We have had the most amazing experience working with CAF! We initially became volunteers to foster (which was very simple), then we connected with our foster dog and were able to adopt. We adopted two of our cats from Companion Animal Foundation about 10 years ago and just adopted two more kitties a couple days ago and we couldn't be happier with our experience. They have the sweetest kitties because they treat them with so much love and they get lots of attention and socialization from the staff, volunteers and the community. These people love animals and it shows! Kim knows her stuff and she has such a helpful and sweet nature about her. It's comforting to know I have a "go to" person I can ask questions or get helpful advice about my cats who's so knowledgeable about animals and the community. We're lucky to have these kind and caring people at Companion Animal Foundation and I'm so grateful for each of my special little kitties I adopted from these guys. We love their thrift stores (one in Arcata and one in Bluelake) as well! We've found many cool treasures at both their locations. read more

I've made sort of a mission of visiting all the local thrift stores, but hadn't made it out to this one until last week. It sort of felt like two different stores when I walked in. The clothing section seemed well-organized, if a bit pricier than St. Vincent de Paul or Angel's of Hope. I found some cute children's clothing and shoes. On the housewares side, however, things seemed to be all over the place. Random stuff just sitting on the floor, under tables, etc. It seemed like that area could use some major love. Also, the aisles were really small and lots of breakables. Definitely not a toddler-friendly place, unless you stick them in a stroller (they do have signs up regarding this issue). At least I saw the cat I had promised my son we would see! read more

I love this place! They have a "kitten room" and you can go in and sit and play with dozens of kittens. The kittens are up for adoption too, which is great. The staff is all super nice and helpful. The store part is great and they have great items for sale, lots of cool little nick nacks and clothes and kitchen items. I adopted a kitten from here and I had such a great experience! Brutal, my wife and I went in to adopt a puppy, filled out an application and were approved to take him "Oreo" home with us. We returned a week later with Oreo as requested only to have Kim accuse us of starving him. We were there to finalize this adoption and pay the adoption fees. I go in regularly to find VHS movies because it's right around the corner from me. Cons: The place is always a mess and the girls who work there can be kind of icy unless you make them talk to you. Companion Animal Foundation, AKA "The kitten room" Is a great little pet adoption center/thrift store in Sunnybrae. I recently adopted a sweet little kitten from them a few months ago, and couldn't have been happier with their knowledge, helpfulness, professionalism, and overall care for the animals. These people take great care of the pets living in their store, as well as the pets that they have elsewhere in foster care. Adoption fees are reasonable, and generally pay for themselves with all of the discounts and vouchers you get. This is a great place to get a non-human 'companion' for life in Humboldt County, or just come and visit the little pets waiting to be adopted. CAF provides an excellent service to the pets and people of Humboldt County. read more

Often missed being in Sunnybrae this thrift store/pet adoption center is a nice place to shop. They have a decent selection of the usual thrift store faire at OK prices. The staff is helpful and there are usually a cat or two roaming the store to pet. There is a 'kitten room' where you can pet kittens, which is popular. read more

I was so disappointed! Especially since reading all the great reviews! I came in and was NOT ONCE appointed by the three people that worked there. I had to walk by the front desk where they all were about five times, and no one even acknowledged I was even there. It was dirty and smelled terrible. Things were unorganized and seemed to be just thrown around. We won't be back. Darn!! read more

Excellent place to adopt a pet! Great deals on thrift items and wonderful staff. They often rescue cats and kittens from the local shelter, occasionally have a puppy or two up for adoption as well. They are a great place to shop for household supplies and save a bunch of money! Now they have a place in Blue Lake as well. read more

This place has a little of everything, though emphasis may have to be placed on the *little*! Everything is fit in a very small space, and navigation is not for the faint of heart, especially if you walk with a cane like me. That being said, the folks working when we visited were both super kind and helpful... and, rad? If that is still a word, that would be the best way to describe them! Prices are very reasonable, especially given that they have had 25% off sales lately to clear out overstock. I am looking forward to going again, and to donating again to help such a good cause. :) read more

I love this thrift shop for the fact that they help animals and have good prices. It can get a bit stuffy and messy, but it has gotten a lot cleaner in the past few years. I try to donate here first anything that they might be able to sell even though they cannot take a lot of things. The free basket out front is always fun to look through. read more

Went to try on clothes and had things held at the counter. Minutes later I go to pay for my items at the counter and they have sold the other items I picked out from under me!!!! The girl working was too busy chasing a dog around to do her job. Then laughed about it and blamed her boss. This place needs a new system. I understand you can't bring items into the dressing room but they need to figure something out for where the items are being held. Word of mouth and putting them behind the counter is clearly not working. Super disappointed. read more

The thrift store is okay, it is always cluttered and messy. That being said what they do for cats and kittens is amazing. I adopted a kitten Luna from here. She has been an amazing cat who interacts well with new animals and is extremely cuddly. She goes from full crazy cat play mode to instant cuddle, I think this has to do with how they are raise around other animals while kittens with new people constantly coming in to hold them. I highly recommend adopting a cat or dog from here. read more

I LOVE this place! Sometimes I go in just to cuddle the kittens. I've found great dishes, glassware, and a funky teapot in the thrift store, very cheap. One day when I was in I met Kim, one of the directors. She is sooo passionate about what they do, it makes me wish I had more time and money to donate! This is in regards to "Garry's" review which is titled "They won't take adult cats!"....I do not know what was said over the phone with Garry. Everyone I know who has chosen to work or volunteer there has done so out of a love for animals. However, the behavior and attitude of workers cannot be controlled.I have volunteered there off and on for several years. Commercial real estate rates are very high. The adoption room is very small. I'm sure that Companion Animal would love to be able to afford a space with a spacious adoption room and take in every cat who needs a home. I happen to have met and know dozens of adult cats they have taken in. Unfortunately, we get several telephone calls each day regarding cats and dogs who have been abandoned, neglected, and/or abused. We have to ask members of our community to step up and partner with us in addressing the needs of animals; this is how it should be. We all have to put on our Big Boy pants and remember that we are the adults now. read more
