We love coming here! My daughter is 7 and learning the piano. We started with the Music Discovery class and were able to sample different instruments like the drums, ukulele and piano. Before reading this, scroll down and see how many manufactured five-star reviews there are on this particular business. I find this extremely suspect and deserving of Investigation which I intend on doing. Please see image of four "not recommended" reviews I found at the bottom of this page and learn more about this business owner... [MY REVIEW] Where do I start? I had to make four trips to this place regarding strings. The first time I went, I needed one string for my 12 string guitar wich was missing the G string. When I got to the shop, I made the mistake of saying "E" string. They charged me two dollars on my first visit but swapped out the E string for a G string, on my second visit, (but the guy that handed it to me didn't seem sure if it was an exact correct gauge). I got home and it immediately snapped, so I drove down a third time to just pick up a set of 12 strings in the packaging but, (and this is where I probably should have gone to Guitar Center in Concord). Their collection of strings was sparse, at best and the gauge I wanted wasn't in stock, so the guy pulled the "Extra Light" off the peg and I said, "No, I need Mediums". He pulled the only other set of strings and said they were Mediums. (THEY WEREN'T, they were LIGHT). I didn't realize this until I was tuning the thin G string and guess what - it snapped and hit me in the wrist. Infuriated, I drove down a FOURTH time. I was fuming not only because the string failed, but because I've wasted more gas and a total of 18 bucks on strings that weren't the brand I wanted to get and were the wrong freekin' gauge! They are more interested in making a sale, at the cost of frustration of their customers. I say "You're not gonna' like this" - I plop the half used pack of strings down, and state that the damn G string snapped and that I want my money back. He hurries around the counter, I unzipped my guitar case and before It's fully open, he tears it out of the case, (past the unopened zipper opening, scratching the finish in the process), saying "Oh, don't be like that", runs to the back room saying "Let me fix this, let me fix this" AFTER I said, "I want my money back". I couldn't get a word in edgewise because he interrupted me three times, (a serious no-no with me), I lost all respect for him at that point. He rushed back out and asked where the pegs were and I said, tersely and through gritted teeth, "...on my BENCH". Before I could finish my sentence of "Look, man, just give me my guitar back", he rushed around the counter to fetch a set of pegs, (those things you put the string behind at the bridge), quickly waving it at me, (I didn't see it), stating that they were the same color, (you guessed it...they weren't). So there I was left to seethe in his cold-ass showroom. All I wanted was my money back or a simple "we don't do returns on strings", all I knew is that I wanted to leave because, it was actually colder INSIDE his showroom than it was OUTSIDE! IT WAS 50 DEGREES OUTSIDE! During the half hour it took for him to install six strings of a LIGHTER gauge of freezing my ass off in that place, I was forced to listen to him and his coworker having a casual conversation about who played for which famous performer and on what guitar, blah blah blah blah blah...GAAAH!!! When he was done, he stiff-armed the guitar at me, pointed to a drummer's thrown across from the counter and told me to try it out. reluctantly, I did two chords, and stood back up to put the guitar back in the case. That's when I noticed that three of the four missing pegs he replaced had black dots on the end. I'm OCD and this was enough to set me brain on fire. I just clammed up and left in silence but not before I commented on how freakin' cold it was in that showroom. I asked if he had a heater in that place and he said "yes, we have plenty of heaters". "We are men of action; Lies do not become us..." should have leapt from my lips, but instead I opted for silence and made a bee line for the door. I had to get my frozen ass out of that place and in to a warm car. When I got home, and pulled the guitar out of the case, I unwound the whole set and threw it away along with the replacement pegs, one of which was slightly narrower than the rest...if I had strummed it with a pick, it would have shot out across the room and strings would have broken, anyway. Life is too short to buy crappy strings at a sub par music store. If you know what kind of strings you like to buy, order them online or travel to a well reputed store who caries a wide selection...unlike Consumer Music's paltry and pathetic selection of strings... I'm giving this place an F+ (the "plus" for the Herculean lack of effort in providing proper customer service...by that, I mean they need to LISTEN to their customers when things go wrong and NOT assume they can FIX a problem with... (what's the metaphor I'm looking for?) Applying a used band-aid on a sucking chest wound. read more

