Just show up. This is a common thing you hear if you come to this gym. You will learn something new, and you will be challenged. This gym has such a great vibe, and everyone is a nerd. No BS; you can wear whatever gear you want. If you want to wear basic stuff or love all the hype beast gear, all are welcome. For a very physical sport, everyone is so welcoming. I've been going to this gym now for two years, and now I am a blue belt. I can honestly say I love jiu-jitsu because of this gym.

This has to be one of the best gyms I have ever trained at! Haley and Kevin are truly amazing coaches and people! They want you to succeed and help you every step of the way. From the Gi classes, Nogi classes, and fundamentals class. You will have all the tools to improve your jiu jitsu game and stay active. I trained with them for a year and two months before moving states and wish I could stay in Long Beach just for this gym! If you are looking for a gym, Jiu Jitsu League is the one for you.

An awesome dojo to be to begin your BJJ training :) I've been searching for BJJ place in Long Beach for sometime now. I am glad I finally found the one! The ambiance is super friendly and positive; there are no egotistic people around. Everyone is trying to help out each other when some (talking about me lol) are confused with a technique. The owners are unbelievably chill; they even have surfer status paraphernalia around the establishment. The instructors are technical, which is great when it comes to learning a complicated martial arts like BJJ. On top of that, the main instructor, Kevin Howell trained at the San Diego Atos (the #1 school of BJJ), which is impressive. Overall, I can tell they will hone my skills in the right direction and they really care about their students' success. Cannot wait to train again :) PS: When they clap to get ready to learn a new move, I am always late for a sec or 2 haha PSS: White belt dilemma :)

Had the chance to train here while visiting Long Beach and had an awesome time. A really friendly bunch of people and such a chill vibe. Got welcomed with open arms and was able to spar with a range of belts, all of which were extremely technical and challenging but kept the training fun and ego-free. Big, clean, open mat space was a huge plus also. Would highly recommend getting in for an open mat or classes if you're in the area (or even if you're not) thanks Haley, Kevin, and the team for a great experience.

one of long beaches hidden gems..gyms.... Jim's....lol. honestly the instruction here is 2nd to none. the head instructor kevin Howell is an encyclopedia of bjj techniques and applications. He has trained under and learned from some of the best who have ever done it. I'm shocked of the number of bjj practitioners that don't know about this amazing spot. the school is littered with beast of all sizes. lots of fun. they have a decent amount of competitors and a lot bjj lifers like me. I've trained at a few different places and can tell you that this school is amazing. Kevin howell is a wealth of knowledge in all old school techniques and keeps up on all the new stuff as well. if you love bjj and want to stop in, bjj visitors are always welcome.

I just started training at Jiu Jitsu League for a few months. So far I have had an amazing experience. This is my first introduction to BJJ. Kevin, the head instructor, and his wife Haley have been very welcoming and fun to train with. The same goes for all of the other students at J2L. Everyone has been very friendly, welcoming and helpful. I have been training with a lot of upper belts and the experienced students have been really cool, patient with me, helping me with tips and details and working with me on my endurance and pace. So far so good, but I think if you want a really quality academy with very relaxed and humble staff and students and a very professional atmosphere, J2L would be a great place to start. Looking forward to continuing my training. Such a good workout too!

    First stripe and sooooo proud!!

My son is 3 yo. Can he enroll in your classes?

We have had students begin as young as 3.5, so you're welcome to bring him in to try it out and see if he can make it through the class! We take the little ones on a case by case basis. Hope this helps!

Hello! I'm looking for a BJJ gym in LB. Could anyone give me an estimate of the cost of membership? Are there membership tiers? Thank you!

Hi Alfonso! We have lots of options for memberships. Please give us a call or come by so we can find the best option for your schedule and budget!

It was: Tony's quick text and warm, authentic conversation that made me feel comfortable enough to show up for my first appointment with CJ; CJ's care, humor, and no-frills approach that got me to sign up; Chris' kindness, patience, attentiveness, empathy, and expertise that keeps me going. But ultimately, it's the culture of this gym that truly makes Formula Fitness special; kind, welcoming, and inclusive, supportive and encouraging. When I started in January 2026, I wanted to improve my health, get stronger, and lose weight. What I've gained has been so much more. Being in my 40s, I've learned I can no longer approach fitness the way I did in my 20s. What worked years ago no longer serves the person I've grown into today, and Formula Fitness has helped tailor my fitness journey in a way that feels healthy, sustainable, safe, and realistic for this stage of life. Working with Coach Chris has completely changed how I think about fitness and nutrition. No quick fixes or pushing my body recklessly, but rather a focused approach to build up my strength, understanding how my body works, and creating habits I know I can sustain long term. I appreciate that my sessions focus on how I train safely helping me achieve beyond where I think I am at, but also ending with recovery. Today is now June 2026 and I've lost body fat, gained muscle, improved my overall health, and completely changed my relationship while taking care of myself. Being down 30 pounds in six months has simply been the cherry on top. The real transformation has been gaining energy, building healthier habits, understanding food and my body on a deeper level, and learning to care for myself. I have learned that fitness isn't about going back to who I once was, but about how to care for the person I am today. I'm incredibly grateful to Chris, Tony, Jay, CJ, and the entire Formula Fitness team for helping me do exactly that.

I am competing for Miss Universe Thailand this year, and my goal was to shed fat and tone up. Initial consultation was amazing, and Tony estimated that I could go from 122 lbs to 108 lbs in 3 months. That was the plan, until I found out I am moving to Thailand a lot sooner. With that being said, we took down my stats one last time this week before I have to leave for Thailand tomorrow. Starting from 2/23/22, I went from 122.8 lbs, 32.2% body fat, and 44.5 lean mass to 116.4 lbs, 23.6% bf, and 48.1 lean mass as of 4/5/22! I am so happy with my results and shocked at how quickly I am reaching my goals. Not only did my physique improve, but so did my sleep and diet. I am sleeping much more soundly, and getting more hours of sleep every night. My diet has improved immensely, and I feel a lot healthier physically and mentally overall. I worked out at Formula Fitness 2-3 times a week with Tony and Roger who are amazing trainers that care about your goals and workouts. On the other days, I did cardio on my own time. Before coming to Formula Fitness, I had not worked out in 2 years. The workouts definitely made you work but were still very doable. Tony also taught me about nutrition, and made sure I stayed on top of a well-rounded diet to reach my goals. As for the gym itself, it is very clean and organized. All of the trainers there are so friendly and helpful and make you feel at home. After having been there for a little while, it feels like you are working out with friends and family. So if you are worried about feeling intimated working out in a new gym, you will not have that problem here! Working out here has become the best part of my weekly routine, so I am really going to miss coming in person. But we will continue to train virtually while I am in Thailand, and I cant wait to see how much further I can take my results. 10/10 recommend! :)

Going to the gym is something I would do on occasion or whenever I felt like I gained too much weight. It really wasn't a lifestyle habit for me. Plus, I often felt intimidated to lift weights. I didn't want to do something wrong or worse injure myself. And after having 2 babies my body just was not the same. I needed help losing the stubborn baby weight. And with dedication, patience and a lot of hard work I am feeling stronger & energized to keep up with busy kids! I have also learned how to lift weights using proper form. If you are on the fence about personal training, just try it! Make the investment in yourself, you'll be so glad you did & wish you had started sooner.
