They do a great job of picking up the compost most of the time. However, sometimes they make bonehead decisions which leave their customers in the lurch. For example, this year they decided to deal with Thanksgiving they would skip all their Wednesday customers until the following week. This left those of us who have our compost picked up on Wednesday with a full bucket of compost right before we went into the Thanksgiving holiday the very next day with large family gatherings. So now we have an entire weeks worth of compost in our bucket plus the compost from a large family gathering plus, we have to wait a week while we fill up our bucket before it ever gets picked up. I don't know what genius came up with that idea but it definitely does not show management's ability to walk a mile in their customer shoes. read more

I have been wanting to compost for a long time, as I love to cook and have a lot of food waste, but I'm not a gardener and so the work to do so myself didn't make any sense. I was so happy to find Compost Crew, which is not only such a reasonably-priced and easy service, but their customer service is absolutely top-notch. I've had bins stolen off the sidewalk--they've replaced them. I've had to cancel because of financial issues, they've been willing to let me keep the materials for when I can resume, and I have every intention of doing so! I honestly wish I could work with them in some way, they seem to have a really ethical and empowered approach to everything they do! read more

I composted on my own before we moved to Rockville, where we then had access to Compost Crew's service. On my own was tedious, smelly, and expensive - I tried lots of devices and gave up after 6 months, with little to show for it. Having Compost Crew show up once a week to pick up our scraps was so much easier (not to mention odor-free) and I got free, quality, compost as a reward (plus the right to buy more at a very low price). The drivers always came to say hi to my dog when they picked up - everyone I met in the company is friendly and energetic. We had to move recently - I wish I could take them overseas with me. If we move back, they will be my first call. read more

A great service ! A responsive team with an easy to use online platform to manage pick ups.

The idea of the service is great but the execution is awful. I would not recommend for the following reasons: 1. Multiple times the driver failed to pick up my bin even though it was out by the curb where I always placed it. The driver would mark it as not present and Compost Crew's response was to tell me I'd have to wait until the next week, without any credit for the missed pickup. 2. Customer service only had a veneer of friendliness, but was not customer-oriented and did not solve any of my issues. 3. When they ran out of compost bags, they just said customers should throw the food into the bin itself. This had consequences. The bins already get so filthy because the compost liner bags allow liquid to seep through. But the bins became a birthing spot for maggots that quickly spread to our trash and recycling bins, and turned that area of the yard into a fly-infested zone. If you're going to use this service, you'll have to wash and sanitize your own bins weekly, or else see above. I will say canceling was easy and painless, and I am grateful to them for that. read more

I used CC previously in Baltimore and was quite happy with the service. However, in the last six months I have restarted since moving to DC and have had nothing but recurrent problems. Similar to other reviews I have had more problems with pick up than successful ones. Multiple times no liner bag was left necessitating putting materials directly into the bin which led to maggots. Four times I received a memo that my bin could not be located despite it being in the same place weekly. After much hassle I spoke to a customer service representative and was assured that my account would be flagged as "high priority" and reviewed that the location of the bin was noted in the account. The next week the same thing happened. Unfortunately the most frustrating part is that the customer service is impossible to contact. There is a phone number that is never answered, though VMs will be responded to in a day during business hours. Emails are delayed. Sometimes the missed pick up was refunded, sometimes it was not. Though the responses are kind and promise change, nothing changes. I was very happy with the bin on wheels and the compostable liner but I will have to return to Veteran Compost as Compost Crew cannot get themselves together. read more

The crew works hard and efficiently to allow me to reduce my pollution on this world. The price is comparable and a good value for me. If you call them you get to speak to a human. Composting is great and I signed up for Compost Crew service a year ago to improve my efforts. The first issue is that the reduced rate I was offered for signing up at the Silver Spring Farmers Market was only honored for a month. I was informed by a customer service representative when I followed up about it that there was an error and they would give me the discount... but only for that month. This is not the original offer that was made by the rep when I signed up. The second issue is that I'm paying $32 a month for my bins to be picked up intermittently. Almost half of my scheduled pick ups lately have not happened. I have received messages that my bin was missing when it was clearly visible from the driveway, then other times my bin is emptied and bag replaced even when it's not on the sidewalk out front, but on my porch. They must have some drivers that are doing their jobs well and others that aren't. It's frustrating that a company with a great purpose can be hampered by inconsistent service. And what's more, I would rather call to speak to someone while the drivers are still on route and can come back instead of having to wait another week for service. Having a customer service number that someone answers during business hours is the least a business can do. It looks like digging a compost hole in the ground may be a better option. read more

