As a former BBQ hater, I used to avoid BBQ entirely because I have only experienced dry, tough meats. Stateline Road Smokehouse has converted me! The brisket is melt in your mouth tender (tendernism as the kids say!). It also has a beautifully pink smoke ring, which is a great indicator that it was cooked perfectly. We opted for the sweet BBQ sauce on the side, which went perfectly with bread and butter pickles. They were running a whole hog special for July 4th that was equally moist and dressed with a zingy vinegar that kept it from being too heavy. The tri-tip was also phenomenal - it still had a good bite and was a rosy blush. No grey, dried out BBQ here! The side options also feel more chef driven than any old BBQ joint with options like pork belly potato salad and 816 rub curly fries with bacon aioli. The restaurant runs like a well oiled machine, you order up front and pick up your feast after you pay or wait for table service. We enjoyed sitting in the outdoor patio as well, so it's a great place where furry friends are welcome. I'm really rooting for this place to succeed, however, on my visit the food quality wasn't on par with any other BBQ in the area. I ordered Ribs, brisket, links and chicken along with several sides. I took my wife and 3 kids to help devour this meal. Although the staff is friendly, the service provided was truely mediocre. During the ordering line, our family of 5 got completely ignored and I had to interrupt them to make sure they noticed we were in line. Our meats was served tepid, barely warm, even though they made us wait for the food like it was coming out the smoker. Our drinks weren't served with our order or called out that they were ready. The ribs were tough, probably due to the temperature and the rest of the meats were needing salt/seasoning. However, the best thing we got was the Rancho Gordo Beans and Greens which was absolutely delish. Even the kids denied the mac and cheese since it wasn't warm or hot. This might have been an off day for staff, but it wasn't a busy day and the owner was there greeting and serving food. I'm willing to try again but there are much better options, especially in neighboring cities. read more

Recently, I came to visit Stateline Road Smokehouse for the first time for lunch. There was no line nor wait to order! I was looking to chow down on some barbecue, Kansas City style!! I ordered the burnt ends, potato salad, and curly fries. The burnt ends were flavorful and very tender. It was some juicy pieces of meat. I loved this so much! The potato salad is not the traditional cold potato salad. It was warm, but, it was well seasoned and the potatoes were soft. Yum! The curly fries with aoili sauce were crunchy! No fry was cold nor limp. Well seasoned. There was some pickled onions on the side to enjoy. I ordered the Blood orange spritz for my cocktail. For only $9 AND if was refreshing to sip on a warm dat!! I ended the last of my visit sipping on some Rombauer chardonnay. Which was 6 ounces for $10. Inside the restaurant there are plenty of tables, water station clean bathrooms, and very nice staff. The staff comes and checks in every so often if I need to order anything else. There's also patio seating. It was too warm for me that day to eat outside. I will make the plan to do so next visit! I had no complaints or issue. Cornbread and sauces missed the mark for me, but the meat more than made up for it. Definitely going back! The full story: Finally! A BBQ joint that knows how to season meat! Stateline Road Smokehouse in Napa is the spot. We rolled in on Mother's Day and got hit with a line almost out the door -- always a good sign! Turned out the wait wasn't bad though, because they've got a slick assembly line going. I watched the girl slicing my brisket right next to the order-taker, then just followed my tray as it moved down the line. The space is gorgeous -- big, bright, and airy, with clear garage doors and windows across the front and a domed ceiling overhead. We ordered the brisket, burnt ends, BBQ chicken, mac n cheese, and hot water cornbread. Plates come with their house-made pickles, onions, and peppers. They even have stuff for non-carnivores -- the Cherry Wood-smoked Maitake & Greens (maitake mushrooms, lettuce, heirloom rice, marinated garbanzo beans, lemon vinaigrette) and the 18th & Vine Grain Bowl (barley, quinoa, sweet potato, arugula, parsnip, saffron egg, pickled onion, burnt orange vinaigrette) both looked fantastic. Maybe I'll grab one next time -- right next to a pile of brisket! On the drink side they've got wines by the glass, boozy slushies, draft beer, and batch cocktails. We stuck with water this round. Prices were a notch above what I'm used to in Sacramento, but for Napa they felt totally fair -- especially since this is probably the best BBQ around. The brisket was a steal at $19 for a half pound. The chicken at the same price for a half bird felt a bit steep, but I could be off on what's normal up there. The brisket was seasoned beautifully from the very first bite -- smoked to perfection, fall-apart tender. No knife needed. The burnt ends were my favorite of the whole spread. They had a splash of sauce on them but it wasn't needed -- those rubs hold their own. The BBQ chicken had a totally different vibe -- hard to describe, but it gave off Asian-influenced flavors. Solid on its