If you're looking for materials to restore or repair an old house, there's nowhere better than Community Forklift. I have no idea where you could find more vintage radiators in one place, or where else you could buy a vintage glass doorknob that perfectly matches my 1925 bungalow. It isn't dirt cheap, but you can get a good value for your money, items are generally in pretty ok condition (and priced better if they aren't), and given the nature of the business, the warehouse is AMAZINGLY well organized and navigable. They generally have a great selection of appliances at very reasonable prices, which I wish I could take advantage of, but unfortunately they don't test them beforehand (except to confirm that they turn on), and it is just too much risk and expense to hire someone to pick up and deliver a new (used) oven, only to find it doesn't work and now I have to hire someone to take it back to return it. If I were stronger (and therefore able to move my own appliances) I'd be all over these appliances tho. Pro tip: if you are going in the fall or winter, bring a warm coat. If you're going in the summer, be prepared to sweat! This is an actual warehouse so it is pretty much the temperature of the outdoors, sometimes worse. read more

I'm a fan of this place because you can find several good items for your home. We bought doors for less than $20. We have also found ceramic tiles that were priced VERY well. I have come across some items that I felt were too pricey for being used, but the majority of the things are priced fairly. If you love doing DIY projects this is definitely a must check out place. read more

Once Upon A Time. . . I'm a local remodeler and I've donated literally thousands of dollars worth of NEW materials to the CFL in past years. The original mission of the forklift was to recycle, re-use, "keep it out of the landfill". I believe in this also and have used lots of recycled materials in my jobs to help the environment and add re-purposed flair to a job. I've been saddened by the changes over the last couple of years,(seems $$$ motivated) and they culminated with my last visit. I purchased a ceiling fan. It didn't have a price and Dan (Most helpful) gave me a price of $20. Seemed fair as it was missing parts and I would have to do a lot to get this ceiling fan up and running. Jim the "Founder/Chief" of Forklift was nearby and asked how much I was quoted for the fan. I told him. He walked away and muttered "That's too cheap". ! A bit too loud JIM ! That's a Crappy Crappy Crappy thing for you to say and me (a client) to hear. Just in case you want to know, I had to perform the following to get the fan in order: 1. Complete disassembly, cleaning, and lubrication. The fan was filthy. 2. Hunting down for missing parts. Sounds easy, however there are many, many manufacturers and this was a no name model. 3. Hang and blade re-balance. It came with bent blade arms. I had to unbend and re-balance the blade arms because of a hard wobble. Again I'm a remodeler, so I have the skills to to perform the work. In the future tho I will have to think twice about going to the forklift for used materials. So sad. . . . read more

Ouch! The prices are so high on most of the items. This stuff was donated to them, perhaps if they understood that when your prices are realistic, your merchandise moves and then there wouldn't be junk stuffed everywhere. It is interesting to look at but a bit of a fire hazzard, not to mention I kept thinking about lead paint particles and who knows what else in the air. The antiques they have are priced at or above what I find at antique stores. This makes it easy because I will continue to support my antique dealers to help keep them from needing "hand outs" because they have gone out of business. Also it appeared that there were personal employee items mixed in with the stuff for sale. For example an old fan- it was on a shelf, not plugged in and belonged to an employee. What is up with that? $25 for an old folding chair? Seriously? Perhaps if I ever need a piece of old wood to match for a repair I will be back, but other than that, once was more than enough for me. read more

If you like to DIY this is the place for you. I went here at the end of our renovation to find some tile. We couldn't quite find enough but there was plenty of tile. We also got a bunch of cute cast iron ovenware. Our contractor also bought a door from here and turned it into a floating vanity and it looks amazing. read more

