    Dead mouse in our unit.
    Elizabeth K.

Dirty, rodent-filled. DO NOT give this facility your money or belongings! The entire facility is run down, very dirty and smells like weed. We moved our stuff in in May 2021. By October we discovered a dead mouse and mouse poop in our unit. We notified the staff (Justin is very helpful and respectful), who said that people leave food in their units which causes a mouse problem. The building seems to be absolutely infested with rodents. We lost over $1000 of our property, having to throw away a perfectly good couch and mattress because of the mouse poop. We paid the maximum monthly price for insurance, but Xercor, the insurance company, only gave us $400 to cover the damages. By November 2021 we discovered another dead mouse in the unit and decided to move our belongings into a cleaner facility. We chose Prime Storage in Portsmouth, RI, which is spotless, has helpful staff and zero mice. We asked Compass to refund us for the weeks in December when we were no longer occupying the unit, but they said this was "impossible". I can't believe that after losing over $1000 of our property, having to pay movers to move our stuff twice, and the stress of dealing with a mouse-filled unit, Compass was completely unwilling to refund us for the weeks we weren't even using the unit. They should be bending over backwards to accommodate us after this horrible experience! Based on the numerous other 1-star Yelp reviews this facility has, we are not alone is our disappointment. Don't trust the Google reviews--almost all of them come directly from Compass's website. Don't let our ordeal happen to you--DO NOT USE Compass Branch Ave, PVD!

I rented a storage unit when the property was owned/managed by Uhaul. Under their management, the price was reasonable despite the overall grimy/dingy-appearance of the storage facility. (FYI The bright, clean lovely pictures that you see on their website are mostly representative of the entry level floor...) However, acquisition by Compass Self Storage coincided with a sharp decline in my relationship with the facility and I had to move. 1.) Notification of New Ownership: I had faithfully paid my bill via autopay, I was initially unaware that the property had changed from Uhaul to Compass Self Storage. That is until I learned that my unit was scheduled for auction during a phone call in December 2014. I asked them what happened to my autopay. Their response: When Compass acquired the facility they were not given all of the billing/customer information by Uhaul and were unable to re-initiate autopay. After TOO-MUCH conversation they acted as if they were doing me a favor by crediting me all of the late charges that were assessed due to THEIR ineptitude. 2.) Billing: I spoke with Mike to determine what my bill would be moving forward. Mike calculated the amount, and I scheduled recurring payments through my bank based on our conversation (I did NOT trust them with my account information!!). Again, about a month later... I'm back on the phone with Mike because my payment was late. I retrieved the notes from our prior conversation, to review them with him. He initially seemed confused by his OWN words, but eventually double checked the ledger and figured out my bill ... it turns out that HE made an honest error when he previously quoted me my payment amount. However, he never admitted nor apologized for his error ... thankfully, he helped me get credited for my late fees. #guiltyhelpfullness 3.) Rent increases: The rent increases are just straight ridiculous! My records indicate (Uhaul): $119/month, (Compass 4/14)$131, (Compass 10/14) $140, (Compass 12/14) $153. 4.) They maximize late fees/charges: Compass claims that it does not process partial payments although they will deposit your checks WITHOUT applying it to the balance of your account so that they can assess late fees. Confused? Yeah... me too!! Here's the scenario: I missed one of the letters announcing yet another price hike. However, my bank had issued payment at the old price which ended up being a few $ short. When I realized the error, I IMMEDIATELY issued a smaller check to cover the discrepancy. It turns out that by the time the 2nd check arrived I had been assessed a $20 late charge. So at that point, my rent was paid in full, yet I had a balance of $20 due to a late charge. They then assessed me with a 2nd late charge, because I hadn't paid the first late charge. The kicker? They held onto both of my checks and didn't deposit them until the following month when the next-months check arrived because the first 2 checks were a 'partial payment' (i.e. the payments didn't cover the rent+late fees, so the first 2 checks were not applied to the balance'). I asked Dino what happened to the 3 checks. long story short they issued me a credit for the first 2 checks instead of applying them to my account. By this logic, they can continue to charge late fees FOR having a late fee! ...I dunno, but this 'feels' rather unethical. 5.) Online Billing/Online-Payment/E-Billing: Their e-billing is woefully inadequate. It doesn't list all of the information about prior balances/payments/balances-carried-forward. Likewise, the exact amount of each payment made is not directly reflected in their online ledger. (For example, you'd never be able to decipher #4 by reviewing my payment history.) 6.) Phone calls/Correspondence: Mike and Dino do not return phone calls or respond to messages with any type of urgency. This is particularly unacceptable for a company that has the proclivity to charge late fees due to carrying over a balance due to late fees. (See #4 and 5) 7.) Filth: The storage facility is GRIMY... if anything TOUCHES the floor it is immediately covered in black dirt. However, the office and bathrooms are clean-enough. 8.) Safety: A gentlemen repeatedly came into the facility to use the bathroom while I was moving out. This same gentleman chastised me for locking the bathroom door. He complained that I hadn't read the sign on the door and that the bathroom shouldn't be locked while occupied .. excuse me? To be clear! I have no intention of learning the quirks of your weird locks!!! How the management has failed to recognize that counter-intuitive door locks presents a safety/liability issue defies logic ... Please install the correct bathroom door locks!!! Bottom line, I don't think that the workers are dumb... but every time I've had to deal with them, I have found that they are profoundly inadequate, unprofessional, lackadaisical and lazy. I am thankful that my things were safe here. But, I would NOT recommend this place!!!