own, but pairing it with the brisket and burnt ends was a misfire. The flavors just didn't play nice together. The mac n cheese was great. It wasn't baked, but it also wasn't mushy or overcooked like most places -- the noodles still had bite and the cheese was flavorful. Sadly, the cornbread was the weak link. A little dry, kinda bland, and not as thick as I like. About the size of a thin 6" pancake -- not really worth the price. The other miss for me was the BBQ sauces. Just not my thing flavor-wise. To be fair though, the owner built his whole business on those sauces and apparently ships them out by the pallet, so plenty of people clearly love them! It was awesome seeing Darryl Bell, the owner, back in the kitchen working his magic -- and get this, he's reportedly the first Black restaurateur in Napa since the 1800s! That made the warm welcome hit even harder. Even with the rush going on, he popped out to snap a picture with us and thank us for coming in. His business partner Jeremy was also working the floor, checking in on every table, and he stuck around to talk us up about Darryl's BBQ skills and how their partnership came together. Then during a lull, Darryl came back out and gave us the whole tour -- the cultural and historical design choices throughout the space (the building used to be a Quonset hut, which explains that cool domed ceiling) plus the murals on the back patio. They have daily specials! We came on a Sunday which they offer cornbread or hot chicken by itself or in a sandwich. Initially, I thought it was a combo the way it was written, but luckily staff clarified it. We got the cornbread, half rack of ribs, 1/2 lb of brisket, greens, Mac n cheese, burnt ends, and sausage. The cornbread was really yummy that we ordered another one to go! The ribs could have been more tender. The brisket was cool. The meat was room temp so while we were eating, it got cold fast. Mac n cheese was a favorite. The greens had great flavor but leaned on the saltier side. The burnt ends was the least favorite, it wasn't like the typical burnt ends we're used to. Staff are friendly. The space is spacious and they have lots of sinks to wash off your bbq hands. They also have several TVs all playing a different classic movie. We came by for bbq while staying in downtown Napa and were looking for a quick dinner. It was a bit late in the day so the smoked chicken was sold out but we were able to try the pork ribs and brisket. The brisket was a bit dry but I really liked the pork ribs which were juicy and super flavorful. I also really enjoyed the mac & cheese and the cole slaw which surprisingly had a spicy kick to it. I've been here a few times since the opening. I'm a huge fan of chef Darrell Bell. He actually greeted me when I walked in the door. All the staff was very kind. I got the brisket sandwich and small curly fry . Pro tip get everything on the side . So you can really enjoy the flavor from the brisket. Also get the original and spicy barbecue sauce on the side. The brisket had this pull . Amazing flavors melt it in your mouth. A lot of attention pull apart really easily. It was all meat, no fat. The ambience inside on a Friday afternoon was really inviting quiet. They had some vintage movies going on the TVs above free Stillwater on tap. I would be here every day of the week if the price point was a little bit more approachable. I read an article in this place when it was opening 2 years ago and have been wanting to try it ever since. A friend suggested we try it on Sunday and we did. There were quite a lot of people inside but we were able to park right in front. They also have a parking lot in the back. We came in and were greeted right away. After much deliberation I ordered a pork rib, a sausage, the beans and greens mix and the cornbread. I also tried the brisket. All were good. I would have liked a little more seasoning on the brisket it not a big issue it was still delicious perfectly smoked. The pork rib was well seasoned and tender. The beans and greens was my favorite item. I was skeptical and asked the owner for his opinion he said it was his favorite side so I tried it and was glad I did it is delicious. The cornbread pancake was ok. I enjoyed the pickled onions and pickles that came with the meal and the spicy barbecue sauce. The adult jolly rancher slushee was good too. I think our serve was Vanessa she provided excellent customer service. The owner was very nice he spoke with us about the restaurant, showed us the back patio and murals and even gave us some Kansas city history. First time trying this place, and Kansas City style Bbq. We saw this place on check please Bay Area,and were curious about the bbq! First impression looked like a car shop had been reimagined and redone kind of like a cafeteria style restaurant. You come in the front door and there's an old fashioned tub full of beers, and assorted caned cocktails. We grabbed a couple of Pabst blue ribbon beers. We had the ribs, brisket, chili oil, chicken, and Yukon gold potato salad.! Oh and also the burnt tips! The flavors were off the chart good! So tender and succulent, checked all the boxes for me! Tons of seating available as well as outside. The chef was so kind he took the time to show us the cool murals in the back. Allowed us time to appreciate the art and history as well as the food. I thought everything was