What a relief, to move to Vallejo and discover a *real* music store! Three of the most important indie musical instrument stores in Oakland and Berkeley were shuttered over the past year or two and I just figured I was going to have to resolve myself to Guitar Center and online stores. I'm so glad Consumer Music is here. Great selection of supplies, and very helpful. Found what I needed. Enjoyed a good conversation with Brad, who walked me around the store and pointed out the practice rooms, which were lively with people taking lessons and practicing. That's something I especially appreciate is their focus on community. I'm eager to participate in next month's monthly open mic -- a friend says it's a good vibe, with musicians who are welcoming and supportive. This place is the best! I needed my guitar fixed for a gig in two days--man was I concerned. Brad and his team did the install in one day, replaced the pickup, add new strings, tuned it up--the guitar plays like new! Consumer Music store and studio feel like a home to me now! I've visited several guitar centers and sure it's a music experience so if's cool and all but it has never felt as special and personalized like it did in Consumer Music! Bret is an incredibly knowledgeable person and he did an amazing job making my guitar sound and feel good for my tiny hands! TLDR: store associates lacked transparency and knowledge about a violin I was trying to purchase. Store owner was kind, but negligent. Walked away with an Amazon Violin. I won't be coming back and I'm disappointed by fellow musicians. They said they would call us back within a week each time we called. They called back after we called three times, but I t took us marching in there in person after 7 weeks to get any actual help. Was super excited to support a local music store in efforts to pick up an old hobby. Decided to go here because it was in my hometown and we were kindly greeted by the owner, associates, and some other folks. We stayed and talked for an hour or two before settling on a violin. I trusted that after spending a couple hours chatting, the associates would not have sold me a product that was clearly not what we needed. We were sold a 1/2 size violin for a full grown adult. Not a huge issue, we figured it's okay it was a mistake. So we called to ask for help with an exchange or refund 3 times over the course of 7 weeks. I wanted to support the shop and receive an exchange until our last interaction. The resolution: Consumer Music ended up taking back the 1/2 size violin and refunding us $90/200 spent on what is an Amazon brand violin. If I wanted a violin from Amazon, I would've gotten that myself. Further more, the owner was irritated when we asked for this adjustment as they were saying they would only refund 60/200. The violin on Amazon is valued at 110 and they were trying to sell it to us for 140. Considering this process took almost 2 months to resolve and the price proposed was 30$ over an Amazon listing price was disappointing. I'm sure many people have a great experience with this place and I'm sad to say I am definitely not one of them. The people seem super kind and knowledgeable about music- I guess just not with violins. read more

Browsed around for amps and the young employee was nice enough to set up one for my son to try I guess my son was too excited about the purchase he forgot the charger for the amp at the register. TL:DR - Great music store. Bring your guitars here! My washburn rover (travel guitar) needed some help. I bought it a LOT of years ago (I think from Best Buy) and it never had a proper set up. I think I changed the strings a few times - but that was the extent of it. It was always hard to play. But, until recently I just assumed it was my lack of skill. This time around I somehow managed to figure out about intonation. Which lead me to finding out that basically every note other than the open strings were off by a bit. Soooo... I brought it into Consumer Muic (also known as the "guitar whoopie parlor and spa") and had a professional do magic. He lowered the bridge "a lot.. I mean, it was.. I lowered it.. I took off A LOT" - he also straightened the neck, replaced the strings, cleaned the tuners, and shined it up a bit. It plays SO much easier now. Where there used to be a large gap there is now room for a thick piece of paper between the strings and frets. There is no buzzing. And the notes, especially the high E, ring It went from one of my least playable cheap guitars to possibly my most playable. Totally worth the time and money. Wish I'd done it a long time ago. read more

Our DJ had a bad fall and cancelled the day before my Mom's Funeral Wake (Reception). Per Brad, we could rent "everything we needed" for presentations, slideshow, and of course, music. The entire equipment was picked up w/in an hour and we were told to return the equipment by 5pm the following day. Brad was contacted that we would be involved with my Mother's funeral mass and burial during that time. He was very understanding and agreed to a more convenient return time and day. My family was able to "fully embrace" the entire events using all the equipment by Consumer Music. My family and I will continue to patronize Consumer music in all our audio-visual music events. He knew my daughters lesson was the next day and so he expedited the repair at no extra charge. I don't recommend special ordering anything...went in to get a set of baby safe bongos because my 6 month old daughter loves banging things. The owner recommended a company's and put the special order in for us. He said it usually takes 4 days. After not hearing anything a week later, I called. The worker said the bongos were "coming from a different warehouse" and should hopefully be in the following Thursday. Waited again and still nothing. I went into the store 2 weeks after purchasing and asked for a refund. Again the owner was very polite and they gave me the refund. He said, "I'll give you the refund and give you a call when the bongos come in anyway," which I took to mean I was getting the bongos anyway to make up for the inconvenience...awesome. Well, I get the call saying the bongos came in and when I went to get them, and ask if I'm good, the worker says, "You have to pay for them still." When I say "I thought I was getting them anyway because he was trying to keep good customer relations," the worker responds with, "What, you thought you were getting them for free?" Fine, my mistake if I misunderstood. The owner wasn't there to clarify. But what's even better: the bongos were $20 cheaper than the ones I had ordered that weren't coming in. So, not only did I receive no follow up from them when my order was taking longer than expected, if I hadn't gone in to ask for a refund, they would have been making a killer profit off of me. read more

This is a gem of a local music store. Good selection. Great service. Cool studio space to record and get lessons. I can't recommend it enough. This is a local establishment that is worth supporting and in return they support you. My wife got a good deal on a special instrument for my birthday. Months later I had a problem and Brad couldn't have been more helpful in getting the instrument back in my hands. He even stayed open a bit later than usual so I could get the instrument back the same day I dropped it off. What a pro, and a nice guy!
