Before I even get into the amazing food, it's important for me to first give major props to the staff for creating such a communal atmosphere and they made sure to take care of us as if we were the only customers in the restaurant (it was a packed Friday night and the other half of the restaurant was closed off for a holiday party). We wanted to be moved away from the door and the super sweet gentleman at the host desk not only moved us within 10 minutes but even offered to give us a booth! Now the food..... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. We started off with the Brussel Sprouts and the $20 Mozz Stick. The mozzarella stick is definitely a one-time and you're good but the brussel sprouts were so amazing I still want to go back just to eat them again. For our entrees I had the lo mein cacio e pepe and my friend had the burger. I tried some of her burger and it melts in your mouth - a MUST order. The lo mein was great just had a bit too many whole peppercorns for my liking. I'll definitely be back again and will do a repeat of the brussel sprouts and the burger. read more

It was packed on a Friday night but a nice wait staff saw that we were waiting and got us a table. We had the trader vic's mai tai and the south side which were both fantastic. I was about to give them 3 stars but my eife convienced me to raise it to 4... The place has a very neat old world decor. (Its all original / restored from 1906). They are no equipped for large parties but they did managed to creat a spot from a few tables for a group of 7 of us. The scotch selection is standard nothing special Classic american bar selection... simillar to a sports bar. There was a live band music (jazz playing) in my opinion too loudly you couldnt talk to much had to yell lol. But if you adore jazz it a good hang out. I checked the yelp photos of the food before we came and i got a bit disappointed when i wanted to order since many of the dishes i was planing to order was no longer in the menu apperetly its was changed and downsized... The black cavier dish they had was good but a bit to much cream and not enough caviar. I will give them a firm congratulations on making one of the best burgers i had in a bar ever. I'm a fan. I got a beer, burger, and fries. The fries were well seasoned and had a good crisp. The burger was delicious - one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. The meat was marinated in some type of sauce, which separated it from a lot of burgers that just pile things on top of the burger for taste. Service was friendly and attentive. read more

The Chicken Roulade was delicious! The broccoli Romanesco and capers balanced the dish perfectly. The Broccoli was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. I kept going in for more Romanesco. Maybe it's my own fault for not knowing how Comstock Saloon "works," but we came in on a Friday night for pre-dinner drinks. We were originally planning to sit at the bar, but all the stools were taken, so we sort of stood around awkwardly waiting to see if a table would open up, as did six others who were in the bar area with us. We didn't see waitstaff for nearly ten whole minutes--and actually I wasn't sure at first that there were any. Eventually two tables in the back opened up. Four of the girls took one table, and my husband and I took the other. About two minutes after this a server finally came out and without even making eye contact said, "uh, we have a waiting list for these tables." And then walked away. No, "would you like to get ON the list?" or letting us know where we should go/should have gone to get actual service, a polite attitude, nothing. On our way back out, we noticed the last two people who had been waiting with us had just ordered at the bar and were now just standing around near the doorway with their drinks. So, I might come back because I've heard the cocktails are excellent, but that was a pretty awful first impression. Here's the deal: you gotta love Comstock with a Sister Wives kinda love. There are plenty of other lovers who want a piece of this handsome establishment, and that's just the way it is. You'll never have it all to yourself. While there aren't many spots that draw me to North Beach, Comstock Saloon is one of the few. I can't resist it's charms. The atmosphere is so unique, cozy and historic (authentically? I'm not sure) that it's difficult not to pick up some old-timey feel-good vibes when you're here. It's popular - like waaaay - and far too small to accommodate the masses that would like to spend all night in their saloon style booths. But when it's all said and done you'll be happy you came, saw, sipped, tapped your toes, and relished in Comstock's lively golden glow. Cocktails are fab. Seating is scarce. Popped in here last night and for some reason, didn't think I would like it nearly as much as I did. Unusual since I usually don't feel that way when I hit a new place. Happy to say that my experience here was way better than I ever expected. The bartender, Jeff, was a real character. At first, I thought he was a little over the top, but after a while, I realized he was pretty cool and highly entertaining. He makes some fantastic drinks too. Exactly what a bar like this needs. Had a Southside ($8) made of Gin, Lemon, Sugar, Mint, and Seltzer as well as a Martinez ($12) made of Old Tom Gin, Sweet Vermouth, maraschino liquer and bitters. For some reason, perhaps because of the ingredients, I thought I would really like the Martinez and that the Southside would be just okay. As it turned out, reality was the exact opposite and the Southside was the real star of the two for me. The reason for this was that despite the list of simple ingredients, the bartender used just the right amount of each to turn it into something really special. A touch more or a touch less of any of the ingredients and the balance would have been off. This was one made perfectly...mine was so good!!! I really liked what they did with the decor of the former SF Brewing Company and the band playing overhead brought back memories of some clubs I've been to in LA. As I sat at the bar enjoying cocktails and good conversation with the fun couple next to me (Hello to Manuel and Alicia!), who should walk in the door, but Francis Ford Coppola himself. Yes, that's right...Francis Ford Coppola! Drinking a well-made, old world cocktail in those surroundings with Coppola just a few feet away really made the place for me. The crowning end to a day that started awfully with a broken car and then slowly got better and better. Was originally going to give it a four, but because of the above, decided the Comstock deserves a five as it far exceeded my original expectations. read more

