I got a great haircut from Taka a few months back. It was such a great COVID-safe experience. Like a lot of people, I've avoided going into a salon and so when I do choose to go in one, I do my best to make sure they are adhering to the latest safety protocol and guidance. I really appreciated everything this salon did to ensure my and their safety. My shampoo was thorough and Taka & I had a great chat about my time in Japan and his time in New York. My haircut had me go from quite a long hairstyle to a short chin-length bob, so I could donate my hair to Children With Hair Loss (an organization that makes kids wigs). Taka cut 8+ inches off and my new style was precise and I was quite happy with it! I got lots of compliments and I still am so happy with my haircut. I would recommend Taka anytime! read more

I get barbering haircut here regularly and I love my haircut every time. My stylist knows how to cut hair to your attributes, as well as make the hair look great even as it grows. In my opinion, it 100% beats going to a barber if you want a specific style. My wife also got her haircut here after my recommendation, she wanted a shorter haircut with some blue highlights and it came out amazing, classic and cool, but trendy. She loves it. read more

Commune and Aki (the owner) is the best! I've been going to Commune since I gave it a chance in 2007 (based on great reviews in Yelp! actually). Aki has great skills and is a very nice person. Commune at KRASI - Hair Salons Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I went to commune for a Cezzane keratin treatment eight weeks ago. It is the third time I had the treatment done at the Salone, with Kaori. I called the salon today to explain that the treatment is not staying as well as the others done prior to my appointment in February. My hair is drying with a lot of frizz and it looks like the treatment is completely out of my hair. When I called the salon the manager told me that I could come back for an "adjustment" but I would be unable to return to the salon again. I than got a call back from the salon and spoke with the stylist, Kaori, who told me the same thing. There is no reason why I should be unable to return to the salon. Asking for an adjustment is not a reason to refuse to service a client for an inexplicable reason. I have been to the salon multiple times and never had an issue. Calling once with one issue and asking for it to be fixed is not an unrealistic ask. Please treat your loyal customers better. I have referred many clients to your establishment and I think it is time we find another salon. read more

I've been going to Kumiko for years, and I never want to go to anyone else! I had to book an appointment at another salon recently while I was out of town, and the contrast was shocking -- I had a way worse cut and a way worse experience all around. So here are all the things wonderful about Kumiko: - she's really attentive, and keeps records of everything that's worked in my hair - she always takes her time to make it perfect. I never feel rushed. - when doing bleach, she checks in to see how my scalp is doing. - the whole experience feels luxurious. Great scalp massage while shampooing, hot towel on the back of my neck, attentive to all the little things like not getting water in your ear. - my hair always looks AMAZING when I leave! Everything from maintaining long hair to chopping it off to a lob, Taka is the only stylist I've trusted in NY to do it all, because of how he handles my hair with so much care and gives it SO MUCH TEXTURE AND BODY. I have gotten two haircuts from Shoko and highly recommend her! I only get my cut my hair once every 6-8 months. Honestly, once I get a cut that I'm happy with, I'm secretly afraid to go back and end up with something different. My hair is thick and wavy and a bit tricky. Shoko is talented, sweet and patient. Very happy with the maintenance haircut on long hair! Kumiko did a fantastic job! She took the time to listen and understand exactly what I had in mind. I wanted to maintain the length as much as possible. She was extremely careful with cutting the length and considerate about how I wanted it chopped. I took her advise on removing all the dry ends. Review of Taka who cut my hair yesterday. I don't have much to say other than it's PERFECT. It's exactly what I had in mind, and Taka was very patient and careful. We cut my hair in stages, adding texture at the end after it was dry. I came with two pictures and he really nailed it, in fact probably better than the pictures. Here's what my friend texted me after I sent her some pictures: SO GOOD! I love it! SO MUCH PERFECT SO GOOD Exactly the best Exceeding expectations Not that they were low, but it feels like it is what you were going for. This is so exciting I love it. Pretty good haircut, terrible front staff, super awkward atmosphere. I am usually practical, if I am getting a haircut the only thing matters is the haircut quality and nothing else. But this place was too much. I tried the step bone but several times when I lived there, and I liked it - the stylist was pretty skilled. What I could not stand was the weird atmosphere, perhaps the stylists and staff were not in good relations, they were whispering or sometimes mocking/giggling in a mean way, to each other or to whom I do not know. But they do it so much it gets really uncomfortable. The worst part is the receptionist. No hello or hello back, no response, which is fine - you don't have to smile for sure, but why do you have to be so hostile-rude? When I come in to the store they look at you like I am an intruder. The salon has a shop. I came in (met by a hostile glare) and I told them I am a little early so will look around the shop (no response, her glare follows me in the store as if I am trying to steal something.) The styllist was apparently waiting for me but no one notifies me. So when I decided to go to the salon section, it looks like I was making them wait. But the whole salon is watching me with a rather hostile pin-drop silence. Each time I went, I really didn't know what to do, you want me to wait outside the shop, or inside and not look around, or can I sit in the salon area and wait? I will do anything. Just tell me, front staff. Normally these things don't bother me as I am there to get just a haircut, but if you have to go and deal with the staff (which you do), and spend more than an hour in the salon, the weirdness and the receptionist's passive-aggressive mean rudeness will really get to you. So much so, that I quit going there myself for a pretty decent haircut. I am surprised myself - these usually don't bother me. Must be intense. NYC has many other options. read more

