This place is so pathetic. I took my eyeglasses to get a prescription, and I could sense the negative energy as soon as I walked in--they were not interested in helping me. They instantly gave me the runaround, claiming they couldn't put lenses in the frame because it didn't have a screw. I went to BIG OPTICAL OAKPARK afterward, and they easily popped out the lenses and put them back in, taking care of my needs with ease. I was very happy to give them my business. They also have such a wide variety of cool frames that are out of this world. This will be my favorite store from now on. After being a customer at My Eye Dr. for so many years, I will not be returning. I had an appointment a few weeks ago. One thing that aggravates me is when I have a scheduled appointment and the provider runs late/runs over and no one says anything. After 15 minutes, a young lady walked up to the front and said to come to the back to start the pre-exam, whatever that was. I asked how long would I have to wait for the actual exam and she said about 15-20 minutes. I said, "No, thank you, I'll have to reschedule". I rescheduled for March 11th, but after reading the reviews, I think I'll cancel altogether. What's interesting is someone from their staff is reading and responding to these reviews, but no attempts are being made to rectify the issues, as they keep getting poor reviews. My first visit here. My appointment was at 10am which I arrived a few minutes before. I saw the lights on. A gentleman that works there walks around me in the doorway to unlock the door, like I wasn't standing there. Then he said, I assume you are our 1st patient for 10am? I preceded to go in and Mryna was sitting in there which I know she had to see me standing at the door. So now Jeremy comes in and not introduce himself but asked me to come in the back. Never again will I EVER come here. NEVER! I've been coming since the location was Spex. Honestly it was the best eye doctor experience that I had ever had, which is why I continued to go. It's NOT the same. I scheduled an appointment last week. They called me to verify my insurance information. Nothing changed. I confirmed and they confirmed over the phone. When I came in today BEFORE my exam I asked again about my insurance. "Is everything still the same?" Yes, nothing has changed. AFTER my exam when it's time to pay things change. I paid $120 following years for my exam and contacts. Now my balance is almost $400. WHY!?! HOW!?! I ASKED all these questions BEFORE the exam! It was then explained that something in my insurance had changed. BUT I asked BEFORE several times to confirm. So I had to take my contacts off because I couldn't afford them. I still ended up paying $179 for my exam. If I would have known that I would not have gotten the exam. I asked about the insurance BEFORE my exam. I did not have $179 to spend on an eye exam and I still have to find a way to pay for my contacts. $179 and I walked out empty handed. I'm pissed, disgusted and VERY disappointed because I asked all the appropriate questions before hand and was given the wrong information. read more

I had a terrible experience working with Myra (Might be spelling that wrong). I had a prescription from a previous doctor so I was only looking for two pairs of glasses. I needed prescription glasses to wear daily and prescription sunglasses. The first thing we do is run my insurance and she showed me all the frames I could buy. I found a pair of sunglasses but wasn't ready to buy until I checked out one other place. I then returned two days later to buy the sunglasses. The first issue came when she told me I now couldn't buy the sunglasses with my insurance even thought the previous visit it was all fine. Then as I was debating my options (which she had no interest in discussing options) I figured I'd buy the sunglasses out of pocket and use my insurance on my daily glasses. She then started to run the numbers. The first time I went in the frames were $209 with a 20% discount meaning I'd spend about $170 for the frame. She then gave me the price of $260 (no discount) and when I asked her why the price went up she said the price she quoted two days prior was if I bought the glasses as is. But she knew two days earlier that I was going to buy prescription glasses which upset me that she didn't disclose the pricing increase. I've also worn glasses since I was 10 years old I've never paid more for frames because of a prescription. I got a half hearted "I'm sorry" the kind that you know the person doesn't mean it. No. No......NO! I've been going here for a few years. I've never been happy, but it's convenient for my lifestyle. I'm blind without my glasses- and when I'm looking for a new pair I get no help- even when I ask. I recently got contacts- today I thought I lost one- but now think it's in my eye. I stopped in to see if they could look since I have agitated it trying or thinking I got it out. They asked me to wait and wanted my insurance card. They wanted to charge me for a full exam to help a client. Clearly a task that would take the expert a second to tell me if it was still in my eye. They have never treated me well. I am new to the world of prescription glasses, having started wearing glasses for the first time in my life, 2 years ago. Unhappy with the first pair of prescription frames, I bought from Visionworks, I thought Oakley brand prescription frames might be a better fit for my big head. I found that Spex in Oak Park carried Oakley, but when I visited, they did not have many men's glasses at all, and almost all of the Oakley's they had on display were sunglasses. Their frames on display are mostly Unisex, a feminist theme that I carried on throughout my entire experience. Not that that is a bad thing, just very "Oak Park". Sales person Megan, told me that she would bring in a pair of Oakley frames I had requested. 2 holiday months went by with no call, and it was apparent there was a breakdown of communication. I tried searching for other stores that accepted Davis Vision and sold Oakley's. To my surprise the pickings were slim. Lenscrafters quoted me $300 and some change for my prescription, even though I was out of network. I decided to swallow my pride and go back to Spex. They insisted I get an eye exam, even though I was happy with my prescription. As it turns out they have an extremely modern process. One that shows you pictures of your Retina! Creepy, cool, +1 point. When it came time to buy the damn glasses, they were going to charge me over $400! And this is with my insurance! A I mentioned the other option I had with out of network Lenscrafters. Megan then found a way to sell me the glasses with no warranty, and cut the price down to around $280. Wow... Only slightly better than my out of network option. They never asked if I wanted features such as scratch resistance, glare minimizing, though we did discuss the advancements in technology for modern transition lenses. Upon reviewing my bill, the glasses sold me had all these bells and whistles, some I was charged for, others were covered by insurance. Would I go back? Probably not, though I am satisfied with the product I received. read more

