Priorities! I got the 'Sampler: 2 Meats, 2 Sides, Texas Toast' with my choices of 18-Hour Brisket (smoky, tender, yummy) and Pulled Pork (bland without sauce). Thankfully, the vinegar-based Swine Wine sauce from the sauce bar saved the day. The Cornbread was okay and too smooth for me (I like crumbs and crustiness), but the Collard Greens were delicious! Had the Judge's Sampler with 2 more people. Only giving 4 stars since we went for dinner at 7pm and they were out of ribs for the day already. We substituted them for pulled chicken and it was actually a worthy substitution. Food was more than sufficient for 3, and the sides (collard greens, cornbread, and fried okra that we paid a little extra for) were quite good. Everything was tender, well seasoned, and fresh. Their hot bbq sauce was borderline addicting. My only complaint is the collard greens though well seasoned, were salty. Ordered a combo meal with 2 meats and 2 sides. For $20 I was a little taken aback by how small it was? I love bbq and order my fair share but have not seen portions this small from anywhere else. Popped in here because they were dog friendly. Service was great, we both ended up getting the choose 2 meats and 2 sides combo. For sides, we got greens, mac n cheese, green beans and baked beans. All were good, but the greens were my least favorite. The ribs were nice and tender as was the pulled pork. The brisket was decent, but I used to live in Texas and this one is nowhere near as tender and flavorful as those I've had in the past. I was kind of interested in dessert but once I learned the banana pudding had caramel on it, I passed. I liked that they had an array of sauces and I tried them all. I visited the bathrooms while I was there a were clean, but one of the stalls was out of order and there were only 2. Also, they were out of real forks so I attempted to eat with a spoon, but the spoon from the container was dirty. When I asked them for a fork I was given a plastic pack lol. Before I moved to North Carolina, you would never catch me with coleslaw on my plate, but that all changed the first time I tried Lolo's pulled pork sandwich. Something about the mix of the swine wine sauce and the creamy yet crunchy slaw just makes for the absolute perfect combo and now, more than 8 years later, I'm a slaw-on-my-pulled-pork-sandwich convert! Truly, all thanks to this sandwich. And over all these years, it's remained consistently delicious. Service here is usually pretty good! Staff is friendly when you order and pickup at the counter. That's all you'll really interact with them. Pre-COVID times, there were pickles and onions for your sandwiches and lemon wedges for your tea set out in a condiment bar by the self-service sauce and drink stations--that hasn't come back. Now things sit empty and collect random straw wrappers and lids because customers can't be bothered to put their trash in the correct bins and as is the case in most food service locations, they're too understaffed to have people maintaining the dining area. It's off-putting when the receptacles for dirty dishes are overflowing during busy rushes. So I'm taking off a star for ambiance only because things don't feel as clean as they could be. I was traveling for work and figured I would try some NC barbecue while in the area. I ordered the two meats with two sides platter which listed it came with texas toast. I also added an additional side and two desserts and placed my order through Uber Eats. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed in nearly all of the food. The brisket was very dry and the pulled pork was decent but I was only given a very small portion of it. There was also a huge slab of fat and skin included in the container- I was very off put that it was included with my meal when there was no meat in it and was completely indelible. The sides I ordered were the fried okra, corn pudding, and mac & cheese which were bland. The Texas toast was forgotten when they packed the order. The banana pudding was ok but I would recommend that you avoid the peach cobbler unless if you want a bowl of dough. While the cobbler portion was large, it was extremely dry. I've never had peach cobbler without any type of sauce or moisture in it and I only had 3 small peach slices in the container. O. M. G! This is the best serving of fried okra I have ever had! (Sorry, grandmama! I still loved yours, but I think you'd like this better!) Most okra is coated in a thick batter and then cooked until the batter is done. CB puts on a thin batter and cooks it quickly, so that the okra is not all dried out and tough. And the batter is just enough to have a little flavor and crunch. Wow! Just - wow! Sorry, I'm back. I was having a moment. The pulled pork was hot and juicy, and there were several sauces to choose from. I tried to make a joke about pork v. beef and chicken being called barbecue in NC, but it was lost on the young man behind the counter. But they seem to have a lot of other imported barbecue items, in addition to actual NC BBQ (which is always pork!) City Barbeque has a rustic country atmosphere to it. I don't come as regularly as I used to, but when I do, the BBQ doesn't disappoint. The signature pulled pork is delicious. It's rich in vinegar, so be mindful of that. One of my friends had their smoked yard bird (chicken). His portion was generous. The bird was done well. Soft, tender meat with skin on. Their corn pudding was great, I think that will be my go-to side along with hushpuppies. If I go for a meat sandwich, I'll skip the burger bun so I can enjoy the sides. Our experience at this City Barbeque in Durham was average at best. The barbecue ranged from OK to good and service was fine. