I spilled hot chocolate on my 3 month old MacBook Air and the techs at Computerland were helpful, reassuring, and quick with the repairs. They helped me back up my data, replaced the damaged parts, and cleaned the remainder of the logic board that was not damaged. I got the computer back in 3 days and the cost was under $400. The Apple store quoted me nearly $800 and said they would need to replace the entire logic board, which was unnecessary and wasteful. In response to the manager's claim that they're sorry about my "less than great" experience. First of all, I've waited 3 months to post this on yelp hoping that Computerland would address my issues. 3 months for them to get in touch and exemplify their 'great' customer service. 3 months for them to reverse charges for services never performed nor requested. 3 months to admit their techs did absolutely nothing and this was a total scam on their part. This isn't about diagnostic fees. I would have been happy to pay the $80 fee as originally agreed upon had they actually attempted to recover the data but were unable to. But instead, they never attempted to recover the data, and charged a cleaning fee when nothing was actually cleaned. Yes, these photos were taken after their 'services' had been provided. I did bring these issues up at the time of pick-up and instead of admitting they did not do what was agreed upon, or work out a 'deal,' I was told to pay their 'fees' in order to get my property back. I called several times to speak to a manager and talk about these issues, and all I ever got was 'The manager is out off the office/unavailable/helping someone else. I'll leave a message and he'll call you back.' 3 months later and a yelp review and someone says they will now review all their files!? I can't wait for them to actually respond in a meaningful way! Anyone with Apple products should avoid this place. Wait the week for the appointment at the Apple store or find another merchant. read more

I went to computerland a few weeks ago. My computer wouldn't turn on. I called Lenovo and they walked me through their diagnostic process and determined that my hard drive crashed and so they sent me a new one. I took the laptop to Computerland to recover the data from my hard drive. Computerland somehow (and in less that 15 minutes) recovered the laptop to its pre-broken state without having to even extract data or replace the hard drive. Thanks for nothing Lenovo. Thanks a ton Computerland. Computerland was courteous and knowledgeable. Very good customer service. Their price was reasonable compared to other places I had called. They also gave me a small student discount and gave me a 20% coupon on the way out. The owner genuinely cared about establishing a very good reputation and made sure I was totally satisfied. My laptop suddenly just died. I thought all was lost until I got to computer land and they said it could be saved. So they spent three days diagnosing what was wrong with my laptop . And two weeks later, I Got my Toshiba laptop fixed here. He told me it took longer because it was a bit more difficult but I was so happy they could back everything up for me. I am extremely dissatisfied with the service I received from Computerland on two separate occasions, both involving Apple products. In both instances, the devices I took to Computerland for repair were functioning when I brought them in, and were no longer functioning or usable when Computerland returned them to me. iPhone Battery Replacement: On May 24, 2018, I brought in my iPhone 7 for a battery replacement, after making an appt through Apple's support website. My phone was fully functional when I brought it in. I was told the cost to replace my battery was $29 plus tax ($31.68) and my phone would be ready for pickup by 3:00 pm (appt at 10:00 am). Computerland did not meet this 3:00 deadline and when I arrived to pick up my phone, it was no longer working--the home button was broken, rendering the phone completely unusable. Computerland told me they would get me a "new" phone but it would not be available until the next day at the earliest. I was given a loaner phone to use over the weekend, as I was headed out of town (and almost missed my flight because I was trying to deal with Computerland's incompetence). When I arrived to pick up my "new" phone after returning from my trip, the Computerland technician insisted that I still owed $31.68. I told the technician that I did not think I should be charged anything, as they did not perform the service they promised (battery replacement) and instead BROKE MY PHONE. I also noted that the replacement phone (which did not look "new"--there was no box) had been supplied by Apple at no charge to them. The technician insisted that I pay $31.68 and refused to give me the replacement phone unless I agreed to pay that amount. I refused this extortion and left Computerland with my original and now broken phone. I called Apple Support and told them what happened--and the Apple Store in Berkeley ended up giving me a replacement phone FREE OF CHARGE. While the end result was satisfactory, it was Apple (not Computerland) who resolved the issue caused by Computerland's incompetence, and I lost several hours of time (and several days of waiting for a new appointment at Apple Store) in the process. It is unbelievable that Computerland wanted to charge me money for BREAKING MY PHONE. MacBook Air Repair: In the fall of 2017, I brought in my MacBook Air to be inspected/repaired for water damage. When I brought the computer into Computerland, it would work but only if it was plugged in. I previously had it inspected at the Apple Genius Bar, and was told that the magsafe board probably needed to be replaced but they suggested that I take it to Computerland to get the work done at a lower price. When I picked up my computer from Computerland, it was no longer working at all, even if plugged in, and was told the amount to fix it would exceed the value of the computer. So, once again, I left Computerland with a non-functioning device that was previously working (albeit only when plugged in) when I brought it in. Based on these two separate experiences, I will NEVER bring anything to Computerland for repair and will never recommend them to anyone. In addition to breaking my devices on two separate occasions, Computerland's employees were unprofessional in their interactions with me and outright rude in the instance involving my iPhone battery replacement. In both instances, they refused to accept responsibility for their actions and basically shrugged when they returned broken devices to me that had been working just a few hours earlier. I had a completely different (pleasant) experience in all of my interactions with Apple employees at the Apple Genius Bar. I have submitted a complaint to Apple directly as I believe they should review Computerland's status as an "authorized" support provider. I encourage anyone who has had similar experiences with Computerland to be sure to complete the surveys they receive from Apple asking about the quality of service (or lack thereof). read more