There are certain things that once you spend years getting it for free it's real hard to pay for later in life; for me those things are haircuts and movie tickets. In my younger years I pimped my hair out for $20 an hour to Aveda at hair shows around Southern California, but then I moved away to college and never got another hair cut again. Three years ago I finished my masters degree and finally had to get a real job. I bought a white button down shirt (still never been worn) a suit (ok, just the jacket) a Tiffany necklace (on my Mom's credit card) and a (overpriced) Pina Zangaro portfolio and quickly landed a position. Proud of my "adult" accomplishments, I decided it was time stop my haircuting fast and asked my friend with the best looking hair where I could get me some. She directed me to Commune with the words "I close my eyes as she cuts my hair and pray that when they open I will look half Japanese" this alluring description began my 2 year patronage of stylist Nobu who with little instruction gave me brilliantly choppy layered locks and tiny seasonal bangs. But then Nobu moved back to Japan and I was at a lost - 8 months later with a head of horrid split ends I called Commune to save me again. My instructions were simple, cut off as much as you want, make it super choppy and please get as much body into my bone straight fine hair as possible. My new random stylist Mika had a wider language barrier then Nobu, so I kept making funny finger gestures like I was waxing an evil mustache on my head to explain the flyaway tips that look so awesome on me. But as the 5 inch strands began falling from my head, I just sat back and let Mika do her thing, and oh lordy, she gave me the best hair cut I've ever had! The prices have gone up to $60 which I would have a really hard time paying if the woman who does the wash/phenomenal head and neck massage, with your choice of aromatherapy oils (sweet and bright lemongrass for me!), didn't have magically strong nimble wizard fingers that steal away you worries and washes them away down a warm fragrant drain. Even if you have to wait to been seen, the front of the salon is minimally filled with lovely jewelry - but hands off, I want it all. read more

