This is one of the most laid-back BJJ schools I've ever been to in 11 years of training and Professor Chris makes it easy to want to learn here. I dropped in recently as part of a larger project and from walking in, the music and cool nature of everyone on those green mats was very relaxed. One of the best things about this school besides it's cleanliness is how down-to-earth the leadership and therefore, culture, is. Good technique is something you can find anywhere [including here], but a good culture with a healthy, happy population of women and great music on the mats is a much harder find. Upgraded space, location and a brand spanking new jiu jitsu gym with so many amenities. The schedule is great. I personally enjoy the 0900AM breakfast club on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. I also enjoy the Zombies at 0530AM on Tuesday and Thursdays. The jiu jitsu curriculum is awesome. I enjoy the simplicity and options we get when I take class. The moves of the day builds on each other as the week progresses. You can roll until your heart's content at the end of class.  The gym is superbly clean. They have ghostbusters vacuum cleaners, alcohol spray to wipe your feet prior to getting onto the mat. I wish all gyms did this to keep feet and hands clean. Plenty of benches for parents to watch their kids. They have actual hand soap and paper towels in two individual bathrooms. Real fucking toilet paper. Changing rooms for both women and men with locker. There is even a separate room with mat space for privates.  The mat space is incredibly spacious with custom fuji mats. Cubbies for your belongings, a water filter station, and kettlebells.  The vibe of the community is very island vibes. Guam, Hawaii, Philippines and more. Make an effort to check out and you know what I mean.  The coaches are in it for life. There are so many black belts that are there you can learn from. Each with their own style. Want to compete? Came here several months ago from another great gym (Logic BJJ Lucas Rocha). I just moved from Pasadena to the Long Beach area. I'm currently a purple belt. Here's a few points: 1. Several people in the Los Angeles area told me I had to check out Conde Koma (none of those people were Conde Koma students). CK students had a reputation of being chill but also very skilled on the mats. Frequency, a group of CK students would visit areas like Little Tokyo fight club (along with other open mats) and they all had a great reputation. It's great when a place is recommended by other who roll with them. 2. Now that I've been here for a few months I can say the strongest focus of this gym is the development of skill. Each instructor is focused on the students getting better. The curriculum is incredibly focused and the entire class is spent in specific training, where students have to acquire skill. There is no choice. Chris is an excellent instructor. And while drilling there are usual several black belts to give us feedback. If they notice a pattern of incorrect technique, we'll all need to do the drill over again. After class, people stick around for rolls. You can roll as long as you'd like and you'll always find partners. 3. Focused rolls. The vibe of this gym is to roll at a moderate pace, but to focus on skill. No one really cares if someone gets tapped. What we care about is if someone learns from getting tapped (and makes adjustments). And if new skill is acquired. I think this starts with Chris and trickles down to everyone else. The gym is trying to get better together. We aren't out here trying to kill as many people as possible. Injuries are rare. 4. All their blackbelts are phenomenal. Belts are not given out easily here. All their brown belts give me all sorts of problems. Even the blue belts here are tough. The blackbelts are all humble, all skilled and if they want to bring it, they definitely can bring it. I haven't met a blackbelt who wasn't skilled here. I think that's a great sign. 5. New school mentality. They aren't really big on having people called professors. You arrive earlier and stretch and warm up on your own. They don't care if you bring other gis from other gyms. The owner and main instructor is there every single day. Chris doesn't carry himself like we need to bow down before him and kiss his feet. He's incredibly focused on others, not himself. He's watching everyone during the drills. This is not a BJJ cult. The focus of everything here is skill acquirement. 6. Facilities are top notch. The mats are clear and spacious and the entire gym in incredibly clean. We disinfect when we step on the mat and come off. The bathrooms are clean. The locker rooms are clean. Everything is done with a level of respect. 