Took a long drive to check out Community Cash Lift- we were shocked by extremely high prices. I'd prefer to shop on U St. and save myself the trek. I've been going there for a couple of years and bought a approximate total of $3. However wanted to buy a kitchen. I never seem to get there at the right time for great deals. So today I was looking for railings for porch and inside steps. I found both however they weren't any prices on the items. I asked at 5:40pm, they since it was 20 min till close won't be able to price these items. And this was the supervisor. So I'll check Habitat for the near future. This place IS as good as it gets. This is for those who have an idea, vision and can work on repairing classic antiques or want a new challenge or accent in their home. It's very well organized even if you have to dig through some sections. The displays and amount of people coming in and out of the space is a lot, less than IKEA, but it can still be a bit overwhelming even in such a huge warehouse. It's a bit tricky to find since it's off the beaten path & train tracks, but there's also a really good feel to the property. I can't wait to come back for more! read more

Been there a few times. If you're looking for cheap cabinets, some wood flooring and maybe a granite counter top, it's OK. Everything else is ridiculously high priced for what they offer. I can but toilets, tubs, etc at Lowes for less money and the rest at the many yard sales I've been to. read more

Cool place to get odds and ends for your DIY Pinterest projects! Some of the stuff is super cheap. But some stuff is overpriced. Overall though you can get some great deals and finds. A little dusty and rustic - so bring some hand sanitizer if you don't like rummaging. read more

I want to love love love this place because of all of the amazing treasures they have, but it is just so crazy overpriced. I went in looking for old butcher block counter top and was so excited to find exactly what I had been searching for. I took my find to the register only to find out that the counter top -- which wasn't in great shape by any stretch of the imagination - was $110 for the slab. I just couldn't justify purchasing it for the price when I could get the exact same thing in brand new condition from Ikea just down the road in College Park for $10-$20 more. I really admire what they are doing, but price stuff for what it is -- salvaged materials! I'm glad it's not ending up in a landfill, but it's also not gonna land in my home at their overpriced rate. Stick with the local Habitat Restores -- their prices seem far more reasonable. It's a hike for me to get to Community Forklift, so I'll unfortunately have to think twice about going because of the cost factor. All that being said -- great atmosphere, great employees and an all-around neat place to go. Just don't go looking for a bargain because you probably won't find it. read more

I was at this place around 2011 and the items were at acceptable levels for used, old, sometimes battered items. Most recent visit I found items to be very high-priced as if they were collectible! Insane! Who would pay such high prices for leftover, used stuff? It's a long bus ride for and I am not going to waste my time going there ever again. read more

Went there today, great place for some unusual finds, like bowling ball alleys and other stuff. I did find their prices on the high side, however they were having a sale so it off set the cost. They are dog friendly as well, I brought my Rottweiler and no problems. They have the items organized and neat. Staff seemed really helpful and friendly. read more

We visited Community Forklift to find materials to build a new desk in our guest room/office. The staff were really helpful, knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. It was a great experience -- we created a new desk from a door, an antique phone stand and a freestanding kitchen cabinet, and we had a Sunday afternoon adventure. Better yet, they offered cookies and coffee at the front of the store. You've got to check this place out. This is "reduce reuse recycle" at its best. read more

For a DIYer and creative types, this place is amazing. I already can't wait to go back, plus I regret not picking up a few things that I loved. However, the employees are less than stellar. We asked a guy to get a light fixture down and he acted like it wasn't his job...maybe, it isn't, but then let me know who to ask for help. Or don't hang the fixtures up if you don't want to assist. Then, the same young man tried to get us to pay twice because he didn't remember ringing us up. Did the guy who DID ring our stuff up say anything? No. And he was, literally, standing a foot away from the other guy. So, not until Guy 1 got an attitude and said "I'm going to need money for that." (For the second time!!) did Guy 2 speak up and say that we had already paid. If the employees are unable to keep track of who has paid and hasn't, then they need to change the setup. While Guy 1 was harassing us someone could have walked out without paying. All in all an awesome place, so I will definitely be a regular, but will just make sure I keep my receipt in my hand and, maybe, bring my own ladder (kidding). read more

ok this place the perfect place for a person like me who believes in repairing instead of replacing! I find the rarest things here I revamped a rusted out fire pit with scrap metal bars I found out in the surrounding yard and I get spray paint there for a buck. my kiddos love this place even thou it is not meant for children at times this place has family geared events like Pirate day and if you dressed up like a pirate you had a chance to win Community Forklift bucks I so was a shoe in but I really felt bad for the older lady so I let her have the prize LOl!! bur for sure check out this place before heading to the retail stores I feel its better to upcycle then to buy brand new oh also I brought this establishment several new businesses any they thank me all the time my hubby even replaced all the Berber carpeting in his conference room for a fraction of what they would have spent at Lowes or Home Depot read more

