It's really nice to have a little shop in a residential neighborhood. They've got very cute gift type stuff, unique selection of cold grab and go drinks, lunches, snacks, and even stuff on tap, though I have obviously never partaken. I like how much of the selection is local, and they've got a really decent dry goods area for last minute cravings, too. Pamela's Baking and Pancake Mix is an example of what I'm talking about. They also make some things internally, it appears. There's a little window into a bakery/kitchen type area where people are hard at work. Love that it's here and the general idea of it. They have some pre made sandwiches from somewhere else that they heat up for you on a panini press which is nice of you're in a hurry. My experience after several visits (happens every time): my sandwiches or burritos are always cold in the middle, no matter what I get. Also, every time I get a coffee they ask if I want room, and I say no. They then leave an inch of room in the cup, even if I get a small, even though we just had that conversation. read more

A holistic general store. Think mom and pop whole foods corner store. With a nice beer selection, cheese variety, and epic ice cream selection, I have to approve! Really had fun in the freezer section: ice cream galore of local nearby brands. Such as lick, parfait, and bluebird! By the pints! The store has cool stuff, and wide various choices. Only thing I couldn't find... but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, couldn't find honest company brand items. I really needed the wipes! But maybe I'm being too picky. I stopped by this evening on my way home because I forgot to buy lemons when I was at the grocery store. It was 90 minutes before they closed and the place was empty. I asked the guy manning the store if he sold lemons. "Uh...maybe? They'd be over there." He motioned with his head, too busy to get off his phone to actually help me. The lemons they had were 2 different unlabeled varieties, both hella old (as in, squishy and drying out), and not priced. I went to check out and they were over a dollar each?! For conventionally grown, old lemons?! That's twice the price than QFC and more than PCC on a good day. I bought them anyway because I didn't want to backtrack to the grocery store, but I'll never stop by C & S again when I need to visit a local marketplace. Hey owners: Either you're a high-end market with customer service and quality to match your prices, or you're a gas station-esque convenience store with piss poor produce and employees who don't give a shit. Super cute, very well-curated little mercantile! I love the mix of pantry staples like Campbell's and Annie's and local, ready-to-eat goods. Not the widest selection (this ain't Safeway) but they manage to have it all - dry goods, produce, wine & beer, even little home decor items and hostess gifts. Love that there's a tap for draft beers and a spot to hang out and enjoy a pint (or glass of wine? I think). I'm just super excited and relieved because if I find myself in need of a mixer or coffee cream, I don't have to trudge up to 15th anymore - I can just pop downstairs! This is a General Store. Seriously, it's one of those places that not only expels the idea that this is the place for the community. I really only head here, because Hello Robin is next door, but don't use that as a comment that it's an afterthought, I almost always go in, when I'm in the neighborhood. It just so happens, that Hello Robin is next door/connected to the place. It's a local general store, beyond the crap that you get at a 7-eleven or convenience store. This place is the real deal General Store, with a TON of local goodies. It means you are paying for Local made goods to, so prices are a little higher. I think if you are needing anything, food, or rather lovely locally made goods, then you should swing by. It's rare to see, but wondering to visit. read more

When we visited, it was very apparent that one person was working the entire store at the dinner hour. We ordered three sandwiches, and two of them took literally a half hour to make because the worker kept ringing out customers. We got tired of waiting, and asked for the third one asap without getting it toasted. The worker put two slices of ham and mayo in the sandwich. That was it. The sandwich was $10. A total waste of time and money. Dear management: hire more people. Or at least train your workers to give people a heads-up when they order, and manage customers so that one group doesn't get totally hosed while s/he takes care of other customers. Sure, the merchandise is interesting, but I don't want to patronize a business with such poor service, for such high prices. read more

This is a great little general store in the north Capitol Hill neighborhood. Since the window display always looks cool we often pop in here, just to check things out whenever we're in the area. In my most recent visit we had an hour-wait for dinner nearby, so decided to pop in here and have some ciders, as there's a bar in the store. It's a small bar, but the beers and ciders on tap are all local and it's a dollar off during happy hour, which was when we came. The only employee there was also our bartender, and was behind the bar/middle area of the store, so as to serve customers checking out at the register and those drinkers at the bar. In addition to the small bar space with stools, there's also a table set up where people can drink and eat at. In addition to the awesome, local products that the store carries they also make sandwiches that you can take out or eat there. I really appreciated that several of the items at the store were from the Pacific Northwest, like Seattle Co. Pickles, Beechers, Uli's Sausage, etc... They also have some unique and modern kitchen accessories and decor and small gifts. They also allow you to bring dogs inside! As soon as our bartender saw our dog sitting by us he walked from behind the counter he was standing at to personally greet her and ask if she wanted a treat. It was much-appreciated and thoughtful. This is a great neighborhood store, and wished there was something like this where I live! read more

