I played this course in early Spring in a late day Mens league and it was in great shape. Tee boxes , fairways and greens are all excellent. Plush and green with very few flaws. The sand traps need a little work. Great challenging course with balanced traps and hazards. I was surprised how fast the greens were which is actually good. Played the North/East courses started on the North the tee boxes are nicely trimmed the grass on the fairways was excellent there were a few areas when the ball would land it would stay in a hole because the ground is so soft. The greens were very well taken care of no brown spots at all the ball rolled very well. All of the bunkers were also very nice. The East course was in just as wonderful condition I think it was a little more difficult than the North course the greens were very fast and the hole placement on a few holes was well placed. I had a few land on the green and roll rite down the hill. Pass of play was very nice we did have two sets of two guys come behind us and we let them play threw. When you check in you go threw the front door and exit threw the side the bar is closed if you wanted drinks you had to get it while checking in there was no drink cart. This is a little sad there's no reason to not have drinks and food if every other restaurant can be open they should as well. Overall we will return to play read more

My work has been using Compass Pointe for 6 years for our charity golf tournament. It has never been anything but a great experience! Customer service is top notch! With 156 golfers, coordination has to be perfect. The golfers each and every year are impressed how Compass Pointe is strategic in the holes the golfers start and end their play at. The greens are beautifully kept! Golf carts are plentiful and easy to use. Customer service at the snack shack is friendly. The ladies behind the counter are funny and love to interact with the golfers. We appreciate how often the drink cart came past throughout the day with cold drinks and snacks. Such a wonderful experience each and every year. We raised over $60,000 yesterday in a few hours and could not have done so without Compass Pointe. They made the entire day enjoyable for all! When I posted my pics on social media, I received many responses on how they wished they would have known as they love golfing at Compass Pointe as well. read more

Typically not one to complain about a course, especially on a Sunday, but having a 5 hour round (front 9 took 3 hours) and only seeing a cart girl ONE TIME while I waited to hit every. single. shot....it really grinded my gears today Compass Pointe. If you're not going to manage your tee times better when you have events going on, don't charge $55. Compensate for the wait somehow! $55 round, no cart girls, waiting every shot, plus aerated greens....c'mon now help us out somewhere!!! DO BETTER!!! read more

If I could give this negative stars I would. Charged our group 64/person and there was no grass in any of the fairways and tee boxes. We stopped playing here years ago because of the conditions, was hoping it would be better now, but was highly disappointed. Do not play here. There are too many other places in much better conditions around. Awful just awful. read more

I was in my car about 6 minutes ago I'm already on the first tee. while it doesn't happen every day it sure is nice on a Friday when you can jump on the North course and play. The fairways and greens are looking good I just don't know that I want to leave to hire review because the course will get crowded again! Course has serious drainage problems and traps are in terrible condition. I realize that we've had very wet weather but in comparison to other courses this is one of the worst - - very soggy fairways, large puddles in traps and none have been raked. No marshals to monitor pace of play. Additionally, the starter(s) are control freaks; they won't even give you a key to your cart until moments before your tee time. All other courses in MD allow you to drive your carts to the putting greens, driving ranges, rest room, etc. but the starters treat the golfers like little babies and have an attitude problem (except for their good ol' boys regular buddies). read more

wanna be A holes you'll get the review for it. 5 of us military guys pulled in here for a week and wanted to golf. 5 of us total so I called and asked about playing 5 on a single time they said no but if we book 2 times for a 3 and a 2 team we can do that. so we start and by the 7th hoLE we had some old man zoom by us yelling and went to complain so a kid came out and told us to split and go to the next hole no exceptions after I explained we booked 2 times per the receptionist we went anyway to the next hole only to be sitting and waiting for another team to drive. by the time it was our turn our 4 caught up. If we are playing As said and keeping pace what the h3ll is the problem other than having the need to grip about something. won't ever come back nor recommend this place for events read more

What's the other reviewer talking about? Impeccable shape? Say what?!? This course always seems to be a conundrum. I'm always forgetting why I don't like playing here, until I come back and play it again. Then I remember...and forget later on. It's a vicious cycle. There are two 18 hole golf courses here. North-East & South-West. From a golf standpoint, SW is definitely the easier, more forgiving course. NE is a much tighter, tree-lined golf course that feels like it plays longer than what the card says. If I had to choose, I'd play the SW course because it is more fun, a more variety of holes. NE is just kinda boring, except for a few holes where it is a blind tee shot. And by blind, I mean you have NO clue where the fairway is or where your ball is after you hit it. It is a complete joke because you hit a great shot only to find out that it wasn't. Some of the fairways are in good shape, and some of the fairways are completely dead from heat/lack of water. Your ball might bounce 20 feet in the air after landing in the fairway. The greens are usually in good shape, so they have that going for them. Overall, I wouldn't pay over $35 to play here on a weekday. I don't think the course is worth more than that on a daily basis. There are a lot better options for your money in the area, and I would always check them out first. read more

