My Fiance and I visited them because we were interested in adopting a kitten to love and add to our little family. I understand that they are protective of their cats, but some of the ladies were incredibly off-putting and rude when we asked for a chance to interact with one of the cats. It felt like they didn't want us to adopt. Lea had to "interview" us before we could even hold the cat - and was quite rude. I had to adamantly and repeatedly reinforce to them that I understood and agreed with their rules, that I've been accustomed to owning indoor cats for my entire life, that I could provide a safe home, that I've never declawed my pets be cause I believe it's inhumane, and even explained what I do for a living - for her to understand why I don't want an indoor/outdoor cat, not for her to use my title as a way to decide whether she'd trust me. She STILL had to go ask someone else for clearance in order for us to HOLD the cat... She told the lady what I did, then they were like, "oh ok". I didn't like that my career was something that gave them clearance... Pay attention to the characteristics people show, not their title. Once I was cleared to hold the cat, I just wanted to get a couple minutes to get to know it's personality and the volunteer kept awkwardly hovering and interfering with the bonding process. Anyways, as a side note. I understand there is a clearance process for adoption, but I don't believe the volunteers should deprive their kitties that they care so much for from receiving love and cuddles. I've been to adoption shelters were the volunteers are warm, welcoming, and encourage people to hold their fur babies even simply so that they can receive love and socialized. I was really sad to see that these kitties were all shy, weren't socialized, and seemed depressed. I understand it's hard to be a volunteer, so for that, kudos to them! I just wish they didn't look down on people before knowing what they do for a living. read more

I hate seing a group that is trying to do so much good by saving lives get a bum rap. It's a tough job, especially if you are passionate and want to save as many kitties as possilble. Although my experience with CC4C was in 1996, it gave me the 2 best friends that I ever had. My Missy crossed over in 2012, she was 16. I just lost my Yogi in Sept. 2015. He was 19. I could not imagine the past 2 decades without them, and had it not been for Community Concern for Cats volunteers who rescued Yogi from a storm drain where he had been trapped for over a week I would not have been able to share my life and home with him or his best friend, Missy. And yes, I adopted 2 at the same time because, as most cat people know, very rarely does a person only end up having one cat! There are many agencies doing good work and the most important thing is that you adopt a rescured animal.. Period. read more

What a wonderful organization! They deal only with cats or kittens and have their best interest at heart. No case is too difficult for them to tackle. My foster kittens were extremely well cared for and I was always supported. If you see any negative reviews, keep in mind not everyone is approved to adopt a cat, and that sometimes makes people mad and say things that are factual. read more

Am VERY disappointed with this organization. I drove all the way from San Francisco to the Petfood Express in Lafayette to meet some kittens for adoption. When I got there, it felt like I was pulling teeth to get information about the adoption process. I felt that the volunteers looked down on me because I have never owned a cat before so I had a lot of questions. REALITY CHECK: you are supposed to encourage people to want to adopt from you. Not treat them like dirt. The woman there who I assume was the foster mom would not even allow me to hold any of the animals and insisted that I had to adopt two. SECOND REALITY CHECK: Did you know that not everyone can afford to raise two animals? And I would rather give a good home to one pet that sub-par home to two. Volunteer also told me to 'check the shelters because they don't care who adopts their animals' when I told her I could not adopt two. Horrible customer service. I understand you have the best interest of the animals at heart but you should treat potential adopters more kindly if you want to encourage more adoptions. I'll be looking elsewhere and will not be recommending this organization to anyone looking to adopt a cat. read more

CC4C has saved many stray and abandoned kitties in our neighborhood multiple times. Sadly, people keep abandoning them or not fix them so babies show up every year. Lea Chase has been amazing with helping us get our neighborhood under control by getting the strays fixed, as well as finding fosters to care for kitties that are adoptable until she finds them their forever homes. Each time I have reached out to her to inform her of a kitty situation she has responded immediately and put a plan in to action to help catch and get them taken care of. We are extremely grateful for all the help consistently provided by Lea and the CC4C organization. Catherine Burnham is also amazing. Many kitty lives have been saved by them. :) read more