I'm super pissed off at Spex and here is why... I originally liked this place and I have come here for the past two years.. Everything was fine until I ran out of contacts too soon. They gave me an extremely hard time when I called asking to get an additional box of contacts (not to mention they never called me back the first time I called to leave a message). I still have 3-4 months left until my next eye exam but I am completely out of contacts! After calling back and complaining to them over and over, I just told them to give me my prescription so that I could go to another place. Spex refuses to give me my prescription which is MY personal information and MY records. I'm pretty sure that is illegal. After going back and forth they allowed me to purchase one more box (through them of course) but still wont give me my prescription. I will never go to Spex again and I will make sure that no one else I know does either. read more

And all I can say is I didn't have to look any further I was greeted at the door by several people which made me happy I told them I was just looking for frames . Then Angel came over to assist me to find the perfect ones since I'm really picky. I asked for opinions from the other ladies working there and they were most helpful. I found the perfect frame for the best price after spending the day before looking not finding what I wanted and being overwhelmed at the prices. My glasses use a high end lens which in itself is expensive but the package Angel gave me I didn't need to go look any further. I have no idea where these bad reviews are coming from. I have never been to an Eye Doctor before, I have always had perfect vision. Like many hitting 50, my eyesight is going bad to read, and you hear on commercials of all the eye diseases, again making me hesitant. I assumed I would go in they will have me read an eye chart, tell me I need glasses and send me on my way without know if I am ok. Isn't that what everyone wants for a checkup, to make sure EVERYTHING (no disease) is ok. Well what happen was the OPPOSITE of just read some letters and make me pay. My Doctor was Jessilyn Burns. She was AMAZING she told me every second what she was doing and why (a little fast, might want to slow down a little). That is a HUGE comfort, not sure she knows how good that is. Makes you feel everything is going to be checked, and nice for me to know all was well, except my reading as I did need some reading glasses. When I went to pick out my frames, the girl that helped me was SSSOOOOO Patient as I tried on 10 pairs before deciding. Niki Miller went more than the extra mile to solve my problem (with another shop), by doing a pro-bono and very thorough analysis (including two eyeglasses measurements and comparison), and giving me the solution. Not only that, but as a cherry on top, she offered to further collaborate with (basically) their competitors in order to have my problem fixed. I love my glasses from Spex, Oak Park. Cheap? Uh, Super NO, but effective, attractive and comfortable. The frames are "handmade" (whatever that means; I find it hard to picture these craftsmen at their jewelers' tables...). Anyway, that meant it took a while to get them, and there was a small anomaly in the frame. But they are beautiful! When a defect revealed itself to Niki M., the manager, she ordered me a new set of frames. Bingo. The first frames were defective but functional. They had months of wear by the time of replacement. (Indeed they had already drawn a thousand compliments!-- thank you, LA Eyewear!) True I paid dearly, and there were some peccadilloes, but in the end, I couldn't be happier with them. And there is no way that Costco or Lens Crafters could have styled me out like these sparklers! I feel good about buying local and having the chance to work through the glitches. read more

