Awwww, Forklift, it's been like trying to start a fire with wet matches. Last three times I've been in, has been this way, you're not getting the great stuff. Tie in with just ONE estate sale jobber and take their stuff by picking it up to cleanout. No drivers? No trucks? Why are you paying for a truck anyway? Truckers use computers in their cabs to find jobs so they don't drive home empty. Those are the people who can get goods to your location. Try it, at least. You're not getting the good stuff I see left on curbs in NW. Your stuff is dull and uninteresting these days. Aren't there some craftspeople who would want to work in your space for cheap booth rental? They could teach a class and do double duty for CF. When I was there, gag-me-gold ...couch and chair being put out would be an embarrassment to leave for a curb pickup...ruins your cred'. And please, the last three times I've been there, I went sailing right past Buchannon. If they don't let you put up an arrow or a sign, maybe construct a planter box out of landscaping ties, something to show where the turn is. No helium balloons. read more

Prices are quite high here if you're looking to repurpose. Many things are close to retail for a new item...before you repurpose. They have a good selection, but you really have to search for decent deals. They are selling reclaimed windows (not refurbished just ratty old single pane windows) for ~$100/each. Beat up vintage rakes and garden tools that are vintage but not antique go for almost twice the price of new ones at Lowe's. I'm obviously in the wrong line of work. I'm not sure what the proceeds go to, but I'm sure the people that own and run it are paid very well since they get everything they sell through donations. Second Chance in Baltimore is equally as high, and they get everything for free too. If they truly cared about saving things from the landfill and raising money, they would price things lower for higher inventory turnover...they'd sell a lot more items for sure. The bright side is the staff is pretty friendly. Also, you need to visit the two small shops out front. They have reclaimed items that have been repurposed or refurbished. Charlie at Decorative DeZign Interiors makes amazing black walnut desks and tables and has a great selection of vintage and antique furniture at excellent prices. read more

This is a really great concept for a business but I question it's management. We spent a couple hundred here one weekend on various things. One of the tools we bought turned out to be defective. We brought it back within the return period, naturally forgetting the receipt, and were given a nasty attitude from the manager when we asked if there was anything we could do. Granted, we were technically in the wrong but for a "community" organization I wasn't expecting the unhelpful and rude treatment. Even if they didn't keep records of purchases like the Community Forklift, any other local hardware store would work with you in a situation like this (or at least be sympathetic and not combative). We left the tool and walked out of the store for the last time. This would have been a bit more understandable if their prices were a bit more reasonable but you're paying a premium here for anything except raw materials. I felt nickel and dimed here on my first visit and browbeaten on my second. read more

Agree with the others that this place was better before they started attempting to maximize profit. A lot of the prices are totally ridiculous--the last 4-5 times I've come here I've left empty handed and annoyed. I don't get how this can possibly help them, since in many areas there are piles and piles of junk that looks like it's barely been touched (totally covered in dust). This place is awesome! I cannot wait to come back to begin my next refurbishing project. This place was full of junk and lots of treasures! There is a cool antique-y department behind the cashier area...from kitchen items from the early 1900s to old school milk cartons but, its VERY pricey! If you have time, be sure to come by and do some browsing inside and outside. I found a cute cabinet with a granite top....it just needed a sexy coat of paint and some new hardware...now its my bar! The entrance is a but tricky to find....Park in the lot across from the building and walk up the driveway toward the back to enter the store. An interesting salvage store for a good cause, Community Forklift appears to have a great following. On a rainy Sunday mid-morning, this place was packed with people and families of all backgrounds looking for a deal. My husband and I found out about CF from their booth at H St festival a few weeks prior, and decided to check it out (as we are always looking for great ways to improve the aesthetics of our old DC house at a good price). We were a bit overwhelmed by the never-ending selection, but underwhelmed with the quality of items. Some things seem to be worth the drive here: neat vintage decor items (stained glass windows, copper pots, metal grates, etc), some good work tools, and - for those who know what their doing - construction and plumbing materials. True, there are some beautiful items, such as gorgeous granite slabs for the kitchen - but there doesn't seem to be complete sets of materials (or enough for a whole room). The kitchen cabinets were outdated (and some even visibly damaged) and the appliances - good grief - I wonder how many of them could actually work. Maybe someone out there wants a vintage 1940's Norge oven, but I'm not sure I'm one of them. Like many people have mentioned, the prices can seem ridiculous (like $40 glass doorknobs?!) while others seem quite reasonable. I guess if you are doing some major home repair, you might want to at least put CF on your list of options. read more

