A Twisted Christmas Carol; Review Newport Playhouse Dec 1,…read more2025 Complicated. Not the play but the fact I and others, enjoying 3 days in Newport RI in a tour group, were basically a captive audience. "Dinner and a show" is how our itinerary put it. We ate a decent meal in the dining area and then all traipsed upstairs into this cozy little theatre. The stage was more than a proscenium because it projected out, bringing the actors into a more intimate relationship to the audience. (Just a note here: The seats were comfortable but the seat in front of you - seat pitch - was abysmally close. After 3/4 of an hour my knees began to hurt badly.) The play is a loose take on Dickens' Christmas Carol, with a 'Christmas past/Christmas present/Christmas future' structure. All action takes place in a small barbecue pub in west Texas. The proprietor (John Brennan), a grossly insensitive husband to his partner wife (Cass Caduto), is concerned for his business which is sliding downhill. Advice and antics from his live-in customer (Kol Daniel Cross) are scant help. The action unfolds with the help of a former employee (Rosa Nguyen) and the proprietor's former business partner (Matt Goldstein) who stole his barbecue sauce recipe years ago and has profited from it. Oh yes, that business partner is also the wife's former romantic partner, uh-oh. I could not find the author's name for this play. I suspect it was locally written by one or another of the actors or production staff. Maybe it was like a "Oh, we gotta put something together for our Christmas show" collaboration. The script produced a few jarring moments, as when the proprietor who has been in an accident and comatose in the hospital being visited by Christmas ghosts suddenly returns in full health. But the actors clearly enjoyed putting this on. The audience laughed and I think had fun watching although a few may not have had much experience with live performances. At the conclusion they started to leave and were surprised when the actors came out for a curtain-call bow. Ouch!

Also they should lighten up the colors inside the black is too dark. I am not criticizing I want the playhouse to succeed and since they are making changes it is just suggestion. The Cabaret was awesome funny. No tell motel was a fun play the actors were excellent but the play could have bee shorter.

We got a box of Crab Rangoons from Ching Tao down the street, and sat in the first row nibbling away. The show is a fast paced 80 minute romp with no intermission. The troupe takes suggestions from the audience for the skits, and hilarity ensues. If you are celebrating a special occasion, they may even call you up from the audience for a personalized skit of your own! The Bit Players excel particularly in their song-prov sketches, I have been coming to these shows for years and the ability to make up verses on the fly never fails to impress. JT and Danny stole the show the night we went with their Shakespearean sketch about Chuck E Cheese.. still laughing over some of the great lines! I would recommend this night out to folks ages 14+, as the humor skews to a PG-13-ish range. That being said, if you're looking for a fun and different activity, the Bit Players is worth a visit!

I am so grateful that we've been involved in the program, starting when she was a baby and growing up over the years - we highly recommend for families with young children!

"Our goal is to nurture your child's (and family's!) natural enthusiasm and skills for music and…read moremovement." Mister Christopher is a natural with children. The classes that he holds are simple and easy to do for children of all ages. The classes concentrate on children younger than five but includes family members so that interaction is intimate and comfortable within his circle of music. He provides simple musical instruments for the children and accompanies on guitar encouraging children and adults to move, sing and play. The more that you interact with him the better the class gets. He teaches not only music but basic social skills such as sharing, cleaning up after yourself, politeness, and trust. The classes are such that you can attend one and feel included but people are encouraged to come back repeatedly and some families have been taking their kids there over and over again. It's a play group especially for kids to relax, have fun, spend quality time with their parents, or any family member. There are two locations where the classes meet. A Class location in PORTSMOUTH, RI at Elite Academy (formerly known as "Steppin Out Studios") 35 Dyer St. (off of Sprague St.) and A Class location in NEWPORT, RI at St. Paul's Methodist Church - 12 Marlborough St. (downtown Newport) I've taken my niece to the second location a few times. She's a special needs child that has a difficult time socializing. She really responds to Mister Christopher (that is what he has the children call him in class). He is very patient with all the children even kids that other parents may not know how to handle. I have a lot of respect for him as he has a CD of his own songs so you can practice dancing and singing at home with your kids. He also has the kids take home simple homework. Nothing too strenuous but an excellent way to have your children grow up with the expectation that you take work in your classroom and apply it at home. I have to add that when I first attended class with my niece I was a skeptical of Mister Christopher's methods. The classes seemed very childish. After attending it again and paying attention to his process and watching the other kids and my niece's reaction I was really impressed with him and the classes. He's very polite, engaging and easy to talk to. The class is suppose to be child like to capture your child's interest and make them comfortable so they can follow directions. When you first come to any class you and your child take off your shoes. So wear socks. Be prepared to pick your child up if they are very shy and have them dance with you if they can't (or won't) dance by themselves. Ask questions if you don't understand why Mister Christopher is doing something or if you can't hear. It can get noisy with the instruments at times but it's not all banging on drums or tambourines. Most of all relax and let Mister Christopher guide you through the class. Your child will really benefit from this class and Mister Christopher's attitude.

It turned out to be the "new" owner, Larry. (New because he became the owner 10 years ago, and Luca Music has been around since I used to shop at Almacs... ) The building is the exactly the same as it was in the 80s and it's well kept, so for me it's like stepping back in time when I took music lessons here. Pretty fantastic to have something so well preserved for the next generation. I told Larry what I was looking for. He did a great job showing me my options and while he showed the the nicest version of what I was looking for, he in no way pressured me to spend extra. He got me just what I wanted and even made me a nice bundle offer that I am confident got me the best deal around. He even threw in extra after the sale. We did business and then he helped carry my purchase to the car. So while we tend to forget the Small Business so often in lieu of box stores and online shipping, there's something about the time and care and appreciation I felt today at Luca Music. I would not hesitate to return or recommend.