perfect except the beans, they needed some rice, easy fix when I got home. This was also my first time having hot potato salad it was delicious. I am well traveled and there is a lot of better BBQ places across America than California, but Darryl created a place in California now that gives me that Texas/Kanas City BBQ feel and taste. After hearing many good things about stateline I decided to make my way to finally try it out. Unfortunately, it did not meet the expectations I had for the amount of good things I heard. We got a variety of things to try including the ribs, mac n cheese, burnt ends, potato salad, and brisket. Sadly, everything was kind of disappointing. The ribs were pretty dry and lacked flavor as well as came with a droplet of sauce. Wish it came with more. It seemed as if things had been sitting out under the heat lamp for a while. The brisket was pretty basic and nothing special. The Mac and cheese was the only decent thing. The staff were friendly and polite and came around a couple times to check in. The sausage is excellent, the brisket is consistently good, and it's the kind of place I'd recommend to anyone visiting Napa looking for great tasting and aesthetic food. Solid tasting KC bbq (although, disclaimer, I've never tried KC bbq before!) As we came on a weekend, they had their dino rib, which was massive (see photo below). It was fall apart tender. The bbq sauces are self serve and there are spicy, original, and sweet. My husband loved their bbq sauce and so we took a bottle home (they sell their bottled bbq sauce at the counter). - The potato salad was odd... it came warm and the aioli tasted funny. There was no garlic flavor, or salt really. It was quite bland. Don't recommend unless you like plain, creamy sauced potato. + Mac and cheese was solid. Not super flavorful, but solid and creamy - topped with bread crumbs. Would get again. +/- Burnt ends were just okay. The brisket was a little tough and dry. Would rather get the dino rib next time. Portion was bigger than I expected. We definitely ordered too much food overall. + dino rib was fantastic! quite pricey at around $40 I think? And on weekends only I believe Wish they would give more pickles! The tang really helped break through the heaviness of all the meat. Or could I order them as a side extra? Overall, I'm bumping it up to a 4 for their housemade bbq sauce, and the dino rib. I'm not personally a huge bbq fan, but if I was, I could see the vision. The space is large and open inside. If I could rate this experience over 5 stars I would. Perfect grill and smoke on the meat. The pickled veg is a great pop of acid. Most bbq places miss the mark on sides, but I will be taking a road trip for these greens and beans. They're so good, they've ruined any other greens for me....I'm still thinking about them. Stopped here on the way home from a trip. Everything looked great it was so hard to choose! My family got sandwiches with potato salad and i got a quinoa bowl. The staff were extremely friendly and our food was out very quickly. Its essentially an assembly line for food. The building was really cool. I am not sure if it was built to be a restaurant but it was nice. It was very open and almost had like a modern barn feel. It was VERY clean. There were people standing around waiting to clean as soon as we finished. The food was great! Tasted like legit southern bbq. The potato salad was warm which is my favorite way to have it. The flavor was great, perfect balance of mayo and mustard (if they even used that in it. It wasn't overpowering so it's hard to say, I really liked that). Not a huge fan of sweet pickles so if you aren't don't buy the side. My bowl had a great flavor combination. I added smoked chicken. That combined with the crunchy sweet potato, pickled red onions, the saffron egg finished with the sweet vinaigrette were great palette combinations! Can't wait to go back and try the salad! We stopped by around 2:00 PM based on the strong hype and made a point to visit while returning from Calistoga. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of expectations. We ordered the baby back ribs, brisket, and burnt ends. The ribs were a major letdown, overly tough, dry, and difficult to eat. Cutting between the bones was a struggle even with a knife. When I raised the issue, the chef dismissed it as their "style," claiming the meat is intentionally not meant to fall off the bone. That explanation doesn't justify the lack of tenderness, it simply felt like poor execution. The brisket was the only redeeming item! Tender, flavorful, and done right. Everything else, failed to impress and didn't come close to the reputation this place seems to carry. Overall, aside from the brisket, this was a disappointing and overhyped experience. Full disclosure: I was born and raised in the Deep South (GA). I *know* bbq. And I like all types of bbq from around the world, but especially GA, NC, TN, TX, and KS. If I walk into a bbq restaurant and don't smell smoke, I turn around and go somewhere else. So, our daughter recommended we give this place a try and boy am I glad we did! First step through the door, I got a good whiff of the smoke. The place smells like Heaven on Earth. We ordered: *1 (GIANT) Beef Rib - holy cow, so tender and juicy. The bark on the outside was perfection. *Half-rack Baby Back Ribs - again so