Super impressed with the vet clinic at the EAST BAY SPCA. Last week saw a Great doctor/dentist who gave thorough explanation of her diagnosis. Vet tech also great at keeping me informed as to progress, details, and expedited blood test, too. Today, i Just dropped off fec. sample to reception and Marina not only expedited, but remembered my name and my cat Onyx's name, too!! Sheesh, I can't remember what I had for breakfast! And she must see dozens of people per day. She also explained exactly when test results come back, costs for services VERY CLEARLY all while managing batch of others in waiting area. I came in yesterday, a walk-in, to get vaccines for my newly rescued kitten. I messed up by not knowing the kitten would need to be 8 weeks old in order to receive vaccines. Oh well, my mistake. I asked if they could estimate his age since we were already there, and the lady who assisted with this was very kind and friendly. I appreciated her insight. However, during my visit, the black lady at the front desk was teasing me about coming in with the kitten in an unzipped duffle bag (my carrier from Amazon had not arrived when expected, however I still wanted to take kitty in on my soonest day off, so I improvised best I could, which I believe was reasonable). The whole interaction felt hostile and made me uncomfortable. She made quite a few "jokes" about me bringing the kitten in too young, and saying next time she'll have to call DCFS on me for not having a proper carrier. Again- I was just prioritizing the kitten being seen, I didn't need to feel berated for doing so. She found her banter funny- I tried to laugh it off with her to keep the energy light, but I was very taken aback and didn't feel good about her comments. Mind you, this was spoken very loudly, in front of everyone in the lobby. This same lady then proceeds to rudely yell at another employee, who I believe was new and had forgotten an important step in her training. This again, was loud enough for everyone to hear, and heads turned. Very unprofessional and I'm sure a bit embarrassing for the lady being yelled at. That is NOT how you correct others' mistakes in a workplace. I cannot speak on their pet services, as I did not receive any. But the customer service is very poor. I will not be returning here when it is time to vaccinate my kitten. read more

I love EastBay SPCA - everyone is kind and helpful and they all care and have concerns for your fur babies. They call you back as quickly as they can and their vets are so good at returning calls with any concerns. From vaccines to concerning health issues that are non-urgent - i would highly recommend bringing your furry baby here. My cat has his vaccines and flea meds from here and he has seen a vet and gotten his urine tested to make sure he is in optimal health. They generally have full appointments booked - so it's always good to call as early as possible for prescriptions but they're also kind enough to call another pharmacy if they're unable to fill a prescription ASAP for ya. read more

I am very happy with my choice to adopt my cat from East Bay SPCA a few months ago. Hands down, he is the best cat that I have ever adopted. It seems that my cat thinks that he is my security guard (especially in checking the intent of those in my surroundings). Tried taking my cat to be looked at their vet clinic. spca clinic and adoption are two different places so if you type in spca it will route you to the adoption place. So ended up at the wrong place, tried calling them to let them know that was coming from their other spot and of course no one answers so left a message. Get to vet 8 minutes late, and they wouldn't take us. When booking appointments they make you pay right then and there and it's non refundable. So that was just money and time wasted. It has been a bit since I have used the EBSPCA and that is because I foster failed. The foster program was one of the best experiences I have had. They trained us, matched us with lots of furry friends which gave us lots of experience with breeds we had not had before. Even after we adopted our fantastic pups (fosters 8 and 9) they contacted us to see if we could help with a pup that was afraid of people (which made him a bit difficult to put up for adoption). We brought Petey home and our two dogs showed him how to be a dog that was not afraid and when we returned him he was adopted immediately. read more

I was very disappointed with my experience at the SPCA clinic. I arrived 7 minutes late for my dog's appointment, and they completely refused to see us. What frustrated me most was that there was no clear reminder beforehand emphasizing how strict the late policy was. If I had known being just a few minutes late would automatically cancel the appointment, I would have planned differently. What made the experience even more upsetting was that they still charged me for the appointment, despite not allowing my dog to be seen by the vet. I do feel that this experience was a blessing in disguise meant to save my cat from something worse. I'm writing this to help you if you were referred here or thinking of going here please take the time to read. I was referred here by the humane society of alameda as I'm a student and had no funds for a surgery that my cat needed. As stated in other reviews the vet was extremely rude to me. To set the tone she was white and I am Mexican during this political climate yikes. Nonetheless they were doing me a favor by covering the cost of the surgery for my cat so I voiced my concern and was assured she would not be operating on him. I wanted his blood panel done before surgery although they asked to use a past blood panel of his. I was not comfortable with that. They could not draw blood that day because "he wiggles" When I brought him in for his new blood panel a week later under gabapentin they still couldn't get blood because he was wiggly. This has never happened with any other vet but ok fair. I open the carrier and am hit with the smell of alcohol fumes as he is licking himself. I reach down and he is drenched. He is drenched in alcohol from chin to nearly belly and front arm to front arm as if someone poured a bottle of alcohol on him. I take him out of the carrier bc the fumes were so bad. I'm told not to do that but I do it to help him they escort me into a room to wash him. I wash him 2-3 times w soap and water and he still reeks. They assure me it's safe for him and he can lick it. I look it up and it is in fact not safe so in case my cat dies I have them write out that they used alcohol on him but they won't say how much or that it's not toxic. They then say it's "vet alcohol". The manager refuses to speak w me because she's busy. I get him home his meow is raspy likely bc they damaged his trachea and he starts vomiting I then get a text I'll attach but it's basically them lying to cover their behind and saying that "they won't cover me financially if he is poisoned" LOL THANKS!!!! Please I know we all fall on hard times but avoid this place if you can. Our animals lives are worth so much more, crowd fund go to pet advocate look for grants ANYTHING this place is classist, racist, and to be quite frank they will lie to your face about your animals well being which is very very scary Edit : I was also told they were trying to draw blood from the chest which is pretty shocking as well considering my research says this should only be preformed if the cat is under anesthesia read more

