Great Company... don't hesitate to buy from these guys. I picked up the Scott Scale 925 since they had the best price around ($1799) plus free shipping for bikes over $1500. What I liked... 1) Great job answering my questions on the phone since I wasn't sure if the XL was the right size for me and I had other questions since it is a pretty big purchase. I shopped around a lot before pulling the trigger. 2) I was fully expecting to have to put it together from scratch but they pre assemble and tested it before they ship it in a larger box where they do a great job protecting it during shipping. The day I received it I got to ride it since it took less than an hour to put the minor pieces on. Remember you need to provide your own peddles for the nicer bikes like this. 3) Nick kept me informed via email and I asked him to make it tubeless. Which he did at no cost (so I didn't even need to put on the tires). I had the bike in about 7 days after placing the order. I've been riding this bike for over 2 months now pretty much every day. I get a Pro discount on Tifosi sunglasses through USAC but recently ordered two pair at full retail price from Contender, because the style I wanted has been discontinued. One pair was supposed to come with multiple alternate lenses, but they were missing when I received the sunglasses. I called the store, explained the issue, and gave them my name to locate the order. The person I spoke with said they said they would send out the missing lenses (but quickly hung up the call without confirming my address, which didn't leave me feeling hopeful). Sure enough, more than a month later, I have received nothing--no lenses and no update. If they by chance found the lenses were missing, at a minimum, they should've provided a partial refund. I could've literally bought two pair with my Pro discount for the price I paid for one at Contender. Next time I'll buy a new style via the Pro shop instead of trying to pick up a discontinued model elsewhere online--and I definitely won't be purchasing items from this shop again. read more

No matter where you live, this is the high-end bike shop for you. I live on the East Coast and I've bought two bike frames from them; a BMC Roadmachine, and just recently a Time AdH(GORGEOUS). The owner is knowledgeable and more than fair. Ryan sold me the new frame and cockpit (Deda, also gorgeous). He checked the tire clearance with my tires and wheels, and best of all, he dialed in my fit, from looking at my current bike, and looked at older custom bike fit specs. It's the best fit, most fun road bike I've ever had, and I've had some good ones! Recently brought my road bike in to get a tube replacement. It was quick and easy. Through the bike on my rack and drove to my triathlon a couple hours away. When I got to the race the tire was flat. Would not recommend a bike shop that will not fix the cause of the flat in the first place. Tried working with them before posting this, but unfortunately the only thing they could offer is a $4 tube. Go somewhere else if you are being charged $21 for a 5 minute repair. read more

I bought an e-mtb from here and it was a great experience. They had a great video between the Scott lumen and Orbea rise I was looking at. I went with the rise. They put the bike together, test road it and then removed the handlebars and front tire for shipping. It was very well protected with padding so it arrived in great shape. I stopped in the other day for a top tube bag for my Cervelo. They had a few on the shelf but I wanted the Cervelo branded one. These guys basically tore the store apart to find the bag for me. They didn't have one but this level of service is excellent. While waiting, literally every employee asked if I needed help. I primarily live in Phoenix and the one high end bike shop in the area is miserable to deal with. I'll continue to support this shop even if it means waiting a month or two to stop in when I'm here again. read more

So I went to 4 local shops including REI. I rode 9 E bikes and asked dozens of questions. I read way too many reviews which seemed biased and mostly sponsored. I met Mischa at Contender and he helped me find the bike I asked for but didn't want to pay for. $$ I test drove a Giant & Gazellle and went dutch. I loved the options, ride and color. There were plenty of bikes to look at, well staffed and the location is perfect for test rides. Flats, hills and a park let you put a bike through its paces. After I bought the bike I had one issue about delivery and the owner called me in a few hours and resolved it. Cannot ask for more. 5 STARS read more

WASTE OF MONEY. I'm not sure what I just paid for. I brought my bike in for an "annual tune" and I am beyond disappointed. They not only put my bar tape on winding in the wrong direction but did an amateur job at best. The "wash and shine bike" means they will wipe off your chain and rear chain rings and leave everything else the way it came in. I was so happy to get my bike back as I thought the shop was cool and the older guy who has helped me out many times was always nice and helpful. I'm honestly not sure if they did anything on the long list of things that they said they were going to do. Lost all trust and I am now my own bike mechanic. read more

Brought my bike in for the Pro Tune and the work was fantastic. I also loved that they didn't try to upsell anything and actually told me not to get a brake bleed because my brakes wouldn't have benefitted much so saved me $20. After the tune, my back brake felt much softer during my first ride out and although they hadn't done anything to the brakes during the first tune, they not only took the bike back and fixed the brake, but even resurfaced both rotors for me free of charge. In addition to all of this, everybody was super friendly and knowledgeable, turnaround time was faster than they quoted initially, and prices are very reasonable compared to other shops in SLC. Will be returning for all of my repair needs in the future without a doubt! read more

