Our room was a handicap room (we knew this when we booked) due to a full hotel and this was the only non-smoking room with double beds left available. We thought our room had a slight odor, but it wasn't bad enough for us not to be able to stay there, besides we knew there weren't any more rooms available. That was the Only thing that kept us from leaving a 5 star rating...we would give a 4.5 if it were possible. The indoor pool area was small but clean and well kept. And of course my children loved it. The bathrooms near the pool were exceptionally clean. A continental breakfast was provided and offered a good variety. We were pleasantly surprised with the breakfast and selection. There were the traditional pastries, cereal, yogurt, waffles, and breads along with sausage, gravy, biscuits, folded eggs, and egg and cheese omelets. Everything was tasteful and the staff servicing the breakfast was friendly, positive, and outgoing. There was a 24 hour coffee bar (regular and decaf) available in the main lobby. It was well stocked with multiple types and flavors of creamer, and various sugars and sweeteners. The coffee was very good and the bar well used by my family. There was also juice available all day and night. Our room included the following amenities: ironing board, iron, hair dryer, refrigerator, flat panel TV, free reliable WiFi (a speed test showed our room giving 1.6 Mbps), telephone, small table w/2 chairs, the tub included a handicap seat that could be folded up when not needed, also there was an adjustable shower head that could be raised and lowered and removed to be handheld if necessary. The air conditioner in our room worked great and kept the room very comfortable. The beds and pillows smelled fresh and were very comfortable...my whole family slept well. Overall the noise level of the whole hotel was pretty quiet. There was a short period of time in the morning when it was noisier, we assume because we were fairly close to the breakfast area and front lobby. There were several restaurants close by and some within walking distance of the hotel. They advertise a pool but the pool had the cover on still and didn't look like it's been cleaned at all for the upcoming season. All in all, it wasn't very clean or inviting. It turned out to be a large room which was nice, except that the AC unit (which worked well) was on one side of the room, and the bathroom is on the other, so it did not cool the bathroom very well. The room had a good cold frig and decent microwave oven. In fact, the frig would easily freeze everything if we wanted which was great because that allowed us to actually set it where we wanted. (At the hotel I stayed at before Comfort Inn, you could turn the frig as high as it would go and your food would only be cool.) The bed was extremely comfortable - one of the best I have seen in a hotel. This is a minor point, but we found three crickets in the room during our stay - one in the bed which my wife was unhappy with. Crickets don't normally bother me but their chirping in the room did get annoying. Though the TV reception in the room was good, the TV remote was indecipherable and there was no printed channel listing in the room. When we asked the front desk for help with the remote, they told us that all of their rooms have a variety of different televisions and remotes and they didn't know which one we had, so they couldn't help us. One of the worst aspects of the room was the low water pressure in the shower which made getting ready each day pretty unpleasant. I will never understand why hotels try to save a few pennies on water and end up making their guest's entire stay unpleasant. We only tried the continental breakfast one morning, but it was decent. This Comfort Inn had a number of large semitrailer trucks lining the entrance of the hotel every night, and most of the parking lot was taken up by big work trucks making it feel more like a truck stop than a hotel. Every night driving into the entrance, I felt like a mouse among a herd of elephants. The final issue we encountered which confirmed my low rating of this hotel, is that they NEVER cleaned our room one time in the four days we stayed there. On day three, my wife asked them to clean it... but it was not cleaned. On the fourth day, after we had been gone all day long, I called the Front Desk from my car and asked them to make sure our room had been cleaned before we returned. The person I spoke with started explaining their bizarre cleaning schedule - they only do a light cleaning the first day, they do some other semi housecleaning service every other day, and I think she said a full cleaning only every fifth day - something like that. I emphasized to her again that we had been there 3 days by that morning, and no one had cleaned our room at all yet. She said she didn't think the room had been cleaned since we left either, that the housekeeping staff had already gone for the day and if we wanted to speak with the Manager, we would need to call him... NEXT WEEK! I was dumbfounded. Sure enough, when we got back to the room, we found it had not been cleaned. Fortunately, we had just that last night to get through, and so used what towels we already had and piled the trash up on top of the already full cans. The next morning, just as we were about to checkout, housekeeping knocked on the door and asked if we needed anything. Though the Madisonville Comfort Inn has a few positive areas, the shower water pressure, truck stop feel and non-existent housekeeping will keep me from ever returning.

Instead, my husband went to the counter and explained the situation. We were not offered another room but the attendant stated we would get a refund. They gave him two sets of sheets and we had to completely remake the beds ourselves. The room was dusty and appeared unvacuumed as well. In the morning, housekeeping literally put the bins right in front of our door and we had to move them to get out of our room. Then we went to the hotel breakfast room at 8:55 (the signs on the wall the night before had said open until 9:30am, but when we got there the door was locked, You could see three employees helping themselves to breakfast, and there was a handwritten sign taped over the door that said breakfast ended at 9am. The employees just stared at us expressionless even when we knocked, so we did not get breakfast, When we checked out, they tried to charge us full price, and when we repeated the events of the night before to the supervisor, there was no apology, no friendliness, but she did agree to a price reduction of 50%, which at that point we took to just get out the door and away from there.

The floor looked dirty as it was littered with small pieces of garbage, there was garbage in the bathroom garage can, grimey finger prints on the furniture, and it looked like the sheets were used and just tucked back in all wrinkled. Theres no way this room was properly cleaned. Ok, so I've delt with a dirty room before. It is what it is. But for $172 for one night, Id at least expect to sleep in a clean looking bed. Then I noticed the room started to smell like weed. This is really where I draw a line. I went to the desk and told them my room smells like weed..and also it is dirty. And asked if there was any other rooms available. The front desk lady goes..."So which is it? Does it smell like weed or is it dirty?"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? Its both! But I told her the weed smell is the main problem as I am traveling with a newborn and toddler and they cannot be breathing in toxins. The lobby also vaguely smelled like weed which was unpleasant but I didn't bring that up to her. She called the manager and was able to switch us rooms which is great and all, but when I got back to the dirty room, I found a pill on the ground. My heart sank. What if my toddler picked it up? What if he swallowed a pill and I didnt know? What if there were more? We were busy dealing with a messy and toxic room, unloading the car, and trying to soothe a toddler and a newborn from traveling in the car all day. I could have easily missed him putting something else in his mouth. One of the dirty things on the ground was a small bottle cap. A major choking hazard. My toddler did pick this up but I noticed immediately before he put it in his mouth. This hotel was negligent in providing a safe and clean space. It could have cost more than 172$. Thats a hospital visit and admission in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. Thats my child's life. Do we think Marriott would have paid for this medical emergency? My guess is they would not. I am beyond upset that this happened. The room they sent us to also was a problem. The bath tub didn't close so I couldn't give the kids a bath. The internet was also so slow that it was better to just use my phone as a Hotspot to power my computer. I just hope this is a reminder to others to be vigilant in checking hotel rooms when traveling with small children. This night could have been way worse if I didnt catch Marriott's mistakes. I would also like to mention that this pill and bottle cap was in a relatively visible spot. If someone did vacuum the room, it would have been easily cleaned up. I dont know that I can trust Marriott anymore. I am so disappointed.