PLEASE do not use this organization if you are interested in adopting a cat. Here's the sad process we went through: For 11 days, starting December 22, 2020, we (my husband, adult daughter, and I) were in touch with a foster parent, Patricia, regarding a beautiful, male Siamese cat named Moose, whose picture was posted on PetFinder through CC4C. We had a long telephone conversation and many texts back and forth. I had submitted an application on the 22nd, and after our phone call on the 23rd, Patricia said she felt we "are wonderful pet owners". Between Dec. 26-29, Patricia kept vacillating on what she was going to do with Moose - give him to us, give him to the original woman who rescued him, or keep him for her husband and daughter. On Dec. 29th, Patricia stated that she needed to adopt Moose out, and would bring Moose to our home on Dec. 31st as he was "meant' for us and our home was the "best" place for him. We went out the next day and purchased $208.33 worth of supplies from Petco for our new little guy, including a special Royal Canin kibble that he was eating. Late on the 31st, Patricia texted that she couldn't make it and said she would bring Moose to us on January 2, 2021. On Jan. 2nd, Patricia texted that she decided to keep Moose and not adopt him out at all, as her husband and daughter wanted the cat. We are devastated and have tried to appeal to Patricia, as well as, to another person (Kay) with CC4C, who said she would have Gemma, the director (?) give us a call. No phone call, so we asked if our email could be forwarded to Gemma. We still haven't heard from Gemma to sort this mess out, and we have no cat. read more

I can see people giving 5 stars for this nonprofit for the fostering of animals and taking strays in but I would not even give them 1 star for the way they handle their adoptions. We had a very upsetting experience trying to adopt a kitten during the Maddy's Fund weekend. We went to Petco in Walnut Creek where there were cages of cats. I was surprised since it was later on Sunday and most places we had called had adopted most of thier animals. We were very specific about what we were looking for. A female kitten. Not male, not older and definetely not more than one cat. We filled out the appropriate paperwork and started holding and looking at the kittens. We found one that we fell in love with. An adorable little black kitten who immediately bonded with my boyfriend. He held her for over a half hour while I was given the 3rd degree. I was interviewed by at least 3 different people with some very personal questions. I answered everything truthfully, although I felt it was a bit odd. We found out that the kittens were not spayed yet even though it is a requirement through Maddy's Fund that only spayed / neutered animals could be adopted out. They said she had to be over 3 pounds before they could spay or micro chip her. She was clearly old enough to be spayed. So, it was not going to be up to us to figure out timing, scheduling recovery etc...Not something we planned but we so wanted this little girl. After close to an hour we were approved! We were very excited to be able to give this adorable kitten a loving home. We went shopping through the store packing up all the necessities. I found it a bit strange that some of the people from this orginization were following us around. They were trying to be helpful in telling us what we needed to get but I have had cats/kittens before and knew the basics. The size of my litterbox became an issue for some reason and the pushing of some sort of pellet type of litter was suggested more than once. We survived the shopping only to be called over by one of the group members and told that the "foster mom", a Dr. Brenner who is a vet somewhere did not want that kitten adopted without the other kitten that was in the cage. The other kitten in the cage was smaller, younger and a male and not related to "our" kitty. We told them we did not want 2 cats and did not want a male, especially since they didn't fix either one of them. They said they were sorry but that was the only way we could get t his kitten. SERIOUSLY??? After going through all the questions, paperwork, shopping...you NOW tell us we can't have our kitty without taking on the responsibility of another animal???? We were dumbfounded and heartbroken. We asked why that wasn't put on the paperwork on the cage? No one would answer us. They just kept saying sorry. Oh...and then they tried to get us to take one of the older cats and males to boot!! I'm sorry, didn't I make it clear from the beginning that I wanted a young female?? Needless to say, we didn't get a kitten because I was not going to be bullied into getting 2 cats when we only wanted one. And that's what this was....call it bullying or blackmail, but they would not adopt a kitten to us without taking 2. This is not the first time this orginization has pulled this either. I had been looking at an older cat on petfinder...a female main coon. I talked to 2 different people, went through phone interviews and when I was setting up the appointment to meet the cat, I was told that this particular cat needed to go with the other cat it had been with since they bonded. Again with the 2 cat adoption requirement. I don't think these people want to adopt out their cats, either that or they force you into taking 2 cats to get the one you want. I seriously wonder if this isn't some sort of scam. They get money for adopting cats out but how many of those "2nd" cats get put right back at the pound or given to someone else since they weren't wanted in the first place?? I will never recommend this group to anyone. We missed out on Maddy's Fund but we will find a kitty somewhere else. I would rather pay the full adoption fee than get a cat from anyone associated with this group. If they don't want to adopt their kittens or cats individually, then just state that up front. You were rude to me you kept trying to get me off of the phone because you didn't even have time to speak to me and you never once offered any suggestions or help so please do not get on Yelp and act like you are a caring individual or non-profit organization because out of the several times we spoke you absolutely did not give a rats behind about my situation and ended up getting well over 100 cats killed! Now that our kittens are fully fixed and adopted, despite some glitches and unpleasant interactions, I can recommend this organization because they let you handle the neutering. This approach is a terrific amount of trouble for the women who raise the cats and facilitate the adoptions, but enables the new owners to subject their kittens to a difficult experience within a loving context and at an age which is healthier for them than the usual schedule most shelters need to follow. I would especially recommend visiting the Walnut Creek and the Lafayette adoption sites. read more

