I knew nothing about this place, but Isabel told me it's the chain that North Carolinians are most proud of so I figured we had to try it (Isabel had also never been to one). What an experience that was... Food? Great value, you get lots of quantity for a low price and it all ranges from decent to pretty damn good. Shakes and Tea? A step above the food, although it is hard to drink some of the shakes with the straw they're thick like a homemade malt ice cream. Ambiance? WHY WAS THERE CCM MUSIC PLAYING? WHY DOES IT SAY GOD BLESS AMERICA ON THE CUP WITH A BIBLE VERSE? Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh it's so bad it's kind of hilarious Travis' Rating Taste - 4.5 Quality - 3.5 Ambiance - WTF? Overall - 4 Isabel's Rating Taste - 3 Quality - 2 Ambiance - Aaaaaaahhhhhh Overall - 3

Cookout does a pretty good job of keeping consistency across their restaurants, and this one doesn't fall off the mark. If you don't come to this place and get a $5 tray, you are losing your bang for buck, and the review might as well drop to three stars. Otherwise, as they nickname it "THE BEST COMBO IN [insert town name]", the tray really is an amazing deal. You can get a main item, two sides, and a drink for only $5, upgrade to a shake for $1 extra. Since most people already know this, I'll try to give some tips on what I think your tray should look like. It depends on what you want, but you essentially can't go wrong with the main item. I typically get a big double burger, because it feels like a real large burger, but the 2 quesadillas and the chicken strips are also good options quantity and taste wise. For the sides, always try to get one of them as the fries (add cajun seasoning for free, just ask). They really like to fill up the box with the fries, so having only one side of fries they just fill up the tray with they and you end up getting a lot compared to if you just got fries on their own. Most of the other sides are great, but I would veer away from the slaw/chili and the chicken nuggets, solely based on them not giving enough. For the drink, I highly suggest going for the cheerwine/coke float, which is at no extra cost, instead of the shake for an extra dollar. Speaking more about this specific Cookout, it is indoors, which is really nice if you're going with others and you want to have a common place to sit down. In addition, you won't ever have along wait since they do get through orders pretty quickly, even when there are a lot of people. The biggest gripe I'd have for this place is probably the sanitation. I feel kind of dirty when I'm eating there as most of the chairs and tables are pretty sticky and the bathroom is typically in bad condition. Considering the quality and quantity you get for cheap prices, I try to ignore it anyways. All in all, a very run-of-the-mill Cookout that is legendary in its bang for buck, but is held back by its lack of sanitation.

Came here at about 3-4am. There are so many Cook Out locations! 1. Incredibly long line of aggressive drunk drivers = high potential for car accidents, especially because people will try to cut you in line. umm sorry people, but this is NOT the same as cutting in front of someone at the grocery store - we're all in cars, it's far more dangerous. Please be considerate. 2. You're supposed to be able to add as many milkshake options as you'd like, but the lady taking my order was not having it. She repeated my order, but I assure you, I ordered far more than 4 ingredients! I corrected her, but she refused to repeat my order accurately. I have no idea what ended up being in the milkshake (M&Ms, peanut butter, and I guess chocolate with banana or something along those lines), but it was less than half of what I ordered. What an outrage! 3. On top of that, she started over with a "Welcome to Cook Out....(blah blah blah)" Excuse me, but our group is still here. We haven't moved. And you got half our orders wrong. Rude. Nonetheless, I'm giving at least 3 stars for the food because it still tasted good and was cheap, even though it wasn't quite what I ordered. And any place that stays open so late and tolerates the crazy drunk crowd - props to Cookout!

I was hoping I would not be disappointed. Downtown Durham on Parrish Street I do believe. I went there midday and there was a sparse lunch crowd already seated when I arrived. The warmly lit space presents nice aesthetic as you walk into the restaurant. A very chill and comfortable atmosphere. I love the bar and the mirrored wall nestled behind it. The spot is pretty laidback and very clean, but has a bit of a rustic nuance to it as well. I like that. The serving staff were extremely nice and helpful towards advising me in making my selection -- with me being a first-timer and all. I kept it simple...I chose the Classic Burger (pink) with pepper jack cheese, bacon marmalade, and as a side, I had to go with the Dirty Fries -- 'cause that's how I roll y'all. About the food: I have to say, the burger was staunchly built and crafted with artistry. Nice and tall with a seriously tasty bun encapsulating everything. Perfectly well-seasoned meat and the first bite was simply delightful. I noticed as I got towards the center of the meat, it was bit less juicy than the surrounding parts of the burger, but nevertheless still tasty. My Dirty Fries were delicious In the end; the experience as a whole was quite delightful and I would definitely like to go there again -- perhaps try a different burger to expand upon my experience with this place. Something that I'm legally obligated to keep quiet about... but let tell you- this burger was Gooood. This "Signature Secret Burger" was rather unique, as it was like you took a pretty simple egg burger, and just ramped it up. My initial thought when I first tried it was that it was a burger squared, the mystery ingredients amplified the flavor to make such a savory meal. It wasn't to overbearing like many other burger places that I've visited, not immediately making me feel fat and full after taking a few bites. Our party also ordered a whole quart of fries, and they were SO GOOD!!! I'm a sucker for good fries, and you knocked this out of the park! Your fry soft was nice and mellow and complimented the fries perfectly. (And even afterwards, the fries warmed up really well and were still Really freakin' good!) Finally, during my visit, their anniversary event (Happy 15th By The Way ) and they were offering FREE DESSERT for someone who happened to sit in a randomly chosen seat. And by the luck of the gods my little brother found his way onto the seat! It was just really awesome to see a restaurant doing such awesome things for their birthday, y'don't see that every day! Overall, this place is definitely a place to stop by if you're in Durham. If you're in the area visit IMMEDIATELY if you love good fun food!

For the main, I ordered the standard burger despite several limited-edition options being available (ask about the Hamilton theme!). It was cooked precisely to my specified medium, with a flavorful patty and nice structural integrity throughout. The tater tots were basically as good as they come. We paired the meal with IPAs - Dancing with the Bulls and Bull in a Bottle Shop - both of which held up well against the richness of the food and worked particularly well with the burger. I finished the meal off with the amaretto which provided a balanced finish and was reminiscent of my usual espresso martini without being overly boozy or heavy. Service was friendly and professional as always, and the atmosphere remains a strong point: upscale casual without feeling forced.
