My laptop would no longer boot after I allowed it to download a Windows cumulative update. I'm the family IT person, but this problem resisted every attempt to fix. Since Windows came preloaded on my laptop and the recovery disk would not work, I was thinking that I might be forced to buy a new one. I found John on Yelp and he was quickly able to get Windows running correctly again. He was also able to repartition my disk to get back some wasted unused space, so I actually have more storage capacity now along with a laptop that is running faster than before. Just a note of thanks to John who quickly helped me diagnose the major issue i had with a crashed Seagate 3TB external HDD (never buying Seagates again based on their double digit failure rates!... Look it up.) John spent time to determine the probable cause that required a "level 2" clean room fix and provided 2 good recommendations (go see my Kotar review).... The end of my story is that i recovered over 600GB worth of priceless family photos and video taken since 2001.... John was like that perfect doctor who calmly talked you through the situation.... I saw all the 5 star reviews on here so I called John about my laptop being unable to boot despite trying to do startup repair and booting up in safe mode. Normally this is an issue that I would be able to resolve but this time around I had no answer for the problem and I'm glad I went to John. Basically he runs a small computer repair business at his home. Make sure to call him before you get to the address...I made the mistake of going to the location first assuming that there was going to be a storefront. He has many years of experience working with computers so I was confident that he would be able to solve my problem which he did. John is amazing. I was traveling for work, staying locally with family. While on my trip, my laptop hard drive crashed, leaving me without a computer for work during crucial meetings. The blue screen is not your friend. I called John, and he was able to fit me into a very busy schedule at the end of a week with literally zero notice. He had a spare drive thankfully, which he installed and configured, and even though he thought the data recovery component was not going to happen after seeing how badly messed up my drive was --ended up spending extra time and was able to recover ALL my data from my old drive! All of this for a very affordable price and with what amounted to a 48 hour turnaround time. He has years of experience with computers, having built large scale computer systems over many years, and is extremely knowledgeable. He's very matter of fact, tell me the problem, let me diagnose and fix it kind of attitude. Which is exactly what I needed, so I am very happy. He also is extremely busy wearing different hats, so I was totally fine with fitting into his schedule as he had time because hey I was springing my problem onto him with no notice, I was just thankful he had any time to give me. I found John on craigslist after our much loved nearly decade old PC imploded after my sister attempted to synch her iPhone. It was time to get a new computer anyway. I picked him because honestly his ad was grammatically correct, everything was spelled correctly and he to the point. I emailed John and he got right back to me. When I spoke with him on the phone he told me what he figured the problem was and said he could most likely fix it. If he could not he would not charge. The man has several decades experience with computers so I figured he knows what he is talking about. I dropped our computer off at his home and he took it apart right on the spot. He had several people's PC's and laptops in his office with 4 monitor stations at his own desk. I know very little about technology but I sat in a comfy leather desk chair dangling my feet and watched him test every option he could think of on his own computer. He said he would have to take overnight to work on the hard drive. Long story short he was able to recover EVERYTHING off of the hard drive and burn it on to two discs. He recycled everything but the hard drive which he gave us as a paperweight. :) The best part about the experience is that his fees are so reasonable; he only charges for the actual time worked on the issue. My husband and I went to tall John (I am only 4'11") to get a second opinion about my damaged hard drive. He "listened" to the sounds my hard drive made by inserting it in a hard drive plugged in caddy, and by that, he was able to discern that my poor hard drive had passed away, and that my data could only be retrieved by specialists. I am one of the owners of a local wine bar. This past Saturday, our computer crashed, leaving me dead in the water, so to speak, and unable to conduct any transactions. In a blind panic, I contacted John, based on his rating AND that the fact that he is local. I explained my situation and he came out in 15 minutes - ON A SATURDAY. He quickly diagnosed the problem, made a run to local electronics company to get a part, installed the part - and cleaned out the inside of the tower, which was filthy from years of neglect - and got my server back up and running. We quickly discovered that there was also an issue with our POS (Point-of-Sale) program, so I had to get the phone with this company. John's work was done, but he stayed and helped us explain the issue to the tech on the phone. John left, but called back later to check on us. We were still trying to solve the problem so John CAME BACK to try and help us again! He stayed for about an hour and a half. He did all he could, but the issue was clearly not an easy fix and had to be resolved by the POS company. I tried to pay John for his time, but he refused to accept it. The issue went unresolved overnight. John called me the next morning to check in again! He even stopped by to offer further assistance! Unbelievable. John is not your average IT repair flunky or young hipster. He has 30 years experience as a computer and IT executive. He's written software and managed teams for some BIG companies over the years. He now has another full-time business, but does this "on the side" out of compassion and a sincere desire to help people that are less knowledgable than he and vulnerable to incompetence and overcharging. He is friendly, patient, extremely knowledgable, very professional - and VERY fairly priced. He could easily charge more. He gave me some suggestions on how to improve our network and its functionality (which I plan to implement) and even called one of his friends, a "network guy" to see if he'd come by and help us "clean things up." So we'll be doing that very soon too. What began with a simple call for a quick technical fix ended up as a full-service network assessment - one that will, without question, save us from much inevitable headache and hardship that was waiting for us down the road. John is awesome!! True professional and integrity. 