The staff is always nice and I don't wait very long to be seen.

The exam was fine and the doctor was fine; checking in and dealing with reception, made the experience below average. So I arrive the requisite ten minutes early for my exam and start preparing the necessary paperwork. Reception asked for the last four of my wife's social security number to process insurance. My wife is a patient; they should have that information. But when I tell them that this is (i) not information I have memorized, and (ii) not information they told me to bring to the appointment I get an argument. The frustration was sufficient that I almost walked out (another employee ran to the front of the room to defuse the situation). And if I were going to this office for anything more complicated than an update of my prescription, I would have walked out. As it was, I'm disappointed that this office did not take the time to try and make my life easier (so a 4 or 5 star review is out of the question), and I really don't like it when I have to argue with people to whom I'm paying good money for what should be a routine service (which is why I can't leave a 3 star review). read more

Oak Parkers NEED to know about Compass Eye Care! It is a very comfortable and trendy environment. The front desk lady is really helpful and stylish. She always comments on my outfits which I love! I'm sad Dr. Licup left - he was awesome and knew exactly what needed to happen for some pretty major problems I was having two years ago. Dr. Tan seems great as well and he explained all my options for future years of eye care. He is very personable and keeps it comfortable with light chit chat. I've recommended everyone in the area to Compass Eye Care, and they seem to take MOST insurance (including my health insurance when I didn't have eye insurance). read more

Compass Eye Care receives 5 stars from me for several reasons. The quality of care performed, quality of services provided, and quality of staff and the environment were all outstanding. Dr. Tan is very knowledgeable and helpful, and had a great manner in discussing my eye health with me. I would say his style is of a "teaching doctor", which I personally like and respect. He explained my conditions and eye health to me in understandable terms while still being detailed. He invited my questions, which is something any doctor rarely does. Also, I appreciate they have the "wellness check" which I have also heard called "an optomap scan". The front desk staff was up front about it being $42 additional dollars, but that it was also completely optional. It was worth it! The technician assessing me before my exam was very skilled and pleasant. I do not have vision insurance, but they offered to try to process the exam as a medical claim in the off chance my insurance would cover it. Overall very good experience! read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. I've been a customer for a little over 2 years and have had nothing but good experiences. The staff is incredibly warm and sweet. Dr. Tan is great as well. He's professional, knowledgable, and very friendly. Great selection of frames and prices to fit most budgets. With my insurance, I havent always had the best of luck finding such great eye docs. I am very grateful that this place accepts my insurance. Such a great local practice in Oak Park. Dr. Tan is kind, thorough and really took the time to help me out and understand an issue I was having with wearing glasses (fishbowl affect) after constant contact wearing. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The office is clean, bright and modern. Am planning on taking my 5 year old son here for a routine eye exam as well. Great Optometrist! Not to mention the staff, very friendly and courteous. The eye exam was the most thorough and well explained exam I have ever had in all my years of going to the optometrist. Just came here for the first time since my usual eye doctor moved away. I don't have vision coverage, so I called to verify the prices of everything out of pocket. The prices were very standard for the area, and comparable to what I paid at my last doctor. As a rule of thumb I always waive any optional tests to avoid hidden charges, this isn't unique to compass, it's the way it is at every optometrist I've seen. If you've never been to an optometrist you might get caught off guard that regular health insurance doesn't cover anything, however, I've had bad vision my whole life so I'm used to this, and was prepared to pay out of pocket. Dr. Tan was friendly and knowledgable, and gave a great exam. I'm sure we will continue to visit compass whenever we need an exam. read more

