I'm not good with haircuts. I get small anxiety seeing someone chop away at my hair so I'm very particular on when I get it done and who does it. I haven't been to a salon since July 2020 - way over two years ago. My partner got frustrated seeing my hair all over the place so he decided for my birthday to get me a Groupon to Concepts to tidy up my hair. I had Eddie be my stylist and my goodness, I was impressed by him! We didn't make much talk but he automatically knew how I liked my hair done: v-cut, layers and some side bangs. All of these he knew without asking other than to confirm. The wash was great and relaxing and he kept reiterating what he's going to do next so I don't get scared. I am a Hairstylist, and the salon I work in was locked when I arrived because of the severe snowstorm on Thursday, February 13th. Thanks to the Girls at the reception, who called the salon owner to see if it would be OK if I were to do two clients. It was the end of the day, and the owner was exceptionally kind and allowed me to do my clients, I was very impressed by how well I was treated, and everyone who worked there was very friendly, so I would like to highly recommend Concepts Salon & Spa for being so accommodating and extremely friendly, also the work I saw was outstanding. read more

My review below is only on the waxing service. This is my first time writing a review, needless to say, I am extremely upset with this situation. The esthetician, Angela was incompetent, rude and unprofessional. She asked if I shave when she first examined me, I replied no, she shaked her head in a way that showed me she thinks I'm lying. She continued her dismay further as she worked on my bikini line. As she is yanked on my delicate area, she gave me her unsolicited advice that I should "come in every 4 weeks and don't shave, your choice!", I again breathlessly reinterated that I don't shave and I have no reason to be lying but gave up when she gave me the same 'I don't believe you' look. As she tugged and yanked at my skin for another 15 mins (normally Brazillian waxes elsewhere takes 15 mins to complete), it felt more painful than all my Brazillian waxes combined in my lifetime. As I started to wonder about investing into laser removal, I felt her tear into my already bleeding and bruised flesh over and over again. I screamed out in pain at the same moment she threw her hands up in the air and said she doesn't "know what to do with it" and "I've never seen anything like this before". Besides being astound that I have just been labelled an alien, I dumbfoundedly thought, wtf do you mean you haven't seen anything like this?? Lol.. is my skin green and hair purple?? That was the moment, I said, "OK stop, just stop." How can I give this person access and trust to my private part when the "professional" herself can't figure what to do?! She then scoffed, "how are you going to walk? You have wax all over you." I told her to give me some oil or cream to take it off. I didn't have the patience to explain to her that I would rather have wax suck to me than to have her pull and tug at my bleeding, bruised and swollen lady bits any longer, especially when she has waxed the same spot 6 times already. As I got up, she had to add, "I do 2-3 bikini waxes a day, and I've never had a problem like yours." Wow, really? You're going there? I couldn't help but to say, "Well you are obviously not skilled enough". "Too bad", she retorted and walked out. For the record, I went out on the street looking for another waxing place that can fix this situation, with today's 35+ humid summer weather, I found that the wax was melting between my legs as I walked. Luckily, I found a place on my way back to work and this lady cleaned me up well, in under 10 mins (there was still quite a bit of hair left behind) and with minimum pain. The second esthetician told me the trick is to wax the hair from the different directions that it grows. If you are reading this Angela, please take notes. This was a Groupon deal that I had purchased, two vouchers, in fact, one for my friend and one for myself. I was told by Cindy at this establishment that I can request for my refunds through Groupon since the transaction was made by visa. Before this experience, I was hopeful that this spa will do a good job and I can go back often as it was close to my workplace, but after this, never again. read more