Community Concern for Cats was able to loan us a trap to catch our handicapped indoor cat after he had gotten out of the house and wouldn't come inside. He had lost 1/3 of his body weight and needed help after 6 weeks in the wild. He is now recovering and has been to the vet to get help. I can't imagine he would have lasted much longer as you can feel every bone on his spine at this point. Thank you Gemma for your help and advice. Everything you advised worked splendidly! read more

I have nothing but positive things to say about CC4C. After a suitable period of mourning for the loss of my very elderly cat, I had been contacting cat rescue groups for several weeks, looking to adopt a kitten into my household with a friendly dog. All the organizations had lengthy, intrusive forms to fill out, and all of them except the SPCA insisted that I adopt two. I had people quizzing me on the layout of my house! That is not what I experienced at CC4C. While they, too, had a lengthy questionnaire, they did not insist on calling my vet or my references. They said they just wanted to be sure I had a vet, and they trusted me. One point in their favor. Since I was adopting a kitten that had been fostered in a home with dogs, they were fine with me adopting just the one. Two points in their favor. Since our little gal was too small to spay, they said we could bring her back to one of their vets for free spaying, or use our vet here and they would pay us the amount of their fee. We live an hour away, but our vet was very expensive, so Dana offered to let us drop the kitten at her house overnight so we could avoid rush hour. That is above and beyond. They get many extra points for that! They were responsive to questions when I was emailing them about various kittens, too, and not all the other organizations were. Furthermore, I think they did a superb job of socializing this litter of kittens in a busy household with dogs. Our kitty has required almost no time to adjust. Finally, I think all the people from all the organizations really care about cats, but some of them go overboard, whereas everyone I met from this group seemed like a reasonable human being. I was sorry to read the other reviews where people did not have the same positive experience I did. read more

Thanks to Gemma and Community Concern For Cats, the black cat I trapped last night saw Dr. Josie today. The cat had a hole in his right cheek about the size of a dime. We all thought it was an abcess that was draining... pus was dripping from his mouth. Once you were within a few of feet of him you could smell the infection. Dr. Josie sedated him easily, she poked him in the butt through the trap wires and he didn't even move. Once he was sedated we were all able to take a closer look. Flies had layed eggs in the hole in his cheek and maggots were hatching. Dr. Josie pushed on what we all thought was an abcess... it was hard as a rock. It was a tumor that had burst. It was cancer. She gave him one final shot and he was out of pain. She said he would have died in a few days if left on his own. The life of a feral cat :( . As always, I am glad they find me. When they are suffering, I have no problem helping them move on to whatever is next. Thank you again Community Concern For Cats. If they ever solicit you for a donation, please donate. And if you have any good quality donations, please take them to their Rescued Treasures Thrift Store in Walnut Creek, where you will find treasures as well. I have nothing but GREAT things to say about this organization and the people who volunteer their time , their efforts, their love, their concern for the cats in the community who would be homeless without them....The wife and I recently adopted a pair of sisters and couldn't be more happy with our little fury domestic terrorists...I see some are disappointed with the process and the hoops they have to jump through but we ourselves hope that never changes...People forget these folks (volunteers !!) rescue, house or foster , and medically treat these cats and very much have a vested interest in cats well being if folks like it or not...Its a GREAT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION and hope with both our hearts it continues forever in our area..... read more