Stopped in with the kiddo before checking out the menus at Tallulah's and buying cookies at Hello Robin. Wow - what a great neighborhood concept for a mercantile! A little bit of this, a little bit of that, but an overall great variety. It's similar to the Tom Douglas retail shop down at the Via6 downtown, but with more practical items and locally sourced items. I ended up buying some Hedgehog Toffee from Clyde Hill - which by the way was delicious! Very personable checkout person with a smile worthy of the sunshine outside this afternoon. read more

What a cool little general store! This reminded me of ski trips to small towns when I was a kid. I thought it was so neat to pop into a small store that carried a little bit of everything. Sounds funny but it's true. I was raised in the suburbs of California right when WalMarts and KMarts were where moms and dads did the bulk of their shopping. And for groceries we shopped at another big boring chain. Believe it or not, just a few generations back general stores were where people bought a lot of their odds and ends. And Cone & Steiner is not only a modern, updated, fantastic version of that same business model, it's also insanely useful in its exact location. If you're in the area for ice cream or brunch/dinner/drinks next door, or if you're just passing through and you need a quick item, this is your spot! The windows are lined with mostly locally made gift items and home goods. Stationary, pots and pans, cake decorating kits, and all sorts of cute stuff you'll want to look at. The rest of the space is dedicated to food. Again, lots of the items you'll find are made in the PNW. Jars of pickles, packets of pasta, pints of ice cream, beers, and of course a great little selection of fresh produce. Interesting that at one point in American history it was thought that the next big thing was big box stores, and then suddenly we lost our mom n pop shops and local haunts. But because of demand, because of quality control, and because people want to support local business, spots like this are reemerging and making cities like Seattle cool again. I'm so glad I stopped in. I'd be in heaven if I were fortunate enough to live within walking distance of this store. Here's to hope they build tons more! This place is so charming! Frank & I were in the neighborhood doing some shopping on Saturday, and popped in here in a whim to grab some lunch. I got a made to order sandwich, and he got a pre-made salad. I wouldn't write home about the food, it's nothing super special, but it was exactly what I was looking for: a no frills, tasty, basic sandwich. The staff here is so friendly and welcoming, which really added to the atmosphere here. It's small, but has a couple of counters with a few stools at them, and one longer table (that seats maybe 6). I saw a sign on their chalkboard that they do wine tastings periodically. They just have such a fun and cute selection of gift items and snacks. I love this general store! read more

I'm giving this 5 stars because in my 10 years of living on north capitol hill I've been saying "the one thing this neighborhood is really missing is a bodega" - and BAM! Prayers Answered. Not going to replace your typical large grocery-store in terms of shopping needs, but it's awesome to have somewhere I can get wine, beer, cheese, milk, prepared sandwich or salad within walking distance of my house. If you're from the east coast, you'll recognize this place as a cross between a bodega and a general store. The housewares and gifts are cute in a pinch, but what I'm really happy about is the selection of necessity-type food and drink items. Combined with Talullah's & Hello Robin, and the already existing Fuel, Monsoon, Kingfish and Vios this makes our little corner of Capitol Hill incredibly urban and walkable. It reminds me a little bit of the bodegas we've got out here on the east coast, but mashed up with the hipster kitschy knick-nack stores around Pike & Pine (Retrofit meets Bartell Drugs, if you will). While I didn't buy anything when I popped in, I thoroughly skimmed through both the nifty gifty section as well as the "household rando-junk" area, and found the prices were what I'd expect (a bit more due to convenience). Relatively small selection but it is all extremely thought out and 'local' when possible. The selection includes dry goods, fresh produce, standard grocery fare, old school candy and homewares. We stop by about once a week to pick up growlers of beer and things we forgot to get at the grocery store. They often have beer / wine tastings as well samples of cheeses and cracker's they are currently stocking. For those that want dinner and don't feel like cooking they have several frozen and refrigerated options that are great. The prices are a bit higher than the Safeway down the street, but the quaint environment, lack of stroller crowded isle and being locally owned make up for it! read more

