I've been to Compas before, and the food was good, but this time it was sub par. The cook could use a few tips. The service was wonderful though, and I would still probably come back when I'm craving Mexican. The ambiance is a small, family-style, restaurant, with lots of wood furniture. We went there for an early dinner and there was no wait. We were seated immediately, and our server Amanda was friendly and attentive the whole time. She constantly checked on us and refilled drinks without us having to ask. We were brought out chips & salsa almost immediately after being seated. The chips were very fresh and the queso and salsa dip were tasty. I ordered the quesabirria, which came with consume. The beef was very tender and juicy, but there was barely any cheese and the taco could have been fried a bit more in my opinion. The consume was standard. My mom ordered the steak, chicken, and chorizo plate that came with rice. She complained that it was too salty, but instead of sending it back she tried to put lots of lemon juice on the meats to be able to eat it. She did end up telling our server Amanda, who was kind enough to remove it from the bill. Amanda apologized and explained that there was a new chef working that night. The sweet tea was fresh and good. Although our food was mid this trip, I've had some good dishes at Compas before and would still come back to give them a try. read more

Mexican food in Southeast Georgia is, well, let's just say it's challenging...to put it mildly. I've been served some disgusting crap at just about every other Mexican restaurant in Camden and Glynn counties in the short time I've lived here. I'd pretty much given up on there being any edible Mexican food in this part of the state. I was driving around with some company from out of town, and they announced that they were hungry, so I cringed in terror when I realized I was in St. Marys. There really aren't great restaurant or food choices here. I'd remembered that a friend at work told me that Compas had pretty good Mexican food, and I caught myself wondering if there was a "...for southeast Georgia." at the end of his statement. Well, we were close, so we took a chance. The location is a little strange, tucked away in a sprawling, but sparsely populated shopping center. Parking was a breeze, plenty of spaces, so we parked right up front and sauntered on in. We had to wait a minute or two for somebody to greet us at reception area, but that was no big deal, the servers on duty were very busy. We were seated and immediately given menus and asked about drinks. The restaurant was clean and comfortable, and about what you'd expect for a strip-mall restaurant. The menu was quite large, and had just about every favorite Mexican food staple I've known over the years. I opted for the Chili Verde, something of a litmus test for a good Mexican restaurant in my book, and the others in my party opted for standard burrito/enchilada items. Chips and salsa were great, and kudos to them for having nice, big chunks of cilantro in it. Delicious, and very mild. No need to worry about scorching your mouth. The food came out pretty quickly, and I was pleasantly surprised. My Chili Verde was absolutely delicious, and the portion was quite large. I stuffed my face, and took leftovers home for lunch. The other diners with me also reported that their food was quite good. I'm looking forward to trying other items on the menu at Compas. Will probably get chili rellenos next. I know they can't all be winners, but at least there's a place in the county where I know I can get a good Chili Verde that won't make me sick. read more

One star subtracted because of lack of COVID precautions although we are able to eat outside. We are from Texas so are quite picky about our Mexican food. Here the food could hold its own in comparison to what we are used to. The salsa even had fresh onion and pepper pieces but could have been a bit more spicy. My combo of steak chicken and chorizo was good but I doubt the tortillas were hand made. I could be wrong though. The margarita was good the service was fantastic and really I have nothing to complain about except for Covid precautions. I walked into this restaurant and was waiting for the host to seat me. I sort of shrugged my shoulders when he skipped by me for a customer who came into the line after me. He then insulted me and was totally condescending. I was so shocked, I walked out. I've never been insulted by a host or hostess before in my life! I've eaten here before and food is just ok, but not if I'm going to be treated rudely by "the host." I stopped by the other Mexican restaurant and was treated like family! I had a hard time deciding how to review this place. Pros: - Our server was reasonably attentive, and took care of any concerns promptly. - The food portions were generous, and tasted good. Nothing amazing, but on-par and reasonably satisfying. Even though the fajitas missed the mark in presentation (see the 2nd item in the Cons list below), they were still super tasty and came in a very large portion, exceeding what I would expect for fajitas for 2. - Service was quick! - Prices were reasonable. Cons: - Our server was very brusque. Initially, we were pretty annoyed, until we realized that her demeanor was not a good indicator of her overall level of service. - The food was...not what I expected. I ordered the fajitas for two, to share, and what came out was not what I expect when I order fajitas. Instead of chargrilled strips of chicken atop a ped of peppers and onions, we were served a large skillet full of small pieces of chicken intermixed with onions and peppers. While I do enjoy eating the onions and peppers with my fajitas, I am not used to needing to fish small pieces of chicken out of a large mixture, and generally expect larger slices of chicken rather than just random small chunks. - Someone mentioned the restaurant was clean. I disagree. The restaurant seemed like it could do with a good cleaning. Bottom Line: - I would consider going here again if I'm looking for a no-frills dinner that focuses on decent flavor and good portion sizes while compromising on ideal presentation and top-quality food. read more