Today we went into the Walnut Creek Petco to get some litter for our kitty and decided to stop by the CC4C booth to look at some kitties. We have been looking for the perfect kitten to be a companion for us and our one year old cat. Let me just tell you what an unpleasant experience this was. Long story short, we were given some bullshit about how cats don't get along well with kittens (my parents have four of varying ages that disprove this "fact"). Then the director/leader or whatever came over to talk to us. She basically told us we hate/don't love our current cat because there's a possibility she will be an indoor/outdoor cat when we move to a more rural area (I understand her point about the risk cats are under when they go outside but telling me that if I truly loved my cat I wouldn't let her go outside is just condescending and nasty). The exchange was unpleasant and I felt that it was filled with condescension (I've raised cats for the past 25 years - I think I know what I'm doing). It's sad because they passed up the chance to give a kitten a dedicated, stable, loving home but from other reviews this seems to be their norm. I've decided that I would never go back and support this organization because of their horrible attitudes and customer service. There's many other great organizations that help pets and I will be visiting them instead. read more

My neighbor mistakenly thought my smart and moochy cat was a stray (as it was eating at her house after breakfast and dinner at mine) and called C4C. They told her to lock the cat in the house/bathroom until they could either convince her to keep it or she could give it away. (It is too bad that we did not bump into each other while I was out calling for the cat...) I got a call based on the microchip data from C4C and the C4C woman basically said I was a terrible pet owner for letting the cat go outside and that I should just let the neighbor keep her. When I asked for my cat back, she said that they had incurred vet bills of an uncertain amount for unspecified treatment for a minor wound and testing, assuming the cat was a stray, that I had to pay. When I stated that she should have waited for my approval before doing unneeded medical procedures, she said they should keep the cat until I paid up. I thought I would never see my much-loved cat again. After much time and several calls, C4C finally gave me the neighbor's contact information and my neighbor appeared at my door with the cat - she was very friendly. I am a big rescue organization supporter and have adopted several pets over the years from a variety of agencies (and have donated a good chunk of money to same). However, the C4C person was so aggressive and came across as so accusatory and suspicious that I felt the need to write this review. What should have been a great experience was a little nightmare and I was concerned that C4C was never going to return my cat. I will now have to lock the cat up tight to ensure that I never have to interact with C4C again. I am sure the C4C person meant well, was tired after a long day of saving cat lives, and has seen a lot of bad things. I absolutely respect that. However, that does not give her the right to belittle, accuse or extort a pet owner when C4C gets ahold of a cat that is not a stray. Also, C4C should have procedures in place to avoid expensive or unnecessary vet costs when a pet's owner is known (microchip worked perfectly). Leave a message, wait a reasonable time for a return call, before going ahead with non-urgent medical treatment or testing... I know that C4C meant well and probably does an amazing job saving actual stray cats, but not every neighborhood cat comes from a foreclosed home and not every pet owner has to live by their pet-care advice. Hopefully this review will help C4C to train its volunteers on good people citizenship as well as good animal citizenship - sometimes you need to step back and take a positive-energy break, even when you are doing good but often very sad work. read more

This organization helped me to keep and care for three kittens who had been a part of a litter of seven. Together with a neighbor we were able to safe trap the year old mom and all her babies (at different times over several weeks) and bring them all to be neutered and spayed. Through this process we were helped by Gemma and CC4C to get them all neutered and safely trapped and their first shots administered. With CC4C's help, we were assured that their first vet experience and "fixing" experience was taken care of in a reputable, clean and caring veterinary facility. While some of the ladies may seem brusque and abrupt, I could see how much they all (particularly Gemma) protect and love the cats under their care. Incidentally, between the neighbor and I, mom and her babies are grown up, healthy and happy in their forever homes. Thanks CC4C for helping change the lives of these ferals. . read more