7. Big little gym. This is the biggest little gym I've been part of. Last Saturday we had about 50 students show up. During the morning classes, we usually see about 30 students. That's incredible. I think my Jiu Jitsu has really improved and coming here has given me a 3rd wind in my BJJ journey. My 10 and 12 year old kids have been going to Conde Koma for the past two years and they love it. Their coaches are positive, caring and will help your kids grow. My son has now started doing tournaments and the coaches will come to help and coach them on those days. I have a few friends who've trained here for years, and I finally took up their offer to visit as a drop in. I attended an actual class, so it gave me a more authentic experience. From the moment I walked in, the vibes at Conde Koma were super chill. They were playing Islander music as parents watched the kids class. The mats were clean and the place is well lit. Professor Chris ran the class and focused on Guard Retention from Open Guard. We transitioned to positional drilling after, and every partner I had was skilled and safe (I rolled with blue and brown belts). After class, it turned into an Open Mat scenario, and I rolled with blue, purple, and black belts. All were great partners once again. I highly recommend Conde Koma. If we move locally to this area, it will definitely be the gym for me and my son. read more

I was looking for a new gym, since my old one closed, and I gave Conde Koma a shot. E-mail communication was easy. I was able to set up a time and sign the waivers online. I ended up trying out a morning class. The mats are top notch (these are probably some of the nicest mats at any gym I've been to), the instructor was friendly, and the other students were very welcoming. After 1 trial class, I asked if I could try a 2nd class, and was told yes. There was no hard sell, no push to do anything, just general good vibes. My stepdaughter first started training at Conde Koma BJJ and it wasn't long until I started as well. My stepdaughter has always been on the shy side. We had just moved into the neighborhood and she was starting a new school. I enrolled her in Conde Koma and it did wonders for her self-confidence in school and life. I was back home in California visiting my family and decided to find an academy to train at. Chris, Laura, and the whole Conde Koma crew were great. The vibe of the academy was family like. Some places say they're like a family, but this was literally family(ies). Moms, Dads, Kids, all tarining. They have a kids play room where my 6 yr old hung out. Chris was welcoming as an academy owner/teacher and easy to talk to. Him and I had several good conversations about the academy and his bjj journey. The warm-ups were challenging (in a good way), the instruction was very good, and the training partners and other academy members were friendly - yet everyone I rolled with was good. Skilled, but no egos. Wish I would've been able to stop in more. If you're in the area visiting stop by and train. If you live in the area, no reason you shouldn't be training here. I have trained jiu-jitsu for over 15 years and been to the top jiu-jitsu gyms in the world. If you are looking for a good balance of good level training with a good family environment this place is perfect place to work out. My son and I have trained here since January 2014. Kids Program If you are looking for a kids program, look no further. They have lots of kids. Boys and Girls. Ages ranging from 4 to 14. Groups are separated by age and ability. You can tell it's a great program when you see lots of kids who have stayed with the school for 2 years or more. Jiujitsu is safe and healthy for children. Adults program Big range of students of different genders, weights, and abilities. Some students compete, plenty do not. No meatheads. A fun environment that works for the beginner, the 2 days a week student, and the 7 days a week student. If you are a Lady, this is a good place for you. You do not often find a school with enough women that (if you choose) you can only partner and spar with other women. Best of all, this is a fun informal training environment. Every day you show up, you will be glad you did. Facility Ideal mats. You can take a hard throw on these mats and be fine. Ladies and Gentleman's changing rooms, and a kids room. The kid's room is great because you can bring your kids here to hang out while you train. Also -and this is very important. The facility is extremely clean. The mats are sterilized daily. read more

Well I practice Aikido at the Sanbukan dojo, but when I had truck/trailer problems and was walking along Katella after dark finding only holes where payphones used to be, I stopped in this dojo as they were winding down after the evening workout. They were very kind about letting me use the house phone for help and didn't want the small stack of quarters I left. The dojo is big, clean, and looks fresh and well maintained. If you want to learn 1000 ways to break an attacker, I could not recommend finer people than those at Conde Coma to teach you. read more