They have a lot of good old stuff--though also a lot of junk. It's the kind of place you have to go frequently if you're looking for a specific thing. Unfortunately the prices on a lot are just too high. They get everything donated--including from us!--and yet still they seem overpriced. I think it should be more of a community turnover bin, but instead it seems like they're just price gauging DC folks. I used to go here a lot, but lately the prices seem to be going higher and higher. Ron at the Brass Knob warehouse was much cheaper. Last weekend I stopped in to check prices on transoms and brick. I was surprised at the high prices and decided since I was already on the Northeast side of DC to check out Baltimore. I discovered the Second Chance Architectural Salvage Warehouse in Baltimore. It's actually 3 HUGE warehouses! I ended up buying several transoms at 20.00 a piece, old shutters for my house at 15.00 each and bricks for 50 cents each!!! From now on unless I am really short on time, I'll pass on Community Forklift and head north to Baltimore for better variety and much better prices. read more

If you own an old house like I do, this place is a godsend. Cheap, accessible, friendly, with many items that you can't even locate in a modern hardware/home improvement store. This is a great place to come to get functional equipment. Need a length of hose? Old garden tool? Spreader? Gutter? Some tiles? This is a great place to get raw or gently used (or sometimes heavily used) equipment for way less than it would cost at somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot. And some thing, like vintage radiators, you can't really find anywhere else. Beacuse of the secondhand nature of the items, it can be a bit hard to find exact items (it's a good thing to do to come and browse) - so if you're looking for exact screws or a certain paint color or something, go elsewhere. But for finding what you need for a DIY project (or to get inspiration for one period), Community Forklift can't be beat. read more

You can find just about anything your looking for to repair or upgrade your home. After all everything in the entire place have been freely donated by Godly people. However, this place is strictly run as a big money making business. They do not permit price haggling nor the return of items sold. Go there with a mindset that you are there just to admire the antique goods. The last thing you want is to get duped, conned, and bamboozled. I came here for a networking event but had a chance to peruse the warehouse as well as get a private tour. I love everything about this place. It's a thrift store, it's a DIYer's dream, it's giving back to the community. The only thing I'd say I don't like about Community Forklift is that it's so far away from my house! They have everything you could ever imagine for your home - toilets and tubs in a rainbow of colors, light fixtures, doors, salvaged wood, furniture, even door knobs. If you're looking to repurpose, this is definitely the place for you. I love this place. 1) I'm fixing up an old house. New materials look...new. Old materials fit right in. And, any old materials I remove and won't need anymore, can go for someone else's benefit. Like my old clawfoot tub. 2) I can afford the stuff here. A little dirty, a little random, you have to keep your eyes peeled for that great deal...but you get that great deal. *Just* enough composite decking (like Trex) for the tiny deck we were refurbing...and just at the right time. Bullnose tile in a retro color for 10 cents a piece instead of $1 for white at Home Despot. 3) Quirky stuff. Again...old house. Sometimes the spaces aren't quite...standard. No problem! 24" wide doors, 71" tall doors, etc...I guess my problems have mostly been with doors, but they have other non-standard sized stuff. I found *just* enough 2 1/2" hexagonal tile for the basement bathroom - granted, I had to count just to be sure - but it would've cost 5 times as much for neat stuff like that new! 4) Constantly evolving. The first time I came here the yard was full of cast iron (enameled) tubs. Another time a tile store went out of business and there were boxes upon boxes of gorgeous floor tile. If you visit frequently enough, and keep your eyes peeled, you can remake your whole home...just need some storage space! 5) There are some things that are always here, and pretty consistent - window sashes and unhung doors, paint, hardware, vanities and sinks and toilets. They might be picked over, but you know they're there. When I discovered that a toilet had to be replaced right away, I went and got one for $5...and it didn't matter that it was a funny color or old or needed a new flapper, because it only had to make it 6 months until we renovated the bathroom anyway. 6) Staff is fantastic. You can get on a list for "if a high tank toilet walks in the door" or "let me know when such and such brings in last years colors" or whatever. Ruthie tweets interesting finds, and it's gotta be the best use of twitter ever...I can call and ask, and hurry on down after work. "Oh, you have a bunch of landscaping materials? I'm in the middle of a landscaping project! I'll be right over..." 7) Accessibility. It's a big scary world improving your home on your own...and they've done their best to make it work for you. Yes, you have to load your own purchases - but they have a big bay door and you can back right into the yard to do it. Don't have the van or truck today? They'll hold for 24 hours, and store things you've bought for 2 weeks. The warehouse is cold in the winter and hot in the summer - but they have hot cocoa and coffee and a heating unit at the desk, or coolers of water and fans. Borrow a tape measure at the desk, pay with cash or credit card (maybe check, I've never tried). And they let me bring my dog in. :) read more

