I am in love with this place! Came here while barhopping on New Years Eve and I was amazed. It's kind of a speak easy type of place where they have old school fans rotating on the ceilings. They had a live jazz band playing and even a flapper type of girl dancing and singing. There was also this very beautiful woman playing the piano. I like that this place allows you to bring in a large party and be loud. Some speak easy bars don't allow large parties or loud noise because they want the ambiance to be true to the time, which is understandable. Whoever coined the phrase, "There's no such thing as a free lunch," has clearly never been to Comstock Saloon! Every Friday, they offer a delicious meal on the house with the purchase of two drinks. And I do mean an honest-to-goodness meal. This is not some sad deli sandwich thrown together carelessly. It is chef's whim, however, so there's only one option per week. On this particular Friday, my girlfriend and I were delighted to try the "bunny in a bun" which is a cute name for what turned out to be a rabbit salad, lightly dressed with currants and served on a toasted brioche bun, with a frisee salad on the side. If you've never had rabbit, just know that it doesn't really taste like chicken (our waiter described it as being more similar to dark meat turkey, which makes sense to me). And most importantly, this was a really excellent sandwich. If they offered this on the regular lunch menu, I'd totally order it again! I also thoroughly enjoyed the special house cocktails ... I started with cherry bounce (the brandy soaked cherries are a delightful garnish) and followed up with the shotgun wedding (very minty & refreshing). Service was impeccable and our waiter made excellent recommendations as well. All in all, Comstock Saloon offers a great deal when you consider the quality of the meal and drinks, but it's not an everyday lunch spot either unless you're taking advantage of a company expense account...or indulge part in 2-cocktail lunches on the regular ;) But absolutely worth the splurge for a special lunch to wind down the week! read more

Maybe my biggest mistake was the XL expectations I came here with. This place caught my eye when walking by and ever since I have been reading yelp reviews and giddily awaiting a chance to go. So a few weeks ago when I met a friend here at 6:30 on a Thursday, I was a bit surprised to find the place pretty empty and quiet. Where was my mustacheoed bartender? Where was the crowd hovering over busy tables? After enjoying one cocktail (which was tasty and nicely presented) we mozied off in search of a more lively scene. Since there's been such good reviews we were expecting an overall great experience. The food is delicious, the drinks are presented well, but average for cocktails in the city. This review is for the service. Sarah L was our server, and unfortunately was probably having a very bad day. She kept taking the menus away from us (because they have a shortage), but we couldn't look at the drinks or discuss what was worth getting because she literally kept taking the menus away every chance she got. I asked three times (three!) and she said only when we were ready to order we could have them. A solution might be for every table give one menu, instead of taking three away every time? We decided to just take photos of the menus but it still took ten minutes to even get the menu so we could take a photo. She completely forgot about an appetizer, never brought it up, gave us the check without us asking if we were finished, and also took the food menus away from us while we were eating our appetizers (before we had ordered our main courses). We were here for a birthday dinner and honestly the hostility was just so much it really impacted us. The food was all good but our service really affected us. Perhaps we'll go again if we're in the area but we definitely won't go back for dinner. read more