Worst hair experience I've ever had in my life. I decided to have Elsie to colour my hair and do haircut. Not only she did not tell me she would charge me 3 toners in the process ( she just went ahead without telling u in the process) she then burned my scalp and it still left me burned mark on my scalp few months after. Haircut was probably 2 minutes haircut as I can barely notice any haircut at all. She quoted me $200 in the consultation and I had to pay almost $350 at the end for the colour that wasn't even close to what I asked for. This place is a bit hard to find. Take the escalators down one floor and turn left. I usually don't care about my hair so I bought a Groupon for a haircut and it wasn't the best experience with Elsie. It was the fastest haircut I've ever had and don't think that was a good thing. There were uneven ends. The haircut ended so quickly that I was so confused when she started to style my hair. When she was blowdrying my hair, she gave me completely the wrong part, which was a first for me. My experience at Concepts Salon & Spa was TERRIBLE. What a huge disappointment! First, my hairstylist named, Jodi, did not show up for the appointment. I ended up leaving the salon after waiting for about 15-20 minutes. My appointment was at 10am but Jodi was nowhere to be found.... Receptionists suggested that I reschedule but why would I come back and waste my time? I wasted 20-30 minutes just to get to the Salon for no show. When I asked for updates, receptionists pretended to know by saying, "she said she'll be few minutes late..." I responded, "15-20 minutes doesn't equal few minutes." They agreed to cancel the appointment. What a huge waste of my time. Second, receptionists were not friendly at all. Upon my arrival, I had to wait by the front desk because the receptionist #1 (Asian woman) was on the phone. I didn't mind that she was on the phone (doing her job) but she didn't acknowledge my presence quickly enough so I felt a bit out of place. The receptionist #2 (taller Asian woman) showed up and she offered to help. After confirming my appointment, she said to wait by "the side" but didn't tell me where to wait exactly... I was standing alone without much help for some time. I had to ask where to wait again. After that, I was basically left alone in the corner until I demanded updates on where the hairstylist was... No one knew... LOL Based on my experience, I'll NEVER go back. read more

Do NOT go to this salon. The owner is extremely money hungry and does not care about client's satisfaction. I had a very bad first experience at this salon and they tried to play it off like offering me a "free fix" within 30 days (which they are legally obliged to do) was something complimentary and out of their concern for me. The hair stylist put my hair in a specific style so the colour and cut looked right until I took it out of the style 2 days later and noticed it was all wrong. The stylist took more time styling my hair than actually doing what I had asked. It was my first time at the salon. I am mixed with curly hair so I dm'd the stylist beforehand to make sure she was comfortable highlighting and cutting my hair texture. She was a nice person but I asked for layering yet my hair was cut shorter in the back and she gave me mini bangs without asking for my permission first. You do not give clients bangs without their permission. On top of that, the colour was nothing like what I asked for. I attached images below of the style I asked for vs. what I was given. I hope you're just as appalled as I am. I called the salon as soon as I took my hair out of the coils and after speaking with the secretary, I was told I would get a call back from the manager the next day. I was polite and patient even after the manager didn't call me and I had to take it upon myself to call the salon to check in about the status of my complaint. The secretary, who was nice, told me she relayed my message to the owner and he instantly declined any form of compensation. All I asked for, after an $190 service plus $30 tip (because the style deceived me) was to receive half of my money back or money for at least the highlighting portion of the service (even though the layering was botched as well). After asking numerous times to speak to the owner myself, so that I could explain my perspective and send him pictures of the results, I was told he was "too busy" and was not even going to give me the opportunity to contact him via email or leave him a voice message. Any owner who won't even give a client the time of day after having a horrible experience at their salon, with stylists they chose to hire, is not worthy of owning a salon and having a lot of business. I got a hair cut, conditioning and style from Dania using my Groupon. It was so professionally done and very pleasant experience from start to finish. I am very easy going. I'm happy with the way she did everything from the hair service to being personable to a customer. She took her time, and I did not feel rushed which I was afraid would happen. When I thought that she would finish soon, nope, she attended to her task diligently. Love my hair and love that I found her. The style was one of those experience I t ehmkvie. You know, when the woman has her hair done up and the wind blows on it, she feels like, "man, I have beautiful hair, and I'm gonna show it off" moment. Well that was me. I did not want to touch it, that's how good it was. When I went outside, where there was actual wind, I really felt like the described feeling... however, it was real wind and not movie set wind, so I got some hair on my Lips, and then I had to brush it off, then run my hand through my hair, and it felt nice. Oh my goodness, HIDEH is the best hairstylist I've ever had!! He has a Japanese style and is so attentive and clearly passionate about hair. He doesn't speak a lot of English, but he makes sure he knows what you want and communicates his plan clearly as well. He also has an iPad mini so show pictures. I am just so amazed by his attention to detail and his passion. I will definitely return for Hideh! As for the salon itself, it looks pretty old and a bit run down, but they're all very nice and professional there. I would definitely recommend the Groupon if you are considering :) read more