Serendipity struck a few months ago in the form of Comstock. I had just finished my binge marathon of Deadwood when I read about a new throwback bar on the Barbary Coast. I was ready to party like it was 1847, and I did not have to travel to frontier country to do so. Unfortunately there weren't any Calamity Jane types here, but the vibe was mellow and I loved that there is a piano player nestled in a small nook upstairs, and I think he bore a slight resemblance to Wild Bill Hickcock. The restored bar is stunning; actually the interior is impeccable, and much more inviting than the ruffian Gem Saloon. The cocktails, while artisan crafted and beautiful, offer the potency that you need after a long day of gunslinging and bounty hunting. The sazerac was probably the best I've had outside the Big Easy, and wow, the handlebar mustachioed bartender did not skimp on the hooch. A novelty for me was the Hop Toad, a combination of Jamaican rum, apricot brandy, lime, and bitters that is reputed to be a San Francisco original from the turn of the century. I probably should have tried some of the food, as I needed it and it made me salivate, especially the bone marrow. I'll don my Calamity Jane sass and come back for more! read more

Comstock Saloon has long been on my list of places to visit, either for the adult beverages, the food, or both. On this cold, wintry night, my friends and I popped in after dinner for a libation or two, or three. The place wasn't too crowded and we were lucky to nab one of the booths. It afforded us a full view of the band playing upstairs and allowed us to see and be seen in the bar area. The cocktail menu is limited but for $13 they will make you pretty much any cocktail of your choice. Even if you are ordering something from the past, the bartender will provide a very well made version of it. No cheap mixers to be found here! They beverage menu includes a small list of interesting cocktails and a few standard ones. We loved the ambiance, which had an eclectic, old fashioned San Francisco vibe. The place was pretty relaxed and folks seemed to all want to have a great time. The host (?) was fantastic! Parking is not an issue as there are plenty of garages and street parking nearby. I cannot wait to return to try the food. read more