The appointment started more than 20 minutes after it was scheduled. the person we originally talked to about the first bullet, who was supposed to do check-in, sauntered into the office about 20 minutes after the appointment was supposed to begin. in total, between showing up on time and finally leaving, the whole appointment (eye doctor and glasses) took almost 2 hours. and because of the way they fudged our insurance, i didn't even have glasses. while our insurer covers this place, getting myeyedr to apply it bounced somewhere between annoying and angering. in several occasions they tried to misapply our insurance, and refused to listen to us until the insurer called them. we decided they could not be trusted to buy the glasses. and when we told them that we would not be buying them from them they acted shocked. We will never go here again. read more

Not MY eye doctor anymore. This business will say whatever they want in order to get your business and squeeze every dollar out of you. I first went into this establishment at the end of 2016. Had my exam, chose my frames... then I sat down to go over details. I chose a mid-level index with transition lenses, and then the upselling began. I was pushed to get anti-glare lenses and a polished edge to the lenses. I refused the polished edge and begrudgingly accepted the anti-glare. Then I was pitched the idea of a warranty on the glasses. I was a hard NO at first, but then she said it covered loss or theft, and at the price I was quoted that seemed like a good deal. We even had an exchange where I asked for more details on the loss/theft section, and she even made the joke that I shouldn't just say that they were lost to get a free pair. I agreed to the price, and was told that she would email me a copy of the warranty. This was never emailed. I was told that I would get a call in 2-3 days with an update, and my glasses would be delivered in story within 2 weeks. I did not receive a call, so I called to check in. They had not submitted my order yet. They assured me that it would be submitted that day, and they would call with an update. Some time later, I called again as I hadn't heard, and my glasses were in. Thanks for the notice. The lenses that they put into my frames were not made correctly. I could only see clearly when I pinched the frames at the temple, evidence that something was wrong here (also, that polished edge? they went ahead with it and charged me.) I was told that the lab does not make mistakes, and if they sent in the order again it would be the same. Despite my objections, they refused to resubmit. They said my option was 1) to live with the headaches and blurry vision or 2) upgrade to the highest index, but lose the transitions feature. I have worn glasses for 27 years and have never heard of an issue like this. Lenses should fit into any frame that is sold. I went for the higher index without transitions. I asked again about my warranty. Again, I was told it would be emailed. It was not. Same issue again with a lack of notifications/call from the office. When my glasses finally came in again, it was obvious that there was an issue. The frames were mangled from someone (VSP or the office here) taking out and replacing the lenses. They were so twisted that one of the arms didn't rest on my ear. The saleswoman said that they looked fine, which would be funny if I hadn't put over $350 and weeks of time into this experience. After about 30 minutes and 10 trips to the heat treating station, my glasses were touching both ears and nose at the same time (an improvement for sure), and the slope difference on the face of the glasses was less than 1/2" from left to right. Not ideal, but because I had the replacement warranty I thought that was good enough. Plus, we had an at-the-time newborn at the house, and "swinging by to pick up glasses" had turned into an ordeal. Well guess what? Glasses were lost in spring 2017, out of state. So I called to use the warranty I purchased. And what I was told in Winter of 2016 was no longer valid in Summer 2017. Now I am told that they don't cover loss of theft, the employee is not held accountable for whatever she told me to get that sale, and I'm out the cost of the warranty. Also, as a favor, they offered to give me a +30% discount on a new pair of glasses, but only if they are purchased without insurance. We did the math... and whether I used this deal or properly went through my insurance, it is the same price. I tried to lessen financial burden on them by offering to use another pair of frames that I own and just replace the lenses at the discount offered, and was told that the deal was only for a total, full pair of glasses that is purchased out of insurance. Thanks for nothing. I am out a pair of glasses, the money I paid for them, and the warranty. Their offered solution to the mess is the "opportunity" to purchase 2 pairs of glasses from them this year. No thanks, I'd rather go to any other eyewear store, there are dozens. tl;dr Call frequently to make sure they submit then receive your glasses, DO NOT buy the "warranty", and walk away with a refund if they do not deliver usable glasses the first time. Actually, just avoid this place altogether. With this level of service it will probably flip into another glasses chain in a year anyways. read more