I have been training with their head instructor and it has been amazing. He is truly dedicated to the craft and is one of the best instructors of martial arts I have ever trained with. I have been training in martial arts for over thirty five years, and have trained with several BJJ black belts with personal lessons and group lessons from well-known academies. However, the thing I like about Conde Koma is that they have a systematic and organized method of learning that allows progressive and technical development that leads to constant improvement. In the time that I have trained here, I have improved maybe 3 times faster than I usually do. My understanding of various positions and how to integrate various transitions and patterns into a whole jiu-jitsu game is now on a level that I never experienced before. Also, other points that I should mention is that this gym trains in an intelligent way, meaning that there is conscious effort to avoid the expense and downtime of unnecessary injuries, while still progressing at a very rapid pace. Part of the reason why I left my prior gym was because I kept on getting injured, I have not been injured once since joining CK BJJ. The prices are very fair and reasonable. As for the person complaining about non-responsive emails, I have been involved with martial arts gyms for decades, and that is industry norm. If you are serious, and ready to commit your life to a life-changing experience for the positive, you can show up and show that you are serious. You need to show the instructor that you are serious about learning also, it's a two-way street. read more

The adult classes are similar; there are always a good number of people at all levels to roll with and the instruction is top-notch. I took a class here and will be back for more. I came during the training before Pan-Am's, and there were several black belts who showed up. Of course these guys aren't always there, but the fact that they came to this place demonstrates the quality of the gym. I've been to a couple other gyms in the same time frame and did not see anyone of the competition-status of some of the people that were there training. The reigning Light Featherweight World Champion Gabriel Moraes was at the class, Leo Vieira (former World Champion) was at the class, and a reigning brown belt world champion was also there, those are just the one's I can remember. I think with the exception of when I took a class from the Ribeiro brothers, I have never seen more than one world champion (black belt) in a room at the same time (at least that I can consciously remember), pretty epic. and even as a blue belt I got to do a quick positional roll with Gabriel Moraes, and for someone of such a low belt to get to roll with a world champion is really a privilege. Anyways, of just there regular guys there were still a couple browns and purples and maybe some blacks I wasn't exactly sure who was visiting and who was permanent (in regard to the black belts). During the rolling period at the end I got to roll with a brown belt, I think two purple belts, and a blue belt who submitted me, I can't even remember the last time a blue belt submitted me. Also, there higher belts were all dominating me, it is clear that none of these guys are paper belts like at some other schools. I've walked into schools where I was able to submit and dominate most of their purples, not here, these guys are all legit for their belt ranking. Also, the pricing was very upfront. Some schools are still in the dark age where they do the jiu-jitsu equivalent of 4-square (no, not the credit card processor, it's an old car sales strategy where they write down all the numbers on a piece of paper, it's super ghetto). He handed me a binder and it had mens, womens, kids pricing for various contract lengths including month-to-month and various times per week (obviously including unlimited) all on one page. these guys actually charge what an average jiu-jitsu gym costs, but considering these guys are one of the few who qualify for above average, they are actually cheap when compared to other gyms of similar quality, and their month-to-month is also a lot cheaper than most gyms. Another random point, this gym lays a little more on the relaxed side. Random point #2 If you are a woman in the area, this is your best bet. I can consciously think of five women who were in the class. It's rare to have more than one woman in a jiu-jitsu class, so if you are a woman you will likely feel much more comfortable here. My son now trains at the academy and it's nice to be able to share and experience the art with him. It has definitely changed him into a better person. I started training at Conde Koma in July 2014. I have been there for four months now and I am very happy I chose this place. I looked at other schools and decided on Conde Koma for several reasons. 1. They have class times that can accommodate any work schedule. 2. There is never a shortage of bodies to roll with in every class including the morning classes. 3. There is never a shortage of higher belts to roll with (including black belts). 4. Higher belts are willing to roll with white belts (including black belts). 5. They have a well known competitive team (Checkmat), if thats your thing. 6. The instructors are highly versed in Jiu-Jitsu and very friendly and approachable. 7. Last but not least, your treated like family and not just a member.
