My pretty lamp was giving off sparks, and it even burnt a hole in the base of a light bulb! I was feeling sad, because I thought my lamp was beyond repair, but I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained, so I brought it to Continental Hardware. They re-wired it and they replaced the socket where the light bulb gets inserted, and now it is as good as new! The whole process took less than a week, and they only charged me $17 and change. Of course, before I brought my lamp home, I asked the nice gentleman who was working behind the counter to try it out for me, and he cheerfully obliged. When I praised the excellent work, he thanked me, and he informed me that they have been doing this for years. I am so happy and I highly recommend Continental Hardware to anyone who needs to have a lamp re-wired and/or a lamp's light bulb socket replaced. read more

The owner amazed me by finding metal pieces, cutting them down to size to match the one I still had, and then taking the time to notch them to match. All at an incredible price. What drives my decision to rate this store as a five star experience. Good question where no simple answer can suffice. Three quick bullets to illustrate the finer points and additional details to follow. ~Service: whatever the item I am in need of, if they do not stock it, their other store might or they will try to tell you where you can go to procure it. -Although smaller than the super mega sized Lowe's and Home Depot, the selections still run deep to the back of the store and stocked high within each aisle. Continental Hardware has on more than one occasion had items that Home Depot did not. Today was a prime example as I needed a 26" florescent light, which they had in stock and HD did not carry. ~Price: there is really no noticeable price variation between the two. For the purposes of this review I will continue to use Home Depot as my comparative subject. -For many of the older homes in Forest Hills, Continental Hardware really fits a special niche. ~Parking is on the street, but you will never be looking for more than a moment, as there is ample street parking to be had on and off Metropolitan Avenue. read more

The old owner was great. He was helpful, answered questions, made suggestions, even unscrewed parts for me that my hands could not. I was there 2x a month. He was well stocked for the neighborhood and always had something I needed. He even did free repairs to the triangle framed folded US flags that are given to the families of veterans. I want to support my neighborhood small business. BUT.... the new owners don't ask, don't help even when asked, won't go through the shelf with me to see if they have it. The answer from the cash register is, "if it not there ,we don't have it and I don't know. " Last time I was there one of the guys got really gruff and yelled at me because I was taking too long at a shelf, that no one was helping me with.. I wanted to walk out but I really needed to buy the item I chose. Right now I need a package of wood screws to finish a project. I don't want to go back to them. I question if culturally they don't want a woman in their store. I have to find a new hardware store. Don't really want to go to HD, but I may have to. read more

I always try to support our small, neighborhood businesses. Originally, I gave them a 5 star rating. But after dramatic changes,I stopped being a customer. Nowadays, they are usually out of important items. Even worse, the new staff is cold and nasty. read more

I have to thank the owner. He took the time to help me on two separate occasions, to find the correct small parts to hook up something to my faucet. The first time was easier. The second time, i showed up just as he was closing on a Friday. I had been to Home Depot the day before, and a plumbing supply store as they recommended; neither had the needed parts. Rather than give up when he didn't have either, what looked like what was needed, he took the time to understand the problem and then figure out how to attach two different parts together, to complete the hookup. This sale was around $10 and again, i really appreciate his attention to figure this out. These guys don't listen. I was looking for cement to seal cracks around the heating pipe in my bathroom but the one guy there kept either talking about sheet rock or recommending something flammable. These guys are just not fit to run a business. Unfriendly, indifferent and don't bother responding to your questions or what you need. They watch your every step as soon as you walk into the store as if they expect you to be a shop lifter. Very disrespectful ! read more

Looks like they switched owners since the 3 years ago I've last been there. The older guy behind the counter didn't seem receptive when i first walked in. He sees me but was finishing up his conversation with another older customer while bragging about how everyone knows, "Continental Hardware"... So I'm waiting up for their conversation to finish. In walks this other guy, glances over and sees me waiting on line yet, he continues to immediately greet the guy in the front and immediately asks for an item. Both of them completely dismissing me. I decide not to cause a scene and observe both of them. Until this other worker from the back came to the front and also look passed me, to the other customers after me, until then I asked him for help, did he then assist me. When I'm at the front about to pay, the initial guy at the counter still continues to not acknowledge me and just looked away, talking to the guy who actually helped me. At the end the guy who helped sell me my kitchen sink pipe rang me up and I left. I was the only Asian customer there. Seems like I no longer got that good customer service that I once had 3 years ago. Being ignored, dismissed and "invisible" as a customer... Never again... Kind of obvious this place will now cater to a specific type of community. read more

The people where extremely friendly and willing to help you with anything. The store is pretty small but has a lot of hardware in it. I Gave then 3 stars because the wall paper stickers that I bought from there was no good. A total waste of money. I live pretty far so it wasn't worth it to go back to return. Very unfriendly staff. Went in several times for some plumbing stuff and they were very rude and unhelpful. Something was wrong with my kitchen faucet so we disassembled it, brought the piece that we thought was the source of the leak. We asked the guys here for some parts, they didn't have some of the replacement parts we were looking for and the things they did have were way overpriced. The experience dealing with the two mean geezers were very unpleasant. I will not return to this hardware store again. I ended up finding plumbing store in Jamaica. That hole in the wall shop was much more helpful than these two guys at Continental Hardware. read more

Just had a couple of multi-lock keys made here. I went to the hardware store on yellowstone but they don't do these, so they can't be made at every hardware store. Knowledgable, courteous, and a fair price. Will definitely be going back here for any hardware needs. read more

Once again, after failing to find hardware in the mega Home Depot down the street, I went to Continental Hardware and got just what I needed at a reasonable price. Next time I'll go here first.