Dressed up a bit from the SF Brewing Company days, and with an awesome gourmet menu. We had delicious chicken fried rabbit if you can imagine that, as well as housemade pickles. I was really in the mood for wine even though I knew I was going to a saloon, and they suprised me with a well-chosen wine list. Friends enjoyed their fancy cocktails as well. Service was also 4 stars--I think the only thing we waited any length of time for was the check. It was definitely loud (difficult for our table of five to hear each other across a small table) due to a large party next to us, but the waiter said he was trying to usher them out as quickly as possible and apologized to us at the end. I've noticed that the establishments in North Beach, perhaps more so than any other neighborhood in the City, do an excellent job of honoring their history as they evolve. Two words will define your experience at Comstock Saloon: "headbutt" and "whimsey". The headbutt is a happy-hour special which comes with a shot and a short beer. The shot is filled to the brim, and you drink your first sip standing up, with your hands behind your back, bending over at the waist. For $6. An excellent way to start things off. Aside from that, all you need to do is practice saying "barkeep's whimsey" so much that you can still utter it even though you can't stand up. Put your faith in the highly talented bar staff, and they will keep you supplied with interesting, tasty, and conversation worthy cocktails until you can consume no more. And there's a dinner menu. The 19th century decor made me feel like I could have worn my saloon-girl or Edwardian costume and be part of the vintage theme. It made me wonder how people were like during the days of Barbary Coast. I absolutely loved the old-fashion ambiance. They have a pretty impressive cocktail list. I can't remember which one my date ordered... I think he got something-mule, but I continued to drink my usual... red wine. Housed in a venue that has been serving adult beverages since 1907, Comstock is an excellent addition to the San Francisco scene. We sipped our vintage cocktails (mine being the off the menu dark 'n' stormy) and enjoyed the live jazz soundtrack, all while indulging in eclectic bites such as pigs in a biscuit and grilled trout with alligator pear relish (now known as avocado). It looked, sounded and tasted splendid. The old school style. The stylish ambiance. The timeless cuisine. Comstock Saloon brilliantly does it all. And one more thing they brought back: my grandfather's pocketwatch. Still one of the best gifts I've ever received, there could not have been a more appropriate place to wear it. Came on a Saturday night just past 9pm with my mom and her friend. We needed to eat food but after eating some bread and cheese during the Laker game, we didn't need a full meal. I figured I'd take them to Comstock since we were nearby and I had heard good things. I got a Southside Cocktail, which was light and refreshing (but with a good pour of gin). We also ordered the fried oyster cocktail, the crock of beans, and the beef shank and bone marrow pot pie. The oyster cocktail was delicious with perfectly fried oysters, though at times they were hard to get out of the cocktail cup (they kept sinking into the cocktail sauce). The beans came with a biscuit (tasty but a bit chewy in a non-biscuit-y way on the outside) and included salt pork. It's a subtle dish and similar to something I make in the slow cooker at home. The pot pie was delicious, though small. The side of salad is a perfect accompaniment as the pot pie itself is rich. at $18 it seems pricey for the portion but bone marrow isn't easy to come by. I definitely recommend this place for a date (in the dining room where it's pretty quiet) and with friends in the bar room. I would love to go again and see if I can get a booth in the bar area. read more

Oh Comstock Saloon, I love you, but last night was a disappointment. When some friends recently asked for my opinion on Sazeracs in the city I immediately suggested they hit up the Comstock Saloon for some proper preparation. In fact, I tout their Sazerac solutions on the regular, even more so now that I've recently deemed Rye's mixture a bit too sweet to the tooth for my taste. However, I know now that a good thing taken with a little extra sugar trumps primped perfection served with the veiled vinegar of prejudice any day. I am a semi-regular at this vintage piss-trough of a bar (the vintage piss-trough being a good thing) and I even know a few of the staff by name though I'm sure they'd be hard put to remember mine if they can't even recall the names of the music-makers that nightly imbibe the joint with a jaunty, jazz-age vibe. No matter; faces and names are not the beef at stake here. My quarrel stems from personnel who find it necessary to remind patrons to tip the waitstaff for their toils. Really? No, freaking duh. But it IS tacky to address this issue, no? I do hate to bring it up but here it comes; you started it. We left a $12 tip for a $54 not because you or anyone else reminded us to do so but because that's what you do. Sure, Americans may find their culture lacking in certain aspects, especially when compared to the rich dynasties and sophisticated histories of nations abroad, but dammit do we ever have our culture of tipping and proper cocktail crafting on lock-down. If my party of Sazerac-curious friends I brought in last night were assumed by staff to have "discovered" the place in an as seen on TV feature then we couldn't help but conversely assume that the staff appraised our less than FiDi-after-five attire (dress-code?) to be appropriate for streetside seating, not to mention, again, that tacky little reminder concerning service compensation. Blech. The overall unspoken vibe at Comstock last night rang derisive, and I'm embittered by the voiced affront that suggested our party as part of wave of second-class flotsam washed ashore via Fisherman's Wharf. Hardly. Swallowing this bitter pill won't be easy now that I have even less local friends and co-workers to share my Comstock esteem with. read more