I'm never happy with my haircuts. My hair sucks. Several years ago my ex-wife took me to an austere and beautiful apartment high up in an Upper West Side apartment building overlooking central park to meet her hair stylist Giles. Giles was a very fabulous and tall lanky gentleman dressed in all black with a grace and polish only possessed by those several generations into old money. What would be the living room only contained 2 barbers chairs in front of their respective mirrors. Giles would tell us stories such as once doing Hillary Clinton's hair and his various other movements in NYC high society with its associated gossip. Were the stories true? It didn't matter. He gave us free espressos and biscotti, and with graceful economic movements he cut my hair like a pro. I'd never got such a high quality cut before. Charge: $300 (without tip) USD. I was unaware this was the deal and crapped myself. Since then I've been mostly unimpressed until I was auspiciously placed with Satoshi @ Concept due to a scheduling conflict. Now, keep in mind, Satoshi is a total trip. If you're a person who is easily offended, he is probably not your guy. But I will tell you this.: Satoshi is not just a hair stylist. He is a Master Craftsman at the top of his craft. He understands exactly what I want while I give him terrible, ambiguous descriptions. This is because he understands how to perfectly balance out someone's face with their hair and overall style. His aesthetic is also modern, yet not pretentious. I go in looking like I normally do, which is a train-wreck, and I come out as a meticulously well styled man. The difference in the framing of my face is at times transformative. Although I obviously understand nothing about hair styling, it's obvious that he is not someone who sees his work as churn-and-burn. He clearly pays careful attention to the utter minutiae. Something only someone with genuine passion for their job knows. I get that. I respect that. I like that. While he's cutting your hair he'll talk sh*t, and it's funny as hell. I came here one day to have my hair styled for a semi-formal evening event. I do not recall the name of my stylist, but she was not very good. She was not engaged, and when I asked her for suggestions, she was not very helpful or enthusiastic. The salon felt like more of an in-and-out shop rather than providing a spa-like environment. The whole place is rather worn down and in need of a facelift, and the bathrooms could certainly do with a better cleaning job. Overall I would not return as I paid the same amount for my style as I would have at a more upscale salon (e.g. Civello) and did not receive anywhere near the customer service experience that would have been provided elsewhere. read more

Hi there, Bought a groupon for a cut at Concepts and am really happy with my cut. My stylist was Lorena and she is awesome - a great cutter and just the right amount of talking. I came in with a picture of what I wanted and she very graciously led me in a "younger" direction and on inspection the hair cut I ended up with is perfect for my age/career. I'm an actor and my hair has to be on point 24/7 and I feel confident now. I'll be back. BTW there was NO extra charge beyond the groupon I paid for. There was no upsell of any kind and I was treated very well from the reception right on through to the reception at the end. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars is that the salon needs an overhaul. I have been here twice and I have had my hair done by the same person (Liz) and she is awesome!! She takes her time and educates me on why she is doing what to my hair, and always makes sure she understands my needs before she starts the process. I hate when stylists think they know your hair better than you do, and then try to be "creative" and in the end leave you with a cut you detest! But not Liz. She always leaves me feeling happy with my haircut, and I specially like that when she says she is going to straighten my hair, and she actually does---not like other stylists who begin the process, get overwhelmed because, "damn, you have a lot more hair than I realized," and then leave me with a "puffy-straight" look that I have to wash the minute I get home. As for the vibe and look of the place....leaves a lot to be desired. Considering that it is in a nice area (Yorkville), the salon needs a serious makeover. It feels like the place is falling apart! It irked me when I was having my hair washed, and I stared at the ceiling tiles that looked like they had barely survived a flood and an earthquake. I was in a bit of a rush after work one day and needed to get my face waxed (eye brows and upper lip). I knew I would not have time to go to my usual place because it's a good 10 min walk to the place and usually I always have to wait when I get their because they are pretty busy no matter what. I decided to try this place which is right beside my work. When I walked in the lady was friendly and told me it would be about a 15 minute wait for the esthetician. I was told to have a seat in the waiting area which I did. The area was comfy with big comfy chairs. Within minutes (maybe 5) I was called into the room. The lady who serviced me was friendly, very chatty, and asked lots of questions about my expectations with the service. Before doing anything she confirmed exactly what she was going to do and asked me if that was ok. I thought that was amazing. I can't even count the number of times I got for a clean up and walk out with a completely new look (which I didn't ask for). I felt this place to be a little small but welcoming in it's appearance. I found the price to be really expensive. With tip it cost me double to get my face down. I guess that is the price you have to pay sometimes for convince! I was really shocked but had no choice I was stuck for time but next time I will shop around my work a little better strictly because of that. read more