Solid cocktail bar. Probably my new favorite in San Francisco, in fact. On a crazy busy Friday night my friends and I were greeted warmly by a server. It was so packed she could barely reach out booth through the crowd and managed to make her job look effortless and easy and she waded through the room, took (separate) orders from our large 10 person group, and smiled and laughed at our drunken jokes. Great selection of spirits at the bar, the food (Scotch eggs!) was awesome, and the cocktail menu was enticing. Who needs a magical wardrobe a la CS Lewis or a special time-traveling buggy a la Woody Allen to be transported to a different era when you have this amazing spot? As soon as you step in the door you're surrounded by all sorts of old-timey goodness, from an amazing live band playing on the balcony to the carefully crafted cocktails, this feels like a throwback to the roarin' 20s... or at least how I imagine that time to be. I requested that the friendly bartendress create me a drink using St. Germain and she ended up handing me a very strong and tasty mix of tequila and celery bitters, which I didn't think I liked at first but ended up gulping down with gusto once I got used to the strength and unique flavor. She was totally cool about splitting our tabs, too, which I always appreciate. My one complaint is that it wasn't a very convenient spot for a group to just stop in and hang... the bar area is very narrow and the seats were reserved for those ordering food. We would have stayed longer but we literally couldn't move around in the tiny space available to us! Sigh ....... I always feel it necessary to give credit where it is due. But the converse of that is that some places just drop the ball, and its my solemn duty to expose these incompetents wherever they are hiding, waiting to take your money you leave offended, inconvenienced, unsatisfied and angry. That is what happened at Comstock. If you want to be treated rudely, sit in a room with gloomy lighting, uncomfortable wooden benches, and wait 25 minutes for your cocktail which is average tasting, and small, then by all means; Go To Comstock. Because that is what you will get. Our female server (attn: Comstock Owner/Mgmt: We were there on Friday night, about 10pm, served by an under 30 white chik with straight blonde hair pulled back in a pony tail) was SO rude, short with us, flippant and inconvenienced by our burdening patronage, that we almost felt guilty trying to be their customer. And at the end of our 1 cocktail, we had to wait another 45 minutes to get a bill, which she refused to bring us even after literally following her around ON FOOT asking for it in person. She was actually having a tantrum and refusing to get us a tab because, she must have known, there would NOT be a tip in it for her. So we eventually said this to the bartender: "Sir, we are REALLY trying not to walk out on our bill. And we have been asking for a check for 45 minutes. Your server is not getting it to us and refuses to even speak to us now. Can you please give us the bill for our 3 drinks so we can just leave?" He did. We paid. No tip. Adios. Won't be back. I highly suggest you go to any of the countless other bars within 100 yards of this place before going there. Even if she had been awesome, the whole place is just depressing and dark, has no character. Yes Yes And more yes. As soon as my buddy Nish N told me we'd be stopping by here and mentioned it is from the same mind who brought my liver Absinthe, well, duh, I was as good as there! And so, with only one night to spend in my favorite city, we opted to head over here and partake in a little (okay a lot) of food and libation. From the cocktails to the nibblies, it was an absolute win win for my palate and judging by the elevated noise levels of our party, the feelings were mutual. Service was also super friendly and you can't really hate on a place that has bartenders with super duper curled up mustaches and vintage wear. Two of the servers I encountered during my experience here are the rudest human beings to grace the streets of San Francisco. The drinks were great, and I loved the ambiance, but I felt really really badly mistreated here. Came here on a Friday night and luckily found a table for our party. The first thing our waiter said to us was "You guys gonna get a drink or what? Maybe put down your phone so you can read the menu and figure what to order." Holy crap why the attitude man? The three of us were pretty taken aback that he was soooo rude without a single word out of our mouths. Yeah we didn't know exactly what we wanted the exact second he came but he didn't wait for us to even open the menu while he stood there! He just made that snarky ass comment and shimmied off with his nose almost touching the ceiling. Btw he had slicked back grey hair and glasses, and was about middle aged (just so you know to avoid this dude). So we picked drinks right away, and waited for him to come back to take our order but 5 minutes go by, 10 minutes go by, and we get sick of waiting so I decide to grab drinks from the bar instead. The bartender was great, no complaints here. Then the same waiter dude found us waiting at the bar after already buying our drinks, and all of the sudden became much more polite and said we should order from him instead, and that drinks at the bar take too long to get. (Even though it literally took me 30 seconds just making eye contact with the bartender). The other server we had at our table, a waitress with short-ish blonde hair, did the same thing as the other waiter after our large party arrived. She asked if we'd like more drinks (sans any emotion on her face) and then waited about 15 seconds while the new arrivals scanned the menu and then strutted off without a word. Wtf dude no one here can give guests at least a minute to make drink decisions? Just the way she went about it came off really sh*tty and made us all feel like the wait staff didn't want us here at all. She came back again in about 10 minutes and did THE SAME THING. She never took a single drink order, she came twice asking, and both times didn't wait more than 15 seconds before she left rolling her eyes. We weren't even being rowdy either, we were just chatting and trying to have a good time, but the servers totally ruined our time here due to their butthole attitudes. It was only after we ordered about 10 drinks did the original waiter with the grey hair and glasses start to act like he was a nice human. (I'm 110% sure he just wanted our tips which is why he didn't want us going to the bar....) Thanks for the drinks Comstock, but some of your waitstaff seriously need their attitudes checked, I would never come back to drop that much money and be treated like that, that's never ok in my book. read more

The moment you walk into this spot you're transported into another time. You half expect a wells fargo stage coach to pass the windows of this bar up. When you look and see a bus pass by then you're reminded that you're not in the 1800's San Francisco anymore and perhaps you should stop calling that Asian fella a Chinaman. Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. The bartenders have a specific uniform here that really goes on to sell the theme and the era just right. You look up and see those old fashion fans working on a small motor and you just get pulled into it further. And if you haven't been convinced that you traveled in time, the menu and the drinks they serve, especially how they hand craft those mixed drinks will just push you through that immersion wall and contemplate finding a settlement to go gold mining after this next drink. They do have a happy hour that I highly recommend hitting up. Prices are fairly cheap and for S.F., it's a pretty decent bargain. You're also treated to some really social conversation from your bartender as the joint isn't completely filled. It helps that they'll mix you a fairly potent drink to get your late afternoon going just right. read more