It's late, your car is back near AT&T Stadium, you're in the middle of Chinatown, and you could really use a drink. And if you happen to be near the Comstock Saloon, then respite is right around the corner, right Zach? This is a fantastic bar to wash away the exploits of the day and cleanse the palette with fantastic mixology. One does not simply live forever without having a few cocktails here. I can't speak for the food as I didn't have the chance to try any, but that's only because the drinks floored me (as they did you Zach). There are plenty of drinks to choose from, but indecision is where it's at. I highly recommend the Bartender's Whimzy - a roll of the alcoholic dice, wouldn't you agree Zach? The bartender mixes up whetever they feel like for you, and no experiment has resulted in failure. Quite the opposite. The talent is put where your tongue is, and each round is money well spent. Very underwhelmed. The lounge atmosphere is great, but we ate in restaurant part and it was nice, but not nearly as cute or cozy. The staff was also excellent. But I go to restaurants to eat, and the food was unimpressive. Wine - we ordered a bottle of Chardonnay. It was so acidic we had to send it back. I realize it was the cheapest bottle on the menu, but it was still $28 and there were only a few wines on the menu and this one should have been chosen with more care. Pigs in a Blanket - by far the standout dish. This is worth ordering again. The pork was delicious and it came inside these lovely biscuits with homemade pickles, coleslaw and mustard on the side. The whole dish worked beautifully. I would recommend going to Comstock for this and cocktails. Salad with creamy dressing - this was literally lettuce covered with the most flavorless dressing ever. There was no flavor. Rabbit fried chicken - It was a good dish. I was fairly full by the time they served it but the rabbit roulade and the fried rabbit nuggets with celery salad were quite good. Sausage and white beans - I was unimpressed. I didn't think the flavors worked well together. And personally, I do not like very buttery dishes and this was served with a greasy piece of toast. Overall, I would recommend going to the lounge for drinks and the pigs in a blanket, but on the whole I thought the food was too pricey for the quality. read more

I fell in love with Comstock Saloon the first 10 seconds when I walked into this old- western themed saloon on a Wednesday evening. There was a live band playing light jazz on the balcony high above. The music and the low-lit ambiance beautifully set the tone of the saloon: class, sophistication, lots of character, and fun. Best of all, it is a place that really knows their cocktails. Classics like the Szerac and Sidecar are made to perfection. Mmmmm to the Blood and Sand. Again, these bartenders really know what they are doing. I love food and drink, and I also know that San Francisco is a big city with many places in which to indulge. So it was more than a little amazing to find out that almost everyone I know who's been to SF recently knew of this spot, and had been there. And it was even more amazing that I was privileged to go there with a lovely friend I hadn't seen in years, on the night of the Lunar New Year Parade. Such magic everywhere.... Amidst the sparkle and pop of amateur firecrackers outside the front door, I basked in the glow of my South Side - beautiful. Fans lazily loomed far above, the band played in the balcony up on the wall, and the Scotch egg made everything right - so right - with the world. They also serve a fun version of that steakhouse staple of whipped cheese in a stoneware jar, except theirs is from Cabot and studded with bright red pimento dices and ever so sophisticated in comparison. It felt like a little neighborhood family from all over had convened in this one spot, and the feeling was like coming home except to something a little new. And amazing. If you find yourself up amongst the red sauce, lights, and incline of North Beach, do yourself a favor and pop in. Stay a while, laugh, and walk out the door hours later a little freer knowing that even if everyone doesn't know your name, everyone knows the name of where you've been. In a good way.... read more

Such a wonderful find north of SF Chinatown, amid such a plethora of solid bar choices for those fancy nights out on the town! Comstock has that 1920s flair, with a live jazz band playing on the 2nd floor balcony, and a large bar filled with all sorts of liquors and drinks. The layout of the place is a bit odd, as it's split in half: on one side it's a lively bar section, and the other is more of a "quieter" restaurant section. Granted, you can order food on the bar side, but it can get really crowded during the evening with everyone wanting their drinks before delighting in conversation and fesetivities! I came here with a couple of friends, and we were lucky to find an open table that seated all of us. They have a pretty good list of beers and mixed drinks, and our waiter recommended we tell her what we liked...so the bartender could surprise us. I went for a Belgium beer, but one of my friends went for the surprise. Needless to say, the bartender surely delivered! Coming here for the first time, I really have to tip my hat to the musicians that evening: Citizen's Jazz! Such amazing jazz play, creating such a lively atmosphere! Apparently they have gigs all over the SF region, and I'm not surprised why...they're really good! Well, I'm definitely keeping Comstock on my list of favorite bars in the SF area. For a place more known for classic cocktails, the bartenders are pretty versatile. I got the Barkeep's Whimsy and asked the bartender for rye, citrus, tartness, and he created something pretty good with rye, lemon, mint, campari, and angostura bitters. I tried some of the other cocktails friends ordered, and the Pisco sour from the menu was nice and light, but nothing else blew me away. It is nice that they have some booths there, and there are two bathrooms, both of which were clean. On the other hand, I wouldn't make this a craft cocktail destination. read more