We had 0722 South/West tee time. The telephone recording explained the Clubhouse was open and this was not the case. We were told the beverage cart would be on course at 0830... this was not the case. When we finally saw the beverage cart, the time it took to check out was not efficient. We're new to the area and found this place not too far from where we live. The staff was very helpful and gave us all the info we needed to have a great experience here. We played the South East course and had no complaints about the course itself. The driving range was great, nice and open. You can order foods/drinks (beer) at hole 8 and pick up after hole 9, this was convenient. Overall great experience. I will add that we came during the week, there was a good amount of people here but we never felt rushed. Not sure how busy this place gets during the weekends but we will definitely have to come back & find out. read more

Your tempo may be interrupted in the middle of your backswing on #2 on the South course when the shotgun blasts from the neighboring gun range twenty yards on the right. The clubhouse began the round by telling us that the fairways are in bad shape. Try almost completely devoid of grass because of the weather, so your second shot is almost exclusively off of remnants of grass five feet from where your ball lands. Then, the starter begins your round, after you have paid, by telling you that every sand trap's condition is similarly unplayable, so you get a free drop. (one star for the free drop). The rabid fox sunning himself next to the green on the North course was joined by his partner who literally brushed me while I was retrieving my ball from a bunker where the foxes had chosen to dig a huge burrow. Another star for the North East course. It is in far superior shape to the South West. Both could be sweet with a $2mil makeover, which is not likely. There are colorful patrons. Flat brims and rap inspired wardrobes on white dudes are in full effect. My buddy splashed down after a huge drive fell five feet short of land, and an obese bozo in a floppy hat yelled "good shot" as he sped away in his cart. That was immediately follwed by the ranger rushing off after his walkie talkie went off in my backswing and instructed him to handle some groups who were "having words with each other." That's how they roll in the Deena. read more

I am from out of town and had a day to kill in the area. I found Compass Pointe through Golfnow.com. I have had great finds from them in the past when traveling. But not this time. The course was in TERRIBLE shape. We thought we got a deal at $50 a head from GolfNow.com and then we find out they had groupons out in the area for $25. I would have still been upset paying $25. Even the carts were in bad shape. One drink gal for the 4 9 hole courses. I can't stress enough how bad the fairways, bunkers and greens were. We actually measured grass on one green that was over 1" tall! Some greens had large dead spots. There were hundreds of geese on the fairways with their droppings everywhere. There is no way I will ever play here again or recommend it. read more

What a total dump. Fairways look worse than my front lawn. Dirt and weeds. Tee boxes are not much better. At least they are painted green. Greens are loaded with divot holes and sand traps don't get raked by the patrons. Marshalls are nowhere to be found and the only person on the course, and that was a Sunday was the cart lady. GM was seen hiding in the pro shop sitting in his office. He should get out there and see his work.....he'd be pulling his hair out. Can't believe it was so bad. This was the north/east part. I'm sure the south/west was just as bad. This course has so much potential but no one is trying to make it even a "NICE" course. Total dump. Not going back. Can't wait for the sister course, Eisenhower to reopen. Maybe then the county will put some money into this dump. read more

The course itself is decent, but the facilities and customer service make this a 1-star kinda place. The clubhouse feels like a dungeon, and the snack stand has only the most basic food... mostly packaged chips, candy bars, etc. Not a real bistro or grill by any means. The real problem though is customer service. Not sure how to really describe it other than there isn't really a "service" kind of attitude among the employees. As an example, I've gone there twice specifically to his off of the grass practice facilities. Both times, called ahead to make sure it was open. Both times, the pro shop assured me that the grass range was open. Both times, you guessed it, it wasn't open....only the plastic mats with tees were open. Neither time did anyone care much, or see that it was a problem that they were giving out bad information ahead of time. I play golf to have fun and enjoy the outdoors. I've been here about 5 times, and every time it was less enjoyable than it otherwise would have been b/c of a general lack of service-minded staff. I keep going back hoping it will change b/c it is the closest course to me, but it hasn't over last 2 years. read more

The staff is friendly and very helpful. Both courses are fun, but there are a million geese out there. That wouldn't be too bad if the geese didn't poop all over the place, especially the greens. Ever try to sink a 20 ft putt with three goose turds between you and the whole? Me either, but I've tried to do it with four goose turds between me and the hole and to my surprise, I didn't sink the putt. Not because I hit any goose crap, but because I suck at putting. But I imagine if you're a great putter and there was goose poop in the way of your lie, then you'd be upset. Not only do the geese have free run on the greens, but the humans leave the sand traps unraked, and the divots uncovered and the pitch marks where they lay. read more