Please do not adopt from these people! They will only adopt kittens out in pairs. They did not disclose this in their ad, nor on the cats' cages, nor to my face while I stood there with my three excited daughters, trying to choose the perfect little addition to our family. We spent 20 minutes looking at the cats, asking about their disposition, etc and no one said a word to us about this policy. Only when my daughters had chosen their favorite kitten, and we asked for the application, did the woman announce that their kittens could only be adopted in pairs. My daughters left heartbroken. If this is their policy, then fine, but why not disclose it in the advertisement? Why not put up a sign? Why not tell people while they stand there asking questions about the cats? What a waste of time and a sad experience for my children! Thankfully, we wound up going to the pound and found an adorable kitten that was spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped for a fraction of CC4C's fee. read more

These women made a very happy experience very awful! They were so nasty and rude to me from the moment I walked in. I was passed off and helped "at their convenience". I fell in love with one of the kittens.. they told me they recommended two..NOT required. Long story short.. I took home two kittens.. $320 later .. one of the kittens was very aggressive with the other one not allowing him to eat or anything. I called and said it wasnt a good living situation for the other kitten and was going to bring this one back. When I did.. I was threatened that they would go to my house and take the other kitten from me and that I HAD to adopt two. This woman was so nasty she actually made me cry. I was so attached to the little guy. I decided that even though I loved him I was not going to support an organization like this. I brought in the other kitten which was very emotional for me and told the woman (Kay) that I did NOT support her or her organization and that I gave this little kitten a wonderful home and if she wanted him back THAT bad she could have him. It made me sick to my stomach to know that I would support their cause. These women were nasty and pushy and just want to get rid of cats.. they dont care about anything else. DO NOT support this organization. I am going to report them to 7 on your side.. they make up rules as they go and are awful people! read more

I called a number of local cat groups because the feral that I feed got in a fight and needed medical care. I wanted to take him to a vet that was experienced with ferals and possibly help with the medical bill. Gemma from cc4c called me back before any of the other groups. I attempted to ask her advice on local clinics to take ferals to. She was curt over the phone and asked me to stop interrupting her. I realized part way through the call that her organization would help pay the medical bill - she was tired and overworked caring for seventy cats (but she didn't have to be rude) - so I stuck with the call and tried to keep my comments and questions to a minimum. I trapped the cat and took it in to the clinic she wanted me to use. Fine. Seven hours later, I was starting to wonder how the cat was doing. The vet clinic said the doctor would call me after he had treated the cat (really, he is waiting to do my cat last?). Then Gemma calls me. She tells me I am not to call the clinic. That I am to wait for her to call me. That she deals with cats and she is the contact person and on and on and on. I told her I was worried about the cat and wanted to know how it is doing. She got quite rude and nasty with me. I started to cry and hung up on her. She called back and I tried to apologize and say (again) that I was worried about the cat and she told me that she was only calling back to tell me that she would not be paying the bill and that she didn't want to work with me. Fine. I called the clinic and told them I would be paying the bill. I really hope the vet treats the cat better than Gemma treated me. But I have to wait until tomorrow to see the cat because he gets last position to be seen by a doctor that has been working all day and into the evening :-( Yes, I am emotionally invested in a feral cat that I have never been able to pet. Yes, I did ask for her help. But I wasn't rude or nasty. I would give zero stars if I could. read more

I have now read several bad reviews re: CC4C. I also am very disgusted with them. I had sent an email to Paula last Friday, who was the contact person for the Maddie's adoptions at PH Pet Food Express this last weekend. I sent her two telling her I was interesting in two siblings that were Burmese, my dream kitty. Her response was to fill out an application ahead of time. I sent another asking what time I should show up. No response. I called Pet Food Express & asked. They said they were separate but CC4C were coming at 9:00 to set up. I should've been there at 9:00, but it was advertised that they would show the kitties from 11-5. I showed up at 10:00 and the kitties were gone. I was told we would be given numbers so I thought they would begin at 11:00. Anyway, I blamed myself for not getting there earlier. I went to ARF, adopted a year old cat. Went back to Pet Food Express Sunday around three & believe it or not, more Burmese kitties. I adopted an 8 wk old male. At first the older cat didn't like the kitty, but now they're buddies. Only problem is the kitty went poop outside the box twice by my dining table! I emailed Paula & she sent me a brochure to read, which I did. Then she called yesterday to set up the time to fix the new kitty. I didn't realize I would have to got to Richmond at 7:30 a.m. But what bothered me the most was how RUDE Paula was on the phone. I asked for suggestions re: the poop problem & she was so condescending, I hung up on her! I asked for her supervisor in an email because I'm going to talk to someone about this! Don't want to talk to her! After reading reviews, I realize I am not the only one that has had a bad experience with this organization! They are supposed to be nice to us. These people at CC4C are saints, really. I've adopted a senior cat from them and wish I could have taken more! They truly love animals and are making real sacrifice every day to care for these wonderful little animals. I recommend that we all support them. They can certainly always use donations!...which truly go right into their food and medical care. read more