I ran across CF while doing a Google search on granite scraps. Boy howdy, does this place have them! CF also has just about everything else imaginable. I was overwhelmed at times walking around and was cursing myself for not wearing boots (seems like you could step on a nail easily there). Some places in the warehouse are a little dark so you might want to bring a flashlight, too. As someone else mentioned, this is a great place to go for all of those DIY projects you see on Pinterest. You can even buy cheap paint there. However, it seemed like some things were a bit overpriced. $5-$6 a piece for drawer pulls? $10 for a crappy paper towel holder? Some of that stuff you can get cheaper at Home Depot. The antique area was disappointingly overpriced, as well. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to go back and pick around next time I have a project. It's a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. read more

This place is the best! You really need to have an idea of what you need, and want because it can get overwhelming and expensive if you just browse and pick up random things. But, with a clear idea of how much you are willing to pay and what you want to make out of it this is an ideal place to go! Make sure to look through the sections. The perfect place to find real antique parts and fixtures for your home. I was looking for old radiators to replace damaged ones in my Dad's house. Community Forklift had what I needed at a fraction of the cost. I bought 5 radiators all in good shape. I'll have to do a little refinishing but I'm very happy with my purchase. Hats off to the staff who were fast and super efficient. If you're looking for stuff for your home and don't mind doing the work this place is for you. I have some DIY projects that I've put on the back burner for some time due to work, being busy, etc. My parents suggested I come here to find some of the items that I could use in my projects so I thought I'd give this place a try. They have some really cool and interesting things! They had granite counter tops outside that ranged in color and size. Inside, there were tons of doors to choose from that ranged from barn doors to pantry doors to grand entrance doors. They had cabinets that came in sets, sinks and toilets that you could use or even a vintage oven that looked like it came from the 1970s. I found a hammered copper sink to use in a bathroom and a cylindrical sink to use in making an indoor herb garden. I honestly just had fun walking around looking at all the different things they had to offer. On the weekend, they had a class that taught you how to use an old door to make a book case too. So if you're in the market for a used house item or if you want some inspiration for something you saw on Pinterest, check this place out! read more

I have been going here since day 1. I made a lot of donations of really good stuff like new Pella doors from model homes that I could not use. I buy what I consider to be a good deal. But beware. Recently I paid for merchandise and when I returned to pick it up it was stolen. Go figure! Someone walks out with a 6 ft tall x 5ft wide double-door commercial refrigerator and no one sees anything? Yeah, right. They have put forth no real effort to look through receipts if it got re-sold or review the cameras. This smells bad! Or maybe there is some "good old boy" stuff going on. The prices have gone up 4 to 5 times the price what they use to be. As a landlord/rehabber, I come here only for used wooden doors, radiators, toilets, lighting fixtures, and the odd 5-gallon bucket of paint. They are the premier source in the region for the former two types of items; I have never seen a better selection. Within the last 5 years or so, even as their stock has become better-organized, their kitchen cabinet sets, appliances, fireplace surrounds, all the antique/one-offs, and much of the rest have gotten way overpriced, which I believe ultimately damages CF's mission. Bring a flashlight and, if it's a month with an "r" in it, a coat and gloves. read more

Be very careful of Decorative Dezign-- we paid 1/2 for a table-- it did not work and he never returned to fix it. Took our money and left us with a piece of wood not fastened on to a table. useless. be warned! take your money and run! read more
