Compline Wine Shop, Napa

Privileged to be invited to a wine party as a guest of a member, this was quite the experience. Well organized and pretty crowded, there was a great spread of food and a sample of the sparkling wine. And while socializing, people just started buying bottles of wine and pouring them. I took one small pour of one and then a second of another, but since I wasn't planning on sharing the wealth, I opted to just nurse the second one for a while. Fun to talk to strangers and stretch my social mingling muscles with these folks. And yes, there is a lot of wine here. For someone like me who isn't a connoisseur, it's a bit overwhelming. But if you like wine and you're willing to spend money for excellent choices, this is the spot. [Review 21002 overall - 519 in California - 1987 of 2023.]

If you haven't had a chance to check out the dedicated wine shop opened by the Compline team, you should definitely put it on your short list. I really love the vibe of the space - minimalistic, with a huge mural showing many of the world's wine regions, and the centerpiece record player that's always spinning. It's a great place to duck in out of the brutal summertime Napa heat to grab a glass or two of some exceptional wines. They offer a number of wines by the glass, ranging in price from $14-25/glass - it's a pretty broad selection with something for everyone. Additionally, they offer some flights if you want to try a range of different wines. Perhaps the best value though is to pick up a bottle from their selection and enjoy it in the shop for a $30 corkage (though I heard this may decrease to $15 to match the restaurant). The selection is absolutely massive and while I did see some very expensive, well recognized labels on the shelf (Ponsot, for example), their selection tends to focus on smaller producers and even more obscure varietals, which is great! You may find some bottles at other shops a few dollars cheaper, but overall, the pricing is very reasonable. If you're looking for a special bottle to take home or looking to kill some time before a dinner reservation, definitely add the wine shop to your list.

Is it a bar? Is it a wine shop? Is it both? Absolutely! Make a stop, it's a neat experience.

They also have a wine club and I really like that it's typically a mixture of tourists and locals hanging out.

We were seated near the chef's table and loved watching the kitchen team in action through the window. We started with a fantastic bottle of Zinfandel , along with a Caesar salad and the Fisherman's Stew both were excellent. The highlight of the evening was the pork chop Milanese entrée that my wife and I shared, served with pasta. It was absolutely amazing and one of the best dishes we've had in a long time. The food, service, our waiter Talani was amazing the atmosphere, and overall experience were all outstanding. If you're visiting downtown Napa, I highly recommend stopping by Scala Osteria. Scala is truly a gem…read more If you take away just one thing from this review, let it be this: order the pork chop! This review comes after my second five-star visit to Scala, and it has firmly earned a spot on my list of must-visit restaurants in Napa. The restaurant is both elegant and inviting, with a beautiful ambiance that has a perfect balance between sophisticated and comfortable. The service has been exceptional on both visits--attentive, polished, and genuinely welcoming. On each visit, we dined family-style, sharing a salad, an appetizer, a pasta, and, of course, the famous pork chop. Both the chopped salad and Caesar salad were fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned for sharing. The Spaghetti with shrimp and clams, along with the Calamari di Monterey pasta, were absolutely outstanding--so much so that I'm still thinking about them days later. And now, the pork chop. I'm not entirely sure what culinary wizardry goes into creating this Pork Chop Milanese, but it is nothing short of extraordinary. The pork is pounded impossibly thin, fried to golden perfection, and coated in a delicately crisp crust that somehow remains light and airy. It's finished with a buttery lemon-caper sauce that adds just the right amount of brightness and richness. It sounds almost absurd to say that fried pork melts in your mouth, but somehow this one does. Every bite is perfectly balanced, SO tender, and honestly unforgettable. I left thoroughly impressed after my first visit, and after my second, I can confidently say this wasn't a fluke. I'll likely find myself returning to Scala every time I'm in Napa until I finally get this pork chop out of my system--which, at this point, may never happen.