I came in and saw Johnny, first he's GREAT! Sweet sweet guy and what he did was cut it REALLY short i the back and left it long in the front (you know the style i'm taking about). He's incredibly knowledgable in colour and I will be going back for a colour. ALL my friends have told me it looks amazing and my boyfriend LOVES it (and he REALLY REALLY hates short hair). He made me feel really comfortable and the way this man uses scissors is...just simply a show! It's a bit expensive, $60 for a cut...but honestly worth EVERY penny. Had an awful experience. Was there for 6 hours trying to correct it. Hair no where near what I asked for. Was extremely upset and crying and still charged me full price. Never buy hair product from this store. Bought hair products from this store, shampoo and hair conditioner worth over $20 each bottle. When I called them to complaint about the product , lots of hairfall, itchy and extreme dryness after use- the staff refused to accept returns, no refunds and no exchange - the bottle pump was not working. staff said to go dollar store to buy a new bottle and transfer the product , or buy a new lid. they do not want to see the defective product, poor customer service/bad experience . I have been to many hair salons, but this is the worst hair salon I have ever been to . Don't rely on this place to keep your appointment. This use to be two separate locations and much better service, I stopped visiting this place when they merged into one salon. It's now loud and busy and they rush you through. Not having been in over a year, I was in a bit of a bind to get my hair done so I made an appointment a week in advance. They called me the day before and asked if I could move my appt from 1pm to 10:30 on a Saturday, I said yes and moved my morning plans. 30 minutes before my now rescheduled appt, I was on my way and they called me to cancel saying that the hairdresser had called in sick. There was no acknowledgement or concern for my time that they wasted it that they had already rescheduled my appt, I would have been ok if they offered a discount or something for my trouble, but nothing. I've never written a review of any kind before. Like, I made a Yelp account to write this. I just got off the phone with Concepts, trying to book a haircut with the Groupon coupon I bought. The person told me she needed the barcode to set the appointment. Hm, I thought, no place has ever asked me for my Groupon barcode when I've scheduled (I've used a few groupons in my day). In the instructions on the Groupong, it says to simply mention the voucher when scheduling and present it when you arrive. I told her it's not visible unless I click the 'View the Voucher' tab, which essential means I'm cashing in the Groupon. No not that, she said, I'm not familiar with your device but it should be somewhere (I've got an iphone). I told her I can't see it anywhere. She said I need to hang up, figure out how to read the barcode without viewing the voucher and call her back. I don't her I don't think I can, I say, can she offer any guidance? Can we make the appointment without the barcode? All she kept repeating was the line, "Ma'am, we're going to hang up and you'll call me back when you figure out", like she was in hostage negotiations. I told her I'm hearing her but I don't agree that I can see the barcode without viewing the voucher and if we're at a stalemate, I'll have to get a refund. I had Lorena do my hair and it was a bad experience. I showed her many photos of what I wanted and told her I did not want it too short. The photo I showed her was a shoulder length cut. I left with an angled bob that is to my chin. Not at all what I asked for. That was 2 years of hair growth cut off. She did not take what I had asked for at all. She seemed talented enough as this is a nice cut but not for me. It is so short I can't even put it in a pony tail and I was explicit about this. So upset and disappointed. Today I had a haircut with Eddy. Being that it was a $35 Groupon haircut, I really didn't expect a whole lot but I wasn't fussed as all I really wanted was a simple clean up on my dead ends. Eddy took his sweet slow time giving me my hair wash--- which of course was AMAZING! Um, yes PLEASE I'll take triple the head massage time! That alone was worth the Groupon lol. Moving on to my cut, he again took his time and did not make me feel rushed at all. As we chatted I learned he does this as his hobby and has another full time job in the day -- this was so touching and made everything make sense. He is passionate and simply loves doing hair. I had a tough time finding it, it was in an underground mall across the street by Bay Station. I chose this place because I was looking for a place to get my hair done with a groupon and the yelp reviews weren't bad. I wouldn't consider this a high-end salon by the looks of it, it was kind of dark and dusty, some of the chairs had cracks and cuts in them and it was a bit crowded. Their deep conditioning treatment I think was just putting conditioner in my hair, saran wrapping it and heating it up with a dryer. I'm not sure if that's common but I imagined a deep conditioning treatment to be something a little... nicer. However, Liz was very nice and gave me exactly the cut and style that I wanted. No complaints about the stylist but if they are charging $80 for a cut, style and conditioning they should put some of that towards sprucing the place up. I would pay the groupon price and come here again... just not for $80. :) read more