Fellow girls with long hair, I know you understand my plight: every time I've tried getting an expensive haircut I've always left feeling like my hair just looks the same, and as I end up putting my hair up in a bun half the time anyway, it just seems like a waste of money. However, after a recent major hair color fail at a dirt cheap salon in Chinatown, I realized that maybe it's time to graduate from bargain basement to something of slightly higher quality. I'm so glad I found Commune because it seems to hit a nice mid-point. The stylists seem really experienced and have a great eye, but their services won't break the bank. After having a good experience with a bang trim ($20) as a walk-in, I came in again for a haircut with Ami. She was great to work with and I immediately felt like I could trust her taste. It didn't hurt that she herself had amazing hair! A haircut with a 'regular' stylist is $70, which is more than what I was spending in Chinatown but definitely reasonable for such a classy salon. And obviously since the stylists are all Japanese they're comfortable working with Asian hair, which can be tricky to cut. Ami said that she was recently in Japan taking a course to specialize in a certain hairstyle. These peeps don't mess around! After a great experience with a cut, I'm planning on going back to them to help me fix my less than stellar color job. To top it off, the salon itself has a fantastic vibe: tranquil, clean, and beautiful. They even have a cute little gift shop and an adorable coffee shop attached! This salon/boutique is adorable and all the girls are super friendly and stylish! I went on a rainy Wednesday after work and was warmly welcomed. I've been to Japanese salons before and they've always done a good job on my hair - this was no exception. My stylist did a great job - I got a lavender aromatherapy hair wash, blow dry and flat iron. She only used a leave-in conditioner on my bi-racial hair and it still smoothed out beautifully. Unfortunately, the girl who did my hair seemed a little less than thrilled to be working on my kind of texture. She made a few comments about my hair being damaged and difficult to style (when it's not!) and couldn't really understand why I just wanted a blow-dry and style rather than a full on haircut. She wasn't rude at all, but it was still a little off-putting. Overall, she did an amazing job on my hair - it's one of the best blowouts I've gotten in the city and my hair was shiny and smelled like lavender for a week. But I probably won't be going back because I'm not into being treated differently because my hair texture is different. Again, I recommend it to anyone with Asian or Caucasian hair because they'll do a great job, but head to the Latinas in the neighborhood if you have bi-racial hair! read more

So I've been going here for years and loving it and loving that it's called "Commune" (wha?) and loving their crazy feather-intensive seasonal window installations and their relatively (for the quality) rock-bottom prices, but I never was moved to say anything til yesterday, when I got the haircut that you're always dreaming about. You know. The one where you walk around for the entire rest of the day casually flipping your hair around and imagining that you are Alicia Silverstone in the video for 'Crazy' (Why is this my beauty standard? Weird). BEST HAIRCUT EVER. Also, the shampoo/head massage is insanely great and worth the price of admission all on its own. It makes me wish I was a dude, or a lady with a short haircut, so I could have this joyful experience more than once every four-six months. Everyone here takes pride in their work and it makes such a difference. Yay Commune! The only reason there are not five stars is that I feel like I can't wholeheartedly recommend this place for color. If you are scrimping, it is great color for the price. And if you're just looking to cover some grays or something else easy then they'll be totally fine for you. But after a couple of kinda 90s highlights experiences here I get my color done at a much less chill, much pricier salon, and it's better. Sad but true. read more

This hair salon is aesthetically so beautiful and my hair cut/blow out was phenomenal. I have very long hair and am bi-racial. Having my hair done (especially a blow out) is always a source of dread because I'm used to stylists not really knowing what to do with my hair or just wanting me to "embrace" my curls. (Which I do at home very often but sometimes ya just want a blow out ya know?) my stylist at Commune was super understanding and nice. He gave me a great cut and a beautiful blow out in a relatively short amount of time (especially for my hair). Loved the work and the atmosphere. Recommend highly and will be going back! I've had a couple of fantastic haircuts here. My last one (a bob with bangs) has gotten a lot of random compliments. Shoko did the cut, and did a great job with thinning out the ends. Bang on! For a "decently" priced NY haircut, you can't beat this place. For 55 bucks your hair is expertly cut and your wallet isn't suffering from the Manhattan (or other local places) price tag. Very consistent quality. I'm a bit of a hairdresser whore, so I don't see the same person twice, but I'm always happy there. They spend the time doing a quality job. They also have excellent hours so if you need a later evening appointment (even on Sunday!), they can generally accommodate a real person schedule. They also have a fantastic gift shop where is great to pick up a last-minute present. 4-stars! read more