Located in the former San Francisco Brewing Co. building (RIP), this Barbary Coast-themed joint - owned by the dudes behind Absinthe - is a classy North Beach addition. If you're in the mood for vintage cocktails served in gorgeous stemware, old timey piano tunes, mustachioed servers, and, er, bone marrow pot pie (drool!) this is the place. Warm days for me are spent at one of the sidewalk tables, mint julip in hand; and cold nights, basking in a booth inside the dimly lit dining room with a sazarac and a plate of chicken-fried rabbit. This may not be the Gold Rush era, but this place sure feels like a bonanza! read more

Is it possible for the drinks, service, atmosphere, music or food at Comstock to get any better? The simple answer is NO. There's simply no room for improvement here. That said, to guarantee a perfect experience, I recommend the following: First, sit in the front room in a booth (which can easily fit up to 6 people) or at the bar. Second, order the rabbit dish. Repeat often. Last night's menu also included other tasty items including a flank steak dish served as a deconstructed taco complete with tortillas, green salsa, avocado and beans. It was delicious. I also tried the gnocchi dish which came with English peas, radishes and mushrooms. This was also enjoyable. In short, I've been here before and I'll come again. I'm a regular here. The service at Comstock Saloon was some of the best I have received in San Francisco. Instead of waiting at the bar for 20 minutes to ask the bartender for a menu, he promptly passed one towards me and my friend as soon as he saw us enter the bar. It was crowded, and the host went out of his way to find us a place to sit. Our server was incredibly attentive, and didn't seem put-off at all by the fact that we were only ordering drinks and dessert. I was blown away... I've never been treated so well! The live music was tucked away in a loft above the bar, which was perfect because it didn't take away any floor space, and made it enjoyable instead of awkward. (see: musicians who come to your table.) On to the goods. The drinks are STRONG. We ordered a Hop Toad and a Blood & Sand. I guess we should have expected to be knocked over based on the descriptions, but we were obviously not very observant. They were good, just verrrrry stiff. For dessert, we got the maple pudding, which was awesome. It had a great, real maple syrup flavor. I can't wait to go back for a full meal! read more

