close on his first day on site. He wanted me to close THAT DAY. With no notice. Twice, they tried to pave across the front door (after assuring me that they would finish the job on Saturday). They put the two dumpsters that the business has on top of asphalt that wasn't set, leaving holes where the wheels were. When they finished, they didn't put any tape across the parking lot. We are on a main street, so people turned around on the asphalt before it was set, leaving wheel marks. Work was done two months ago. The gravel is coming up over the majority of the lot. There are still dumpster holes. Other people that pave said binder should have been put down first; this wasn't done. The top coat is not the thickness that they claimed they were laying down. In trying to investigate them, it turns out that there is no business registered with this name, either in Newton or in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I definitely recommend finding someone else to do the job. They were unpleasant people, and I'm trying to deal with getting the lot fixed. read more

I am extremely pleased with Luke Wall, his brothers Sean and Dan, and their crew at Commonwealth Masonry. They have done a number of projects around my house and have been consistently competent, pleasant, and easy to work with. Luke always describes in detail the work he is proposing to do; then he and his team do it. My best and most obvious recommendation is that I am about to engage Commonwealth Masonry again--this time to point the stonework around the foundation of my house. The work they have already done for me includes installing heating cables on my eighty-foot, steeply inclined driveway. Starting in the winter of 2018-2019 I no longer have to deal with plowing and shoveling that huge expanse. It's hard to describe the feeling the first time I looked out the window and saw everything covered in white snow except the black asphalt surface of my driveway. Saying I'm pleased is an understatement. Luke and his team also repaired and sealed the interior walls of my cellar. Before they did this, much of the cellar floor flooded with a quarter inch or more of water during heavy rainstorms. Now, even during the torrential rainstorms of March and April 2019 around Boston, not one drop has come in through those walls. Other work they have done here includes repairing a large retaining wall that was hit by a truck, rebuilding three other retaining walls, replacing the cement garage floor, pointing the red brick chimney, installing a new granite deck on my back porch and four granite stairs to that deck, and installing a full flight of granite stairs to my front porch. Luke has demonstrated his expertise in designing masonry that is strong and aesthetically pleasing. And his crew members have shown themselves to be skilled craftsmen. They also installed an adjacent retaining wall to divide the grass yard and the cement court. They were in an out in a single day, and we are very pleased with the results. I had the pleasure of meeting Sean, Luke and his wonderful family during a pretty involved exterior project. What a wealth of experience 3 generations of experience lends itself to! Not to mention the HARDEST working group of men they employ. I am so happy to have met them personally and professionally. First, I should say that I've not hired for Masonry or Paving service before and this was my first experience. Second, I found them on Yelp, this was not a friend of a friend. I took a leap of faith and it worked out incredibly well. To say this business exceeded my expectations is an understatement. I am floored at the level of skill and honest way they dealt with me throughout this project. When we ran into Ledge stone and hidden utilities during excavation they were quick to make reasonable modifications to plans and to present reasonable options to me. Even Dad/grandpa, a lifelong mason, was on hand from Ireland to lend a hand and provide suggestions. Cost was a factor for me and they gave me seriously more work and even additional materials to make the project not just complete, but amazing!