I would NOT recommend adopting a kitten from Community Concern for Cats. I went to find my mother a kitten on 5/31 to CC4C site adoption in Lafayette. We were treated rudely and turned away after only a few minutes. We wanted to adopt one kitten. We were told we could only adopt TWO kittens and NOT one. The woman was rude and told us to go somewhere else to find a cat. We had called in advanced and were not told we could not just adopt one kitten. Apparently ,they make up rules as they go along and judge people on the spot. These small adoption organizations tend to be a bit fanatic in their handling of the animals and are very strict with who they will and will not allow to adopt one fo their animals. I suggest adopting from the local SPCA or local animal shelter instead. read more

I was in desperate need of someone taking care of my cat for a month and community concern for cats came through for me. Kay was extremely caring and compassionate and gave me 2 peoples names that were very responsible for cat sitting. I ended up with a wonderful cat sitter and was so pleased with the service. The only reason why I am not giving this charity a five star is because even though this place does a lot of good for cats, I called and asked a question on if they can take cars for donations, and the woman on the phone was kind of rude to me just because I asked. read more

I adopted a cat from this agency 4 1/2 years ago. The experience then was pretty good, although they kept jumping over us to help other people although we were sincerely interested. Now I can no longer keep the cat, and the agreement we signed states we have to return the cat to them, but after months of phone calls I can't get in touch with anyone and will probably have to bring her to the pound, which breaks my heart. read more

I went to this people for an add they had posted to allow a service cat for my home. I had a 16 year old declawed by choice of parents. I am certified as a vet assistant in the state and have a certification to raise pets by the state. The people were very rude and disrespectfull to me claiming I could not have a cat because I abused my pets by forcing them to be declawed. Which I replied it was my family and not My decisions. Then they discriminated my 16 year old cat saying that i wasnt allowed to have a cat because she was really to old for the kitten to play with even though in nature older cats who may not care for other cats have taken kittens under their wing to care for. I had a couple back and forth emails with the organization making a point that they discriminated against me getting a service cat to love and nutrue they admitted i had rights but said I was still abusing the cats. They told me to stop contacting me after i gave a really compelling argument that spaying and nuetering the cat is still forceably taking something away from the kittens. That and that the owner made the cat i was looking into sick. They then sent me a website to try to educate me that I was wrong I was not. I had no intenet of getting the precious animals I had declawed just to look into alternatives. They also were going to force me to buy a second cat. I truly think some kind of legal action should be taken against this company because its full of hypocrits. I have never heard of people refusing to adopt to a disabled adult who is in desperate need to adopt a service pet. Nor i have read many of the reviews claiming how cruel and munipulative this group is. Do not buy from them all they will do is try to take action against you and make you feel horrible for what ever care you will provide for the pets. read more

My husband and I caved to our 14 year old daughter to go look at the cats @ the Walnut Creek Petco. My 14 year old took off to look at the cats at one end while my husband and I were looking at the others. One of the volunteers had apparently asked my daughter if we had a cat. She told the woman that we used to have one but that it had gotten out and we hadn't seen it since. A few minutes later I called my daughter over to look at the kittens in one of the cages. My daughter asked the volunteer if she could hold the kitten. The volunteer promptly told my daughter that the kittens were very skittish and " It is really not a good idea for you to get a cat, you might let it out and kill another cat." This woman just made assumptions based on what a 14 yo told her....she didn't even talk to us first to try to find out more info! (Side note...my husband was the one who let the cat out!!) I don't even know if my cat is was killed or not. I was completely disgusted with the way they talked to my child! While this organization does good things for cats, I WILL not be going to them to look for another cat. They are just plain RUDE!!! If I could give them 0 stars I would. read more