I have NEVER been to a salon where i've walked out with frizzy hair. The girl refused to blow dry-straighten my hair because i have curly (bi-racial) hair and she "didn't have enough time!!" The conversation went a little like this: *as she takes a diffuser to my hair to with little to no product* me: um ... i'd really like to have my hair blown out flat and straightened her: but you have curly hair!! i just don't have time i have another appointment me: *pissed* what kind of salon refuses to blow dry my hair because it's "bi-racial" or not naturally straight?! I doubt i'll be going back. As for the hair cut, i won't be able to see it until i straighten it out ... MYSELF. when going to a salon you want to come out feeling like a million bucks. not hiding your hair until you get home to style it because the girl didn't "feel like it." waste of money. read more

This place is so precious it makes me want to cry :') I am not usually one to go to fancy salons, and I usually go as a model(as was the case here) or have a friend do it, but I am looking forward to coming back to this salon and paying for a service! Went in as a dye model for Shoko (who was super sweet and very professional) and came out with a totally unexpected dye job that I loved. In addition to the salon, the gift section was perfect, and each item was merchandized very well. It was very refreshing to see merchandise styled and presented so beautifully, makes me want to buy everything(dangerous) but so nice.....!!! read more

So, being the impulsive, procrastinating lil' mess that I am, I wait until Friday night at 7 pm to decide that I want to chop off several inches of my current 'do. I check trusty ole yelp and call another salon off the Bedford L stop. The woman on the other line of this particular first salon was snippy and rude. OK, I get it. Not time for a haircut, even though you're still open for another hour. So I call Commune and inquire as to whether it was too late to schedule a walk-in. They were friendly and told me of course not! I rush to get there and arrive by 7:15. Apologetic, I rush in but the girls there are so nice and tell me not to worry. I check my bag and get a shampoo and aromatherapy head massage. You get to choose the scent you want - I chose orange. Heavenly!! A great surprise after the hellish workweek I'd been having. After the shampoo/bliss session, I sit in the chair for my cut and even though I don't really know what I want, the hair dresser (Aki? I can't remember her name ...) is super sweet and helps me decide what would look good. (Side note: I'm from North Carolina, where hairdressers have no idea how to make asian hair look "cool" and where the makeup artists give you huge drag queen eyes because well, basically because I was the ONLY ASIAN IN MY ENTIRE TOWN and they have no idea how to work on girls who aren't blonde.... so it's nice to be somewhere your hairdresser is not only asian herself, but actually knows how to texturize and cut asian hair! a novel idea, and exciting too!) After about a half hour, I have this great new cut that is easy to maintain (I'm a pretty big let's-not-spend-more-than-5-minutes-on-my-hair kind of girl) so I really appreciated the whole wash n go aspect of my new 'do. Overall, a super great experience. The cut was only $60 and I'm still loving it. I'll definitely be going back. read more

Exceeds your expectation with an elegant salon, top service and WOW hair! I have been looking for a salon that I love for a long time, especially a place that could work with my really curly hair. Dominican salons are great, but seem to always be packed and over charge in my area. All natural salons are used to tight knit curls and aren't sure what to do with my hair. And Manhattan salons tend to do straight. So where was I to go? Add half a shaved head to the mix and I felt my options waning. I went to Commune on a whim, needing my hair blown out for a photo shoot I had later in the day. To be totally honest, I was a bit skeptical and wasn't sure Japanese women would know how to deal with curly hair. My skepticism was immediately replaced with excitement when Akita and her team starting working on me. The service was fast and their hair wash and massage was excellent The products smelled delicious and Akita made my hair look fabulous! I hadn't had a haircut in two years. My regular stylist of five years relocated a few months before COVID and I was terrified at finding someone new. I have really long hair that I'm obnoxiously precious about, and always have nightmares about asking for a trim and walking away with a bob. I booked an appointment at Commune after DAYS of researching and reading yelp reviews. I could not have been happier with my experience! Kumiko was an absolute dream who listened to me stress about needing more than a trim but wanting to keep as much length as possible. She cut off about five inches but made it look like she BARELY cut off an inch, and put so much life, shape, and bounce back into my tangled, rat's nest of a mane. A true Artist. The salon itself is also beautiful and so serene (and COVID safe!) I immediately felt wonderful the second I walked in. I've had two haircuts here and both times I loved the results. I can't comment on any service, since I've only done the cuts but I will say that they brought my hair back to life. Before I had my cut at Commune I got a haircut at another well-known and expensive salon in Williamsburg where my request for just a trim and an update to my long layers turned out to be a hack job. It was shorter then I had wanted and the came out with a lot of hair removed to thin it out and texturize it. Well, I am a low maintenance, wash and go girl with normal healthy straight hair and that hack job I had at the other salon made my hair flat and thin looking with too many flyaways. I tried to grow out my hair and then went to Commune to have it cleaned up. Well they did a great job. They only used regular scissors, as opposed to those razoring style scissors, and they cleaned up all my ends and didn't take too much off so that my hair could be thick again. Went a 2nd time recently and again, terrific results!! I would highly recommend this place for a haircut, especially if you are low maintenance. I got a cut that looks just as great washed and dried at home as when I walked out of the salon. read more