We got our dog Deenie (formerly known as Dinah Marie) from here. The process and everything was very easy to adopt a dog and the staff were really helpful. She was part of the second chance dogs, since she is 11. It's been 6 months since we got her and we cannot be any happier. On adoption day, we arrived and told them we wanted to see her, and waited in the lobby until they brought her out. We got time to walk her around their yard and also to introduce her to our dog. I felt like we had a ton of time to get to know her, and didn't feel rushed at all. They were very nice about us also going to the Dublin SPCA to see another dog to see which one might be a better fit for our family. We arrived back at the end of the day, signed the paperwork and we were on our way home. I was told to bring the cat in to see if it was chipped. I brought the cat in and was met with friendly welcoming staff. Luckily it was a happy result. The front desk said they would need to reschedule and my appt fee of $60 would be forfeited. They also told me to open the email and read it carefully, as there's no grace period mentioned. If you get here at 10:01 for your 10 o'clock appt, you are late and will lose your deposit. It never occurred to me SPCA would be money grabbing like other for profit business. My two dogs have both participated in dog classes, ranging from basic oedience, to reactive dogs I, and Cool, Calm, Collected. Their instructors and assistants/volunteers do a good job helping a wide range of dogs get stronger in certain areas and behaviors. They have a decent sized classroom that can accomodate a bunch of dogs. Shoutout to instructor Minda which our dog Kobe has taken her classes a couple times. Like with most things, what you get out of it is a product of what you put in, so dog classes are only effective if owners train and practice with their dogs between class sessions, and some of the trained behaviors will only stick if owner continue the training. I don't have experience with their adoption center but know there's a high need for pet fostering or adoptions. They also accept donations (pet food and supplies, even towels, which you can drop off at the center during business hours). Keep it up, Oakland SPCA. read more