After reading Bauer's review for the Chronicle, where he claims the cocktails are some 'the best in the city,' I am left asking myself really? My overall experience at Comstock was nice. Three friends and I walked in around 8pm this last Friday and were promptly seated at a booth. Our waiter was thorough and helpful, but he did seem a little unhappy when we decided to only order drinks. Nevertheless, he brought our drinks over with a smile and left us to enjoy them. I was really excited to taste my South Side, but really... I shouldn't have been. I would say it was fair at best. I gave my friends' drinks a try, which included the John Collins and the Hop Toad. All seemed to miss the mark. I feel that given the ingredients in each drink, many of us could mix a better cocktail. A certain expectation comes when paying ten a drink and the drinks here just do not make the cut. Bored with my drink I kept looking over the menu. I was tempted by a few of the appetizers and was pretty close to ordering something until I caught a look at some of the food plates at the bar. I do not know what it was, but it was the worst presentation of food I have ever seen. The image of a chubby 5 yr. old boy serving himself at HomeTown Buffet should come to mind. I am curious to know what gin was used to mix my drink. I should have asked after finishing it, but it seemed a moot point. The impression was made. Something is lacking at Comstock. This review is just for the drinks--and the awesome HISTORY of this place. First off, they make an exceptional Manhattan. I order Manhattans like I order Diet Cokes: with pretty much every meal I have. Thus, if I say they make one of the best I've ever tasted, I'm not exaggerating. On the other hand, their Happy Hour special at this time--the Holland House--was only OK. Told it was 'citrus-y,' I didn't quite except the lemon to smack me in the jaw and override the gin entirely. Next time I'll try their famed Cherry Bounce--apparently listed "one of the 50 best cocktails to try before you die." Considering the fact that a Cocktail Quest is pretty much exactly what I would seek to accomplish were I to know my specific expiration date, I appreciate this. Now for the special stuff: This saloon was started way back in 1907 (and the building itself housed the second oldest bar in San Francisco). It was named for Henry Comstock of the famed Comstock silver lode in Nevada. The space is extremely cool-looking, very frontier-chic, and one can imagine oneself in Edwardian shirtwaists or boating hats, sitting at the dark wooden bar under the framed 19th century illustrations and watching the horses and carriages clatter by. The effect is enhanced by the hipsters who frequent this place: their beards and waxed mustaches, their suspenders, bowler hats, and watch chains, and their adorable bobbed-hair, red-lipsticked girlfriends in their high-buttoned Mary Poppins shoes make you want to order a Sazerac, unfold the newspaper, rave about the Queen and bitch about the Kaiser. Went here a few days after they opened. I have absolutely nothing to complain about. The place was beautiful, absolutely gorgeous! So many original details, has a very old NYC building feel to it (which I personally don't think we have enough of in SF, thanks to all the red tape). The staff was super friendly and the drinks were great. Not syrupy, classic and spirit driven. This place is definitely geared towards local folks who enjoy great cocktails. NOT geared toward the vodka drinking bridge and tunnel crowd at all. I am sure eventually they will get complaints about the drinks taking too long and the lack of "vodka like" drinks but YAY for SF, we finally have a reason to go to North Beach!! We went in the afternoon and it wasn't busy, so I'm sure it is a different vibe at night. Being that it wasn't busy it gave us the opportunity to get some time with the bartender and tell him what we liked. He made a couple of cocktails from the menu with a bit of twist to fit what we were looking. I love places that take the time to listen and actually care what you like too. I met my gf Priya here for lunch..and was delighted by the food! We both ordered off the Prix Fixe menu- We both got he pork and hominy soup, I got the mushroom and asparagus panini and she got the oyster po'boy. Our plan was to share. The soup was slow cooked to perfection--big chunky pieces of pulled pork, hominy, and sprinkled with some picked cabbage. The panini was okay, but the po'boy was out of this world. The big pieces of oyster were fried with light cornmeal batter. Dressed with ketchup and a Delicious cole slaw. It was worth the calories splurge. I had to rush back to work so we ended up taking our dessert to go-Boubon pudding. I didn't get to try it but am sure it was Delicious! Everyone in the Fidi should come here for lunch! read more

The vibes in this saloon are real chill and an absolute perfect place to go for drinks with friends. Absolutely, 100% it elicits that 1800's saloon feel and it rocks. Now onto the star of the show......THE BARTENDERS! These Comstock bartenders are true mixologist. If you do not like anything on the cocktail menu or just do not know what you want, they can concoct something for you. All you need to say are the flavors you want and off they go. The magic begins and poof an awesome drink appears before you. I had gone with the magic words. Light.....Fresh....Citrus..... Out came one of the best drinks I have ever tasted in my life. My partner tried to sneak all of this for himself. The rich creamy mousse came with little crunchy bits of candied hazelnuts in it to balance the texture. No, I can't eat bone marrow pot pie and my stomach turns a little thinking of hen stuffed with chorizo, but I have braved the fritters, figs and some of their desserts. They are all fabulous! Fabulous. Once a vegetarian, I will vouch for every veggie option they have. Baked beans, alligator toast, beet sandwiches - everything is prepared with the same care as their regular menu. All are succulent and rich, sans animal. I feel like I rarely get to try new food these days, but EVERY time I come Comstock, I am delighted by new flavors. EVERY time, my mouth rejoices. Comstock Saloon offers a pleasurable experience. Head to the bar for a prohibition-inspired ambiance with a live band on some nights tucked upstairs- and order one of their delicious, artisanal cocktails. They are known for their Manhattan and it's made 7X7's list multiple times! The room next door offers a more quiet, sit-down/dining experience if you want to come here for a full-on dinner. Great for a date spot. Or, sit at the bar if you want to admire and watch them hand-craft your cocktails! They also have small plates/shareable plates like their pickled eggs, which are creative and quite tasty.
