Based on good Yelp reviews and a phone consultation, I decided to meet with Gene in San Francisco to explore some different hardwood options. This is after viewing and pricing hardwood and installation services in San Jose. I knew upon meeting Gene that he was a good man who could be trusted, and I felt confident from the Yelp reviews that his execution and guidance would be top-notch. When you have high expectations, it is easy to be disappointed. NOT the case here! I am happy to report. Gene worked with me on finding the right wood, which in my case was 3" tigerwood, for a price that allowed me to do the nursery, as well as our priority rooms, the master bedroom and living room. He also was able to get the work on his calendar within a few weeks, and he and his crew worked hard to finish the complete job in 3 days, just in time for company coming, not to mention a baby getting very close to coming! I am especially grateful that Gene and both of his really professional, hard-working, polite, capable, and timely crew members were courteous and considerate to my 8 months pregnant condition. They helped with moving furniture, and really going the extra mile in making the floors nice, taking care of a little varnish issue for me that would have gone undone for a few days as my husband was traveling during the work. I plan to finish the whole house off in a second round, time yet to be determined. Although we did not use the services provided by Gene at Concept Materials, I wanted to post a review anyway. Of the four companies we received bids from, Gene was the only person who provided an estimate the same day. He arrived on time, had a warm personality, and was very helpful in answering our questions. When my wife and I told him that we were interested in Maple, he recommended Canadian Maple as he whipped out his cell phone and called his supplier on speaker phone in our presence. We liked the transparency of this action as we knew exactly what the material costs would be. When asked about his labor rate, Gene broke down the total costs of the project so that we could understand his pricing. He even offered to go to Calwood (www.calwood.com) with us to purchase the Canadian Maple flooring. In addition, he told us that he would deliver the wood to the house as part of the job. I recently had laminate flooring installed by Concept Materials and I am very happy with the results. Gene came by my place at a time that was convenient for me in order to gather the necessary measurements and provide answers to the questions I had. After the consultation, I ended up having to wait on the ordering of supplies and installation for quite some time. By the time I was ready to move forward, I had lost the measurements. I recently hired Gene to install engineered wood floors in our new house. I couldn't have asked for a better experience with Gene and Concept Materials. an explanation for each of the 5 stars: 1) he came in at a better price than the competition 2) he was transparent and up front about all of the details of the installation and costs 3) he helped us pick the right material for the space. he educated us about the options and even had the warehouse open up the palettes of wood to show us the variation of the grain we were choosing. 4) he was patient with our questions (we had many) 5) he was flexible with his schedule to accomodate ours (we had to push the starting date of the work by over a week!) bonus: I noticed a couple of small imperfections the day after the workers left and as soon as I mentioned it to Gene, he immediately went over and fixed every little thing at no extra cost. Concept materials installed my floors in March 2009 to less than stellar results (see previous post). After seeing my Yelp, the situation was remedied. HOWEVER, several months later the floor started to buckle. A housing inspector told us the floor was installed too tightly and that the contractor should do right by us. I called Gene at concept materials and he continuously told me that the inspector was wrong. He told me to order many more boxes of flooring because I had water damage. I thought this was fishy so I had a new contractor come in to take a look. Not only did they agree with the inspector that it was improperly installed by concept materials, they fixed it on the spot. I did not have to order more floors nor was it a water problem. Concept Materials is a huge disappointment and I felt scammed because they hire grunts to do the actual work. read more