I really liked these courses. I played here a couple of times and was treated really well. The courses always seem to be in impeccable shape, and its very moderately priced. I usually try to go after work and catch the twilight rate. It is a very nice layout with lots of variety. read more

I played South and West this afternoon and the course was in great shape for the end of November. Fairways and greens were near perfect. After visiting Compass Pointe in September and playing the South and West courses I let them know I was very unimpressed... they apologized for the conditions and sent me three passes to come and play the North and East courses. I have to say, it was like I was at a totally different club. Great course and in great shape!! My recommendation, if you are going to play this course, choose the North and East. read more

So far, the course is in better shape in 2013 than it has been for the last couple years (2011-12 had terrible problems with dead turf from heat/moisture issues). The wait to pay in the pro shop can take quite a while, but staff both indoors and out are very friendly and try to accommodate any requests (especially the gals in the bar and grill areas). There are casual leagues for both men and women, and both private and group lessons for those who want to improve their game. The course is trying to innovate with night golf and date nights, too. This course design is not appropriate to walk (too far from green to the next tee in many cases), so a riding cart is a must. Once one gets away from the neighboring shooting range on South #1 and #2 holes (yes, it is jarring to hear the blasts if you're not expecting them), there is a variety of wildlife in the naturalized areas, and the course is home to a variety of birds and an eagle. The course is a valuable public good, and the sport serves teens to seniors well for enjoyable entertainment and fitness. There are a number of groups that use the large tents set up by the Compass Pointe clubhouse for golf outings, and the covered patio outside the bar is a pleasant space after a round, too. Water management in past years has proven inadequate since the course suffered alternately from wet wilt, mud flats and from water shortages in the recent past, which has made turf management a lost cause. Despite budget woes, AA County needs to invest in some maintenance to keep this course from sliding into decline. Public courses in nearby counties have somehow been managing these turf issues better and are still offering reasonable greens fees, so there is hope for Compass Pointe if the right priorities are adopted. read more

They need to sell off 18 holes and use the money to be able to keep 18 holes in decent condition and fire the person responsible for maintaining the course. read more

Played here Wednesday at 1:28 north and south courses. When checking in was told it was 'slow out there'. I played in a twosome , we had a three ahead of us and a two ahead of them and a two ahead of them. 4hra 40 min was ridiculous for this. If you know it's playing slow, get your Marshall on the course to find out why!?! read more

I figured I would try this course again. Huge mistake! Completely over priced! The condition of the course is awful. The greens are as long as the fairway grass if not longer. We were told over the phone that they aerated the greens March 1st and they are in great condition. However, they appear as though they were aerated last week and never kept up. The East course is cart path only. Not because of rain however, but because the fairways are garbage. Do not go to the course! Pay the extra $10-15 and go to a better course. Horrible!! read more

Chumpass Point as usual provides terrible service for a crap course. 4 kids 16-15 go to play today. Because one kid forgot his DL the wont give them carts, want them to walk 18 in 92 degree heat. Great idea to push 4 aspiring golfers away from the game. read more

I had one of the worst experiences of my life at this golf course. Management was selfish and unhelpful throughout the round. We saw the cart girl only once over a 4 hour period. Also, several different waitresses verbally berated us during our philanthropy event. We were the only people on the golf course and they did not want to serve us or be of any help. I will never go back to this golf course and I hope no one else does either. read more

I don't know that I've ever played a golf course in worse condition. We played the West and the North. The North was actually in pretty good shape, but I'm giving the course one star because the West was bad enough for both of them. The tee boxes looked like they'd just been sodded, and were uneven and long. The fairways were torn up, making it seem that divots were never addressed by the groundskeepers. And the greens! Part of the problem is the golfers do not fix their ball marks. I could have fixed at least - seriously - 15 ball marks on each green. The bunkers were deplorable - several were in horrible repair, many had plenty of rocks. Very few rakes to be found. This was my first time playing here, but the rest of my foursome was very disappointed because they told me what a nice course it was. When we arrived, there were a number of staff members talking to one another, but no one helped with our bags. We were pretty much ignored by all staff. Once playing, though it was a Sunday morning, we did not see the beverage cart even one time on the West. On the North, we saw the cart on #1 - useless, since we'd just stopped, and on #9 - again, useless. I don't know how much it cost to play here, but $20 would have been too much. BTW - the rest of my foursome said they would never play Compass Pointe again. read more