I've been a customer for about a year. It's self-storage. Hasn't flooded or burned down yet, so two…read morestars I guess. In that year, the facility has been sold once, rates have increased twice, I've had to reconfigure autopay 3 times, and I've gotten bogus "sorry to lose you as a customer" messages twice. If you're on autopay, the automatic payment happens on the due date. If you log in on the due date, your account will always show "past due". When they raise the rates, the new rate doesn't go into effect until the due date. So if, say, you are a responsible person and always pay your bill before the due date ... surprise! You actually underpaid! Better double-check constantly! Every time their database forgets I'm paid up, I've had to call in, wait on hold for nearly an hour before talking to somebody who was able to confirm that no, my account was indeed paid in full, and they hadn't auctioned off all my stuff after yet another mysterious database error in their favor, gosh we have no idea why this keeps happening so sorry sir. I'm on hold again right now. Maybe every self-storage facility is this sketchy, but Store Space feels like they're just always looking for a way to steal my stuff and it requires constant vigilance and it sucks. I CAN NOT WAIT to get my things out of this place.

So I had to find a new place. Girl at counter would not show us how to use these codes when we signed up because she wanted to talk to her friends when we paid for this. " It's Easy" she said. Huey!!! Tried to get my money back...no way to get 3 months rent back for no access. Amex was no help. Plus, I now am paying for another place. Plenty of better places in town for the same $$$. I suggest using all others.

Had a problem where they suspected damage years ago and they had to check the storage unit…read more.. Didn't get much info but apparently it was ok? We came in and everything was fine but we should have been notified immediately. This year the price has gone up closer to almost another extra 25-30 dollars if I recall and that's a pretty big hike considering it was like 50. Also considering the fact we were *NOT* notified despite them assuring us they sent word out (only after the fact when called) so I'm not sure if that was sheer laziness by not checking all the boxes or if they were just trying to pull the wool over our eyes. We literally only found out upon paying it after the new year. No mail, texts, or anything. We're thinking about cleaning it out and bringing things home because moving everything somewhere else or finding someone to do that would be too much of a hassle as I'm very disabled and can barely get out of the house. Can't fault them for this but not a very good situation to be in and I still hold a lot of grief regarding my father and another relative's deaths which is what forced us to get a storage unit in the first place because of my father's sister locking us out when I was still basically a kid. She took the house and lives literally right down the street from where we ended up having to put our stuff. I feel bad for the staff because just judging by the way they worded things and their tone of voice when asked about the increase ('it's the owner') he sounds like a piece of work