2 characteristics that are extremely hard to come by these days in the hard drive recovery business/home computer repair. Let me provide the situation first. My external hard drive had crashed from a fall to the floor. I could hear the disc turn however it did not show on my computer as connected. The first repair shop I went to charged my $35 to diagnose the problem and basically said that he had to send it out to a clean lab which would cost me at least $1000. WHAT!!! So before I was going to take that kind of a hit I needed a second opinion. My wife said you need to do whatever it takes since we had all of our 7 and 2 year old pics on this drive. I found John on Yelp and he said bring it on over. He was able to read the drive on his recovery software and told me to get a new drive so that he could start the transfer process. I was on pins and needles waiting for this to complete since of course I was skeptical considering what my first repair shop had said. Amazingly all my pics were transferred and here is the crazy part. John only charged my $100!!! Goes to show how crooked and lazy other shops can be. I don't even think they tried. I was charged $35 and potentially $1000 for a repair that John had completed successfully in his own living room. Here is the integrity part. While viewing all the pics with my new hard drive, my kids and were playing and accidentally hit the new drive... It was the same thing all over again. I called John (embarrassed) and he said buy a new hard drive and bring it on over. I knew the cost and handed him $100 and he said no only $60 this time. That is a real stand up thing to do. When John couldn't fix the screen on my laptop, he brought it to a specialist, negotiated a fair price from them, oversaw the repair, and only charged me for one hour of his time. He spent more time than that teaching me things about my computer--why keeping stuff on the desktop makes it run slower, for instance. He's personable, thoughtful, honest, fair and smart--really knows what he's doing, and takes pride in getting something done right. He's more interested in getting it right than in getting paid. It was such a successful experience that I left the machine with him for an upgrade to Win 7 from Vista, plus a brilliant tune-up, which I highly recommend. My machine feels brand-new. Next week I'm bringing in the rest of our computers and fix our home network. You can't ask for better service and expertise than John provides. I cracked my HP laptop computer screen. It is 2011 model that I just purchased four months ago. I use it for work so needed it fixed quickly. I did my research and quickly determined that these kinds of parts aren't readily available the first year after a laptop is released. I started with HP support. A nice but heavily accented support person quickly shifted the conversation to selling me a new laptop at a discounted rate. That's not what I wanted yet he continued on. I finally hung up and they called me back repeatedly for two days. BAD! That's when I found John. I chose the latter, got the screen in 3 days, took it to John's house one evening, had a shiny, fixed laptop available for me early the next morning. My neighbor Bill R. recommended John to me. I was going to buy two of his new computers. I dropped off my first one for data transfer and he said it would be ready the next day. When I called he told me my CNC software was so old (1994) it wouldn't run on Windows 7. Had bad viruses, a roaring fan from dust, and 2 1/2 years of neglect. John fixed it right up in a short time, and had it clean inside with my desktop organized in an efficient way, and with virus protectors working and easy to access. I had a crashed hard drive and being in a tech company made me pretty handy about this kind of things as well. I knew there was a good chance I could fix it by doing a PCB transplant. I ordered a donor board but needed someone with soldering skill to move the ERPROM from the old PCB to the new one. I called John and he invited me over to his house that night. He spent a few hours that night helping me inspecting the drive and trying different methods of recovery. At the end, he told me that he would rather not earn the money because his soldering tool was not precise enough. He didn't want me to risk losing any data. Instead he recommended me to go to someone with better soldering tools. I had a lot of respect for that. I wanted to pay John for his time and he wouldn't charge me a penny. He said "but I just made a friend". During the night, I had the opportunities to witness in person how John treated his customers calling in and how diligently he worked for them. Numerous neighbors recommended Mr. Eichinger for general computer repair, so I went to his office to describe my problem. I had a vexing and mysterious problem with Internet access. I expected to have to haul the entire desktop tower into the shop and leave it there, possibly for days. But after describing my situation in detail, he offered me one piece of advice, which I went home and executed. And voila! my trouble is gone! I called him to tell him of my success and thank him (and to tell him that I would not be bringing the machine in to him after all) and he was extremely gracious and thankful himself for the polite gesture.