I purchased a new Electric Orbea Mountain Bike this spring for $6,000. The front brake was squeaking badly when I left the store with the new bike. Contender Bicycle assured me the squeaking would go away after a bit of use. This was not the case. They have tried to repair the problem 3-4 times. It is still not fixed. I requested a refund for the bike on July 29 based on the fact I was sold an expensive bike with a bad brake. I even offered to purchase a different bike if they could provide the refund. I feel they should be dealing with the manufacturer rather than continuing to make it my problem. Contender Bicycle has offered me nothing for my troubles. This is despite the fact I purchased 3 new bikes from them this year. The bike is currently in their shop for another attempt at repair. I do not recommend this company. read more

Best service I've seen at a bike shop by a long shot. All the staff are friendly and ultra attentive. While checking out some tubes at the register, the cashier made me aware that there was a cheaper option. He went and grabbed the other tubes for me and ended up saving me money. Earlier this year one of their sales persons pushed my wife into a set of very expensive race tires that she obviously didn't need, at $96 each. She came in for a very specific training tire, but the sales person took advantage of her. After a little less than 300 miles, the rear failed to hold it's shape in the bead, therefore a major fail. I brought the tire in to see if they could seat the bead and get it inflated and they couldn't. They admitted that the tire had failed. The interaction went like so: "...I've never seen one of these tires do this... so unfortunately we can't do anything other than free labor on installing another one [plus the full cost of the new tire]." Note: this isn't a review of the tire. It's a comment on manipulative sales tactics and a failure to back up the products they sell. read more

If you are ordering online, it looks like the have an enormous inventory in stock. Fancy Icelandic Carbon handlebars? Sure, they've got those. Will charge your credit card for however many hundreds of dollars you spend on items that show as in stock through the entire transaction and on your receipt afterwards, and that in just days it should be dispatched and arrive at your door step. Then you wait through 5 or 6 days of radio silence. This is when they must be hunting around with suppliers to see if they can actually buy and stock the thing you already paid for because they told you it was in stock and was going to ship right away. And then an email comes with no explanation at all saying your transaction is cancelled and that your credit card will be refunded. In the short time of "up to ten days." This place fakes in stock inventory so they can get your money and then if they can happen to find your product they eventually get and ship it. If not, then no loss to them - they just tied up your money (why should they care? not their money ...) for more than 2 weeks (and screwed up your plans) because of the off chance that they might find what they don't actually have, deliver it far later than promised and keep your $$$. Normally I've had very good luck with SLC area businesses conducting business ethically, but I suppose you get grifty scum tactics everywhere nowadays. read more

Contender will try to steer you away from simpler, cheap repairs and convince you to make huge and expensive replacements. Basically, their attitude seems to be that they don't have the time to mess around with easy fixes. I'd been taking my wife's bike here until they gave up their hand by riding her (pun intended) way too hard about something small and stupid that was fixed for 1/10th the cost elsewhere. For the hardcore, wealthy biker with elaborate needs this may be the place to go, but for the casual biker or easy commute cyclist I'd steer clear. read more

I brought four bikes here to be serviced. I wanted to get a tuneup on three of the four bikes and then a cable on another one of my bikes needed to be fixed. My road bike was taken in for a tune-up and when I started loading my bike on the rack on my vehicle my son said that the tires were flat and probably needed to be pumped up. So I took it back in while we were here and they finished the job. Not so good quality control. However the worst is yet to come. They told me it would take about a week to finish them and I said that's fine no problem we're here for 2 weeks on vacation. The following week I called to see if the bikes were ready and this service / sales person told me that 3 of the four bikes were done but one of the bikes, which was my wife's e-bike that was taken in for just a tune-up, needed additional work on the brake pad because he said that it was worn down. Reluctantly I told him to go ahead and change it and he told me that it would take another day or two because they had to order the part in. Well another week went by and I called in to pick up the bikes and they said that the parts still hadn't arrived. so we went without our bikes for the entire vacation and now on the day that we're leaving I went to pick up the bike and they said that it finally came in and they went to install it and when they did they said that they couldn't install it because it wouldn't fit on that bike. So I just told them to put the old pad and brake back on the the rear will since it was working relatively fine when I brought it in and when I picked it up they told me that they couldn't reconnect it the way that it was and I now have a bike with a back brake that has no functionality whatsoever. This is what you get when you take your bike to contender bicycles for a tune-up. Look at the video. read more

Let me start off by saying that this is not a review written in the heat of anger.  I have bought 4 bikes from this store (Scott Genius 920, Scott Spark, and 2 kids Cannondale bikes).  Love the building, and live really close to it. Customer service is hit or miss, but if you have issues with any of your bikes or service, they are snarky and unhelpful.  They overcharged me fore several services, including a $300 repair that they broke on my bike (this is actual. Mechanic snapped something while messing with my suspension lock out).  Also got charged for my "free tune up" which they sent me a flyer for when I got my new bike, and upon picking it up was hit with the bill.  I don't need to get into every single issue Ive had here, but I have given this shop ample opportunity to earn my business and every single time im disappointed by their ethics and customer service.  I will not be returning sadly. read more