This place is great. A DIYers dream! If you are looking for antiques or vintage furniture that is ready to go and be displayed in your home immediately, then this place might not be for you. If you like vintage furniture and other unique home items that might need a little (or a lot) of TLC, then this place is totes the place to go. Even if you don't buy anything, this place has the most diverse collection of old American stuff outside of the Smithsonian. It's fun to just go and look and imagine the stories behind all the stuff. The only negative thing I have to say is that their pricing can be all over the place. I'd be curious to know where they come up with their prices from. A positive is that its all for great causes, they keep perfectly good stuff out of landfills, and some community assistance programs. read more

I am all about recycle, repurpose and reuse. We are buying to much junk from China. I was working on a 1900's bridge arm lamp and needed a shade to finish it. I could not find one local that was not made in China and a friend took me here. O MY JUNK!! I spent over an hour wandering around. I found the perfect shade for my lamp and it was on sale that day. I have also gone back and got some great cabinets for the laundry room at the beach house. I agree with others that they are a little pricy for recycled items but I watch the sales and shop. But take a minute, glance around, and you'll see it for the treasure that it is. You know all those pictures you keep pinning on pinterest of painted, reclaimed wood furniture? They have so many practical and/or beautiful things at Very reasonable prices...you'll go to find one thing, and then fall in love with 3 more items that will make your house more like the home you've always dreamed of. (We found a beautiful farmhouse door in the exact shape and size we wanted--$40!! And I almost came home with about 9 other things--scrollwork brass lamps, a mint-green vintage stove/sink set...I cry at night wishing I'd brought them home with us.) And now they have "showroom" of sorts, where someone has lovingly fixed up some real gems for you so that the items are 100% ready for gifting or displaying in your home right now. read more

I can't tell you how happy I was to find an architectural salvage place closer than Baltimore. And with prices, in my opinion, slightly better too! I wasn't to off-put with some of the things I was looking at, although there were certainly prices on others that were high. However, by the looks of the dates on the price tags, you could probably haggle a better deal because I'm sure the staff want to get rid of stuff as fast as they can. I so much fun wandering around this past Saturday, and I came away not only with a couple of things I was actually looking for but also with some new project materials. Plus the fact that they gave me some of those materials for free! The staff were super friendly and courteous. I have to say be prepared to be overwhelmed, but in a good way! I saw so many other things that inspired me to think about other projects. If only I had the storage space! Places like Community Forklift will always get my support, because I feel very strongly about people needlessly throwing things out to collect in landfills. A place such as this provides such a needed outlet for unwanted items, scraps and materials to be given a new life. The Forklife also hosts fun events and informative workshops. Tanglewood, the boutique next door, sells upcycled items from Forklift salvage. They had some really cute stuff in there. read more

If you're on a budget and/or are feeling brave about doing your own home improvement project this is the place for you. It is a hodgepodge of items you can use to repair and/or start a new project. My friend and I bought a replacement (used) door for my place for $35.00 which, saved me close to $165.00. A couple of things to know when your "going in". The volunteers are extremely helpful with locating items. They're also very knowledgably about home improvement. They cannot help you load items into your car, truck and/or van. However, other customers can help you at their loading dock. In other, words try to make friends with the amateur and/or professional handy people who are regularly wondering around Community Forklift. Community Forklift will let you purchase an item; and, let you hold it for up to seven (7) days. This is extremely helpful if you stumble across something that is too large and/or heavy for a car. They do not offer delivery. Community Forklift sells a number of vintage tools and/or mishmash of things you like but didn't think you needed. I love thrift store shopping. I think. The majority of the non-standard home improvement items (e.g. vintage tools, signs, boxes, pianos) are overpriced. However, all the profits from Community Forklift are turned back into the non-profit. I will rationalize the overpriced items are just another way of donating to a great cause. Community Forklift will also accept donations (e.g. paint, tubs, stoves, carpet, furniture) at the "front desk" and/or side loading dock. They can pick up larger items (but limit it to their discretion). I find this extremely helpful when one of my home improvement projects didn't quite turnout how I expected. All donations are all tax deductible. Community Forklift also offers regular sales and/or have special events (e.g. gardening demonstrations, green craft fairs, mosaic workshops) on the weekends. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! As a carpenter/artist/recycler this place is amazing! Honestly a few years ago, when they were little less organized, and maybe a little less popular, they were a little bit cheaper and you could get some amazing finds. This place is still great, and is better organized. Which makes shopping easier, but they tend to ticket a little higher. Yes, there might be a vintage laminate dinette set from the '50s in amazing condition for $300, but you can also get a used closet door for $3. They run specials a lot. Do yourself a favor and try to avoid going on the weekends, it's a mad house. read more

