Visited here Friday, 3/14/25, and what an absolute gem of a place! From the moment I walked in and was greeted, to being seated, pleasant all around. The decor is clean and fresh. I did not know this place existed! Oh my goodness, the food is delicious! You have to come in and try it. One of the most cleanest, and largest restaurants in the downtown Gainesville Square. They offer brunch on Mondays when most restaurants are closed in the area. I wish I would have taken pictures of the seafood ceviche, and the hearts of palm ceviche. Good amount to share with your table friends. Next time I'll order the seafood ceviche with a side order of rice as my entrée. We also had the braised, sliced sirloin steak, and the. Enchiladas Verdes, which is the braised chicken with salsa Verde cream. It was very delicious! The beverages I shouldn't forget were also memorable. The Consuelo Mexican Cuisine is apparantly a very favorite spot as we walked in just before the end of happy hour. The restaurant was in the process of getting tables ready for big parties. We had to wait and were offered a high table with very high seats right under a loud cha cha musical delight. We asked for a better location, but this too was going to be a problem as guests of the big parties are starting to claim their tables. Tight sitting and more than once, I apologized for getting bumped or being bumped. But there is a silver lining, and her name is Natalia. She was friendly, knew the menu, and was attentive to our needs as a glass of water accidently got knocked over. The orders came, and we had Queso Fundido with a side of extra tortillas to start. The Huarache Vegano was the right vegan plate, and the De LA Esquina three tacos with Olla style beans was a hit. Trio Enchiladas was a good choice to savor the three main flavors of corn tortilla wrapped shredded chicken; my fave was the Mole, then the green spicy tomatilla Verde and then the light red tomato base salsa. Our server was apologetic for not having the iconic Flan or Churro desserts. Consuelo became a very busy and celebratory place. This is the real deal. Food and drinks are amazing. As an example, you will not find them using a mix for their Margaritas. This is not a Taco Bell experience or even your typical Mexican sit-down restaurant. Interestingly, the prices are fair and not excessive. Recently attended a group event at Consuelo. We were set up towards the back. This was a Friday night and the restaurant was alive - packed out. Great feel. From the first moments we received our guacamole and chips, I knew we were in for a treat. The service was attentive and professional. Our table ordered the Lengua (beef tongue) tacos, Huarache and Carne En Su Jugo. All outstanding! I would order these all again or recommend to a friend. We devoured this feast. On the way out, we received multiple "thank yous" from staff and even a hug! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. What an outstanding experience. I don't give many 5 star reviews. This is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to! The food and drinks were excellent. Our server was great and professional. We had a skinny margarita and the cucumber mojito. Both were wonderful and not too sweet. The chips and trio of salsas started us off and then we ordered the combo for two with steak, shrimp and chicken flavored with peppers and a sauce that was perfect. Excellent first time at Consuelo Friday evening. They were busy so I do recommend making a reservation if you can. The waiting area has a trendy ambiance. Love the light fixtures throughout the restaurant but it seems the walls where the tables are set could use some large pieces of art or murals or as a tradeoff, more rugs could be placed to give the whole restaurant the same ambiance as the waiting area! Just a suggestion. Our server was nice and attentive enough. We had the Rosemary Blush, Consuelo Margarita and Tequila Old Fashioned cocktails. All tasty and most definitely the best quality cocktails in Gainesville. We had the Empanada and Ceviche appetizers. Both were fresh and delicious. For entree's we had the Consuelo Mole and I forget what it's called but the steak flatbread type of entree. Both were small portions, but very flavorful. Every new business has it's kinks to work out and Consuelo's may be the staff being too attentive, as we had several folks come try to clear our plates while we were still enjoying our food. We had an amazing experience at Consuelo! The whole staff was friendly, and Nancy our server was fantastic -- gave great recommendations, checked in often, and was fun to talk to, period! I have been dreaming of the perfectly crispy, salty tortilla chips. The tacos, queso fundido, and ceviche were all excellent -- and well-portioned for tapas/antojitos. The margarita flight was a good call, too - the hibiscus was the favorite, and we ordered extra candied ginger... The decor was upscale but the service and food made it feel homey. Great music too. Drink menu: 10/10 this is the Gainesville spot for cocktails and the bar is just really modern and upscale. So many types of tequilas and mezcals and just a super creative and innovative menu using cool ingredient combinations. Menu: 10/10 for choices- wide range of everything even for vegetarians and vegans. Not common at all in Gainesville so YAY! Food: 5/10 not so great. Poorly plated without any eye appeal and the flavors were just not there. The queso fundido was super grainy and soaked in (I think butter or oil- not sure), served with a tiny amount of salsa, and was overall flavorless. We ordered el Vegano and Huarache. El vegano was overcooked unseasoned vegetables in greasy flavorless sauce with overcooked rice. Huarache was mediocre at best and didn't come out looking too visually appetizing either. The corn tortilla it was on was more like a piece of publix flatbread with no flavor. Ambiance/Service: 5/10 - I hate seeing flies in a restaurant. Black flies and those weird little drain flies. The last thing I want to do is swat flies away while eating. Pet peeve- if I give you my silverware when you take the appetizer, it's bc I want a new fork for my entree- do not take my fork off my dirty plate and put it down on the table- I know it's snobbyAF and I get it but just don't. As we were finishing our entrees, a random employee came and asked for 2 of our chairs- meanwhile there were probably 40+ empty chairs all around the room (why bother us when literally there are chairs everywhere, the place is empty, and we are finishing our food). It was just awkward and unnecessary. Weird way to review this place BUT hear me out: if it wants to be classy/upscale Mexican food, it has a shot, but they need to amp up flavor, visual presentation, and seriously nail the service component of upscale because it misses the mark on all these factors. read more