I think it's nice to bring a little grocery store to 19th ave, it has been long needed. This one is charming, good selection of items, the beer taps and tastings are cool, but its a bit too tough on the wallet. I understand them being higher than a chain store, but this is a little much. ex: Pita chips are almost $5, they are $3 4 blocks away. I think the layout is a bit odd as well. They spent a lot of the space on the counter area, but I don't see much going on back there requiring all of the space they have. I'll use it in a pinch or stop in for beer tastings, otherwise I'll get the exercise and head up the hill. read more

Don't come to Cone & Steiner expecting Walmart goods or prices. This is a quaint little general store, proud of what they carry, and a very welcome addition to this corner of Capitol Hill. There's a bit of everything here, which makes it a treat to just browse through. There's chocolate, mugs, stationery, ice cream, produce, and beer (heh, now you know where my priorities lie) among all the other standard food items one expects from a corner store. I am a particular fan of the fact that they can fill growlers of beer for you here. There's even a happy hour for discounted pints or growler fills! To make your decision even easier, you can sip on your beer while munching on a sandwich or pastry (the pies look especially tempting). Voila, you now have a general store that's also a convenient neighborhood hangout spot! What a cool spot. I love the idea of combining errands with some social time, or just a quick bite or drink to myself. I hope they decide to build a third store in Seattle sometime soon! read more

Cute little place with good selection considering the size. Phew, the prices can be high though! I caught myself looking at several things then putting them back when I realized the price. However, I bet if you live in the area, this little upscale mini market has to be a godsend! There aren't a lot of good grocery stores nearby - and I'm not counting the Safeway on 23rd as "good". It's pretty average. Cone and Steiner has some things I've never seen in a Safeway - vintage-y candies and chocolates, interesting bitters for the bar, etc. read more

While my mom was visiting Seattle, we had tickets to see Washington Ensemble Theatre's production of The Hunchback of Seville. We had about forty minutes before curtain on a Saturday night, so without reservations for either Talula or Kingfish, which are both good choices for dinner and drinks, we popped into Cone & Steiner for a beer. The bartender poured us some cold beer, which we could sit and drink on the side of the register bar, sort of fun, and only about four seats. It was nice. My mom couldn't help but browse all of the fun trinkets and vintage/modern hybrid products on the shelves. We ended up also grabbing a baguette and some prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella wheels to nibble while we waited. Before long, the bartender/clerk came over and asked us if we wanted to taste some beers on the house. Not a bad surprise, ok! And by the time we were ready to head to the show, we had already had an entertaining experience. Also worth mentioning, is the knowledge that our server had about local products and beer. Even though WET is moving from their current theatre space on 19th, I will be back here again and bring a friend! read more

This is a general store with specialty food and craft beer but we come here for the Sunrise Tacos. We live in the neighborhood and probably pick up sunrise at least once a week. I've even tried making my own version at home but it's definitely not the same ..even if I think I'm Martha in the kitchen. The white bean taco is my absolute favorite but they all taste really delicious. The tortilla is chewy - pro tip get them heated onsite or take them home and warm them stove top for 2-3 min a side with just a splash of butter. While my husband can eat 2-3 I really only need one to be happy and full. Oh and the green salsa is everything.. It's fresh and lemony and I could easily eat it every day. Yum. read more

A little pricey, and not necessarily practical, but it's a fun place to visit and buy novelty items/snacks/ingredients. The olde timey candy selection is a highlight, as is their beverage selection. The staff is extremely friendly, giving off a positive, neighborhoody vibe. We live nearby so stop in frequently, and have had pleasant exchanges with everyone working there. The counter is a little bit wide, which makes the walkways a bit narrow and causes some uncomfortable traffic problems when several people are in the store. However, we love the "secret" passage from there to Hello Robin, where some fine local kiddie art is on display. read more

They've started selling fresh on-tap kombucha and beers recently which was a nice addition. They could decrease their prices by 20% easily and be more reasonable, but you pay for the convenience I guess. If you want a handmade pressed sandwich prepare for it to take 10-15 minutes. I recently moved across the street from here and I love this place! Great selection of beer and healthy snacks. Also have some sandwiches and I absolutely love their dried bananas and apples. I love that they have beer on tap also. You can shop and have a beer while you do so. They have a cute selection of knick knacks that would be good gifts like candles, cards etc, so this really is a one stop shop. Yay. Will be back many times. read more