Wish I had read all 33 negative reviews ! =( My husband ordered a pair of glasses that he needed as he broke his other pair . He is a semi driver and has very bad vision . They told us approximately a week ( ok not the quickest turn around time ) but it is what it is . After several weeks , still nothing. I call at least 12 times leaving a message with a phone service. They never call back , I go to the location and they tell me Maybe ? in a few days ? I told the manager , Please just cancel the order , we've been patient long enough. She said she would . Still NO credit has been issued , which was over 500 with his insurance and they haven't taken the hold off his insurance so he can go to another provider that is competent to do the order. Ive left several more messages , still NOTHING! I had told my husband to go to The Eyeglass Shop around the corner , Minas is a wonderful Optician but didn't take our VSP insurance , I told my husband even if its more money at least it would've been done and done correctly ! I wish I had read these before going to MyEYEDr, as problems I have experienced are very similar to those described below. The OD I saw was very kind, but the appointment started about 45 minutes after scheduled time, and took an extremely long time due to provider's difficulty using their computer system. I had explained that I was starting to have more difficulty with near vision and that I needed replacement lenses. A trial pair was ordered for me which made my near vision even worse - I could barely read with my lenses in. I went back for check up, the doc rechecked my eyes with the lenses in, made corrections to the RX and stated the lenses would be ordered in the new RX. Two week later, I haven't heard anything, so I call to check on my order, only to find out that they didn't actually order the lenses for me. Communication with the staff was quite difficult, I couldn't get a clear answer about why lenses weren't ordered, but I eventually asked for my RX to be sent to me so that I could order lenses from somewhere else. The new RX is way more expensive than the lenses I previously wore, and my near vision is still terrible, so clearly there was still something wrong with the prescription I recieved. I spent over 300 dollars and now have lenses I cannot read in. Won't be going back. read more

This is the second time I've been here. The Manger, Megan was great. She's very personable and easy to talk to.  Her service alone would be rated 5 stars. The reason I took 1 star off was for the service afterwards.  The gentleman helping me select glasses seemed impatient (I had a 10a appointment, but there were other patient seen at the time so maybe with the volume of patients being seen).  He quickly went over the pricing and policies and left me to wander.  I ended up choosing to use my insurance allocation for contacts only because I bought my last pair of glasses through Warby Parker and felt they were a much better deal.   Overall, come for the checkup- the the ppl are friendly especially the manger she is great.  Use your insurance money for contacts (I love my dailies and I tend to have dry eyes). read more

DO NOT GO HERE. This place is a essentially a criminal enterprise which preys on customers and their insurance companies. Went in for a simple eye exam to determine whether or not I needed prescription glasses or simple readers. "Oh, you have good insurance," says the manager (Niki). I should have walked out right then. An hour later, with eyes dilated, I'm brought several pairs of glasses -- without being told the results of the exam -- and am urged to buy an absurdly expensive pair of glasses that I didn't need. Friendly sales people? Sure. But all sales people are friendly when they know they can bilk your insurance. When I contacted Spex for an eye exam, the phone personnel was extremely informative and helped me determine the costs of my contact eye exam. I was looking forward to my appointment as they carry some rather trendy designer eyeglasses. On the day of my appointment (TODAY), I ran a little late due parking as this location is on the very busy Oak Park Avenue in downtown Oak Park. I had to park down the block making me about 20 minutes late. When I walked in, they pretty much told me I couldn't be seen and that I should make an appointment for another time. They were not accommodating nor considerate even after I explained the parking disaster. Having worked in a similar profession, I know accommodation can and SHOULD be made. Went in for an eye exam- charged extra because of "new technology" which I was sold on...should have walked out right then. Total rip off....things to keep in mind if you go there and get an exam and buy glasses: 1) $55 dollar fee for "new tech" eye screening...this is sales another way to get your money 2) If you buy glasses, they are non-refundable (they do not tell you this until after) 3) You do not need the UV protection 4) They are sales people they will upsell you like crazy I was fooled because my eyes were dilated and when i asked questions the lady got flustered...I should have just left. Exercise caution with this store and company. I went there for an examination in October 2016 and as a result needed new glasses and contacts. The young optometrist was competent enough that I trusted they would do a good job with glasses. I selected and ordered a pair which arrived a week later. I was talked into a lense that darkened in sunlight with an explanation the technology was much improved. It wasn't. The corrective lenses also did not improve my vision. I returned them a few weeks later with the assumption of a 30 day return policy. They said the company (Spex) would return the money, for the glasses, back to me. I'm still waiting and the weekly calls to the store manager go unanswered. PLEASE avoid this store. I'm out of pocket over $500 and still hoping for a refund without having to go to court. read more

