I would caution anyone looking to use John for their tax-filing purposes. All seemed to be good and well, until it wasn't. I used John's services for two years. The first year was pretty standard. The second year we had a few issues with a non-Illinois state tax return, where an issue was overlooked and we later were contacted by that state that we had unpaid taxes. This is a scary situation, no doubt, but it was eventually resolved - not quickly, but he showed a little urgency. My major disappointment was when I was corresponding with John to file taxes this year, and he suddenly decided to deny services to me. I was taken aback, as it was out of nowhere, and I am still unaware as to what it is that bothered John about me. I inquired, but he did not respond. I find this to be somewhat troubling. Perhaps his reasoning was something he was not proud to say, or perhaps he did not feel it was worth spending the time to explain. Either way, it was a bit frustrating on my end, because while last year had been less than ideal, I was still pleased enough to keep using John's services, and had been depending on him. To suddenly have my tax filing plan spun into disarray was unprofessional. To offer no reasoning as to why he did this was inconsiderate. read more

Prior to finding John, we were using a family friend as our accountant. Then my husband, being self employed, started making more money and we needed someone more efficient. I'm so happy to have a found him! He has been our CPA for the last four years (I think) and has provided outstanding service. He is very thorough, personable and proficient. He does his best to save you money (A+++ for that!). If you have questions or concerns, he is quick to respond. As far as his prices and how he charges goes... I think it's pretty comparable to others. I will say this, he is definitely the type of person looking out for your best interest which not all CPA's are out to do! I found John through a Google search and decided to use him based on his Yelp reviews. I'm very glad I did. John did a great job with our tax work. To start with he thoroughly went through our returns for the past three years and he found a large error that I made using TurboTax. He filed an amended return for us and we're getting a nice refund check back. He also did a great job with this year's return. I found John on Yelp and he had good reviews so I gave him a call and I'm glad I did. As usual, I procrastinated to prepare my taxes and was in a huge hurry to get them finished ASAP. He was very accomodating to my schedule and we got them finished very quickly. He found things that I could have been writing off for years that my previous accountant didn't mention. He was also a very likable guy and I actually had a good time chit-chatting during the preparation process- a first for me when it comes to paying taxes. The west loop location was convenient for me and I found parking easily. His rates are comparable to what I was used to paying. Found John here on yelp, he had more reviews previously not sure what happened to all them. There where about 7-10 reviews all of which where positive I found myself in a bind to file my tax extension before the Oct deadline when my other accountant fell through. Of the 3 people I contacted from yelp he was the only one to respond and help me with my issues. He was friendly, helpful, and I will definitely be using him in the future. I used John Brand as my accountant last year and could not be happier with the results. Sadly, my accountant passed away around April of 2013 so I filed an extension for 2012. I walked into Mr. Brand's office in October very disorganized and anxious. He helped me get organized and took me though the forms step-by-step. Although I refer to yelp quite often to read reviews for pretty much everything, I have never written a review. My experience with John has prompted me to write my first. He is professional, courteous, and very competent. I asked him to review my old tax returns and while doing so he found errors my previous accountant made. He then filed amendments which resulted in a significant amount of money (significant for me anyway) back from the IRS. YEA! I just had an individual tax return to be filed but, he spent a lot of time with me and answered all my questions. I HIGHLY recommend him. read more