These guys are AMAZING. I spilled water on my work laptop (a MacBook Air), and then spilled wine on my personal laptop shortly after that (a MacBook Pro). Obviously, I have a problem. My MacBook Air would turn on, just couldn't detect WiFi because I fried the Airport Card. My MacBook Pro seemed to be all but toast -- it could barely boot. I brought both computers into Computerland on a Tuesday, and picked them both up on Friday in perfect working condition. They guys at Computerland were very communicative and walked me through how they were going to fix my Macs and (more importantly) how much each part of the service costs. I asked a lot of questions and they were incredibly professional and answered every single one to my satisfaction. The best part? I got two computers back in perfect condition, AND ONLY PAID $420. I would have paid $1200 more if I sent it to Apple. WHAT. These guys are seriously awesome. If you're an idiot like me and like spilling things on your laptop, make sure you check them out before paying an arm and leg at Apple. read more

My laptop came up one day with a "service battery" message. I took it in to Computerland because they were listed on the Apple website as being an authorized service provider, and they had really good reviews here on Yelp. They explained the problem to me (the battery needed to be replaced) in easy to understand non-technical terms, and gave me the price estimate of about $200 including parts and service. I also had the memory upgraded from 4gb to 8gb (price estimate $199). The man told me that it would take 1-2 business days for the battery to be ordered and shipped and for the parts to be swapped out, and that if he didn't have the memory in stock that would also be 1-2 business days to order. I came in during the middle of the day Thursday, and received the call on Friday right around their closing time that my computer was ready, and could be picked up the next day. Overall, service was friendly and professional. Plus, they cleaned off my really dirty screen and keyboard! Now my 4-year-old computer is running just as good as new! read more