There was a band and wine and hipsters and 40% off blue ticket items. We found a great vintage sink for $35 and strangely enough a brand new $400+ Toto toilet for $75. No not everything here is cheap but many vintage things aren't. The staff is friendly but be prepared to sweat your hair out if you come here. I'll be back to look around. Also, there are great shops directly next to this store. It's a cute quaint crunchy little enclave that kind of typifies Hyattsville. Wow! What an amazing place! I feel so inspired after perusing the current stock. This was our first visit and after reading the yelp reviews, we weren't disappointed. For a Pinterest addict like myself, it's a treasure trove of craft and DIY projects just waiting to be found. A couple tips: Bring gloves in the winter and bundle up. It's COLD in there! If you have little ones, skip the stroller and either wear your baby or utilize one of the shopping carts. It is definitely not a place you want your children to explore. We found a $35 Asko anti-microbial dishwasher, about 10 years old, in mint condition because our home had probably one of the first dishwashers ever made and was used as a drying rack. It worked perfectly. I've found eccentric hardware, i.e. Victorian cover plates, a replacement garbage disposal, antiqued clay brick pavers, among other useful and beautiful treasures. There are always sales, it is SO worth it. Wear your sweater and mittens, it's not heated. read more

This place is awesome!! I have lived 2 miles away from it since 2004 and never knew it existed. We are rehabbing our basement and want to have a barn door thing going on. Our contractor told us about community forklift and we went this morning. We found two solid wood doors that had marbling variations and we loved them. Of course we will sand them and stain them but two solid wood doors for 30 bucks is GOOD with me. I'll go on Amazon and order the hardware. If you do go make sure you bring gloves and wear old clothes, it can get dusty. Also don't forget to bring a tape measure but if you do, they will loan you one in exchange for your keys to ensure you return it. Happy hunting!! read more

Give yourself hours to peruse because you never know what you'll find. They have incredible sales, and even a free section outside. Forklift is seriously committed to saving things from the landfill. It's a lot of fun to walk around here, but I haven't found any deals in a long, long time, if ever really. They have pricing experts on staff and every item is analyzed to get them top dollar. Every time I've bought something here, I feel like I've paid the absolute maximum I'd be willing to pay for that item in that condition. Sometimes I've purchased things that have worked out okay for the price, but in retrospect the risk of it not working out made it dumb of me to buy (we bought used cabinets here for an extensive kitchen reno, and between refurbishment and designing the kitchen around the cabinets vs. the other way around, it was a poor choice). The staff is nice and it's still fun to look, and if you want the odd can of paint or half can of minwax while you're there, the prices are fine for those. For bigger salvage stuff, I'd go up to Baltimore -- more places with a lot more to work with. read more

I love Community Forklift. That said, it's totally hit or miss. I've bought plants here, a waterworks tub (for $59), fixtures, lighting, a cement sink, a cast iron fire engine toy for the kids (much better than it sounds), and random building materials. But then I've gone there looking for specific things (doors, insulation, flooring) and been totally disappointed by selection and prices. So there are deals here, but you have to be patient and be willing to leave with nothing. Only thing that would improve it is good hot coffee for sale (since the warehouse is so friggin cold most of the time). Overall: head here immediately if you are redoing or building a house and can take your time with getting material and finding a serious bargain. read more

I love Community Forklift and visit at least a couple times a month. I learned about the forklift when renovating our house. CF picked up 2 very heavy radiators that our contractor dropped in the front yard. So happy they didn't end up in a landfill. Be prepared to look, this place is full of salvaged pieces. I often come out with nothing, but when we need something we like to stop here before buying new. The carpet tiles were a favorite. I installed 200 sq. ft in my basement for about $300 dollars. Quotes were 4 times as much. Dress appropriately, If you enjoy the hunt you are bound to get dusty, but the payoff is worth it. read more