We had selected Concept Materials for our entire house 3000 sq ft floor upgrade. Gene had inspected the floor, recommended the best approach and brought in samples. We have also met Gene at the showroom and he helped us select the perfect floor. We went with engineered hardwood glue-down on a concrete slab. Gene and the team did proper existing hardwood and carpet removal and cleanup. All phases of the install were done on-time and on predetermined schedule. We are very satisfied with the work that Concept Materials did for us. We had the entire downstairs, plus stairway fitted with hard wood floors. Gene came down and gave us a proposal for a few options. The installation was very professional and high quality. There were no surprises in the process. In our quest to replace our old hardwood floors and carpets we must have talked to atleast 6-8 flooring contractors. Gene's quote though not the lowest of them all was the most reasonable. From the first time he came to the house to take the measurements to every interaction, he was prompt, crystal clear and precise, believe me in the world of contractors thats a rare. Our flooring project had a few challenges, an uneven floor, transition to marble, tight timelines, need to show near completion before final inspection. Gene and his crew had a creative solution to tackle each of those. Most importantly the quality of workmanship and attention to detail is awesome. Our flooring lot had larger no of 3 ft planks than normal, Gene's crew cleverly placed those towards the edges so that it is less visible and under the furniture. My wife and I had hardwood and cork floors installed in our home by Concept Materials. They did an outstanding job. From the bidding process to the finished job, Concept Materials was a pleasure to work with. The proprietor, Gene, explained the process to us very clearly so we always knew what they were doing and why. They are a full service organization, unlike other contractors who would have required us to hire movers separately to move the furniture in our house to some storage area. Gene, however, told us all we had to do was pack all the loose items and his crew would move the heavy furniture themselves. Furthermore, they did our house in stages so that we could still live in it while they worked. Again, this is in contrast to other bidders who told us we would have to move to a hotel for the duration. Given all the benefits of going with Concept Materials, it was clear to us which contractor would win the bid and within four days of the start date, we had beautiful Brazilian Cherry installed in every room but the kitchen. Rolando, the foreman, and his crew paid attention to every detail so the overall effect was extremely elegant. When unexpected problems occurred, they were very proactive about finding alternate solutions and consulting with us so that the change was acceptable. At one point, they were surprised to discover that some floor tiles that we were expecting them to remove could not be detached as they were on top of three inches of concrete. They immediately called us to suggest engineered hardwood flooring in that section, and installed it in a way so that the difference was barely noticeable. Initially, we were going to have only the living room and bedrooms done, but as we watched them work and realized how high the quality of their work was, we decided hire them to install cork flooring in our kitchen. For this additional project, we ordered the material ourselves, unlike the Brazilian Cherry, which Concept Materials supplied. Unfortunately, we did not order enough and the work had to stop with only 95% of the kitchen done. Even though the error was ours, Gene assured us that mistakes like this happen and that he would send his crew out again once we had the additional material ready. For this additional trip out to finish the job, he could easily have charged us a convenience fee, but he did not. So we voluntarily compensated Concept Materials ourselves. Concept Materials is an excellent organization and has a highly professional proprietor and crew. We would hire them again without wasting our time with the bidding process. The only unfortunate thing about them is that they don't do stone or tile or we would hire them for our bathrooms as well! But they are definitely a 5 star organization. read more

I had my floor installed a couple of years ago. I would give Gene 6 stars for effort and attitude towards making the customer happy. They came back a couple of times to fix minor issues. They also finished the work ahead of time and always made sure that everything was clean before they left. They also finished the work slightly ahead of schedule and were by far, the cheapest. Also, they were very easy to work with, going to extra mile to coordinate with the painters and all the other contractors. I always had the nagging feeling that the work wasn't perfect, so I asked a neighbor who happens to be a contractor and he said that the floor was well done. That put that concern to rest. We wanted to put bamboo floors in the living areas of our house, and Gene and Concept Materials were recommended by someone at work. Gene came by for an estimate, and I was impressed by his non-nonsense approach. He was very clear about what would be challenging about the installation, what would be easy, and how long it would take. One important thing is that I wanted to get the flooring myself from a specific vendor (Ambient Bamboo, which I also highly recommend if you're into bamboo), and Gene was flexible in giving me a labor-only price. (Some contractors insist they get the materials themselves so they can mark up their contractor price.) What most impressed me was Gene's team of installers. They were very knowledgeable about installation, and gave us some advice on direction of planking, etc. They were always very polite and courteous with my wife and me when we moved around the house. And they were extremely detail-oriented, specifically with the following: 1) getting the first line of planking lined up 2) taking care not to mark up the floor they had already installed, especially since they had to move 2 refrigerators and a sofa 3) measuring and installing the stairs and stair noses 4) they were very efficient with the wood, with little wastage Gene's prices are very competitive, so I thought we might have to compromise a bit on quality, but that wasn't the case at all. They did well with the flat floors. They had much trouble with the stairs and left unfilled holes in the floor where the banister is and left sheetrock destroyed putting in the stairs. They asked for more money after their bid for the stairs. I willingly agreed as I knew from other bids that the stairs would be difficult. The disappointment was the reviews on YELP that lead me to Concept. Nice people but I realize that I did no know enough to write a detailed agreement. The agreement I wrote was signed a day before they began their work. They had to return 3 times to install the obvious, like molding and strips and the tracks for the closet doors. read more

They ripped out my old carpet and hardwood, dumped it, and professionally installed the new wood. ​Gene is very responsive, professional, and flexible.
