While I always seek out a good hotdog wherever I travel, this is place serves a good dog, but it was really overwhelmed with onions. The two ladies working the counter couldn't be nicer. When I walked in, I noticed a sign on the wall that they only accept cash, so I only ordered 2 dogs as I wasn't carrying but $6.00 on me. When served, I asked how much the dogs were, the waitress said $5.40, so I thought, I'm still in the green! Boy, was I wrong when I got the bill for $10.80! I managed to scrounge another $2.00 from my cars change tray, but I was still short $2.80. Fortunately, the waitress on the register covered me for the difference ( these folks couldn't be nicer in this situation). I can't remember a more expensive dog, albeit, maybe in an airport or a baseball stadium, but Shamokin PA! Go for the hospitality, but bring your CASH! read more

Passing through coal country. Super nice people. Wasn't thrilled about the hot dog. A bit undercooked for me. It was dense and mild and skinless. I don't know the brand but it reminded me of a Hatfield. Not pictured was a burger with cooked onions piled high which was good. read more

Billy Joel serenaded us all about how hard it was living there in Allentown after they'd taken all the coal from the ground way back in '82. With respect to the Piano Man, if he thought things were tough up there back then, he'd be at a loss for words for what has happened to Shamokin in the three decades since. My mom grew up in Shamokin, and I have very VERY fond memories of staying at my grandparents up there during the summers throughout the 80s. So it was not with a small amount of nostalgia that I detoured through Northumberland County with my boys on the way home from Knoebels on our most recent visit. The whole town is just a shadow of what it once was, and Independence Street is no exception. With that said, there shining like a faded, patinated beacon from the past is that old neon Coney Island Lunch sign. Inside was almost exactly as I remembered, maybe a little more worn, but the big details remained the same. A handful of tables and the original wooden telephone booth in the back (although the payphone itself is long gone) and a long row of seats at the counter right past the grill up in the front window where the three of us saddled up for lunch. No need for menus, the choices are straight forward: hot dogs or burgers. You can have onions or chili on either, and perhaps a bag of chips if you're feeling spendy. My youngest went for a burger, while my oldest and I each went for "one up and one down," my dog with chili, and of course with plenty of onions on both. The food was as straightforward and delicious as I remembered. It sure isn't gourmet, but there's a flavor that comes off of a grill that's been seasoned with over a century of use that's impossible to replicate. After a filling lunch and nice conversation with both the cook and server about years gone by, we were back on the road. $30 for lunch and drinks for three isn't cheap, but it isn't expensive either, and it's worth every penny for the experience. Here's to hoping the folks at Coney Island keep that bright neon beacon shining for years to come. read more

I would recommend if you are looking for OLD SCHOOL hot dogs or burgers and thrive on weirdness - No frills here - heck they don't have ice! Grilled onions, mustard and chili are the only toppings. Service is great. However, the food is horribly expensive for what you get. Extremely limited menu. Burgers and hotdogs, chips, and soda are about it. I was disappointed not only with the price of 2 cheeseburgers all the way, and two hotdogs all the way cost me $23.00. Burgers and hotdogs are overcooked and very small. Sauce is very salty as well. There is nothing healthy in regard to the food, and quality is horrible. Burger King and McDonald's have better quality and price for a cheeseburger. read more

Pure nostalgia with this restaurant being in business 104 years this year (2022) WOW!! Not many can say they've been to a diner with this much history. They keep things simple cooking hamburgers, hotdogs and onions in the window grill. They have their special chili sauce waiting for you!! They have old fashioned bottles of soda and local chips to enjoy with your meal. I think they have kept most everything in there original. Truly a step back in time! Check out the high ceilings, old bar and decorations. It's a great place to gather with friends or read the newspaper or your phone. They just serve hotdogs and hamburgers with various toppings, along with drinks. This isn't a place to be a foodie or see a chef's menu. This is simple food for simple tastes or just some nostalgia. It's no wonder this place has been in business since 1918, because their food is legit! My family was from Shamokin and, after only having visited the area as a baby, I have been in the area twice in the last year. I wasn't wise to this place the first time and after trying it a few weeks ago I am kicking myself for not checking it out on my first trip, as an adult, in September. On my recent trip, we were in town for only two days and went there twice! The food is fast, reasonably priced and really really good. I live in STL and was really excited to drink birch beer, which was a family favorite that I haven't had since I was a kid. The owner, Coney Bill as I learned from the local paper, seems like a really interesting, awesome guy. He even asked about and complimented my Flaming Lips tattoo on our first trip, which I thought was super cool. This is an old established plaplacece that I'm sure has plenty of regulars, but we were welcomed as though we had been coming there for years. Also, the dining area was like stepping back in time, but in the best possible way in my opinion. I hope they never change it. I had the burger with everything the first day and the dog with everything the second day and was very satisfied with both. It's probably a good thing I don't live in the area or I might eat there for every meal! I can't wait to visit this place again if/when I am in town again. This place is nothing to rave about. We saw this place on the tv show Diners, Drive ins and Dives so we thought we would check it out. The food is very bland. The onions nor the chilli sauce was good. The burger is a sliver of meat. They did not have the regular cola soda just the diet so I was forced to drink ginger ale and my husband went for the blue birch beer since he likes birch beer, but didn't like it either. We were very disappointed. We were also never asked how was the food. Sorry, but we do NOT recommend this spot! read more

I love this place. Its nestled in the town of Shamokin PA. My great grandparents ate here back in the day, and so did my grandfather.. and now we enjoy Coneys here! This place has always been a family favorite. When we come back to Shamokin this is our first stop! Great people, good food, and this place definitely takes you back in time. Stopped in last night because Tony's in Girardville was closed and Coney Island had good reviews on here as well as the coal region burger tour I ordered a burger with everything and two dogs with everything. Terrible burger a frozen patty, overcooked on a generic bun, mustard with an ok chili sauce and fried onion nothing special. The dogs were below average the chili is meh, the raw onion tasted like it had been sitting out for a week. Next stops will be Coney Island in MC and Pottsville hopefully they do not disappoint like Coney Island Shamokin did. read more

Traveling for work in what I perceive as the middle of nowhere,I come across this place that is a slice right out of 1950's Mayberry memorable Americana. Great Hot dogs and staff.