My wife's external hard drive stopped working, and it had YEARS of photos, music, and records for our theatre company on it. From the point I walked in the door to drop it off, to when I was able to pick up the new drive with the old data on it, the team kept me informed, and were super kind patient. The price was EXTREMELY reasonable. I had an incredible experience. The only critique I have is that sometimes the person who called me left messages a little fast and quiet, so I never learned his name (yes, that's my only complaint). My Macbook Pro 13" died on me one night while I was streaming a show online. I was in the process of moving apartments and there was no one around in Berkeley to hang out with. Thus, I was stuck computerless and bored. I looked into Apple repair services but realized that my warranty had expired a while ago and the reviews often said Apple techs weren't very helpful. Luckily, I found Computerland on Yelp and decided to bring my laptop straight here since it was down the street from my work. I'm really glad I brought my laptop here because the service was great and I got my laptop back within a week! The man working explained to me that they would need to run a diagnostic test to find the problem, which would cost $40 with the was a chance it wouldn't be able to be fixed. If it was fixable, my $40 would go directly to the cost of repair instead of having to play a completely separate price. I decided to go through with the diagnostic test and I really valued Computerland's service. They asked if I had backed up my hard drive recently, but I hadn't done it in a while, and they said they would do their best to recover my files if it came down to it. After two days, I received a call that my laptop had a corrupted file that caused it to stop working, along with a ton of dust inside. That next day my laptop was fixed and ready for pick-up! The total cost was originally $160, but they gave me a $10 discount (not much but better than nothing!) and gave me the fatherly advice to back-up my computer so it doesn't break next time. This place scams students at UC Berkeley !! I am a Cal student and my laptop had wireless issues around midterm szn. I opted to take it here instead of the Apple Genius Bar just because they did same day pickup, well after a 'diagnostic' at Computer Land they proceeded to tell me the motherboard of my MacBook had to be replaced, which is $500+. I finally decided to make an appointment at apple and 24hrs later they had my laptop running perfectly and free of charge since it was a wireless issue. If you own a MacBook go to the apple store, the apple store employees also warned me of this place since they get a lot of customers coming in with stories like mine. read more

Unfortunately, my MacBook stopped charging and needed to find an authorized apple repair shop. I found Computerland through the Apple Genius Bar. I was able to get an appointment for same day. Arrived early, however was seen within a few minutes. Unfortunately, it wasn't something they could fix right then. I was told it would be a few days. Low and behold, less than 24 hours later, they called and said my laptop was ready. Woo Hoo! I'm so grateful. It was a simple fix. They were very friendly and helpful. Saturday afternoon, in the midst of a very hectic month, my hard drive failed. Died. Bit the big one. I'm an artist and terrible with stuff like, oh, backing up my work, so when the Apple tech support team sadly told me the last four years of my work was gone, I had a minor cardiac event. They suggested I take my computer to the Apple store in Corte Madera (kind of a hike) that night, where they could replace my drive in 5-7 days, or I could take it a whopping mile away to Computerland where they could replace my drive and work on recovering the data from the one that failed. I am so glad I waited. I dropped my computer off Monday morning, and now, a day later, I am happily typing to you from it. They installed a new hard drive AND, miraculously, recovered all of the work that I thought I'd never see again. I'm so happy, I didn't flinch when they presented me with a pretty reasonable bill for all that was done. I wanted to hug them, really. read more

Brought my MacBook Pro in to get the screen replaced (covered by Apple Warranty - Staingate again!). They were super fast, got it shipped back and forth to Apple in 2 days, and it's working and beautiful again! No charges whatsoever, no upselling of anything. Felt super easy to deal with and no waiting. Easier for me to get to then the Apple Store, which is often really busy. They are fully authorized Apple service providers...great job! read more