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it should suffice if you're craving barbecue and the location is convenient to you. It's not bad, but better barbecue can certainly be had around the state. City Barbeque is a chain that originated in Ohio. At the time of writing this review, there are over 50 locations spread throughout six states in the Midwest and South. This location in Durham can be found in the SouthPoint Crossing shopping center just off I-40 exit 276 (Fayetteville Road, Southpoint). It opened in a freestanding building in May 2016. The restaurant looks nice. The construction still looks new and "updated," but the environment is made to evoke a more rustic, country, barbecue-joint feel. Lots of wood in the interior, painted wooden signs, barn doors, corrugated tin, and picnic tables give it that atmosphere. There's even a photo stand-in outside. The kitchen is open, which is cool. You can watch the pitmaster at work. The smokers are outside along with stacks of the Carolina wood they use. Inside, there are TVs playing sports with various sports memorabilia such as jerseys, flags, and trophies used for decor. When we visited, the restaurant had their curbside pick-up system implemented with numbered parking spots assigned. However, at the time of our visit, they were also allowing up to 40 customers to dine inside and 40 customers to dine outside. We sat on the fairly spacious covered patio which had a mixture of umbrella-covered picnic tables plus metal tables and chairs. The patio was lit, had ceiling fans, music, and cornhole. Whether you're ordering in or to-go, your name is called and you pick up at the counter. Drinks (fountain machine, tea and water dispensers) are self-serve, even during COVID times, but barbecue sauces and other condiments are not - you have to ask for them. During our visit, the sauces were individually packaged in small clear cups with snap-shut lids and we had to specifically request them. City Barbeque doesn't serve a particular regional style of barbeque. I suppose you can call it "regionless" or more of a "generic" style. It's actually not too different from the barbecue I'm used to in Georgia. It's definitely not North Carolina style. Like other barbecue restaurants, you can order City Barbeque's Q in various forms such as sandwiches, plates, and by the pound. Expect to spend less than $10 for a sandwich, about $23 for a full slab of ribs, about $10 or less for half a chicken or less, less than $3 for a side, and $15 and up for each plate or platter. By-the-pound barbecue will set you back roughly $14-19 per pound depending on the meat. They also have classic desserts like peach cobbler ($4.99) and banana pudding ($2.99). My wife and I got the Judge's Sampler ($31.99) and an extra side so we could try a little bit of everything. The Judge's Sampler is designed to feed 2-3 people and I would say that designation is spot-on. If you order the Judge's Sampler, I recommend upgrading your sides from regular-size sides to pints for $5 extra. It's worth it because I think the regular-size sides are too small. The Judge's Sampler comes with beef brisket, pulled pork, 1/4 chicken (you get the choice of breast or leg and thigh; I chose the latter), a half slab of ribs, two sides (I chose vinegar slaw and collard greens with pork), two pieces of cornbread, and Texas toast. They forgot our Texas toast and I didn't realize it until after we got home. That was disappointing. For our extra side, I got their 3-cheese baked mac, formerly known as their "Jacked Mac." I was told by the cashier that their 3-cheese baked mac and their green beans with bacon are their two most popular sides. Generally, we found the barbecue to be a bit too bland, overcooked, and/or dry. That was particularly the case with the pulled pork and, most notably, the brisket. I know pork can often run on the drier side at other barbecue restaurants, but the brisket was almost inexcusably tough and dry. Maybe we got unlucky and our cuts were just too lean and well-done. The ribs were par for the course: good, but not outstanding. The smoked chicken was unexpectedly tender and tasty. Of the meats I tried, that was probably the winner for me. Overall, I thought the portion sizes were fair though the amount of pork seemed a little small and we could've done with another slice of brisket (the sampler came with three). The cornbread and sides were yummy, the latter especially so. I recommend both the 3-cheese baked mac and the collards with pork. They're solid. My wife liked the cornbread more than me. The pieces were big. I thought the cornbread could have been more moist and flavorful. As for the sauces, we were given their sweet sauce and spicy sauce, but they have more. The sweet sauce was tangy and tasted very generic while the spicy sauce had barely any kick at all. read more