Wow, I was so upset with myself today for letting my gps take me to the wrong location that I was 8mins late and they would not see my kitten, that I've rescued from male cats trying to mate with her so young, and I'm trying to be a good community citizen and spend out of my own pocket to nurse this kitten back to good health. After reading many fur parent concerns about how they treat their customers, unfortunately I'm happy to know I didn't just have a bad day because of their customer service. Worse service I've gotten. The black lady in the front was super hostile. She had attitude for no reason when I came in with paperwork saying what the other SPCA i adopted my cat from recommended dates for the vaccines he has left to get. She kept says who's they when she could've gotten up her chair to see the paperwork I was trying to show her. I come in to PAY for vaccines not to ask for anything free from HER. Hello I'm so sorry to have to write this for you but to let others know this company is a private own, not the real SPCA that used to be there, they're using their name. I took my dog there for red spots all over him and large bumps on him. But what they wanted to do get a blood test or urine test a sample and which when she took a culture she dropped the plate then picked it back up off the floor and didn't even try to get another one. Then I'd be gone I tried to explain the game what was going on with him and she interrupted me saying just a minute I'll get to what you want to say and just a second wish you never did she actually gave me some medicine for the red spots she didn't really say what they were said they might be an allergic reaction and she would let me know so anyway she had me leave but she gave me all these things to try to get feces sample of my dog when it's had a poop to bring back to her and a urine sample to charge me dang there $400 for this visit but still never saw the problem of what was going on with my dog so I was very disappointed she only gave me the medicine that was upsetting his stomach which cleared it up which I found out was actually really kind of simple that I could have done that she could have explained that to me but she didn't. After a day or so I actually had to call her back to ask her about the allergies that my dog was suffering from which was the fleas he was allergic to the fleas I asked her about chewable flea medicine which she did not suggest for me to use so my dog still will suffer from the flea bites so I paid $400 $300 $400 but I will not I will not go back to that SPCA in Oakland. I found a new Veterinary service with my dog had the exact same issue I took them to that vet which he immediately knew that my dog was suffering from allergic advice from the fleas and had me change the flea medicine that I was using Frontline to a chewable he treated my dog for the infections are the allergies cuz he was just red all over the place, I have a white dog. The new veterinarian treated my dogs infection real quick with a shot then gave me home medicines which I use properly and he also changed my dog flea medicine from Frontline to a chewable and since then I have had no problem with my dog flea allergies since we changed to the chewable. The black lady in the front the rudest lady ! The first time I came in 2/24 she already had a negative vibe about her . Now today I come in to pick up my dogs ashes , I was under the impression that what we paid for was the ashes and the paw print . I proceeded to go back inside the office to ask about the paw print keep sake and she looks in the system and she proceeded to say you didn't pay for that and she basically told me yeah remember you and your mom were very indecisive and corrected her and said you mean grieving . Want to let everybody know that the SPCA is designed to help people and to be affordable-- they get donations that could have helped me. Also a friend of mine who was helping me because I don't have a car get the dogs to their appointment. Got a flat tire. She substantiated the black tire, the flat tire, but still, I was not able to receive a refund for this hardship and my deposit was lost for one of my dogs. When we substantiated the accident with a receipt from the person who fixed the car tire and sent it into the manager, the manager politely declined and said that it would've had to been that I was in the hospital in order to receive a refund for my deposit. Been coming here for years, but hadn't been here for the last 3yrs. Prior to the pandemic, the service was professional and good. The Veterinarians are always nice. Fast forward to today, I have to say, I'm disappointed with some of service. I check-in 15 minutes before the appointment. I was told: "you're a bit early but I'll check you in. You can wait in your car and someone will be out." 12 minutes after the appt time, the VA (Anastasia was her name, I think. The chunky unhappy latina female) bellowed from the walkway for me to come-in, then she walked off. Her tone was curt and belittling the entire visit. Since i was there to have my mom's dog get the care he needed, i didn't challenge her attitude. I'm a first time puppy owner because of this place. He's sweet and a little bite-y but that's okay. He's being trained to be the best of dogs. The facility was clean with people that really cared about the guy. He was a little nervous but quickly warmed up. They gave me the rundown on how trained he was which was nada. He now has a somewhat consistent 6 tricks and potty trained (sorta) after a week. They told me he was a little skittish and needs help with confidence which I'm trying to help build everyday. What I like about this place, is they have guides for you as soon as you adopt them, some basic things to look out for and resources so you have some basic knowledge that your life will be changed for the life of this pup and hopefully forever. When I got there, the staff was extremely transparent and helpful, and I knew that I would not be able to take on the responsibility of having that senior dog. Instead, they spent a considerable amount of time explaining the personality, needs, and pros of each dog I asked about. After quite a bit of time of me asking questions and the staff giving helpful information, I settled on my dog Spencer (formerly Zorro). Before sending us off into the sunset, they gave us plenty of advice and handouts on helping him settle into our home after spending time at the shelter. One of the worst experiences I've ever had with & in a business and the worst Yelp review I've ever had to leave right here. ALL front desk personnel ..And some of the nurses are consistently rude as can be! I've called & been in there many times and it's always the same attitude. If you ask any questions about your pet because you're trying to learn what you need for your animal they give you attitude, if you call they don't answer, and many times it takes very long to get an email, if you even get one back at all. My animal and myself were completely stressed out just walking into this place and/or simply trying to get a hold of someone. I've never had to put up with so much attitude and rude employees at any business I've ever been to. And, I could see by many of the other Yelp reviews that I'm not the only one. This place could really use some help and to think that we are supposed to be donating to this place ..And this should be one of the places we feel extremely comfortable at because we are taking our loved animals there. For future clients, ask what the total will be AFTER the deposit. They provide misleading information. The deposit does NOT go towards the procedure. It is an additional charge on top of what is being done. I schedule an appointment with them to put my dog down. Due to being unemployed, I could not take her to her regular vet as it was double the cost. When I called to inquire about pricing, I was informed the "total would be $374". I was asked to deposit $60 to reserve the appointment. When I was called again, I asked about the "total cost," I was once again $374. When I was there, I inquired about the "total cost" before the procedure was done, and one last time, I was told $374. I left a card on file and advised them to run the card as, due to the situation, I didn't want to sign any additional paperwork. Upon receiving my invoice through email, the total for the procedure was $433.13, which includes an extra $60 for an office visit. Being in the healthcare business, I understand there may be an office visit cost, which I have no problem with; my issue and the reason for the two stars is the misleading information and the surprise billing total. read more