I always appreciate a bar that can make a delicious old fashion; if you enjoy this particular cocktail as much as I do you understand that this is actually hard to come by. Rye and Mr. Lews are particularly good at making them as well...I digress. Great, vibrant scene after work, brimming to the edges with a variety of folks. It seems to always be busy so if you're looking to sit down and have a more relaxing time, you can make reservations on Open Table like we did. We were ushered back to a little booth right in the middle of their bustling bar. Easy-peasy! The food was good, although not entirely 4-star worthy. The pretzel and pig in a biscuit was delightful but I probably could have done without the corn fritters. They were a little on the dry side. See you again soon, Comstock. While walking to breakfast at Mama's we noticed the groovy Comstock Saloon. I instructed CP not to look at the menu because we already had dinner plans. But, I messed up, I looked at the menu.... and it sounded oh so good. And, since it was so close to our hotel, I was immediately sucked in. Thank goodness because this place was totally worth it! We stopped in around six for the happy hour derby cocktail. It was very yummy and only $6. Plus, on an empty stomach, it was super strong. The bartender was very funny. We decided to be safe over sorry and made reservations for a few hours later. Then we left. Once we were reseated (not at the bar but in the back room where it is quieter) for dinner we really started digging into the menu. Everything sounded awesome but we eventually settled on the corn fritters for an appetizer and the salmon for dinner. Plus another round of drinks! Our waitress was very pleasant and efficient. She brought everything to us in a timely manner. Even though I super burned my tongue on the corn fritters they were totally worth it. So yummy. The salmon was perfectly prepared. Not over cooked at all and wholly sumptuous. We rounded out our meal with the absolutely amazing bourbon pudding. It has a little banana cake in the bottom and a strong bourbon taste. I was in heaven. I want to dive head first into a pool of this pudding. It was perfect. Even though I had not expected to have dinner here I was so glad we did. The music, the staff, the great food and drinks... everything was even better then I could have hoped for. We stumbled upon the best place around! read more

Comstock has some great old-school spirit-based cocktails. I had my first Blood and Sand here, and it has since become one of my favorite old-school cocktails, since it's one of the few made from Scotch. They also make a damn fine sazerac and vesper (stirred, not shaken). I can't get enough of the revival of the original cocktail craft and the new mixology. They also have some great food to go with your drink. Most notably, some delicious housemade pickles, and a bone marrow pot pie. BONE MARROW POT PIE. One may have heard of sucking the marrow of life from Walt Whitman... but Comstock has extracted the marrow for you and baked it into a rich and hearty pot pie. Wow, stepping into this bar was such a surprise. First, I hadn't been IN a bar in only God knows how long, so it was kinda cool to step into Comstock and feel like I'd time traveled back to the 1800's. The decor is VERY old and the bar itself is massive. I don't think photos can do it justice. At the bar, under the bar stools, if you notice there is a tile trough. It is what men used to use to piss in while still sitting at the bar. Disgusting concept if you think about that being used today, but don't worry, it's clean and it's pretty rad they preserved that and left it there. We went in for lunch, and I tried the pigs n blanket. They are like mini crispy pork sliders. I thought they were delicious. I know Comstock is known, and renowned, for their cocktails, but I don't drink hard liquor so I just stuck with a local Anchor Steam. It was delicious and I really enjoyed it. This place is a step back in time if I've ever seen one. Instantly after walking in the door I felt like I was on the holodeck of the Starship Enterprise. Why? Because they pay attention to the details. From the 1920's-ish interior decor to the signature cocktails to the quirky ceiling fans, everything is a perfect expression of the mood they want you to feel. Take a seat on a couch in the back and you'll wish you had an opium pipe and an absinthe in your hand. I've only been here once but it was awfully crowded. I think a recent recommendation by Anthony Bourdain put this place on the map for a lot of folks. Once you visit you'll see why people keep coming back. read more