I've used Compass for the last year and have excellent experiences with them every single time. They have very prompt scheduling which means you don't sit around waiting for Dr. Tan. I wish all doctor's offices ran this smoothly! Dr. Tan is great--a really kind, genuine guy. He's easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and explains things well. I have a astigmatism that requires a specially formed contact lens. Dr. Tan helped me choose a "hybrid" hard-soft lens that's hands down the best I've ever had. Awesome place. Friendly staff and no pressure to buy anything. They offered to use my old frames for a new prescription but I like to change frames every few years. Most thorough exam I've had in years. I've gone to one of those chain places for years and was amazed at the better care. Online appointments make it easy. They even offer to just give you the script and you can fill in elsewhere but the selection of frames is good and the atmosphere of the office is clean, efficient and calming. I typically don't take advantage of vision insurance that is given to me via work. This time, I looked into it and found Compass Eye Care. First and foremost, they are located about 2 blocks from my house. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses whenever possible. Everything was very easy. I really liked the previous owner and was worried about the change of ownership. I needn't have been. I am pleased and relieved that Dr. Tan is carrying forward Compass Eye Care's tradition of excellent care and customer service. The facility is cozy, the staff is pleasant and helpful, and Dr. Tan is very competent and communicative (he's a very good listener, but he thoroughly explains everything he's doing during the exam and all of the options for treatment). My only (tiny) beef with the store is the limited selection of frames. I'm not particularly price conscious; my complaint is really about the number of frames, not their expense. I'll echo another reviewer who called the selection "trendy" - I think if I wanted frameless lenses, or glasses with narrow lenses, or horn-rims, or any of the other trendy looks, I'd have been set. As it was, I prefer a more typical shape and I didn't have a lot of choices. That said, I ended up buying four pairs (2 for me and 2 for my wife), so the selection obviously wasn't unacceptable. I was also extremely pleased with the discounts I received on lenses and frames, how my insurance was handled, etc. I'm very conscious about supporting local businesses whenever possible, and not just the grocery stores. I'm glad that this doesn't have to mean giving up on quality of care (which I would never accept anyway), service, or price. I'll be back to Compass Eye Care with my kids soon. read more

Dr. Licup is no longer with the practice, and it just doesn't seem the same. I agree with the review that noted that Dr. Tan was trying to talk me into more tests/more expensive products. He also never seemed to maintain eye contact. Very odd. For an EYE doctor. His practice offers a "scan" that seems more like a scam, in that it's intended to scare you into more care based on what *might* happen to your eyes in the future. In addition, after a lengthy visit, my prescription was recorded incorrectly, and they were pretty unprofessional about handling it.If you absolutely must find a place in Oak Park, I guess it's okay, but my family and I will probably be heading into the city for our next eye exams. read more

I heard great things about Dr. Licup, so I decided to try Compass for my annual eye exam for contacts. When I went, Dr. Licup was not there (does he no longer work there?) and I saw Dr. Tan. Although he was polite & professional, I felt like he was constantly trying to "upsell" me on more expensive products and more exams for future products. At other offices, I have had one eye exam per yer to get my contact lens prescription. Here, I have to come in twice, which is a big waste of my time not to mention another payment for them. read more

This doctor may be fine for adults, but not necessarily for younger kids. He yelled (actually raised his voice) at my 7 year old son when my son reached out to touch the examining lens out of curiosity. The lens are pretty cool looking and I find it hard to imagine that no other child has done the same thing. Seemed like a bit of an overreaction. read more

I thought the staff was friendly, but did, at times feel like Dr. Tan was trying to talk me into more tests/more expensive products, but my main complaint is the time it took for the exam (due to much talking) and the requests for follow-up visits which I didn't want. Their philosophy of more contact with the patient is a good one, but it shouldn't be mandatory in order to get your contact prescription. My old optometrist was also very friendly and thorough, yet was able to send the contacts to my house and have a more streamlined visit. read more

I went last week and have to agree, the experience was positive from the time I walked in the door until the time I left. Dr Tan and his staff are terrific! Extremely thorough and helpful without overselling. I was undecided whether I wanted contacts or glasses and they gave me the time, options and benefits of trying both. If you're looking for a small correction, this may be your guy. If your correction is anything more than simple, stay away. According to Alex Tan, my vision was "extremely complicated and one of the worst" he has handled. He explained he would never be able to get me to 20/20 and I had to accept my vision. He was condescending and dismissive of my concerns. His work left me with contacts and glasses that were unable to correct my vision. I was unable to clearly read 12 point font on a computer monitor from arms length away. I accepted this garbage analysis for three years. I should have found a second opinion sooner, but I was young and naive. Finally, after talking to several other former patients of Alex's, I learned it wasn't just me. Others have experienced similar problems. I've taken my business elsewhere and am happy to say, despite Alex's opinion, my vision was able to be corrected to 20/20. read more