I came here from Groupon. I got a great haircut, Eddy did exactly what I wanted and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I had pretty long hair but I didn't get charged extra despite the Groupon fine print saying there was a fee for longer hair. Overall, the service was good and I like my new haircut. This was my first time going here, and I got Liz. I had blonde hair and was going dark chocolate brown - I had brought some pictures with me to show her what type of look I was trying to achieve. First, she put a "filler" into my hair because the colour wouldn't stick to the blonde otherwise. She didn't use developer and used water instead, assuring me that this worked with all of her previous clients. The filler did not stick, and she blatantly told the stylist the next station over and kept saying things like "oops" and "oh crap" and even laughed at one point! Really unprofessional and it made me really uncomfortable. Then she washed it out and tried again - with developer this time - it worked. I had told her several times that I wanted a DARK chocolate brown - almost black - but she refused, saying that my skin was too light and it wouldn't look right - but last time I checked, it was MY hair, MY money, and MY choice. So she did it a shade lighter, and no surprise, when she dried my hair, it was way too light - not what I wanted at all. She proceeded to do (or should I say TRY to do) waves in my hair, but she yanked the iron so hard that my ends were ripped and fried and my hair was like hay when I left. My experience at concepts salon was amazing right from making the appointment on the phone to my hair stylist jodi. I called to make the appointment today and they were able to accommodate me today which was amazing :) I arrived the place is below the gap a little strange to find but hey I love an adventure! The place is very popular lots of clients smiling and laughing right when you walked in which we great to see ! I was greeted by jodi who literally is the most energetic funny person I have met in the hair industry. I expressed to her that I wanted to keep my length and my gear of salons as many have been scissor happy leaving me crying in the salon chair. She gave me her honest opinions while keeping my needs a priority. She made me feel like one of her friends we had many conversations and laughs which was refreshing from going to very stuffy salons. Honestly she gave me one of the best cuts I've ever got and she styled literally like a Victoria secret model (she kept to her word)! Thank you so much jodi you truly are amazing and I can't wait to come back for great cuts and great laughs ! I've been here a couple of times, and mostly because of a Groupon that I purchased the first time. I've always requested Xuan/Sun who is a very friendly stylist, but knows her style/techniques really well. I've gotten highlights (partial) done, and cuts as well, and they always turn out great. I asked her plenty of questions, from tips, styles, and recommendations, and her answers across very honest and not intended to upsell anything. As for my Groupon experience, I was treated very courteously, and not like they expected me to be a one-time customer only. The area is very clean, spacious with lots of magazines to keep you entertained. They are very punctual, and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my stylist. It does get very busy so it's something to keep in mind when booking your appointment. No one tries to upsell me anything which is something I really appreciate. I was more than happy to purchase a few recommended products without any pressure. Groupon was $59 (Cut, partial highlights, and style). Taxes was around $7 and I always tip around $10-ish (on the actual value of the Groupon). Great place and highly recommended! read more