tender the bone slid right out and excellent smoky flavor. *Small Burnt Ends - I'll admit this wasn't what I wanted due to previous experience with dry, hard or too chewy burnt bits. This was nothing like that! Juicy, tender and full of flavor. *Small Beans & Greens - Where I come from, there are no beans in the greens but this was an absolutely delicious twist. Greens and protein? It's health food! LOL *Large Potato Salad - oh wow, warm potato salad was a hit. Talk about comfort food! * We tried all 3 of their bbq sauces. Honestly, none of the meats needed sauce IMO, and the sauces were too sweet for my taste. But of the 3, the "spicy" one was our favorite. And, because we are those people, we also ordered: *Banana Cream Pie - individual little pie pans of very creamy pie with fresh banana on the bottom and cracked cookie on top. *Apple Pie - this comes with a side of soft serve (your choice vanilla, chocolate or swirl) and is also an individual dose of Grandma's love.Big chunks of crispy apple topped with fresh granola, which they quickly toast in the oven before serving. I'm not sure where to start except to say go! The brisket is smoked for 16 hours and the result is super tender and flavorful. The hot water cornbread was a large pancake, not what I expected so delicious! The macaroni and cheese was creamy goodness and the collard greens with bean were genius! The food was so good I can't wait to go back! It's a fast casual restaurant, you order down a line but a waiter follows you to your table and brings food and drinks to your table. Throughout our dining experience the servers asked us if we needed anything and even offered our table to meet the owner. Darryl Bell, came by and we praised his food and he was just wonderful. This is the first black/owned restaurant in Napa. The BbQ is really very good and I highly recommend. read more

Good BBQ is hard to come by in California, but Stateline Road Smokehouse is delivering a slice of Kansas City style BBQ to Napa Valley. Tried a few items, my favorite being the brisket & the burnt ends. The Tri-Tip sandwich was good, but a bit pricey for its size. The Mac & Cheese wasn't my preferred style but the taste is definitely there. And you can't go wrong with a good side of coleslaw. The BBQ sauce they have is honestly not my favorite. There's a taste to it that I don't really enjoy. Maybe it's just preference, but I prefer a more standard BBQ sauce flavor. Very friendly staff with an efficient operation. This was our first stop before wine tasting and it didn't disappoint, we ordered: - Mushroom salad (forgot the name) 3.5/5 - we asked for dressing on the side which should have been a type of vinaigrette, but was given a thick white sauce instead that was reminiscent to mayo. Mushrooms were great, the other lettuce leaves were fairly basic. - Half BBQ chicken 4.5/5 - also got it with sauce on the side and it was very tasty, not dry, just right - Half lb brisket 4.5/5 - we asked for leaner pieces and even then, they were moist. I can't believe it took me and my wife over a year to get over to Napa's best BBQ spot. As a native Kansas Citian, it was refreshing to walk into a restaurant with smells and sounds of home. The music playing was soulful and provided a warm energy that was welcoming. The staff was bright and cheery despite the crowd and noise inside. Ordering was easy and following your tray as food was added down to the register almost felt like being back in school. The three different kinds of sauce that chef Darryl had created complimented the meats perfectly. For the pulled pork, I'd recommend the sweet sauce to enhance the tender pork. For the spicy sauce, the succulent burnt ends absorbed the peppery goodness along with the acidity of the vinegar that is present in KC BBQ sauce. The regular sauce has great flavor that I want to try on the ribs next time. I believe it can go on anything and I bought a jar to take home. The greens tasted just as my mother would make during the summer in my childhood. The banana pudding was served chilled with bits of an orange zest cookie. I love banana pudding with vanilla wafers, but this new twist had my taste buds dancing around. Unexpectedly, I've had barbecue at 3 different places in Napa within a month. I came by Stateline Road Smokehouse with a friend around 2pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy. There's a small to park at in the back, with a nice outside patio that has umbrellas for shade, as well as plenty of seating inside the large spacious interior of the building. Service was friendly, and helped bring out our food as well. We definitely over-ordered, and got the brisket, ribs, burnt ends, and the potato salad, cole-slaw, mac and cheese, and banana pudding to share. The brisket was phenomenal and fall-apart tender; the ribs were also good but not as amazing, and the burnt ends were tasty though a little heavy and too smothered in sauce. The potato salad was especially tasty - plenty of dill and other herby goodness mixed in. Coleslaw wasn't as notable, and mac and cheese while good was lacking a little in flavor. We liked the banana pudding, especially the crispy cookie bits ontop. Overall, Stateline Road Smokehouse is a great bbq option in Napa - though a little on the pricier side - I'll definitely be back for the brisket. read more