It's always difficult finding a new salon/stylist. Thank you Yelp (and Yelp reviewers!) for always providing great feedback to help guide me in the right direction. I've been in dire need of a hair cut ever since I moved to Brooklyn last year. Yes, I am extremely lazy and I waited 9 months or so before getting this hair cut, but like I said, it's difficult finding a good stylist. So as you can imagine, my hair was long and getting rattier by the day. Made an appointment with Shiho and she was so nice and pleasant to talk to, I barely even noticed that she was chopping off 9 inches of my hair! I had decided on a "lob" style (long bob) a while ago and was just really nervous to actually go through with it. She brought out her iPad and we perused some pictures and I showed her some pictures that I had found as well. The haircut was a success, although I do feel like I wanted it a bit shorter so I'll probably go back in 3 months to chop off another inch or two. I gave 4 out of 5 stars only because I feel like it lacks some edginess that I really like. My haircut was nice and cute, but I don't think this is the type of place you go to for an "edgier" look. But that's okay, a good cut is still a good cut. Also, the front of the salon was a gift shop with really cute items, great to peruse while you're waiting :) The salon itself was tiny but filled with light and I loved the light and airy feel, everything about this place just made me feel comfortable that I made the right decision :) read more

I've been to so many places in the city (part of my job is reviewing salons and stylists for magazines and websites) and by far my favorite cut has been from Commune. Kumiko knows how to cut hair and did exactly what I asked for (which included advising me on what kind of bangs would work best for me). You cannot beat the price for NYC and you also get an amazing scalp massage and hot towel during your shampoo. I highly recommend Commune. read more

What a shame :( I loved the look of the place from the outside. The shop is super beautiful. But for the second time going in to ask about appointments the service was upsettingly rude. I went in explaining I'd just moved across country after ten years with the same stylist. I asked to speak with a stylist about what she would recommend so I could get a clear idea of her vision. She greeted me with "yeah sorry I was just trying to eat my lunch". I'm not sure how I was supposed to know that, considering the receptionist got her. After telling her what I didn't like about my hair and being nervous she said she can't work with someone without being able to be creative and that her clients need to be relaxed to do what she likes. So unless you're willing to go somewhere without any direction or help on your hair and be met with an attitude that you're unwelcome and bothering them, I'd highly suggest looking elsewhere. The salon was also completely empty which is typically a red flag considering every salon in the area is jam packed. Such a disappointment. read more

This review is only based upon my first haircut experience here. I got bangs and hair trim by...what's her name, Kumiko? She was good, just a few things I sort of expected the Japanese hair stylists won't do happened here though..(splashing water on my face while blowing my hair with dryer after shampoo, my bangs got into my eyes, etc) That being said, I liked the result. It's clean, and not a bad look for $60! I also am a fan of the space and decor of the shop. I always adore the window display here. Very nice salon. read more

Thank you Mika for being adorable and for being able to cut bangs STRAIGHT. You would think that this is an easy feat for a hair stylist but guess what? Its not. I'm just super stoked that I found a salon with a good hair stylist in my neighborhood and that it also just happens to be Japanese. If any of you ladies want perfectly straight bangs and not a whole lot of product in your hair, this is your place. Go to Mika, she is rad.