I used to go here all the time. I'm all about salvage renovation. As a matter of fact my husband and I were the featured article in the Washington Post a little over a year ago about our salvage renovation projects, and we've been invited and have participated in many sustainable home and garden shows. Over the last year we have given so much credit to Community Forklift for their salvage/green concept, but sadly we can't do that anymore. This place used to be a diamond in the rough, but it has turned into an antique priced warehouse. Community Forklift receives donations for free from the community (because those who donate want to make sure their stuff stays out of landfills and they hope their things will find new happy homes with like minded people) unfortunately now Community Forklift sells every donation they receive at a competitive premium antique dealer price. For example a little over a year ago we built a garden retreat out of old wavy glass windows which cost us an average of $20 -$25 each... todays price at Community Forklift (one year later) and those same windows are priced at $108. each, YES, I said ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT DOLLARS each. And in my opinion no used heavily worn door that is made of just wood should cost a whopping $500.00, even if it is barn door size and especially because the door was donated to them. I'm fair minded, so I spoke with one of their managers and apparently there are people in NYC willing to pay these prices, so thats why they do it. Community Forklift now sells items on ebay and etsy for a huge profit, remember they don't buy these item, all the items are donated in hope they find new happy homes with salvage minded people... Community Forklift somewhere over the last year has lost their way and is no longer the salvage renovation /green store (unless you're talking green as in Benjamin's) they once were . Unfortunately Community Forklift is now an "antique" or "vintage dealer" where you can find very few deals. Im so saddened by their change of heart. Bottom Line: Donated items resold at high Antique prices, and NOT at the thrift store prices that they once were known for... read more

I wanted to donate a lot of materials being removed from my house for remodeling. I contacted Community Forklift and described all the materials and they told me what they'd accept. Everything was neatly stacked in my garage awaiting them. First they delayed pickup because their truck broke down. Then they cancelled pickup because their truck broke down. Then they wanted to come Thanksgiving weekend, when I'd be away. Then they couldn't come for more than another week. Finally, when they arrived, they refused to take half of what they had agreed to take because it had been disassembled and practically destroyed it by tossing it aside. They put the wrong drawers in one cabinet, then refused to take it because they were crooked. They left my garage a mess. They were rude and treated me like some scofflaw and not a donor. I will never donate to them again. Their response to my review, which took almost 2 months to come up with, is inaccurate and somewhat nonsensical. I did not expect them to "accept donations of anything [they] can't resell," but neither did I expect them to manipulate my items so that they were unsellable. I didn't leave anything for them that was "damaged when removed by [my] contractor." I didn't leave anything that was damaged, period, and if it had been, how would they know my contractor did it? Any damage done was by THEIR people, who, as described above, tossed items around and put the wrong drawers in, only to claim they didn't fit. Well, duh. read more

I realize this is all for a very good cause, and perhaps I am too hasty in my review, seeing as how it was my first (and probably last) visit, but I have to go on record with this one...I believe in their good mission to recycle, but the inventory here was atrocious. I have visited other building/salvage shops in the area, like Habitat for Humanity in Alexandria and Gaithersburg, and this place was a dump. Even on a bad day, the two aforementioned places had decent offerings. Seems to me that the builders/contractors have wisened up to the idea that they can get a tax write-off for disposing their junk, instead of paying the fee to dump their stuff at the local landfill. I am no princess, and I came dressed for the occasion, but I was expecting to see a rat scurrying through the piles of junk scattered throughout the warehouse. Also, if you're like me and have an issue with walking into dusty environments, bring a painter's mask for your nose and mouth. I'm giving it 2 stars b/c I believe in the whole recyling thing, but I recommend this place be more selective in what it accepts. read more

Community Forklift is a 40,000 square foot home improvement thrift store promoting the reuse of building materials, appliances, paint, fixtures, and much more, preventing these things from ending up in a landfill. It's a valuable resource for anyone redoing their house, whether you want to buy something here or donate your old materials (and get a tax write off!). They have a huge selection of anything you can think of for a home (front doors, chandeliers, toilets, granite countertops) that has either been donated or salvaged. They state their prices are 40-80% below retail. Deep pockets? No sense of the value of a dollar? Then this is the place for you. Never heard of this place before this mornings Washington Post. Came in to help kill time before today's game. It's big and they have a lot to go through,( thus the 3 stars) so set aside some time. The prices are unrealistic. Am in the parking lot right now. I was just reading other Yelp reviews and had to add my own. I found a stove I was interested in, stopped a passing employee to ask about the price and was told "All items are tagged with a price and all sales are final" To which I replied " Drop it by five bucks so I fell like I'm getting a deal" After a brief stare the person spun around and walked away. There's so much cool stuff here! For all the categories of things, it's fairly well organized. You can find claw-foot tubs, antique stoves, any kind of furniture you could think of, paint, flooring, you name it. My biggest issue is the price. I understand that there are programs that are funded through the store, but many of the items seemed to be priced way higher than they need to be. I kept flipping over price tags and then slowly backing away in protest. I do think it's worth it to come out and see what they have though. I had a lot of fun poking around the displays and digging through the bric-a-brac. Just know that I would consider this place to be the "Anthropologie" of thrift stores. It's marketed to folks who like to spend a lot of money to look poor. read more