I really wanted to like these guys. It was great for the first several months & then they expanded too fast or lost a good driver or something, but my compost stopped being collected at the end of summer. I live on a corner. When I signed up there was an opportunity online to describe where I put my trash, which is on the side of my house -- not the side with my actual street address. No problems at the beginning, but now either the office staff is lazy about conveying client info to the driver or the driver him/herself is too lazy to pay attention to client details. This week's compost (scheduled to be picked up today) is now on its 4th week outside waiting for collection. Forget customer service. The phone goes unanswered as do emails. When you do get a call or a written response, it's an apology & a promise to get it next week. The first couple times I was missed, I had to complain in order to get pick up the following week. Now Felix just emails & says he'll send someone over the next garbage day & the driver cruises by the front door & says there's no bucket. After the photos and messages I'm astonished that Felix hasn't spoken to the driver about it just to get rid of me. So unless you love the idea of composting SO much that you're willing to be patient & or ornery every week until they get their drivers on track, FORGET IT. read more

When we moved back to the DC area, one of the first things we did was to sign up for service from Compost Crew. It has helped us significantly reduce our general waste. While there have been some hiccups, we always get a quick response from customer service or a clear heads up that there will be a delay. We have the larger bin and definitely use it. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!!! For the past month, we received several "stop alert: bin not found notification(s)" under false pretenses. Either one of their employees shared false information with Compost Crew about the status of our compost bins or somehow, after more than 15 months of being their customer, they were unable to locate our house despite Compost Crew having our home address on record. I have since demanded an immediate prorated refund of my $342 annual service charge and am awaiting Compost Crew's response. What a lousy way to run a business and what a lousy way to treat a customer. PS The online form requires me to give Compost Crew at least one star. It's too bad "zero stars" isn't an option. read more

This would be one of my favorite companies, but as some of the latest reviews have stated, Compost Crew has become very inconsistent in the past couple of months. The first or second time they missed a pickup, the CEO or president emailed (likely all customers) that they were having employee issues. Ok, that happens; I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I chalked up the "bin not found" to a new employee learning his/her routes. But then they've missed several other times and I've left the bin out for 2-3 days after the pickup date and they still don't pick it up even after daily messages to them. Recently they've been falsely recording that the pickup was successful. No answer from my calls, and tardy email responses are the same old "sorry, we'll pick up next week." I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

After being a customer of Compost Crew for three years I could not reccomend them enough. The customer service is top notch, the ease of use of the customer portal is fabulous, and they provide metrics of how food waste you divert from landfill! I live in a high rise apartment building in Arlington and have experienced issues with my bin for pick up on more than one occasion. Not only did the crew at Compost Crew promptly find a solution, they've provided me with a new bin and also worked with me and my apartment complex to confirm a solid pick up location. Plus you can't beat the price and being reimbursed every time you skip a service. I could not reccomend them enough! read more

We were Compost Crew customers since 2020, but as other reviewers have noted, their residential service tanked in the last year. I stopped receiving compostable liners for the 5-gallon bin. Then drivers started missing our collection but marking the stop as serviced. For the missed pickups, customer service's answer each time was that they couldn't do a makeup collection and that I would need to hold my compost to the following week. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I went a four-week period without collection. Their driver even missed our final pickup! Take your business elsewhere. Compost Cab & Veteran Compost are great alternatives. read more

I want to love Compost Crew, but in the last few months, it's been so unreliable. In mid-August I received a Stop Alert notice that my bag of compost had been delivered. It hadn't. So I called (impossible to get a live person so you have to leave a voicemail). Long story short--multiple calls, multiple emails, multiple promises from CC, and I still have not received the bag of compost. Also, the bags they supply you with for your bin are almost always sopping wet (why?) and difficult to open. I really want to love this service but it seems administratively disorganized. Composting is too important to discourage paying customers like this! read more

It has been an easy way to reduce waste while not feeding landfills through our garbage can, or waterways through our garbage disposal. Look at the date of reviews when considering this service. They have made large strides (in my opinion) to improve service in the last two years. I have been a customer for those two years and have had a wonderful experience. I always had success getting my issues resolved with customer service, they almost always answer a phone during business hours. Only one time did I not receive a bin liner, and their suggestion to use a paper back worked just as well. We moved locations during our service and though there was a hiccup finding where to put the bin the first week in our new place, it was quickly remedied. No one is perfect, but I think Compost Crew does an excellent job. read more

Really fantastic company. I looked at all of the options in Baltimore, and while all of these companies seem to be doing good work, Compost Crew had the most flexibility as far as what you can actually send them (for example, they take meat bones while other businesses don't). The crew, especially Jacquie, are always super responsive and accommodating, and the bins they give you are airtight and don't smell at all.