I enjoyed my first visit so much that I had to run it back! Just as before, the staff were welcoming and helpful and the ambiance is great! Clean, spacious, and modern with large TV's playing nostalgic movies! This time around, I tried the "special fish" that was cooked to perfection, along with the Mac and cheese. First time trying Stateline Road Smokehouse. You order first with a menu on the board as you enter . We tried Burnt Ends (small). - beef brisket ends in a cup Half Pork ribs- 18th and Vine salad - for the wife Potato salad . Firstly, place was huge. No need to worry about seating. There's a station to get more bbq sauce, plates and boxes to go. On the far wall, you can serve yourself a cup of water and a station in the dining area to wash your hands Ambiance - 5 stars. Chill place with country music playing and tv to view. Very spacious and not cramped at all. Staff and service - 5 stars. Friendly and chill with the staff. Now the food review. Pork ribs- kinda dry. They have a heat lamp to warm food prior to paying that they put the food in. I wanted to enjoy the pork ribs but was kinda tough. Mind you this was at 1220 pm on a Saturday. 3.5 stars Burnt ends- tasty and easy to eat. The bbq sauce that you can get various ones on the self serve area was nice to try different heat. 5 stars Potato salad- not your typical cold salad but was warm. This was a fav of mine and wife. 5 stars 18th and vine salad- something new for wife and she liked it. 5 stars Overall, we like the vibe and atmosphere and would go back and try different things when we are in Napa. read more

This place is a well-deserved 5/5! Wow! I was impressed by the food, the service, and especially the restaurant's interior. The meat is cooked and seasoned to perfection, and don't even get me started on the mac and cheese (it's the best I've ever had). I really loved the layout of the restaurant; you can tell how much the business enjoys bringing smiles to its customers. Excellent service from the entire staff. My first, but not last visit to Stateline was over the weekend. Very clean, sleek interior with a clearly labeled entrance /exit to make for fluid flow. Menu shows meats, sandwich/bowl options, and sides. We went with an array; 1/2 rack baby back ribs, chipotle sausage, small pulled pork - all topped with OG sauce. Both sides were savory- the coleslaw (which had jicama great consistent) and the potatoe salad (which was loaded with garlic- YUM!) We even saw the chef, Darrel come out and was taste tasting what was being served - quality control at its finest. Bonus; they have the most friendly and accommodating staff who goes around to bring you water and clear your trays (although it is self service). Can't wait to return! read more

Super nice, spacious space and friendly staff!! There is ample seating (indoors and dog friendly outdoors). Thoughtful hand wash stations for sticky BBQ hands and clean unisex restrooms. Our food experience was a bit disappointing; maybe we didn't order the right things on our first visit. We ordered the tri tip sandwich - it was beautifully presented like the rest of the items we ordered - but the meat was super chewy and had giant pieces of fat attached. We enjoyed the beer, the mac n cheese and maitake salad (though I can't say we could taste smoking). All salads are heavily overdressed so suggest getting the dressings on the side if you like it lightly dressed. The coleslaw was also swimming in its dressing. Bottom line, one of the nicest BBQ restaurants I've been to but the food didn't hit the spot for us. We will try different items next time. read more

Visited on a Saturday around 2pm and ordered takeout for a group of 5. No wait when we arrive, there were a few other guests but plenty of open tables and seats in the restaurant and on the patio. Bright open spacious dining area. Food: Brisket - really tender, succulent and a great lean to fatty ratio, nice smokiness with a mild spice rub that lets the flavor of the beef shine Burnt Ends - very good, super smoky and highly seasoned, large portions was maybe two cups worth of burnt ends, meat was tender but not fall apart, not too fatty, definitely worth a try Pork ribs - good, these had a light glaze, a little sweet smokiness, meat was tender but still held onto the rib so very well prepared just preferened the brisket options over the ribs Chipotle Sausage - good, plump and juicy, very savory with a hint of spiciness, great snap from the casing, really meaty and a great add on if it's available Mac and cheese - very good, rich, creamy, salty, cheesey topped with some seasoned bread crumbs, pasta was perfectly cooked, if you like Mac and cheese don't think you'll be disappointed Beans and green - very good, stewed collards with white beans and pork, savory and hearty but with a subtle acidity that made it a great flavor contrast to the rich meats, definitely worth a try if you visit Pickles - a side they provided, mix of cucumber and onions, a great sweet tangy additional to the meal BBQ sauces - 3 options, a standard, sweet and spicy, all were good and complimented the meat well, the spicy in particular was my favorite adding a bit of subtle sweet heat Service was good, friendly and efficient, order at the counter and follow your tray to the register to pay. Overall really enjoyed the BBQ at Stateline, every dish we tried was delicious really can't go wrong.
