I am a student in Janicka Arthur's adult ballet class at CBD. She really cares about her adult students, unlike most or all teachers Who's classes I have attended in the past. She cares about our development and treats each of us like a professional dancer. Her approach to training adults new to dance is amazing and kind. She understands our individual obstacles that come with age or accidents, and still believes we can do it. Janicka is an inspiration and I am so lucky to have found her and her program! If you are considering taking classes with Janicka, I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed, and you will see results. Don't be mistaken, she makes her students work VERY HARD! The Staff and Instructors are so wonderful! They take the time to work with each student and provide helpful and constructive critiques. This studio truly has classes for EVERYONE! Even if you've never stepped foot in a dance studio before, then offer Basics Series for Ballet, Tap, and even Folklorico. Temperature checks and masks are required, and the staff is always making sure the studios are cleaned in between classes. It is so nice to be in a studio dancing while also feeling safe. Plus they have plenty of online options if you're not ready to go back to in person yet! 10/10 Recommend! read more

I took the Ballet I Series for adults with Janika and it was a great experience. I was worried going into the class because I had no prior experience in ballet (or any type of dance for that matter). Janika made it really easy to feel comfortable and learn. She's a great teacher, but she is also very hard, so be prepared to work! You will absolutely get your money's worth. And, if you put some time into practicing and make an effort, you will be impressed with the improvements you will make. I will be taking the Ballet II Series for adults with Janika and am really looking forward to it! I also feel like the studio is really clean, and the gals at the front are very friendly. They're willing to help answer any questions you have about classes, prices, make-up classes, etc. I would absolutely reccommend Contemporary Ballet Dallas to any adults interested in ballet classes. read more

I am conflicted here. I have had a good and a horrifying experience at CBD. I haven't had a ballet class in over 8 years, so as an adult taking ballet again, I was nervous. I took a tap, jazz, and a beginner ballet class. They all were marvelous! There was a wide range of levels in each class. The Horrifying experience came when I had taken a few beginner classes and felt comfortable in my ability to take a beginner/intermediate class. I am a very experienced dancer and have taken years of ballet. I am 30+ years old and my body doesn't keep up with my mind on complex things like double frappes. SO.... feeling very intimidated, I still gave the class my all. Kept up very well except some bad technique habits that I have always had. The instructor then called me out and asked if I needed to go over the combo again. He then gave a long winded speech saying "if you want to do ballet as exercise, maybe you should try pilates, barre, or yoga" I WAS MORTIFIED AND APPAULED AND have never come back again. I have taken over 20 classes here. That brought it to a hault. Definitely choose your classes wisely here. Dance snob culture is real. read more

I've been attending adult classes at CBD for about a month now. Their prices are very reasonable ($85 for an 8-week Ballet Basics class, for instance), and there's a decent selection of classes for adults, including both technique-type classes (ballet, jazz, modern, etc) and more workout-focused classes. And there are also a variety of teaching styles, so you can find a teacher that suits you. I'm not your typical slender, athletic ballet dancer, so I was initially nervous that I would be snubbed or feel like an outcast, but I've always felt welcome and supported in the beginner and workout classes (haven't taken any intermediate/advanced classes yet). I hope they will continue to expand their options in the evening/weekend time slots. Currently, some classes are only offered before 6 pm or only once during the week, which means that I can't ever make it to those classes. But since they are mainly a dance school (rather than a fitness studio/gym), this will probably always be a struggle. Be aware that the "amenities" are very basic -- a small dressing room with bathrooms, no showers, no lockers. The dressing room is shared between adults and child students, so I always come dressed for class, because I don't feel like I can count on having someplace private-ish to change. Overall, I look forward to going to my ballet/barre classes every week, and my legs are getting so strong! read more

If you are an adult who wants to start or re-start ballet, this is the place to be. I started taking ballet classes here having had no prior ballet experience. I've also taken beg/int contemporary, and that class is a ton of fun, but I'm usually in ballet class. There are a handful of main things that contribute to how much I adore this place and why I recommend it to others. 1. Teachers often, if not always, personally introduce themselves to new students and make every attempt (usually successfully) to remember their names. If you let them know your experience or confidence level, they'll help you find a good place to stand at the barre to follow people and the other adults will happily accommodate you. 2. I don't think I've ever had a class where I felt like the teacher was not fully attentive to the students. Corrections are given throughout class. If you show that you care about making progress, they will help you get there. Finding teachers who really invest in adult beginners is something to treasure. 3. The other adults are welcoming. 4. They offer student pricing, which is a big plus for me. 5. Floors are great! The marley flooring is smooth and flat, with no ragged tape on top to trip you up. I've been to studios where classes cost more and the floor hasn't been anywhere near as nice. read more