The battery on my MacBook wouldn't charge and I couldn't figure it out on my own. After a sleepless and computer-less night, I called Apple. Guess what? The Genius Bar was booked for days so they recommended that I go to Computerland instead since they're a certified Apple provider. Imagine that! I'm so glad I took their advice b/c I was back up and running within hours of walking in the door. You'd wait days at most other places, for just a diagnosis in most cases, but not there. Gus was phenomenal in dealing with me, especially since I was freaked out about not having access to my computer for even a few hours. He looked up my warranty, hooked my 'puter up to the diagnostic machine, then gave me a prognosis, all within the time it took for me to run a few errands. I ended up with a new adapter that day while he ordered the parts I needed to permanently fix the internal components. How awesome was that?! Update 3 days later: I just returned from seeing Gus at Computerland. My new battery had arrived plus the internal sensor part. I had a latte, fruit tart and some conversation at a nearby Italian cafe while he installed everything. I don't think 2 hours went by before I got the call to head back to the shop. My 'puter is back up to speed and I'm raring to get back to work. I can't say enough good things about Gus and his partner. They were calm in the face of my worries, explained everything to me, took care of my immediate problem, called me back in a timely manner and left me with some good advice on how to take better care of my battery. I was kind of reluctant to go through with a repair. I know computers and this laptop had water spilled on it. The motherboard was corroded and the tech was convinced he could fix it and interestingly enough he drove a hard bargain. We spoke on the phone, twice, and he kept trying to sell me on the repair. We finally came to an agreement: $60 if the repair failed and $220 if the repair worked (I wasn't going to commit to a repair that I was 80% certain wasn't going to work). It worked. I'm a fan. Caution: these guys are geeks and a little disorganized. My feedback to them was: be MORE UPFRONT with what they'll charge if you don't have your machine repaired. They wanted to charge me $80 if I didn't go through with the repair, but hadn't said that upfront - it wasn't malicious, just disorganization. It's what you get when you have a whole shop full of smart geeks who know how to fix computers :-) read more

The apple store told me my computer was no longer able to be turned on and I could send it to their recommended data recovery center with a 90% chance it might not turn back on, and a price tag of $700-$2900! I looked up other data retrieval, found computerland and within 48 hours had my computer up and running and repaired! Will definitely use them again if I ever had a computer issue again. As another reviewer had experienced, I too brought in my Mac for repair. I believe the same woman appeared ( only 1 woman there) and declared a diagnosis would take 3-4 days, but she could do it in 1 day if I pay an extra $50 "rush fee" ( ie, extortion) right then. I declined and elected to brave the crowds at Apple than to pay extra to get somebody to do the job that Apple would at least attempt on the spot. Evidently it's OK with them to extract extra money from Apple customers who come with the protection package, but it is definitely not OK with me. Shame on you Computerland! I have filed a complaint with Apple. Probably meaningless to the business, but if all the other 1 star reviewers ( who apparently get buried under "not recommended reviews" by Yelp) took an extra step to get the word out, maybe they would quit screwing customers and actually do the work. Unite! Edit: after getting my computer fixed in 2 minutes at the Apple store, I spoke with the Computerland manager, maybe owner. He was nice and very apologetic, yet felt the $50 rush charge is fine for walk in customers, even for quick and easy battery changes. I still reminded him I had made an appt and should not be subjected to extortion tactics. He agreed. I'm not changing my rating because nothing makes up for extortion. And for folks needing Apple repairs, especially under the protection plan, just bite the bullet and do a walk-in at an Apple store. It was painless, productive and FREE for an immediate repair. Just resist walking into this place if you're a student. Take Uber, which is alot less than the extra $50 to get these folks to provide reasonable customer service. read more