I had my roots coloured and asked for the colour to be pulled through. The stylist didn't pull it through and it looks like a straight line basically in my hair. The worst part though is that someone else blow-dried by hair and though he tried, he couldn't fix my bangs which look stringy and bad from the last cut with the stylist. The stylist didn't check back with me in the end. At the cash register, I expressed that I wasn't very happy but the receptionist said NOTHING. Didn't even ask what was wrong. Came here for haircut using Groupon on a Saturday at 11am. The groupon costs $35 excluding tax & tip - includes wash, cut, and style. I had a great experience here, Eddie cut my hair and did a great job! He did exactly as I asked (shorter length near my shoulder with side swept bangs). It was also nice because I didn't feel rushed, he took his time, about an hour to cut and style. And he was friendly as well - I would consider coming back again and request for him. Very convenient location at 60 Bloor Street West, underground, with easy access to the TTC (and the Lindt store for that free sample!) The place felt crowded, chaotic, and messy. Coat check available. Jodi, an apprentice, cut my hair for the appointment I booked using a Groupon. Taxes weren't included. She did a great job, was very accommodating and welcoming, but extremely harsh (not gentle) with her comb and scissors. Will probably not return as a result. read more

Today was my first time trying Concepts and I was scheduled with Liz. I had some old highlights that I was looking to cover up with a colour closer to my natural hair, as well as get a cut. I originally went in asking for a partial of low lights but after patiently speaking with me and getting a good understanding of what I wanted my hair to look like in the end, Liz offered me a completely different option that she felt would achieve the results I wanted in a much more effective (and healthier!) way. She couldn't have interpreted what I wanted any better, and she did an amazing job matching to my natural colour. I'm so happy she used her own judgement and suggested a different route than I had originally wanted. And throughout the whole process she was so friendly and did an amazing job explaining exactly what she was doing. As for the cut, I'm always hesitant from a few bad experiences but again, after showing her a couple pictures of what I wanted, Liz nailed it! She also styled it perfectly to suit me - nothing too over the top. All in all, I have never left a salon happier and will definitely be returning to Liz! read more

I came to this salon a week ago wanting to get some small streaks of light blonde hair on the sides. I have dyed it black for over a year, so I knew it'd be difficult. I asked if they could get to the colour I needed if we bleached it, and they assured me we could. After my first visit, we were no where near what I wanted but when I paid a full price of foil colouring I asked the person cashing me out if they could double check with my stylist if my next visit would be included in my following appointment.. they assured me I was paying this amount for both visits, which were suppose to result in what I needed done. Today, a week later I came back, had a similar process to last time which pretty much was just me sitting with bleach in my hair, nothing special. I was even asked to blow dry my own hair because the girl that was working on me had her next appointment.. and they had not booked me for a blow dry.. so I said, okay, they are probably treating me like this since I already paid the service last time. . and they don't feel the need to treat me as well as they did last time. At the end of all this, they resulted by asking me to pay the exact amount I had paid last time.. I was confused, showed my receipt, and told them how I had asked last time if this continuation would be included and they had assured me it was.. I spoke with someone who claimed to be the manager but definitely did not act like it. She insisted I pay the amount, she refused to listen to my explanation, and did not even apologies on the behalf of her misleading staff. She stated that she was not there that day I had 1st came in, so my word against theirs was pretty much invalid. I felt frustrated, felt like it was unfair, and she threatened me by saying if I did not pay she would call security. I was offended, and for a manager she sure did not know how to treat clients. I am a very understanding person, but the fact that this happened absolutely ruined my day. Not only this, but I was left with a colour I did not even want, and in my previous payment I was assured they would be able to do it, which they did not. Take it from me, do not go to this salon, would not recommend it to anyone. read more

I bought a Groupon and book with 60 Bloor location with a intermediate stylist. She was quite friendly and discussed with me before we cut the hair. The style she cut is not bad, however, the bangs is awful. There is no layer to park my bangs in the right position. I have discussed the awkwardness on the spot with her and pointed out that the bangs feel not right, but she just cut it shorter. I don't know if this is a new trend to cut the bang or she is not experience enough to cut it properly. The bangs just annoy me a lot. :( read more

I went in about 3 months ago. Even though I had a little tiff with the hairdresser at first, my hair turned out exactly what I wanted. In the end she did listen. The space is not the best but they are friendly and know what they are doing. Will come back for sure! read more

Came for the great groupon deal, will come again for the great hair :) I had a haircut highlight and style with Todd. He did a fantastic job and gave me great professional advice. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted but I trusted and I'm very happy with the results. Highlights are beautiful and the layers he cut are working wonders for my hair. I got a great low maintenance cut that still looks great without professional styling. Very pleased! read more