Was looking for an alternative to my normal yoga routine and decided to take up ballet at this nearby studio. Five months later, after both ballet beginner series 1 & 2, I'm still in love. Janicka and Whitney are both fantastic instructors looking to make the most of your time, while also having fun (important for a self-depracating adult taking beginner ballet). Only thing taking away a star from my review would be the cleanliness of the studio. Bathrooms are always out of order and it's never fun to walk out with dusty clothes and ballet slippers. BUT, I don't know of many other cities that offer adult classes this great so I can't complain. Highly recommend! read more

This studio has an awesome adult class schedule with quality instruction. The school makes it easy for people with a busy schedule as they offer multiple time slots throughout the week. Be very careful if you buy one to keep track of your card expiration dates and plan your classes ahead. Be very careful when you purchase anything from them. My boyfriend bought me a 20 class pass for my birthday and the staff assured him that they would not hold the passes to an expiration date. I had previously bought myself 20 classes and as I travel for work it took me a while to work through my classes. When I went to use the 20 classes he bought for me they had expired. (2.5 months later I believe). The studio refused to work with us as and went back on their assurance that the classes would not expire. We lost all 20 classes and obviously the money that paid for them. Unfortunately for us we did not have this in writing. Shady business practice to go back on your word, especially for a returning customer. Needless to say, they've lost my future business. read more

Our kid to pre-ballet. in about 6 month she had a two / three times where she would have the same teacher. It was always more often a different sub every time. All of the teachers seemed good, but its hard to have continuity when its a different teacher every time. They never seemed to be in tune at all w/ kids personality . If one as a parent would mention anything they didn't seem to care much. Our kids group couldn't learn the routine for the end of year recital, due to the inconsistency of the teacher, which in one occasion didn't even know the song to be dance to. Eventually i emailed the director about the lack of professionalism observed, and never got a response back, not a single acknowledgement. Recital was a ok. but everything was nickeled and dimed. 2 months later we never received our pictured that were paid for. Personally , I am glad i didn't have any expectation about our kids group as the entire group didn't know their routine . read more

I was really excited about taking the Basics beginner ballet series. It is something that I had always wanted to do but always had people in my ear telling me that I couldn't. I read the reviews and had decided that this would be the perfect class and location for me and that it was time to stop listening to others tell me I couldn't. Even though it was the basics class I was the only student with no ballet experience. It was intimidating but I was already there and just rolled with it. Unfortunately I didn't get the same experience that other reviewers had. The instructor called me out and put me on the spot at one point and made me totally uncomfortable. And I'm not talking about corrections to my form but announcing that I did something wrong and then asking what my name was. Not sure why the whole class needed to know the name of the person she was correcting. I will say it was a great workout. I was sore that day for sure. At the end of class everyone says bye to the instructor individually before they leave. I kept hearing the instructor tell people they did a great job but when it was my turn I got handed a card and told goodnight. I don't know how to explain it but I definitely felt like I was in the wrong place and that I didn't belong. I just wish that the instructor would have been more encouraging. Especially since she knew that I never took ballet before and letting her know why I was coming to the class. Unfortunately I don't think I will ever go back because I really was made to feel that uncomfortable. Which is sad because I was so excited. read more

My daughter took ballet here before going somewhere else. I actually really loved her teacher, as a person, but not a whole lot of actual teaching seemed to be going on there. She also did not seem to be very tuned into my daughter, who was very shy. The owner was never very pleasant to be around, however, and I heard the same from other parents... She is basically a chill wind. I wanted to like this place because it was close to our home, but in the end, it was not a pleasant place to be, and we did not feel comfortable there. read more

I am used to classes taught to real ballet class music (not contemporary Ipod music), often with a pianist, and as I am from a very large metropolitan area, even the drop in advanced classes are much higher caliber. read more