I came here for a date, and once you get inside, it's like a whole different world that has a NY pub feel with a bit of class. They have good cocktails and some good small bites. We ordered the hangtown toast (SO bomb!) and the pigs in a biscuit (also bom!). We took a while to order, but the staff were very attentive to make sure we had what we wanted. Comstock is like a beautiful blend of Bourbon and Branch and 15 Romolo. Upon telling our bartender JB this his reply was, "and we won't ask you for a password." As soon as my friends Nicole L. and Chris J. walked in we were greeted by a fantastic host who said it would be a couple minutes if we wanted a booth and showed us a menu. The menu is a soft leather bound creation (and yes the bar does smell of rich mahogany). After perusing the menu I went to the bar and said to myself, this is the kind of place I can get a real old-fashioned. Brandy Old-Fashioned sweet.. with orange. The owners brew their own brandy, which makes your mouth extremely happy. I'm going out on a limb to say it was the best old-fashioned I have ever had... and I'm from Wisconsin. (Did I mention it's also only 8 bucks?!) We were seated quickly and our server JB did a great job. All 3 of us were huddled around one menu and literally within 30 seconds he appeared to place another in front of us. Nicole went with the appetizer, the cheese crackers (which are like crack covered cheese-its with pepper jelly mmmmm). Chris went big and got the beef and bone marrow pot pie. Talk about comfort food, the crust was buttery and flaky and I really understood why my mom always called it "mud meat" when she put beef in the crock pot. Per usual I ordered dessert, I went with the Bourbon pudding with shortcake. WOW... seriously WOW, that is all I can say. To sum up the food I will again quote our fantastic server, "I would eat pot pie and bourbon pudding for every single meal if I only needed to live to 27." It was fairly busy but all the waitstaff and employees were attentive to everyone's needs. Best hospitality I have experienced in a long time. I am in love with this place! Came here while barhopping on New Years Eve and I was amazed. It's kind of a speak easy type of place where they have old school fans rotating on the ceilings. They had a live jazz band playing and even a flapper type of girl dancing and singing. There was also this very beautiful woman playing the piano. I like that this place allows you to bring in a large party and be loud. Some speak easy bars don't allow large parties or loud noise because they want the ambiance to be true to the time, which is understandable. For a Saturday evening, this place had quite a few people. We walked in on one side, but there weren't enough the seats there. There was 2 sides to the bar, and the other side had a few more seats. I ended up getting the pisco punch which was actually pretty good. I will admit this was the first drink of many that night, but the atmosphere at this bar was almost there. I kind of wanted it to be a little more saloon like, but it was great nonetheless. Overall, good strong drinks and great time with the boyfriend. I really like coming to this spot just to enjoy the decor and atmosphere. It's dimely lit and there's usually a live band playing. It's a great place for drinks and food and not too crowded since I've been visiting. There are two entrances and we usually like to go to the one a little further down and sit right next to the entrance. I've ordered the food a few times but what keeps me going back are the drinks. I usually get the Cherry Bounce because anything cherries is awesome. Definitely recommend hitting up this place if you're in the city. read more

And I do mean an honest-to-goodness meal. This is not some sad deli sandwich thrown together carelessly. It is chef's whim, however, so there's only one option per week. On this particular Friday, my girlfriend and I were delighted to try the "bunny in a bun" which is a cute name for what turned out to be a rabbit salad, lightly dressed with currants and served on a toasted brioche bun, with a frisee salad on the side. If you've never had rabbit, just know that it doesn't really taste like chicken (our waiter described it as being more similar to dark meat turkey, which makes sense to me). And most importantly, this was a really excellent sandwich. If they offered this on the regular lunch menu, I'd totally order it again! I also thoroughly enjoyed the special house cocktails ... I started with cherry bounce (the brandy soaked cherries are a delightful garnish) and followed up with the shotgun wedding (very minty & refreshing). Service was impeccable and our waiter made excellent recommendations as well. All in all, Comstock Saloon offers a great deal when you consider the quality of the meal and drinks, but it's not an everyday lunch spot either unless you're taking advantage of a company expense account...or indulge part in 2-cocktail lunches on the regular ;) But absolutely worth the splurge for a special lunch to wind down the week! read more

Maybe my biggest mistake was the XL expectations I came here with. This place caught my eye when walking by and ever since I have been reading yelp reviews and giddily awaiting a chance to go. So a few weeks ago when I met a friend here at 6:30 on a Thursday, I was a bit surprised to find the place pretty empty and quiet. Where was my mustacheoed bartender? Where was the crowd hovering over busy tables? After enjoying one cocktail (which was tasty and nicely presented) we mozied off in search of a more lively scene. I will give this place another try maybe on a weekend night and hope for better results. read more
