Absolutely a horrible experience with this group.....they completely blew me off - unbelievable. I was a preferred referral from my former CPA who retired, and this organization led me to believe that they were going to take me on as a customer and "take care of things". After no return phone calls after numerous messages left...it actually got to the point where I asked them "are you" or "aren't you" going to take me on as a new client? Just tell me if I need to look for a "Plan B". They kept stringing me along with tax returns soon due, then just stopped answering the phone ....beyond unprofessional behavior! I had the exact same experience as another reviewer. I actually created this account so I could review my horrible experience here. I was also referred to them when my CPA retired, and they were helpful setting up a time to meet. I had an initial meeting with them in early March 2018, and everything seemed fine. I provided them the information they needed and waited to hear back. I didn't hear anything for almost two weeks. I tried e-mailing and calling multiple times but no luck. My wife and I moved across the country late March/early April, so I was anxious to hear from them that everything was OK. I explained this information in many messages but still, nothing. After calling a few more times once we were settled in our new home, I finally touched base with someone after incessantly dialing their number one day (most of the time it just went to a voice mail). They assured me my taxes would be ready that week, and wouldn't you know it, they were sent over that afternoon. Come to find, we owed $2,000 more than our 2016 taxes even though neither my wife's or my job situation had changed. After reviewing it, I found they left out all of the deductions I provided them (I'm an independent contractor with a home office). When I informed them of that, they asked if they could have the numbers once more. I frustratingly provided them with the numbers, and that's the last I heard from them. I followed up five more times asking about our updated taxes (it was now about a week/week and a half out before they were due). About 3 days before the due date, I had to inform them of our disappointment and told them we would prepare our taxes through TurboTax. We explained we would not be using their prepared taxes because they never corrected their errors and failed on numerous occasions to respond to our questions about them. With 3 days before taxes due and their poor communication up to that point, we were too stressed out to hope they would respond on time. Now today, of course, we received a notice in the mail that we owe them $315 for the tax preparation that we didn't use. Fantastic! Money well spent for the headache, stress, and complete disregard they showed us. My guess is they either bit off more than they could chew with all of the new referrals, are disorganized at their office, or are just plain crooked. Which ever one it is, I certainly wouldn't take a gamble with an accounting firm that has any of these qualities. You're certainly better off just doing them yourselves, and with the countless of other accountants in Chicago, I wouldn't roll the dice with this one. read more

Where do I begin?? I guess I started using Community Accounting Services in about 2001 or so...quite a long time ago. I own a very popular independent cafe/sandwich shop in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, which I opened in 1993. My first accountant was a very nice guy, but he was a bit wishy washy. He let me do whatever I wanted since I was young and didn't really know any better, and he never really told me the hows or whys or impact of my actions. His practice was very casual and home based, but again I didn't know any better. I don't really respond well to cold calling, but I agreed to meet with Ed for an accounting interview even though I was convinced that it would be a waste of time. All of these years later I see now that a big part of why I have survived 25 years in one of the toughest industries in America, the restaurant industry, is due in large part to Community Accounting Services, and most specifically to Ed. Knowledge is power, and Ed definitely knows his stuff. They are always attending accounting and IRS seminars and conferences around the country to hone their skills because the tax law is constantly changing. All monthly paperwork is required to be sent in a timely manner in order to keep me properly up to speed on the health of my business; everything is extremely well organized: checklists are required, vendor totals, checks written logs, all bank statements, communications from tax authorities, etc must be submitted monthly and are then electronically scanned and given back to me so that I still have them for my files. As Ed has often explained to me, they have systems in place that will ensure quality work will always get done right the first time. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for I guess! Everyone is extremely helpful and friendly. Even though some of the staff has changed over the years, most everyone stays for a long time and knows my specific situation, and even my voice when I call. Besides the owner Ed...Sandra, Letty and Miyuki are all awesome and have bent over backward to help me many times...probably many more times than I deserve ;) Even though I am "sometimes" late with my information they always come through in the end. So, basically I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I didn't trust Ed and his crew with my business and livelihood why would I stay with them for more than 15 years? I wouldn't! Many thanks guys! To attempt to describe the level of service and care of the people at Community Accounting Services is difficult, bc I have never experienced an accounting firm with such wonderful people and high quality service who truly care about their clients. I had a guy who had done my taxes for 15 years and then retired and I was very nervous about someone else doing my taxes.