I've been going to Contender, mostly for smaller items for years, even though I've never purchased a bicycle through them. Over the years, they have routinely been the only shop to have the one rare, strange item that I've needed. But today... Today they earned a Yelp review. Last night I was descending one of the new trails up at High Star Ranch in Kamas when I freakishly hit a rock with my rear deraileur and broke my lower jockey wheel in half. I've been riding for years and never seen such a thing and figured a replacement would be no big deal. Apparenlty I was wrong. The lower jockey wheel on the new Eagle drivetrain is an unusual Narrow/Wide 14 tooth affair (while most other Jockey wheels are 11 teeth). Not only are replacements exceedingly expensive, nobody had them. Not even that big, giant online retailer out west. I started calling every shop, visiting several others before I finally gave Contender a ring. Sure enough, they didn't have the jockey wheel on hand, but they'd pull the parts I needed off another rear-mech then just put the ordered parts back into their inventory when they came it - thereby totally saving my autumn riding weekend. This isn't the first time Contender has bailed me out at the last minute. Kudo's Contender, and to Tyler who did all the leg work. A previously reputable shop took a drastic turn for the worse when they knowingly sold my wife a high-priced ill fitting Pinarello, and when bringing up the topic to them the interaction flow is going fine until the 'oh, you didn't get the message? We can't buy it back.'. Funny (not) how messaging works perfect up until the point of delivering the bad news. Well, it works both ways. Never again will a spend another cent at Contender, and anyone else should beware of that possibility too of selling you something just to sell something vs selling the thing that fits. read more

Lots of people dump on Contender because they don't cater to the entry-level market. There's plenty of other shops in SLC that will happily sell you a $400 Specialized Hardrock to make a sale and get you out the door - this definitely isn't the place for that. High end road or XC MTB? Contender is the spot in SLC, hands down. Hell, I haven't been into a nicer/more well stocked road shop this side of Austin, even throughout the Bay Area. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Owners Ryan and Allison obviously have significant experience riding and racing, and have put it into practice in the shop. Service manager Shawn is top-notch and will help you out with anything, from going to bat with sales reps and vendors for obvious warranty issues for you, to sourcing bizarre proprietary parts (Campy, anyone?) you didn't think you could find. Their fitting system (provided by Orbea, IIRC) is one of the best you could ask for, short of a lab. You will pay for this level of service and knowledge, but if you're a seasoned cyclist, you know it's worth it. If you're willing to pay full retail on a mid-to-high end road or XC MTB, don't bother going anywhere else in SLC. read more

I just a major tune-up here on my very heavily ridden road bike and it is riding so amazingly well--better than it has in years. I have noticed in particular coming down the canyons that I have a more smooth ride and feel safer at higher speeds. This is an excellent shop with knowledgeable and friendly staff and fantastic service. I also recently bought my first mountain bike here in ages and they were so patient with my many questions. They will always try to help you with minor mechanical issues on the spot if they can; or you can schedule time for lengthier repairs. Highly recommended! read more

How many of us can say, "High End Shop" before you scream? I have been screaming for weeks. How is it that a shop gets such a dumb, yes dumb title. That's like saying the Mercedes is a High End Car. Dude you can get a C-class and it won't be so High End. Now, I'm starting to like saying it, High End. Hey baby, you got a nice High End there. How's your High End Hanging? Ok I'm starting to sound like a bad Steve Carrell movie, now. Seriously, though, so they don't sell many $400 bikes. They decided to focus on one sector of the market for their bikes. Why? because maybe they like selling nice things? I think its because all those heavy steel bikes would crash right through the ancient wood floor of the shop; they had to only stock 15 pound or lighter carbon fiber bikes. Thank G_d. Cause I'm sick of walking into every other shop in town wondering where all the eye candy is. And for once I'm not talking about the sales staff. This place is the closest thing to a bike candy store in Utah. You can go and fondle the Assos (great name for lycra pants) bike shorts in the back of the store ($199+). I have a pair cause well, my man was nice enough to buy them for me--they are the best bike shorts I own (100 miles plus with no rash). Or touch the Pinarello Dogma $8,000 and wonder if your kids really need those damned braces. But alas, they sell normal things too like all bike shops do. They have tires and tubes and lights and helmets that are priced just like the Low End Stores. My partner did remind me to say that, well, not all the salespeople can be friendly to all the colors of the rainbow. Some of them won't really chat you up unless they catch the glint of Audemars Piguet (if you don't know what that is, you don't belong here anyway) on your wrist, but we found one and we're keeping him. Too bad such a great shop with cool bikes has to be so lame when it comes to treating everyone like they are equal like the constitution says. After keeping these guys late while our friend bought himself a bike and all the fixin's these guys impressed me. So much. They got another star tonight. Ask for Blake, or Julian, or Steve and you'll be taken care of like a star even if you're buying last year's sale model. read more

This store is superb. I broke my frame near the chainstay a few weeks before a big event. The store employees were all very helpful. Nick help pick out an excellent frame to replace the old one. They had the parts from the old frame on the new one in a very short time. Fitting the new frame was a challenge, but all of the employees were very helpful and cooperative. The bike was ready to go for my event. I am very pleased with the new frame and the store. Excellent service and very helpful and friendly employees. The owner has done an excellent job. My vote for the best bicycle shop in SLC. Bravo! read more
