My frustration is with the cancellation system (which is very much like every other gym ive seen... I thought I found a gym that wouldnt nickel and dime if you cancelled a monthly plan. that was incorrect). I signed up for the $20 monthly plan. It says no commitment, whatever that means. When cancelling I still got charged $70 just to cancel. Really great feeling knowing I had to choose to either cancel my membership, eat another $20 despite not going to the gym as much lately (depression is a struggle), or get food/groceries. Disappointing. I tried to read what I could before signing up, but I guess I missed something that wasn't made very obvious. What does no commitment mean in this sense? I don't really understand now. This problem is not unique to this gym chain--This happens at most, if not all of them. Still I hoped theyd be different. Egg on my face. I will not return. I'd rather save money for my own weights and a treadmill at home. Oh well.

I think there's no better value in the Baltimore area. I've been to Merritt, and although it's closer to where I live, I refuse to pay those premium prices. I was a member of Under Armour Performance Center downtown, and although that space is spectacular, the parking was a nightmare. I drive 15 minutes each way to Gold's in Dundalk and I don't have to worry about parking and I have access to a world class gym. There's something about Dundalk, but the people here are friendly and polite. You don't get a douchey vibe here. The gym went through the $1M renovation roughly 4 years ago and they are still adding machines/equipment to this day. They shuffle equipment around from time to time and relocate/repurpose. It's neat seeing the transformation. A couple of gripes I have with this gym is the dumbbell rack and the weights in the wrong place. I've provided feedback on my issues with this for years. There used to be free weights all over the floor. This has improved, but members still do not place dumbbells where they belong. I think this gym needs to label the racks so members know where each weight belongs. It looks like they may have added or upgraded the racks, but there is still some improvement that can be made. Secondly, the men's locker room is pretty gross. It seems like they tried doing something with the lockers, but the toilets and floors are pretty nasty. I do my best to not have to go in there, but I don't know if they have the means to improve this space.

However, before I even stepped foot into the gym, multiple employees called and text me. I feel like this, and I am sure others do too, of I say I will be there on Monday, I will be there on Monday. Unfortunately, they will call and text you almost everyday, even after you share when you will take a tour. Look, I don't owe you any money, don't call me as if I do. This particular center is the closest one to my house so I was sad to find that it was closed for repairs. I was watching it like a hawk! I kept checking to see when it was open and it seems like the date kept being pushed further back. But fast forward and I saw an advertisement on Facebook about joining the Dundalk swim center. Imagine my excitement! I went in for a tour a couple days ago and I was even more excited when I saw the pool in person. I was given a tour, some insight on the best times to swim, and information about future swim lessons. The staff is very friendly and they're waiting for you all to come swim! It's not a very big pool, but the secret is that not many people know it's open. So today I had it all to myself aside from a few women who were doing water aerobics. The water is nice and warm but not too warm. I swam 2,000 yd and didn't feel like it was hot. Will, the operations director/life guard, is very friendly and will answer any questions you may have. By the way, it's a 25-yard pool. The locker room is nice with plenty of lockers, bring your lock for the day. They also have one of those machines to dry out your swim gear. Overall, it's a great pool and I'm glad that it's open! I'll be back regularly!

They also have ice cream and refillable water at all times. They even offer towels. The workers are always kind and helpful. The pool area is always clean and welcoming. Everyone who attends and goes to Merritt Clubs is always fun and nice. It's always a great vibe, especially in the summer. When the concession is closed, you can enjoy tremendous food options in the area. There is tons of parking and is easily accessible.

What concerned me most…read morewas what I perceived as a lack of safety and accountability around the pool during summer camp. In our experience, children were not consistently supervised in a way that protected other paying members, and we felt that the camps were prioritized over the regular membership. When we raised safety concerns after an incident involving an unsupervised child, we felt that responsibility was shifted onto us rather than the situation being addressed. We also observed lifeguards allowing behavior that, in our opinion, created unnecessary safety risks for other swimmers. My interactions with management were equally disappointing. Diane, the manager, spoke to me in a manner I found unprofessional during our discussion, and I recorded that interaction because I was so uncomfortable. When I later decided to cancel my membership, I expected to simply complete the cancellation paperwork. Instead, I was questioned by Liz in front of other people about why I was leaving and where I planned to go next, which I felt was inappropriate and embarrassing. The final comment that confirmed my decision to leave was being told that these issues would improve once school started because the summer camps would be over. That reinforced my impression that the camp program was being prioritized over the experience and safety concerns of year-round members. Since leaving, I've found another gym where I feel welcomed, respected, and where member concerns are taken seriously. I'm sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision.