They put bacon on their tacos with out asking. Also they serve fajitas not really tacos. When I asked for cilantro and onion raw on my taco they charged a 1$ for each little cup. It was just confusing, but I think they cater to the area obviously. read more

The waitress took her time taking our orders, forgot what we were eating/ drinking on multiple occasions, and gave me the wrong order. I asked for the vegetable plate (that includes chicken and cheese dip apparently) and asked her to include the red/ green sauce from the enchilada plates. Food took almost 30 minutes to come out. She brought out a vegetable fajita plate without cheese dip or the extra sauces I asked for. I also order a pina colada and it took almost 20 minutes for her to bring it out. I placed the order by phone and the person taking the order was friendly. Order was 100% correct. All of the food was quite tasty. The burrito was packed with grilled chicken. Chimichanga with grilled steak didn't disappoint either. Just wish the cheese sauce would be served on the side with the burrito as was the sauce on the Chimichanga. The variety of vegetables in the vegetable nachos was outstanding. Again on these serving the nachos separately would improve the experience. This was a take out order and by the time we enjoyed the vegetable nachos there wasn't any crunch to the chip. Also recommend getting the grilled chicken over the shredded chicken. I had the Popeye Lunch Special and a Margarita...I can't say more about how great my food was. It hit every flavor taste bud perfectly. It came with beans and rice. I could tell the cooks didn't follow the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) program (required by the state by the way). My quesadilla was cross contaminated with broccoli that I didn't order. And the shrimp came out cold. Required to be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 and it wasn't even hot to the touch. The service was slow and my waitress was inattentive (and brought out the wrong order for my wife) and didn't check on us at all. Definitely never returning. read more

We have had this a couple times now. I usually get the pollo chorizo. While it was very good the portion of actual meat was lackluster, mostly just sides which I do not eat. If you do not eat a lot of sides or chips make sure you take that into account with your meal because you will have to order more food. read more

I have been here multiple times for both lunch and dinner. It is typically a pretty lively atmosphere and rarely is it empty or slow in my experience. Usually, I am with only one other person when I am there, although sometimes I am alone if I am on an afternoon siesta and am in the mood for a cold drink. The staff has always been great. There was a particular time when I had a to go order that was missing some items, but I called and went in a few days later and they made up for it. That is rare, so I really appreciated it. Once or twice, service has been kind of slow and drinks were not refilled. Again, that is rare. The atmosphere is typical for a Mexican restaurant. Sombreros, pinatas, beer signs and soccer on the TV. Good thing I am usually drinking, amirite? As far as the food goes, it is always good. No complaints. I think they have more than the typical choices of a Mexican restaurant and it all seems to be pretty good. My typical go to is one of the big burritos or the Nacho Libre. It's pretty fine, and a good portion for a meal. I tried the tacos rancheros recently and really liked them. And I recommend the Modelo on tap, with a lime. I think you will really enjoy it if you are in the mood for good Mexican food. If not, they have a good beer selection. So, just get drunk and eat some guacamole (really good!) or queso and chips. read more

Have you ever been blatantly lied to by the menu description? Beware!!! This place was 100x better when it was Peppers. Without the proper management and the "give a s*** factor" standards seem to have plummeted, spiraled out of existence. I ordered the Queso Fundido through door dash. It is described as "Bowl of cheese dip with chorizo, mushrooms and poblano peppers." I received a messy pile of grilled veggies and chorizo with melted shredded mozzarella on top. There are red onions in the mess of cheesy nothing as well. Also, judging by the damage of the styrofoam in the bottom of the container due to hot oils from the chorizo it is safe to assume this shredded mozzarella was microwaved to melt on top. (No styrofoam damage in the Pollo Con Chorizo container if you want to dispute my accusations) I am furious that this is the product I received. I will never be eating here again,ever. Had great service and a friendly waiter for 10 minutes after which our server totally and completely abandoned us. Food took four times as long as Mexican normally takes. We had to go inside to find someone for check. And then a creepy man at a nearby table blew smoke on us and he was too scary to ask him not to. I adore the shrimp chimichangas and most of all the molcajette or however the heck you spell it.. it comes out in this giant caveman like cast iron bowl with chicken steak shrimp avocado soooo much queso I mean it's omg I think someone should check my pulse I may actually be in heaven good... there was soo much food.. I left in a food coma and had a mess ton of food left over for later..also comes with rice beans lettuce pico de gallo stuff like that.. and tortillas..