Not only were they rude to my friend and I, but blatantly racist to someone who came in off the street looking into getting lenses replaced. I've never spent so long writing a review as I have here, but MyEyeDr has been so bad that I want to warn others. Previously they screwed up a simple order of new lenses so completely (see my previous review - I'll warn you it's long and detailed) and the wait was so long that they offered to make me an additional set of lenses for an old pair of glasses I had. I was told they'd be ready in 7-10 days. 14 days later I still hadn't heard from them. I called and was told it would just be a couple more days. On day 20 they called and said that the lenses were not shipped from the lab in California because "they didn't pass inspection." Why it took 20 days to even get to this point is a mystery but they said they'd rush them. Well, they were finally ready 30 days later! And once again they didn't follow directions - I asked that the lenses be UNpolished (they were for rimless frames and I don't like the glare that you get with polished edges.) Well, once again they were polished. Although I don't like the edges, there's no way I'm going through this ordeal again. I'd rather just buy new glasses elsewhere. Clearly there is zero quality control which, for the high prices there, you'd expect. At least the service was more pleasant this time because they got rid of the terrible manager who was there earlier. Overall my experience has been terrible over and over. read more

Let me say that I have been a customer of Spex (diff location) for 6+ years and always, always got excellent service, but I came to Oak Park because I didn't feel the love from the other location and I want to say that Niki, Sandra & Jeanie were a pleasure to do business with. I love that the frames offered are not your usual Lenscrafter/Pearl Vision selections. Yes, I agree that some of the frames are on the pricey side, but I don't mind paying for great quality. Two words - overpriced/incompetent. Its been a month since I ordered a single lens replacement using my insurance and a gift card. First time I went to pick them up it was obvious they had made a mistake in fabricating the lens. So I returned the glasses and they promptly offered to correct the problem. The second time I went there there was only one lens in the glasses?? I know I only asked to have one lens replaced but I thought they would leave the other lens alone not throw it out. After posting this review, I was contacted by Pierre at the corporate headquarters. He made an appointment for me at the location at 29 E Madison Street. I brought in my new glasses that I couldn't see out of. Everyone at that location was extremely friendly. They re-examined my eyes and determined that the location in Oak Park gave me a bad prescription. I picked up my new glasses today, and I'm happy that I now have the right glasses! It's just sad that it took a bad review here to get the customer service that I needed. read more

This place is a little pricey for the contacts I got but I think it was worth it. Jamie is the most fantastic person! He is incredibly patient, friendly, and helpful! When I was worried about the cost of my contacts he got right on the phone and called my insurance company a few times in order to help dig up some savings. He also called the contacts company to get me a rebate. This brought the cost down significantly and I can't thank Jamie enough for his help. I'm sad they are moving but will certainly find them in their new location next year for another exam. read more

I visited the store for an adjustment of a pair of glasses purchased at a store (out of state) not related to Spex at all; they worked with me until they got it right...and it took a while to get it right. I hadn't actually gone through with purchasing a pair of glasses, but I stopped in to see their selection. I knew coming in that Spex was going to have a higher priced selection. Why would you expect any less from handmade glasses and imported frames from France, Spain, Italy, and so on?! Anyway, I noticed a big difference in staff and overall customer service at this location. Don't get me started on the Lincoln Square location. As soon as I step foot in the store I was greeted by Laura, I believe. She made sure to check in with me every so often, addressing me by my name. Hardly anyone ever does that these days. I can't review the Doctor's services because I didn't use them, but that first impression made a big positive dent. I may travel all the way back from Chicago to visit this location. read more

I don't have a lot of time to get things like this done. I scheduled this appointment a month in advance. I show up and they claim all their systems and phone lines are down (someone was actively talking on a land line so that was a blatant lie) and tell me they can get my exam done and I can pick out glasses but they can't tell me how much anything will cost. I am disappointed with how my experience has turned out here. I thought when they changed ownership, the service would remain the same. However, I showed up for my teenage daughter's contact fitting, only to be told that they do not have the trial contacts. Isn't this something you should tell your customer before they show up? IN addition, my son's glasses have taken forever to arrive, and they keep pushing the arrival date back. His regular glasses that I ordered from somewhere else the same day came in weeks a go. We will most likely be switching. read more