Went to Consuelo for the Day of the Dead and all the servers were dressed up in costume. The ambience of the scene was amazing. The atmosphere delightful. The service was fantastic. Loved the drinks. By the time we left, the restaurant was packed. We ordered the guacamole. I liked it but had a hard time getting it on the chips and had to use a utensil. The chips were homemade. I ordered the shrimp tacos grilled and my husband had the enchiladas Rojas which he was not very impressed with. Overall, a nice experience. The recently celebrated their first anniversary. We went in recently and have to agree with one reviewer on flavor or lack thereof. Before I go there, the room itself is beautiful. I really thought the almost living room like waiting area was a great idea and very eye appealing. We sat at the bar and service typically when seated at the bar and in this case was very attentive. Drinks were spot on and they had plenty of options. We were there on a Saturday night so it was a full house which was great to see. Having not been there, the server at the bar explained that these were old world recipes, and in looking at the menu, there were many unique takes on dishes that I had never seen before. We will give it another try but all of our food beginning with the guacamole as well as our entrees were under seasoned. In fact, the guacamole tasted like it had no seasoning and we requested hot sauces and salt to kick it up a bit. The entrees were similar and not as tasty as I thought they would be after reading the description in the menu. Price point matches the upscale room and it's place off the square but grand mom's recipes need some work. Salt and other spices would be a good start. read more

Such an amazing addition to the Downtown Gainesville area. The authentic Mexican dishes combined with the atmosphere and once cocktails make Consuelo a new staple. I was absolutely floored by the Pozole Verde and Mole because of the complexity in flavor. I'm not sure how this place has such a high rating, other than maybe Gainesville just doesn't have much to compare to. Our food was mediocre at best. We got the ceviche and aguachile de camarón trio appetizer. The hearts of palm "ceviche" is essentially a little veggie salad. It's an attempt at inclusivity for vegans, but very much not worth the money for meat eaters. The actual mahi mahi ceviche and the shrimp appetizer were good, but I've had ceviche that I loved. This was just missing something for me. I got the pollo en mole verde, and my husband got carne en su jugo. My chicken quarter was cooked well - moist and falling off the bone. The rice was delicious. The mole just... Wasn't what I was expecting in terms of flavor. I tried my husband's salsa verde, which was a little sweet, but it was good. I probably would have been happier with the enchiladas verdes. My husband's "soup" was fine. Didn't feel that either meal was worth $20+ for flavor or portion. The 3 dessert empanadas were small and extremely flat. Not what my husband expected at all lol. Overall, just very underwhelming for $75 + tip meal. I will say that our server was very nice though, so 5 stars for her. Gainesville water tastes like cleaning solution though. BYOW lol. read more

First time experience at this new addition to downtown Gainesville. The ambience is good and decor tasteful. Due to the high ceilings and hammered tin it is a little loud,but not overwhelming. The hostess was very pleasant and we were seated quickly ( we had a reservation!). We ordered an appetizer of guacamole and a spicey paloma drink. Food was quick to the table but bar service was a little slow.Our waitress was helpful, our food, flautas and Chile relleno presented with perfect timing. Both dishes well prepared although the flautas could benefit from some salsa Verde. Portions were average. With tip for two, the bill was right at $100 ,which is a little pricey but overall an enjoyable experience and we will definitely go back. read more