I chose to replace my Macbook Pro battery at Computerland of Berkeley due to their good reviews, but I had an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience after they damaged my laptop. I left my Macbook Pro in Computerland's care on a Wednesday morning for a standard battery change. Although they quoted me a high price ($300)--which I later learned was higher than the price at the local Apple store ($200)--I figured that given the good reviews, their good faith offer to replace my screen which had been recalled, and their promise to provide a quick turnaround (by the weekend) I would go with them. Unfortunately, I get a call from them at the end of the day on Friday informing me that not only was my repair incomplete, but that they had an issue with the camera which was now no longer working. Not to worry, I was told, I could purchase a $20 webcam on Amazon to address my Zoom needs during the pandemic. I tried calling later that day to ask for an explanation but the office was already closed for the weekend. I called them first thing Monday morning and was informed that because I had previously repaired my Macbook Pro fan, the prior repair shop had ostensibly reconnected the camera in a precarious way that the Computerland technician had broken during the repair. There was no way to repair the connection except to change the entire motherboard, which would cost hundreds of dollars. Again, I was told to purchase a $20 webcam from Amazon. Hold on a second, I said, you broke my Macbook Pro camera and you want me to pay for the webcam? Yes, I was told, because it was apparently the fault of my prior computer repair shop. The fact that I had provided them with a laptop with a functional camera and was now receiving that laptop without one didn't seem to concern Computerland. They offered no apology for the mistake and ultimately agreed to provide me a $20 refund as "a courtesy", although I explained that it would cost me ~$50 to get a half-decent webcam. I acquiesced and returned to the shop, picked up the laptop, turned it on to ensure it booted properly, checked the battery, got my refund, and drove an hour away to my home. Only upon returning home and beginning to work on my repaired laptop did I realize that my function keys (f1-f12) were no longer working properly. I had been informed that my keyboard was replaced as part of the battery replacement, but I had now realized that they had failed to check that it was fully functional. I called them and after spending about 45 mins on the phone attempting (and failing) to remotely service it, I was back on the road driving an hour to Computerland of Berkeley for another service. Although I requested a full refund of the repair to cover my time and cost of gas after they damaged both my camera and keyboard, I was informed this was not possible. Upon arriving, I was jostled around for another hour until a technician realized the issue was a simple fix in my keyboard settings that was not completed during the repair. I was given another $45 courtesy refund, which barely covered my gas and certainly not my time. Overall, my experience at Computerland of Berkeley was extremely disappointing. When I placed my laptop in their care, I expected them to treat it with the same professionalism and respect that they treat their own machines. Instead, they permanently damaged my camera without my consent, refused to take responsibility or apologize, and failed to ensure my keyboard was properly functioning which caused me to waste half of my day getting it back up to speed. I recommend going elsewhere to service your laptops. read more

I went in for the iPhone 5 recall. They were very nice and friendly, and it was very simple to turn my phone in and get a loaner phone. The loaner phone was like new, it worked very well. There were no inconveniences. Only thing was that it took over a week for me to get my phone back, but there wasn't that much of an inconvenience because of the loaner phone. I've been trying to keep my older macbook alive until I finish my thesis (fingers crossed, by the end of the year). While my computer has treated me well overall, it is showing its age. There has been a crack in the keyboard casing for years. The fix was covered under my Apple plan, but I never got it repaired because it would require sending my computer in for at least three days (!). Also, the cable on my power adapter just started fraying and there were some wires exposed. There's a recall on the power adapters which I was eligible for and Computerland was listed as one of the retailers authorized to handle the exchange. I stopped in to the store and got a warm reception right away (this is not that common for Berkeley businesses, in my experience). The gentleman behind the counter said he wasn't sure if I qualified for the recall and he'd have to take my information and check on it. He took a look at my computer and said, 'Regardless, I can replace this keyboard case for you, free of charge.' Nice! A few days later he called back and said I could come to the store to pick up the adapter and get my case replaced. When I stopped in, he said he could finish the replacement in two hours. Naively, I thought it would take less time and mentioned this, and without skipping a beat he said, 'It'll be done in an hour.' Came back after lunch and sure enough, it was like getting a brand new computer, free of charge. They didn't bill me a dime for any of their effort (checking on the recall, ordering the new parts and doing the casing replacement)! Plus they were really friendly and they were efficient at handling the times when there were many customers in the store at once. Thankyou Computerland! read more

They suggested Computerland and I'm so glad they did because the service here was really great. I had appointment later but told them I had to come in earlier. My Macbook pro has had problems for a long time: Sudden and random restarting, scrambled video, booting issues, etc. The apple "geniuses" told me the problem was the RAM, but clearly, it wasn't. In the end, I took it to computerland, and 2 days after, it was fixed. They managed to get a new motherboard from apple for me so that it costed me $80 to get my macbook working fine again..
